We stayed from December 22 to Dec 29 and the resort is beautiful. That said, we stayed in the Royal section, where the amenities are elevated. Food was plentiful, staff are wonderful. There is an older section that I would steer clear of... it needs some work. The al a carte restaurants are good. On the Royal side, you are assigned a butler who will look after anything you need. It's Adults Only, so it's very laid back. Cuba is very economical, so I would suggest always a 5*, or 4.5* at t[... read more]he very least, and upgrade to Royal, Premium or whatever the resort calls it for upgraded room/amenities.

Resonance Musique Varadero: Very disappointing
I’m sorry to write that, but our experience was very unpleasant
I went with my son to celebrate his graduation and it was bad very bad
My son had dirty sheets on his bed with visible stains of blood. We had to go twice to the desk to ask somebody to send housekeeper to change the sheets. He had a blanket in his room that smell like a piss we asked to change it, but nobody did so he didn’t use that blanket. There was no hand towels and face towels at all.
In my room on the second day, I had po[... read more]wer off for a whole day so I didn’t have air conditioner. It was impossible to find anyone who can fix it on the property. The resort is very old broken tiles doors that cannot close in a room. It was disaster. I never stay in such bad resort and it says four star I wonder who give them those four star I would hardly give twoThey play music every day till 1:00 AM. I was wondering for who they play because there was no one from the guest. I spoke to many people who was complaining about so loud music too late. It is adult adults only resort but most of adults was over 45 and they play Latino rap, music, nonstop, and same at the beach. I definitely blame myself for not doing my homework about this resort. I did last minute booking and I definitely regret it. I would not recommend this resort to nobody.

Playa Pesquero: Stay Away
My daughter and I were there over Christmas holidays, and we were so disappointed. I had been there 3 times prior and enjoyed the experience.
We were given a sub par room, no working phone, no thermostat adjustment to AC, room very musty and humid, signs of water damage. Spent 3-4 hours convincing front desk to move us. They did not show must interest.
Swimming pool was green, grounds of resort unkept and broken down in a lot of areas
The food was horrible, fatty pork, beans and plain pasta.[... read more] No fruits or vegtables. Lots of empty buffet containers. They do not replace when empty. Stale dried out buns and bread. No butter, salt, pepper, no mustard at times. Tiny paper napkins maybe at table.
La Pippa 24hour restaurant, only hot dog on white bread...nothing else. Al a Carte was not what was on the menu. You were given two choices, cheapest poor quality choices.
Alcohol was Havana Club, not much else. No mixes except slushy sugar water or tonic.
The beach and ocean were beautiful and most of the staff were very Kind. Entertainment staff don't do much but dance at side of pool, worst I have ever seen.
Evening shows were dismall, nobody in the seats watching.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Ocean view Paradisus de Oro
The lobby area is attractive and is centre for restaurants, entertainment and bars.
The Ocean view room is well situated for pool and beach and 5 minute walk to lobby etc
The beach and pool areas were great.
The room was spacious and well equipped but a little run down but bed and seating were fine. The grounds in that area were not groomed and no direct view of beach but most of grounds were nice.
Food was ok, nothing spectacular but plentiful (except no bacon, limited fruit and no potatoes[... read more] so do not expect fries).
Some professional musicians (flute, classical guitar, viola) were excellent and rest of entertainment average!
Staff excellent and most spoke excellent English.

Playa Luxury Cayo Guillermo: It's called "Luxury" for a reason
My adult son and I decided to celebrate Christmas away from home this year and so glad we chose Hotel Playa Luxury Cayo Guillermo. We were welcomed with a glass of champagne the minute we arrived. The staff were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. We were treated like royalty.
The grounds are immaculate, so much so, that no garbage bins can be found on the grounds. If you have trash you can dispose of it in any of the building but the staff are diligent when it comes to keeping things cl[... read more]ean and tidy
We took advantage of the beautiful spa and used the pool only once as we are beach people. The beach is absolutely gorgeous, and again, immaculate (despite a few small jellyfish which weren't a problem)
The food was outstanding and all reservations for the on site restaurants are made for you in advance. We were assigned a butler who was always available to answer questions and fulfill any requests.
The only complaint I have is that there was an issue with the hot water. We had to call a few times to have it rectified but they were always able to get it working. Other than that, our stay was incredible. It's probably the most beautiful resort we've ever stayed at...highly recommend

