Starfish Cayo Largo: An enjoyable stay

The property at the Sol Pelicano resort in Cayo Largo, Cuba is dated, but it is well-maintained. The grounds have a desert-like terrain feel to them with some very beautiful vegetation, such as flowering bushes. The rooms are clean and in good order. The windows and doors to the balconies and terraces have locks and they come equipped with air conditioners. Unfortunately, because the air is so humid in Cuba, the bath towels don’t dry too easily despite the A/C, but if you request a change in t [... read more]owels you will be provided new ones. There is cable TV in the rooms, but the choice is limited for English-speaking travellers, as most channels are in Spanish. The public areas, such as the bathrooms are clean and well-stocked for the most part. On one occasion, the women’s washroom near the salt water pool (bonus!) and the snack bar had run out of toilet paper and the towel bar had run out of clean beach towels. The resort property was devoid of litter; however, the beach was slightly polluted primarily with cigarette butts. This was due to disrespectful tourists and bears no reflection on the staff at the Pelicano. The food at both the buffets and the a la carte restaurants were more than adequate, but the fine dining restaurant could step it up a bit. Gordon Ramsay would not have been impressed. Bananas, real orange juice (not the drink they say is orange juice), and a milk alternative for the lactose-intolerant at the buffets would be a nice addition. Introducing authentic Cuban cuisine to the beach resorts would be refreshing. There were line-ups at the egg and pasta stations, and there was a line-up to use the toaster as well. The toaster did not work very well and eventually broke; it needs to be replaced and there should be more than one. Rooms come equipped with security safes, but unfortunately there was a fee to use them despite the trip being “all inclusive”. A new 1.5L of bottled water was provided daily and you didn’t have to ask for it. The staff were friendly, particularly the men if you were a woman. Some staff members did not seem to speak English well or at all; many were fluent in Spanish (obviously) and French, which did pose a bit of a problem if you, as a traveller, have limited Spanish or French skills. The resort was quiet and never felt overrun by tourists. There was a clothing optional beach, which was amusing when you first stumble upon it as you walk along the beach, but it quickly becomes old news unless you’re prone to prudishness. Overall, the Sol Pelicano is a very good resort. I would recommend it to others looking for a quiet, stress-free vacation and I would stay there again.

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Ole playa blanca

The resort is old and needs some repairs, which are underway. Missed water one day, and missed selection in the dining room. Beach was fantastic, and we'll kept up. Rooms are basic but comfortable. In general, great for the price.

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Resort still needs work

This was my 3rd trip to this resort, each time it was the same or worse. They keep saying it is being improved, but they have little or no money to repair the things that needs to be updated. Some of the buildings are being renovated but the air conditioning is the worse. Small island, which the Cuban government seems to not care about much.The airport is very small and over crowded. Villa Marina: Relaxing Resort

