Melia Las Americas: WOULD STAY HERE AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT
This is a beautiful resort, with very friendly staff. The food had flavour (which for Cuba is saying a lot from our past experience).
We arrived later in the evening just before the buffet was closing for the night. Boris was checking us in, and advised to go get something to eat and we could finish checking in after. (awesome - we were starving) We had our first experience with Manuel in the restaurant - absolutely amazing.
Manuel looked after us from that moment on, each morning we h[... read more]ad a table set for us with our orange juice waiting for us. We also met Wilfredo in the buffet restaurant - he was just as great as Manuel.
The bungalow we were in was large, clean and comfortable ( and it hadn;t been renovated yet) Living room area, dining room area, large bedroom, walk in closet - 2 sliding doors to the veranda.
We were very close to all restaurants, and the bungalow was super close to the swim up pool with the snack bar. We spent most of our time there as the pool was hardly used by anyone else. There were 4 cabana's and several deck loungers. Alberto was our main bartender there - he makes an absolutely delicious Banana Mama. He is also super friendly.
The beach was clean and very sandy. The next resort over was a bit rockier - but you could go on either.
There are several excursions you could do, but we chose not to go on any this time.
We were speaking with another guest who comes back every year for a golf tournament - he said it is a good course that is fun to play. (for any golfers out there)

Melia Buenavista: Excellent!!! Real Paradise!!!!
Beautiful resort, great people, great location - a little windy there from the Atlantic exposure, but in overall a great place to rest if you are looking for a quite and peaceful place. Food is excellent quality and plenty. The only down turn is the lack of the traditional buffet. All 3 restaurants are al 'carte there, so if you don't mind wasting your time in waiting for your food each day at the restaurant then you should be fine with that. Also in addition there is an excellent grill/pizza pl[... read more]ace at the main pool area, which gets the most popularity there and it is open from 12:30 to 5:30 every day. We spent there the week from April 14-21st and we had an amaizing time there.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Quiet Small 5 * Cuban resort
I was overall very pleased with this resort. It was good value for a 5 star Cuban resort. This is my 6th trip to the Caribbean (Negril Jamacia, Maya Riviera Mexico, Cayo Coco Cuba, Varadero Cuba) and have enjoyed all the trips and been pleased with every experience. We normally travel with a large group but on this trip we went as just a couple. Cuba is still the best value in the Caribbean for a sunny vacation. The Paradisus Rio De Oro is the best Cuban resort that I have visited. It cer[... read more]tainly does not compare to a 5 star resort outside Cuba but then again it is approx $1000 cheaper per couple than other countries in the region so offers great value. It was a mature well run resort that was not too large. The Cuban people are always so hospitable and pleasant and make the trip. The staff at this resort were better than most trying to make the week as pleasant as possible. The resort is older and made to Cuban construction standards so it is tired but this adds to the charm of the trip. It uses a lot of wood and marble and has a majestic ambiance. The grounds were well manicured and beautiful. The room and washroom were nice. The tub was small and the shower and the tub are combined. If you leave a few $ every day, the room is always cleaned and fridge always stocked. We were able to check in at 10:30 am on arrival so we were very happy after such and early start. The bus ride is about an hour but it is a pleasant ride that seems to go by fast as you experience the Cuban country side and culture in its raw form which is always interesting. The early morning flight at 6:00 am with the 2:00 am start time is difficult but you get to enjoy the entire 1st day at the resort.
The a la carte's are great; we were able to experience all 4 in a week and pre booked from Canada which is a nice option. The food was very tasty and the best Cuban a la cartes we have experienced. This resort had the best food of the Cuban resorts we have visited, but in general Cuban resort food is average, however we always find something to eat.
The entertainment was great. Every night was something different and the music is fantastic. It is part of the cultural enrichment experience.
The resort always seems quiet and not crowded with no lines. We were able to get chairs at both the beach and pool in the shade at any time of the day. No one has to get up at 5:00 am to save a chair at the beach. The beach was 1 km long so a beautiful walk up and down the beach every day. The sand is white and the water is turquoise. The surf was rough the week we visited but this seems typical. The sand part of the beach was awesome but the water side had some drawbacks. There was coral 1 to 2 meters off the water line so you could not easily walk directly into the water. You had to walk up the beach 400 m from the chairs to find a spot that you could walk into the water and enjoy the surf. The coral along the beach line was in the surf zone so it did not have any snorkeling opportunities or fish. At the end of the beach was a coral cliff and reef that you could see colored fish but you had to be a confident swimmer to venture out the 400m in rough surf to that area. Unfortunately we are beach people, so we likely would not go back to the resort because of the surf characteristics. Restaurants at the pool and beach were both very nice and we ate there every day.
The clientele of the resort appears to be an older crowd so it is a quiet vacation. Cuba always feels safe so people are always coming and going by cab or bus into the town to get a taste of the culture. I ran to the town 1 day and saw how the local folks lived.
The resort offers a Royal section that we did not get a chance to experience but we met a British couple who were staying there for 2 weeks and they loved it.
Overall a great trip and very nice resort. We met many who return multiple times for the serenity, staff, entertainment, and value but the beach surf is a small draw back.

