They are willing to improve and do good work there

Upon arrival the steps at front are not a welcome sight for a wheel chair person, however workers helped me walk up, and after I found a wheel chair ramp and talked to manager I saw that they used it for the next buses. There was a little difficulty with bathroom access in room with a 1 foot barrier step, which I am able to crawl over. Tour to the city was great, there are many wheelchair obstacles on the streets, and buildings, but with a little work I was more than welcome. The work [... read more]ers at the hotel were gracious and helpful in my stay, and the only complaint was the storm that hit, which is out of their control, and I saw the hotel workers clean and try keep up with people's needs.

Valuable Deal

I booked a oceanview room. The first night when I arrived they gave me a garden view but they changed it the next day. The hotel is pretty old but the room seems clean. There are different night activities happening every day. The water ballet was really nice. Food was horrible as it is Cuba. Overall, it was ok and if the price is right I would still go again.

Still Tropicoco to Most

Two weeks (March 21/18 to April 4/18) of wonderful sunshine at a hotel we have been to before. It has been 2 years and we see many changes/improvements. There have been repairs to walls, lots of paint and many new plants. One bar was closed as work was "slowly" being done. (Cuban speed) Every sign still said "Tropicoco". Locals and tourists are guilty of dropping their stuff where it has been used/emptied. Recycling and refunding programs would greatly benefit the beach area. So many bottles and cans plus wrappers, tissue etc......terrible eyesore, and potentially dangerous. Our bed {a king size in room 334) was comfortable. It was a spacious room (overlooking the back of the hotel where delivery trucks came) and we had an abundance of hot water (except for Good Friday when no water delivery was made and we had no water for about 12 hours) Meals were typical....cheese and meat slices served only at breakfast, pork, chicken and fish served at lunch and supper. Raw shredded vegetables were available for salads. It did get to be a bit boring. The pork burgers made on the grill snack bar were good. I find the desserts are tasteless...so no appeal to me. Lots of eggs. Lots of cinnamon rice pudding. Watermelon, guava and pineapple were the predominant fruits available. We saw bananas only twice. The pool area has been improved greatly...a much larger area and more attractive. We did not take in much of the evening "entertainment" as after many visits to Cuba, the shows tend to be similar. The only thing Tropicoco lacks that I want in a vacation stay is a balcony. We went knowing we would not be getting one. The cervasa was always cold, no matter where we received it. Don't forget to book your free shuttle to Havana the day before you wish to go. We saw people not able to get on because the bus was full. We went for the sunshine, warm breezes and no meal planning or dishes to be done. 100% satisfaction in that! So...yes, we would go back again. Don't forget to claim what you buy when you return to Canada!

Coneiniently located

The two-star resort met our expectations. It offers basic amenities, which are good enough for those who are not fussy, especially when it comes to food and drinks. It is conveniently located near Havana, and the beach is nice.

Changing...

Improvements over many visits during the past 8 years are the elevators always work (both!) ..the lobby and walkway lighting is much improved..and the electronic door keycards allow each person independent access. Sadly the dining room servers are fewer in number and MOST seem to think the "tip" should precede any semblence of service..I see it reversed. You can get cutlery but no napkin..and seemingly be expected to eat your soup with no spoon. I still love the building architecture , variety of travelers, and location.

Well worth a visit !

Hotel Tropicoco, which is in process of changing its name back to Marazur (blue sea), has much to offer. It is a huge building from the time when Soviet Union was much involved in Cuban life. Its main floor is extraordinary....a magnificent design. There is an outdoor pool and 2 bars, one open 24/7. The bars are quite ordinary, but adequate. Waiters are assigned to sections of the room and look after the guests, giving out napkins and pouring wine and others drinks. The room I had was basic...2 beds and a TV that actually worked with BBC and EuroNews among other channels. The room and bathroom were clean. I left one Cuban CUC for the room cleaner and one for the waiter each morning, also brought things to give away. One disappointment was evening entertainment at 9 pm....extremely loud music and all talk in Spanish....no dancing. Service at reception was surprisingly unfriendly most of time. The hotel could do much to improve without spending alot, starting with a more welcoming staff.

Under New Managment.

Improvements are underway and it's a welcome sight ...slowly but surely they are giving the resort a more modern feel. The employees are most accommodating to try and make the stay as pleasurable as they can. If only the weather had been more accommodating but it was what it was. Moderately high winds keep the waves too high for any chance of a relaxing swim and sporadic showers kept everyone on their guard but it was that time of the year so holidayers do your homework before you book. The food was typically Cuban cuisine presented to provide some variety so one could pick and choose as your taste buds dictate. All in all if you're open minded enough to choose Cuba and are capable of 'going with the flow'.... after the lengthy 1 1/2 hr plus shuttle from Varadaro you should do alright. A Free 30 minute shuttle daily into Havana and return is a plus as is the All Inclusive pricing if you can take advantage of a short notice vacation..