Iberostar Origin Laguna Azul: Family vacation
First of all I’ve been in Cuba ten times and I never had complain until now. First complain, we lost two days of our vacation due to cancelled flight by Westjet. Second complain, when we arrived in Varadero our luggage was not on the plane. Basically all passenger's luggage was left in Montreal. No explanation on the part of Westjet. I believed it was intentional since the Captain never told us about this. We received our luggage after three days and we have to pay a taxi to pick up at the[... read more] airport. Third complain, when we arrived at the hotel our book rooms were already given to somebody else. Just imagine five oceanview rooms in the same floor gone. We were given temporary rooms until available rooms come up. I told the hotel reception that they should not given the rooms to somebody else however, their reason was we did not arrive on the agreed date. So blame it to Westjet. Now we lost two days of our vacation and we were not able to get the rooms next to each other. For my entire family’s first trip to Cuba, it was a nightmare. The inconvenience and stress that we endure is not worth to have this vacation. Lastly Westjet is not handicapped friendly airline. My wife, mother and brother was in the wheelchair but we are the last group to board the plane. The humiliation as if we are not welcome was hard to take. This happened in Montreal and so to those Westjet counter personnel I forgot to ask the specific persons names you will become senior too one day you will know how we feel.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Holguin: Quality of Service needs improvement
The resort, beach, pool, grounds, were beautiful but the efficiency and quality of service must be improved significantly specially in the main buffet area. This place was not at all organized and people stood in line for hours to get food. Many empty trays were not refilled in a timely manner. The layout of the main dining area has to be redone to ensure the flow of traffic is optimized.
We were lucky that we booked the premium class and so we had more options for food. The snack bar didn't ha[... read more]ve condiments like ketchup or mustard. The pizza place next to the snack bar was not in service most of the time.
The wifi worked only for 2 days out of our 7 night stay which is unacceptable. Another example is at the bites restaurant for breakfast, they had just 1 burner operating for the egg station creating unnecessary lineups. There were several impractical issues that made our stay unpleasant. Many times toilet paper would run out in the public washrooms and would not be replaced. There were roaches in the Japanese and Italian restaurants as well as in our rooms.
On the positive side our butler, Carlos was an amazing individual and did whatever he could do satisfy our needs. We did enjoy the international/Mediterranean restaurant. We did get a free lobster dinner on Christmas Eve which was nice. Most of the staff were pleasant.
We feel sorry for the people but it appears that the management is creating inefficiencies that are going to drive tourists away from this resort. We won't be going back to this resort.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Just OK
PROS:
Beach- Awesome white sand clean beach, water clear
Staff- Most are pleasant and helpful
Food- Diamond side beach bbq - Excellent, Cuban night - Excellent, Buffet - Good
Cafe Latte & Cappucino - Great
Grounds: Well looked after and lush
CONS:
Beach: Beach is nice. Always lots of chairs available. Diamond upgrade side there is no bathroom so if you need to go you either pee in the ocean or walk down to the Beach Grill restaurant on the regular side- which is an issue for those[... read more] with mobility issues - Shouldn't Diamond side have a bathroom since you are paying for an upgrade? The facility is actually there but boarded up and from what we understand has been for quite a long time
Drinks: Beer & wine is good and maybe Pina Coladas (depending on who is making it). The rest of the drinks were not good at all. Ordered 2 margaritas and one glass came half full and both were sour and awful. We realize that there is a shortage of some things but honestly we know better drinks could be made if the effort were put in
Coffee: Regular coffee in the buffet was the worst we have ever drank. Imagine pouring water through the same grinds 5 times - that is what every cup tasted like, weak as dishwater. Guaranteed there was only 1/4 of the grinds that should have went in to make a pot of coffee. Cappuccinos and Cafe Lattes were really good, thank goodness
Food: The food served at the Diamond side noon bbq was excellent. Buffet is good IF you get things cooked directly in front of you. Like chicken & pork ... all good. The items in the serving trays were often terrible. Meatballs that were so overcooked they were hard and dry. Alot of what we didn't like was the fact that it was cooked badly (way overcooked), not what was served. The a la cartes: the only one we enjoyed where the food was good was the Tex Mex. The others were awful. Special mention to The Pearl where we were told when we sat down they had no chicken (but the buffet had all kinds) so we had fish or beef to choose from. We ordered the beef stroganoff. It was the worst meal we have ever had. It was beef grizzle chunks in beef packet gravy. Neither one of us could even chew it because it was literally all grizzle. Dessert was good though lol
The special Christmas Eve dinner was interesting. The A/C was so cold in there everyone was using their napkins as shawls lol. We were served a scallop in a shell that was so overcooked it was hard as a rock. But we got a piece of beef at the next course that was excellent. Out of 5 courses 2 were good - the beef and the soup.
One evening they did an open air Cuban night. Now that was excellent! They had pork and chicken, shrimp etc and all cooked beautifully so I am sorry but there is no excuse for some of the terrible food served at the Pearl and Grazie. We are very understanding of shortages, but not understanding of being served something that not even a dog could eat. Consistency would make a huge difference.
Front desk staff: When we first arrived they were pleasant but when we tried to get information when we were about to leave about what time the bus would arrive to take us back to the airport they looked at us like we were bothering them.
Room: We had a superior room and everything was fine with it except for no hot water for a few hours one day but that was remedied quickly. The housekeeping staff were excellent.
Overall, we enjoyed our time away and the beach bbq and Cuban night saved the day as it made this trip nice. Would we go back? No. For the price we paid we expected more. Yes, yes, this is Cuba and expectations have to be kept lower... however, some things were just too ridiculous. There are alot more places to discover and this was just so-so.