Melia Jardines del Rey: The Best Time Ever!
We loved this resort! it was amazing! the resort is a large one, so there was a lot going on, we didn't quite get to see everything we wanted, (one week was definitely too short) The resort itself is very beautiful, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The beach was magnificent! white sandy beach, calm waters for the most part, loved it! Our building was located close to the beach and was in a quiet area, and yet fairly close to the main building, so we were able to relax in a quiet setting[... read more]. The a la carte meals were awesome, I wasn't overly excited about the buffet, for a large resort, I would have expected more food stations, the line ups for fresh food were way too long had to wait a long time. Overall the food at the buffet was good. Just expect large lineups. During our stay, it was the busiest time for the resort, there were a lot of people, and staff worked to full capacity. Even though with all that was happening, and witnessing the customer service team work to accommodate all requests, it just amazed me that they worked so professionally to help those that required urgent assistance, they took the time to assist me with my simple request to obtain a vase for flowers I received for my birthday (they didn't have vases at the resort, so the staff improvised and made me one out of a water bottle) Overall, I would highly recommend this resort, we had the best time, I definitely plan on going back, hopefully in December of this year! :)

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Week of Relaxation..
We have been to Cuba several times. This Hotel was the best of all aspects. The room was spacious. It was attractive and linens were nice. The bed was the most comfortable of all the beds in Cuba to date. No issues at all. The rooms in the main section are all "garden view". However, this was not an issue and the serenity offered by the gardens was actually a welcome change. Lots of song birds to wake up to and there was a great little garden area that was actually their own tree nursery[... read more]. They set it up like a garden area with paths and benches. Nice touch. The resort had a small boutique hotel feel, but with all the amenities. We were easily able to make 4 reservations for A la cartes. Our least favourite was Cuban. We loved the effort made by Manny our "Japanese" chef. What a lovely young man. The food was very good in the Japanese. The meal in the Mediterranean was very good, and we thought that would be the best but the we went to El Patio and it was even better. The difference here than other Cuban resorts is the specialty restaraunts actually serve a completely different meal selection, very high end. Nice effort was made in serving. Wine and drink was always offered and staff were attentive. No request was too much. Lately at other Cuban resorts the servers and staff always seemed to be avoiding eye contact. Not here. They all went out of their way to greet you and offer you services. From the front desk staff who had exceptional English and took a few minutes with every guest to explain all, to the bar tenders who were very professional and always made the extra effort to add in a straw or a slice of lime. The bank was open when we arrived, quick service. We were hours early, but had a room available. We were only a bldg from main lobby, which meant it was a bit of a walk to beach, but great pathways to walk on. We even had some staff tell us that we did not need to tip them! Never had that happen before. The staff are genuinely happy. They enjoy being together and laughing. They greet each other each am with kisses on the cheek and a hug. They quickly greet returning guests they recognize in the same warm fashion. This genuinely pleasant staff spills over onto the guests. This comes directly from management creating a relaxed atmosphere. The buffet was very good. Lots of selection. I do wish they allowed self service for coffee/tea. The beach was the biggest drawback for me. Directly in front of the hotel the beach has large areas of a shale kind of rock/coral. It is impossible to enter there really. You do need to walk about 200-300 feet up the beach to get into the water safely. For this reason only I would not return. My husband didn't mind it as he snorkels. He saw a lot of great fish. However, I will say that there are people that go there 3 times a year. I asked one elderly lady why she goes every year. She said she has a business. Only has one week off and she knows that her vacation will always be A1. No surprises. No disappointments. I think many liked that aspect of it. Plus it has a feeling of being cared for and people are very welcoming. The beach itself was beautiful to sit and we never had a problem getting seating under shade, no matter if it was 08:00 or 11:00. Oh I must mention the music. Phenomenal. I love that the resort stayed Cuban. Lovely guitar music, violin, traditional singing, dance music at times in evening for guests. Not over whelming. Just perfect. I can see why so many do return.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Very nice resort
The Paradisus Princesas Del Mar was a very nice and clean resort, the rooms were well kept and in very good condition. There is a great number of restaurant on the resorts which offer a good variety of food which was good overall. The evening entertainment was great but during the day it la is a little and was pretty quiet. The resort is adult only and very quiet until approximately 9-10 am. Overall a great place but We would have to say that the service was very poor and not uncommon to sit the[... read more]re and wait for about 20 Minutes just to be acknowledged prior anyone coming over to take your order. If something could be improved that is definitely it the service for sure. If you are someone that puts a lot of emphasis on having internet access well there is no free wifi and the internet service is very poor.
Overall we had a great vacation, the weather was not the greatest for the beach with high winds so it was more of a pool week.