We spent a week at Villa Marinera from March 31 - April 7 of 2016. First time at this resort and in Cayo Largo, second trip to Cuba. I booked this trip after reviewing many, MANY locations in Cuba, and I wasn't disappointed. We were looking for a quiet, relaxing place and Villa Marinera delivered. When I booked in January, the fl [... read more]ight was originally non-stop from Toronto, but it changed to having a stop-over in Holguin to drop-off passengers there, and pick up passengers returning to Toronto from Holguin (via Cayo Largo). We had to de-plane in Holguin for about 45 minutes, and it with the landing and take-off it added about two hours to the overall flight, which was a bit disappointing since part of my decision in booking this trip was the short direct flight from Toronto. However, it ended up being ok, especially being able to stretch the legs and get a teasing taste of the hot sun in Holguin. I did feel a little sorry for the passengers getting on in Holguin, as they were finishing their vacation and had to see our eager faces as we landed in Cayo Largo to begin our week in the sun. We had good karma, it seems, since we received cabin 101, which in my opinion is the best location in the resort. It is a single unit (most are split units) with two bedrooms, a living room and a small kitchen area. The master bedroom was spacious with a king-sized bed and a beautiful view of the harbour and the marina. It is also very close to the pool and restaurant. It had an air conditioner in each bedroom, perfect for sleeping. Almost too cold. There is another single unit but it does not have as nice a view (I think it is 122). I feel I would have been a bit disappointed with one of the newer units set back from the water, even though we didn't spend a lot of time in our cabin. The beautiful morning and evening views were perfect. I'm sure, though, that we would still have had a great stay regardless of which unit we received. The resort has a fantastic pool, where we spent a lot of our time in the afternoons. It was very clean and refreshing, surrounded by lots of greenery, also with great views of the marina and the water. It has a much nicer feel to it than pools at larger resorts. Many times we were the only couple there, no problems at all getting lounge chairs. There was no loud music or annoying entertainment staff, just peace and quiet. The resort has one restaurant/bar. Breakfast began at 7:30 am, lunch at 12:30 pm and dinner at 7:30 pm. After lunch was finished you could order hamburgers, hot dogs or sandwiches, freshly made by the kitchen staff. The buffet was good, typically Cuban. Always enough to eat, although truly a bit repetitive as the week progressed. They did serve a stewed beef dish that was surprisingly good, and some very nice fresh fish. There was a very minimum selection of mixed drinks. No slushy machine, so no nice frozen cocktails. A strawberry daiquiri was made with ice cubes, for example. Rum was plentiful, of course, and there was cold Cristal on tap (except for one day when the condenser on the machine froze, then we had bottled Bucanero until that ran out too. But that was just for a few hours). Excellent coffee. Watch out for the zombies, a couple of our resort friends succumbed to one too many of those. If you are interested in a wider selection of drinks or foods, you can always take the free shuttle to the sister resort at Playa Blanca. We went one day, but found the atmosphere was not as cozy and comfortable as Villa Marinera, and came back early. The shuttle leaves at 9:30 am and returns at 3:00 pm, you will have to take a taxi if you want to stay later for an à la carte dinner. 5 Pesos per person if there are just two in the taxi, three or more and it costs 2 Pesos per person. The town is an interesting feature, with the bank very close by, a shop with souvenirs, snacks and alcohol, a tavern on the dock and lots of souvenir stands. We bought some beers for the cabin so we could relax and enjoy a drink on our deck without having to go back to the restaurant for a refill. The turtle rescue is also interesting, we brought turtle food as a donation and got in for free to see the young sea turtles. Not much happening at this time of year, May and September are the busier times with the laying and hatching of the eggs. We did the Super Reef excursion, which consists of two snorkeling sessions, the Iguana Island, the natural swimming pool and lobster lunch. Of the 30-odd people, we were the only English couple; there was one French couple, the rest were Italians. It was an ok excursion, but I would not do it again. Some of our new resort friends did the Sunset Catamaran and really enjoyed it. We rented a quad from Playa Blanca while we were there and traveled to an empty beach at the east end of the island. We also got to see the crocodile at the nursery, and the iguana. The lady at the nursery was very generous with her time, please tip her well if you happen to see her. We rented the quad for 4 hours (27 Pesos), but returned it after only over an hour, since there really was nowhere to go, and riding two-up was not very comfortable for my passenger. The only really negative thing I have to say about the resort is the water. There is of course the salt water beach, and the swimming pool is salt water. The water from the taps in the cottage is also salt water, and had a sulphury smell. You could never really rinse off the salt. It wasn't horrible, merely inconvenient. At the start of the trip, we bought extra bottles of water at the shop, and one was also provided each day, so drinking enough fresh water was never an issue. You can also get your water bottles filled at the restaurant. But when you are used to fresh water from the tap, it's off-puting not being able to rinse off the salt at the end of your day. The shower did have great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Playa Sirena and Playa Parariso are very beautiful. It is very convenient to be able to walk from the resort to the marina to catch the boat to the beach, no extra hassles with catching buses like at the other resorts. As well, walking home after returning from the beach is a treat. If you are heading out to the beach in the morning, ask the kitchen to make a sandwich to go, it will save you the expense of buying lunch at Sirena, which can be very expensive. Cheers to our server and bartender Juan, who worked very, VERY hard during our stay. The staff do an excellent job maintaining the grounds, pool and restaurant. Even though the resort is not gated and adjoins the town, it felt very safe. There really is nothing on Cayo Largo except the airport, resorts, marina and the town for the resort workers. And of course the beautiful beaches. I would definitely return to Villa Marinera, especially now that I know what to expect. It is by no means a luxury or a party resort, and you will be disappointed if you expect a waiter to bring you drinks at the pool, or are looking for lots of decadent foods, or posh accomadations. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing vacation in the hot sun, with idyllic views and still have the all-inclusive experience of plentiful food and drinks, then this is the right place. While I want to experience more of Cuba next vacation, I might be hard pressed not to return next year.