Grand Memories Holguin: Declining Quality
Keep in mind that this hotel is 2h bus drive from the airport in the very secluded part of Cuba, there is one hotel close to it but it is shut down, so if privacy is critical for you this is the place for you. However, having a small buffet for 300+ tourists with lineups to go into the buffet is not acceptable, multiple roaches (5+ roaches) roaming around the Japanese restaurant made us leave this a-lacarte booking before the cooking begun. Great weather and lack of mosquitos somehow made up [... read more]for these deficiencies, although after 15 visits to Cuba things are getting worse each time, which is unfortunate.

Grand Memories Varadero: Memorable trip
The people of Cuba make up for the lack of luxury that one might expect. The resort was functional for the most part, the rooms require renovations, the showers are luke warm, the food was better than expected, but set your expectations! The beach was lovely and the pool was good too! If you know what to expect for Cuba, I recommend this ressort, it was a wonderful trip!

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Princess Paradisio Del Mar
We had an amazing stay at this all-inclusive resort in Cuba. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome with their warmth, friendliness, and constant smiles. The level of service throughout our stay was exceptional, and the team went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying every moment.
The resort itself was beautifully maintained, and had everything we needed for a relaxing get away. The food offered good variety, and there was always something enj[... read more]oyable to choose from at every meal.Thw drinks were plentiful, refreshing, and severed with great hospitality.
I would also encourage guests to consider bringing small personal essentials and treats to share. Items such as Tylenol, feminine products, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste toothbrushes, powdered soups, crackers, peanut butter and sweets for the children are greatly appreciated.packing these items in ziplockss or tied socks makes it easy to distribute. These everyday necessities can make a meaningful difference for families and staff, many of whom work incredibly hard while earning approximately $35 USD per month. In addition take lots of one dollar USD bills for tips.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a safe, friendly, stress-free all-inclusive escape in Cuba.

Sol Palmeras: A Lovely Piece of Paradise
For a resort in Cuba, I would rate this resort, a 9/10. I have stayed in Cayo Coco and Holguin before and this hotel definitely had the best rooms. The water pressure was great and the room was made up every day and was kept very clean by the exceptional maid service. There is a lovely coffee bar, an ice cream bar near the beach, a larger bar near the beach and then a small bar very close to the beach plus a lovely bar inside. The snack bar had good food, including hamburgers, fries and pizza. T[... read more]he buffet was completely adequate. The Cuban people give the very best that they have to tourists. There were no shortages. There were eggs, fruit, and bread everyday. The pizza was delicious and the pasta station was great. The entertainment is very lively and generous. There are many lovely areas to sit both inside and out while you are relaxing and enjoying time with your fellow travelers. The beach is spectacular. The water was warm and clear with ocean breezes creating waves. We felt very safe, knowing there was a lifeguard who was monitoring. There were fun activities on the beach as well, including stretching in the water and Zumba. I am not a drinker, but the others in my group enjoyed the bars and found the bartenders to be very friendly and accommodating. The nonalcoholic piña coladas were awesome. We had a spectacular holiday over Christmas and made many memories. We also did a day trip to Havana which I would highly recommend.