Melia Cayo Coco: Loved Resort
Everything was very clean. People working at resort were always pleasant and helpful. Food was excellent with many choices. Activities plentiful. Loved painting at beach, foam party in pool, area where you could do yoga, stretching, etc. The shows at night were amazing (dancers very talented) and had the option of staying in lobby for other entertainment.
Lots of umbrellas for shade and when we were there chairs were changed to white, with cushions and more cabanas added.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Not a true 5 star
While it wasn't a true 5 star, the locale was great, the staff were great. The food was not great so I recommend you bring your favourite spice for steak, fish and chicken.
The airline was a nightmare. Air Transat has lost my business for sure. Terrible seating arrangement "high density" seating configuration best suited for premordial dwarfs. Air Transat call centre left you feeling that there was a bit of anti anglophone happening.

Melia Marina Varadero: Clean, modern, resort
View of the marina was really awesome and an added bonus. The hotel is very clean and modern by Cuban standards. Food was average. The French a la carte was fantastic. Other a la cartes very average. Paradisus Varadero: Royal service - a little disappointing.
As this was our second trip to Paradisus, royal service, our expectations were that it would be similar to our previous trip 6 years ago. We were transported by bus and dropped at the family concierge building where there was no one to help or advise us where to go. Eventually someone took us to the royal service area, they took our passports and left us just sit there for almost an hour. When I enquired about a room they said come back a couple of hours later but it still was not ready and t[... read more]hey didn't seem helpful at all. When paying for royal service I would expect a room to be ready. There were no premium drinks in the room, just 2 cans of beer and very limited premium beer or wine in the bars. Beautifully built place but no maintenance, tiles missing from the bottom of the pool, jacuzzis not working, overall a little run down. As always, the staff were the saviour of this hotel. Amazing dining and bar staff in the royal service area. Could not have been happier with their service. Beautiful beach, amazing water, perfect temperature. Enjoyed the vacation, but feel we didn't get what we paid for.

Melia Cayo Coco: Wonderful place!
We had a very nice week at this clean and well organized resort! The food was very nice with fresh seafood (my favorite) for lunch and supper at the buffet, of course the buffet is plentiful of other delicious food too, what I like about this resort is they gave us different kind of food, so you don't have to have the same food every day. There are three restaurants and they are very nice. The service is excellent! The staff is very polite and friendly. The manager is so attentive, he reall[... read more]y looks after the business. The entertaiment is very nice, I just wish that they would encourage guests to get out to dance more, I had a chance to play the bongos with the band at the restaurant by the beach and I was so happy. I also loved the fresh coconuts from the friendly gardeners. I certainly recommend this resort to other vacationers.