Absence of a sand beach to the sea, without being informed in advance, was a huge disappointment. Question about "Beach/Pools" together is wrong. Should have been: Beach = 0 stars; Pool = 5 stars. We'd like to come back!

Memories Cayo Largo: Resort improving

This was our 4th trip to Sol Cayo Largo. The weather was great, a little windy and the tides were higher than usual. staff were outstanding, food okay. The resort is doing modest upgrades. All the talk by staff are expressing good things to come to the resort because of the Americans they accept to be visiting soon. I was told while exchanging some money that very soon the US dollar will be 1 for 1 in all of Cuba. Had a great time and will be returning in the fall.

WE had a wonderful holiday at the Sol Pelicano resort in Cayo Largo Cuba The buildings were a little "tired" but we felt that added to the charm of the place. It was impeccably clean and well looked after. The staff were friendly, and helpful. The food was acceptable. Drinks were fine. It was the perfect spot for our 4 year old Granddaughter and I would recommend it for children of that age. Large, foot deep pool was perfect for her to play in without too much worry on parents. Grand Memories Cayo Largo: All around wonderful resort!

This is one of the better resorts in Cayo Largo. There have been a lot of renovations recently. The food is very good and the staff are all wonderful! I have been travelling to Cuba for the last 10 years or so and this is my favourite place to go to.

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Relaxing Resort

We loved how everything was laid out. Everything easily accessible and very clean. Even all the public bathrooms. The train that takes you to Cayo Largo to see attractions and go on the Catamaran to Sirena beach and excursions was awesome. The room was really nice. The unfortunate part was that there wasn't much of a beach area and it was so windy u couldn't enjoy the beach anyway. The food could've been better. No yogurt or ice cream. We found iT very clean,the grounds were kept very clean such as raking The beach,pool was cleaned every day and checked,the room was cleaned Daily with a nice L shaped balcony to look over the ocean,food is not gourmet and they could have some help in HOW to cook meat,fish was good Overall there was food for everybody,s liking,we sure will go back.

Fabulous beach, tho fun waves will be too much for smaller children. Lots of chairs, palapas & portable umbrellas. Lots of opportunity for walking. Fabulous staff, too. But the resort is somewhat dated... "quaint"...& 5 mins from airport.

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: We will return again.

We have been to this resort many times before, it's good value, friendly staff, we noticed new paint and railings on many of the buildings. Changes to the lobby seating area for the better. The suite interiors need updating. Of the two fire alarm devices in our room, one was missing and the power indicator light on the other was not illuminated, I noticed this in the main restaurant devices as well. Memories Cayo Largo: It's all about the beach

The hotel itself is getting a little tired despite having a fresh coat of whitewash over the previous decorative painting. The grounds are becoming more beautiful with time as plants continue to flourish under the care of the gardeners. The beds we got this time were better, but I still heard others complain about bad ones. Seems its luck-of-the-draw here. Be prepared to ask for a change if it's not working. The further you walk down the beach, it continues to pile up. Another complaint I have about this hotel is an inability to control inappropriate behaviour on the beach. There was an enthusiastic (male& female) couple insisting on displaying sexual behaviour indiscreetly on the beach, all times of day. Maybe a lifeguard could be employed to keep an eye....

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Little Jewel in the heart of the Caribbean.