Basic with great staff

This is a two star all inclusive so it's not for everyone. My son and I have been staying here for 8 years. The staff are great, beach nice, food basic. Close to Havana for exploring that amazing city.

Tropicoco

Good resort had a good visit Food was not to good, but plenty of it. Too much chicken and pork Staff very friendly and helpful Beach nice and close. Weather was good throughout 115 open bar was always open for coffee and beer Too many cats and dogs barking at night~~!!

Friendly

Staff and waiters friendly . Some are extra nice . Food is okay and good enough for me but not a 4 or 5 star quality. Good place if alone because lots of travelers are single and easy to make friends,Easy bus to Havana where the city is alive and friendly and the old cars are wonderful to watch.

It's Fine-You Get What You Pay For

If you keep in mind what you paid for your stay at Tropicoco, it is great. I travel as a single male with low expectations. I need a clean set of sheets and towels and I am happy. And the Trop delivered this-and more. The meals were decent: standard bulk food of rice, pasta, potatoes etc. The staff were friendly and courteous, especially if you were to them. There were sometimes difficulties with power outages, elevators not working, limited availabilty of certain beverages etc. This is Cuba. [... read more]..it's kind of to be expected. All of this said...the location in great, as there is a good beach right across the street. And the free daily shuttle into Havana is very convenient. As is the proximity of the city itself. Bottom line: if you just want a decent place to hang your hat while you enjoy adventures in Cuba, Tropicoco is for you. If you are a couple on a romantic get away, or have high standards of hotel stays, are a picky eater etc. it may not be. I personally enjoyed it and would/will return.

Pretty good for a 2 star resort.

This hotel was nice and open and close to the beach. Only one hotel key per room is a little inconvenient. There were some plumbing issues (out of water in the toilet in the a.m.), then last day moved to another room because of some leaking water. All in all staff very friendly and helpful. Daily shuttle into Havana is a plus. The beds in our room were very comfortable but on the last day in the other room not as good. Met my expectations in general.

Not the Ritz Carlton, but everything was great!

For the price, you cannot beat this place. Nothing was lacking, I had a great time, beach was great, pool was clean, room basic, but very clean. I even paid 50% more in St-Lucia and got to sleep in a hell-hole. Bravo to the staff at the Tropicoco for everything.

Good security, nothing else special.

No body speaks any English, makes it very difficult to get any info. Not a clean place at all. When comes to food there are not to many choices, but you wont starve. Can't be demanding when you go to 2 star resort. I have to say that the people that work there are very nice in general.

Pretty awesome

my first time in cuba thanks to tripcentral. the room was pretty clean and certainly acceptable. food was decent enough all though they need to label some of the dishes a little better as some days they did and others not. also, being a vegetarian had to be comprised a bit as for some reason those very good bean and rice dishes had little pieces of meat. the shuttle from the airport was delayed in leaving which was not good and was even worse heading back to the airport. we were told 330 am pic [... read more]kup and it arrived 415. all in all I was quite happy and would go back.

Worst resort EVER!!

I have been to over 10 all inclusive resorts. This one by far is the worst of them all. Actually it's not even an all inclusive in my books. Many days, they ran out of breakfast, lunch and/or dinner items. The beer was soo watered down and they had no selection of cocktails. For 5 days I asked for a Mojito and was told that there is no mint. BTW there is only 1 bar and 1 restaurant at the resort. There are cats walking around everywhere including inside the dinning area. Please avoid at all cos [... read more]ts. I made the mistake of going there but would not even let my enemy stay there.

Good Value

All amenities were in working order, clean and roomy. Convenient access to the beach and private. Transportation to and from Havana was good. Communication was sketchy with the front desk. Did not expect 5 star food, but there were days that it was very poor. The most needy was a toaster that made TOAST. Overall I think it was good value for what I paid.

2nd time there--for a 2 star resort-- great value

2nd time there--minor issues which were sorted out on both occasions--will return again either this year or early next year-I have seen all the negative reports about this place which I have never had to deal with--for an all inclusive the breakfast --very good--lunch and dinner--great(even had turkey on my Birthday)

Gorgeous location resort

This hotel needs upgrade and it gona be perfect for example new mattresses new shower accessories new air conditions and new doors locks .faux ceilling and repainting the hall building.in general i liked the hotel because of the location

Underwhelming

Food quality and selection poor most days. If you don't tip for poor service expect to be ignored. Hotel was dark and dingy. Shuttle to the city limited, not as advertised. Language class was cancelled. Hotel staff indifferent to visitors too often. Not much going on in the area. Entertainment and DJ were good.