Over all we had a great time. The accommodations were good. Clean and everything worked. One thing we started doing a few years ago was bringing our own pillow. Best $10 you could spend. We squeeze them down on top of our luggage. Then we leave them for the maid who at this resort was just ecstatic to get them. The food was a bit blaned here and very repetitious. Nice place to have your morning coffee. I love this place because of the constant warm breeze. The little beach bar right on the beach is a great place to hang out and consume mojotos. The waves are always kind of ruff so the free all inclusive bus ride to the marina and then the free boat ride to Paridiso beach is a highlight. This beach is beautiful and rated 4th in the world. When at the Marina consider launch. For only 3 pesos you get a half chicken that has been brined with salt and vinegar and then deep fried. Crispy and delicious. Beers are 1 peso too. The last day we rented a schooter and that was a ball. The staff are great. Nice friendly people.

Memories Cayo Largo: Overall Good

Location on the beach was good, but the Sol Pelicano further down the beach has the best beach in that area (less wavy and windy). Staff are generally helpful and the food was good for Cuba (from what I hear). Rooms are quite dated but hotel grounds are very well maintained compared to the Sol Pelicano. Would recommend this hotel if you're going to Cayo Largo.

Memories Cayo Largo: Great place to relax and do Nothing

If you are looking for a place to relax and sit by the beach or by the pool and only to do this, then this is the place for you. Beach is beautiful, pool area was nice. There was only one day we couldn’t find a place on the beach to sit in the shade, not problems any other time. There is not much else to do other then relax. There is only 1 excursion that they offer that gives you something to do. The others are to go to another beautiful beach, and relax. Like I said, if you just want to lie  [... read more]around, this is perfect! We were there from Jan 28 to Feb 5, 2016. Weather was amazing the whole week! ROOMS: These are average. Do not expect high end. If you are one to spend time in your room or need a good bed, this is not for you. Bed is a typical worn out sprint mattress. But if you’re just using it for sleeping, it does the trick. Room is very out dated looking, but that is just the decor. Rooms were clean from everyday use, but could use a serious scrub down and a fresh paint job. Bathroom is nothing you write home about. Again needs a good scrub down. You have key cards to enter your room and another key to open your safe. There is a small bar fridge (not stocked). Hair dryer worked great. TV worked and was clear. You have 2 English channels (Discovery and CNN) Our ceiling fan works, would wobbled like crazy and looked like it was going to fall off. AC was a bit confusing. Not sure if it is like this in every room though. When we got there, the AC was turned off. We looked all over the room for a switch to turn it on, but nothing seemed to work. We noticed on the wall that there was a little plastic holder that looks like it would hold a remote, we figured that was for the AC. We were going to go to the front desk to ask if this was missing. As we were leaving, right by the door there is a covered panel box. We opened it up and noticed one of the breakers was turned off, we switched the breaker and the AC turned on. We left for supper and when we came back, it was a bit less muggy but not very cool. We left it for the night thinking that maybe this is what the AC was like. After 2 days, the AC finally started to work. Our room was cold. Sometimes we would have to turn the AC off because it was so cold. So if you don’t think your AC is working, it probably isn’t. FOOD: This was average also. We never went hungry, we always found something to eat, but it is very repetitive. Buffet open 7:30-10:30am(breakfast), 1:00-3:00pm (lunch), 7:00 – 10:00pm (dinner)- For dinner they have 4 stations. 1) Grilling station. They have pieces of meat (chicken, steak, pork, sausage, etc) out and you tell the cook which meat you want and the grill it on a grilling plate. 2) Pasta Station. You tell the cook what type of pasta you want (2 or 3 precooked types) and you pick the ingredients that you want in your pasta (Onion, garlic, pesto, olives, ham, sausage, capers, etc) and pick what sauce you want (tomatoe, meat or alfredo) This mix it all together and cook over a hot plate and serve it to you. 3) Fish station. Same idea of the grilling station, just different types of fish. 4) Main Buffet station. While we were here it was either fish or a roast (beef or pork) that is cut and served to you. In the main Buffett for the sides is where I had the most trouble with. Didn’t recognize most of the dishes and are not brave enough to try. There was very little fresh vegetables but there was some fresh fruit. There was a bread table, lunch meat table, cheese table and dessert table. There ice cream was really good! The buffet was closed for lunch for the week that we were there, so we ate from the pool snack bar. For breakfast, they had an omelette/egg station where you pick your ingredients and they make you a fresh omelette. They also had a fresh crepe station. They had some left over food from the night before, and some more traditional breakfast items (hard boiled eggs, ham and pineapple, Bacon (or what they call bacon)in the main buffet station. They had a cereal section with milk and fruit. The bread section with the toaster. Pool Side Snack Bar open 11:ooam – 6:00pm. This was food that was made to order. Very limited menu items, but were very good. They had Pizza, Pasta, Hamburgers, Chicken, steak, and pork sandwiches. Pizza was amazing, I like the hamburgers and the husband liked the chicken sandwich. Gets very repetitive when you eat it everyday though. Beach side Buffet – Open 11am – 3pm (then turn into an a la carte 7:00-10:00pm) We only went there once and didn’t like anything we seen so we didn’t stay and went to the pool snack bar and very came back to try again, so I can’t really give a review. International A La Carte – We were told that you get 1 a la carte meal. You can see if they have room when booking to book a second one, but you are only guaranteed 1. We choose this one. It was ok. Nice change from the buffet, but far from fine dining. I had the gnocchi (very good) as a starter. Husband had the seafood cocktail (he didn’t like it. Wasn’t a fan of the mayo sauce the shrimp were in). Doe the main we both had the pork with citrus sauce. Pork was over cooked and didn’t taste any citrus in the sauce. Potato mash tasted like it was from a box. Veggies were just ok. No dessert. SERVICE: If you are one that likes to me waited on, this is not for you. There is no pool side or beach servers. You must go to the bar on your own. There is a small bar at the beach. One bar at the pool, 1 bar the at disco (open 7:00pm to 2am) and a bar that is open 24 hours by the theater. Drinks are served in a SMALL plastic glass. So bring something for your drinks or be prepared to walk back and forth a lot. I wasn’t a fan of any of the drinks. I don’t drink beer, I’m more into fruity drinks, and they did not have any here. Their Pina Coladas were terrible. If you don’t like too much booze, make sure you tell them. They are 3 parts rum to 1 part mix. The servers are very friendly (especially Noel in the snack bar) Just don’t expect to be catered to. HOTEL: The grounds are very well taking care of. The room are far from the ocean, so the “Oceanview rooms” aren’t really that great. Yes you can see the Ocean, but very far away. Front lobby if very nice, 4 seating areas and about 8 high table and chairs to sit at. This is where you wait for transportation of to get WIFI. There is a booth for your tourist providers (Sunwing, Transtat, Air Canada. Etc) this is where you book your tours. To your right is the main buffet. You the left of that is your international A La Carte and Disco. The Disco is very small. Has one bar with a wrap around bar top. 2 pool tables and a small dance floor (maybe 6 x 6) Not much to see. In the middle there is a big booth and that is where you reserve your A La Cartes. (from 4:00-6:00pm) To the left of the lobby you will find some bathrooms and a little shop where you can buy a few souvenirs, alcohol and some toiletries and snacks. Outside of the store, there is a 24 hour bar and little patio (not very big) and beside that is the Theater. In the middle is the pool. There are 2 pools. One has the bar which has a swim up bar and volley ball net. It starts at 1.3m and gets to 0.3m at the bar. In the middle of the 2 pools is the hot tub (which was not working the week we were there) The other side has a little area for the kids and just another open pool for swimming. At the end of the pool there is the Pool side snack bar. To the side of the pool there is the towel shop and some games. There is also a little souvenir shop in the back on your way to the beach. There are 3 walkways to the beach. One on the far right leads you to the nude side of the beach, the middle one leads you to the beach buffet and bar and the far left just to the beach. The is a Tennis court behind the theater as well as a clinic, pharmacy and spa back there also. ENTERTAINMENT: During the day there is no entertainment. At 3:30pm the Entertainment crew comes to the pool, does a 3 mins dance and then leaves. 1 or 2 will stay behind and try and get a volley ball game going or some pool exercises. Don’t count on these people to have fun. Their Showtime starts at 10:00pm. They are ok. Nothing to crazy. OVERALL IMPRESSION: This resort I found had a lot of older vacationers (60+ years) which may be why there isn’t much entertainment or activities to do. We are 33 and 35 so we couldn’t really relate to anyone else. To give you an idea, I was unfortunally on that time of the month and at the store at the resort only had 1 single tampon, yet had a whole section for adult diapers. Also, I would say close to 75% of the people there were Italian. Because of this, the staff and entertainment crew spoke very little English. It made it very hard to participate in anything when you don’t know what they are talking about. It was also very hard to meet friends with the language barrier. OTHER TIPS: If you can, try and have a few CUC when you land for tips (if you like to tip) we didn’t have any until we got the hotel and exchanged and felt bad because we couldn’t tip. Advise to the women, when landing at the airport, if you have to use the washroom, make sure you have some toilet paper as there is none there.

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Amazing beaches

The grounds were clean and green. The rooms were cleaned thoroughly and the cleaning staff are friendly. The variety and quality in food was good. They had chicken, steak and pork. They make a sausage that's good. I'm not a fan of sausages, but they make a great sausage. The beaches are absolutely breathtaking. Clear water, white sand and no seaweed. I don't like seaweed, and it was a lot of fun not having to worry about seaweed. Lifeguards watch and do their job. There's also a little hut whe [... read more]re you can have a drink. I drank a lot of water there. I didn't get sick. They have bottled water they serve. No worries about water and food making you sick.

Starfish Cayo Largo: Disappointing

Lets start with the positive. Amazing beach!!! Room on second floor good,clean and updated recently. Pizzeria located outside main bar had very good pizza and service. Buffet due to our waiter Victor made our breakfast and dinner experience excellent. Unfortunately for the negative. Please take into consideration I have been to Cuba over 12 times in many different locations. We have also been informed the resort has been sold to Memories during the vacation . Buffet not big enough for the amount of people at the resort. Lunch was a nightmare everyday. A few items at the beach restaurant and not enough seating. We could never get a seat!!!. The pool Bar was absolutely disgusting both service and food. This was a family resort with no French Fries or Ice Cream!! Our only option was half way across the resort was the Pizzeria. Lobby Bar was the Everything Room that not much happened. There was no 24 snacks. Not enough seating for the size of resort. One to two bar staff serving drinks. At night this was the only bar opened and was very frustrating when you wanted to get a drink. You could be waiting up to 30 min. The bar staff that worked evenings were Great!!!... and oh so overworked!!!! They did their best given the situation. Frequently running out of drink options. Nighttime show was dancing almost every single night. Needed to change it up. Pool liner in desperate need of replacement. The all inclusive water-sport was non existent. For 2 peso a person you could take a taxi shuttle. Let me tell you it was an absolutely Terrifying experience!!!. 14 people, no seat belts, and seats that were held together by tape. It was a horrible 20 min drive, my husband hit his head on the roof and I got mild whiplash, and when we got to the beach, it was nothing special. We left 20 min later. Luckily the taxi on the way back was newer with a good driver. Hopefully the new owners will turn things around. This resort does have the potential to be a good resort. We were approached by staff asking us to write a good review for the hotel for Trip Advisor. I guess thats why it was rated #2.

injoy staying at ole playa blanca...the staff is great and my océan view of my room was perfect . food is good and capuccino or express in the mornig was perfect. the lobby is very relaxing with my Margarita. i travelling solo for my first time and did i ever injoy That meeting new peaple. i Will go back☺...

Grand Memories Cayo Largo: Lovely, comfortable resort.

The staff were amazing !!! Everyone was welcomed, thanked, hugged and just made to feel they really wanted us to be there. Grounds were really pretty - the units spread out over the grounds so you never felt crowded. The beach was great and the ocean was warm and wonderful ! Will definitely return.