Melia Cayo Coco: Great all-round resort!
This resort gives you great value. The food is good for Cuban standards, and the standard restaurant provides a variety of choices both for people who want to eat healthy and those who don't! We particularly enjoyed the salad bar, delicious Cuban ice creams, and variety of meats (especially fish) available at the grill. My husband and I also enjoyed the fare, ambiance and service at the International restaurant - great appetizers too!
The staff at Melia Cayo Coco is very friendly, from the[... read more] gardeners to servers to the entertainment staff.
The beach is a lovely long beach at this the resort, but it was unfortunately very windy during the week we were there and the 'red flag' was up, so we didn't swim in the ocean. Because everyone congregated around the pool, there were insufficient umbrellas to provide shade and sadly, it's common for people to monopolize chairs when they're not even at the pool, so there was not enough seating.
I enjoyed the dance lessons and aquafit, and my husband always partook in volleyball; but we would have enjoyed participating in more daytime activities if they were offered, as they were 3 years ago when I last visited the resort.
The night-time shows were generally good, particularly the live rock concert, the dancers, and jazz band (with the amazing saxophonist)!

Melia Peninsula Varadero: Hotel with Great Potential
This hotel is not a 4.5* hotel as rated in the travel magazines. It is closer to 3/3.5*. However it has great potential to be a 5* with some simple improvements.
The location is great, on the beach, and away from high density traffic. The buildings are in good shape with minor repairs/painting needed. The grounds are maintained and clean but there is room for improvement. They could do a better job with the entrance and lobby areas. Filling in the empty pool areas with flowering plants would gr[... read more]eatly improve the image. Signage around the compound is poor and in several areas the outdoor lights did no work.
Our room was large but lacked some basic amenities, e.g., no coffee maker, need an indoor fan rather than running the AC all the time, mini bar poorly stocked, a luggage stool would be helpful, mattresses are old and uncomfortable, the room is dark once the curtains are pulled.
Food in general was good but could do with more vegetarian/healthy choices, e.g., no whole wheat/multi grain breads, no hot cereals, vegetables over cooked and mostly in oil. Labeling of the cooked dishes would go a long way to help improve the selection process and thereby reduce the wait times.
Service at times were sub-par even after tipping. Unfortunately workers seem to expect a tip for doing the normal jobs. It took 4 days and multiple complaints to get the television fixed in our room. We had to make multiple requests for upgraded services we paid for, e.g., water was not delivered daily, took 3 days to get our robes, etc.
Definitely need more servers/waiters in the buffet restaurant. Table are not cleared timely resulting in high wait times, long delays getting coffee refills.
Entertainment was excellent for both adults and children. Lots of variety and fun things to do.
The 3 tours we took were very good. The guides were excellent, spoke good English and were very knowledgeable. The one negative comment - the buses were always late for the start of the tour.
Overall we had a very good time and met some very nice people. The staff were courteous and generally helpful. We felt very safe at this facility.

Melia Las Antillas: Nice Resort
Staff very friendly as usual for Cuba. Small resort so not tons of walking which is nice. Elevator access which is great for when your tires or for those who have difficulties walking.
Grounds were always well kept and pretty. The surrounding water within resort was cool they have a shark that swims around and eats the algae. That was neat. The rooms are a great size and lots of space. Maids were prompt and friendly. I personally didn't like the Italian restaurant. But other then that there is[... read more] always something to eat. our room was stocked with 3 bottles of liquor (but not right away had to ask for it) not a big deal. And we were suppose to alway have two beers restocked and kept in fridge thy never happened
The only suggestion or complaint I would have to say is that they do need more entertainment durin. The day at the pool. There was very little and nothing that exciting. Been to other places in varadero and entertainment knocked this place out of the park. But over all a great place for the money, very clean and pretty grounds. :)

Melia Las Antillas: great mother daughter vacation
We just got home a couple of days ago. Had a wonderful time. Our check in was very quick. The front desk staff were very helpful when we asked questions. The staff were friendly. We had an oceanview room which we loved. The resort is clean. We did find it does need some repairs but that did not bother us after all it takes time and money. We went to the beach and it was nice yellow flag every day though but did not stop us. The pool area is nice plenty of chairs we just found the entertainment[... read more] could be improved.
The walk way to the beach is nice with a little bar and bbq there where you can sit and get a drink and a sandwich. The grounds are nice. The thing we liked was everything was central. Not much of a walk to get to the restraunts or beach. We sat at the lobby bar at night and enjoyed the music. There was lots of food so anyone who says they were hungry is just too picky. We love Cuba and I have been there 11-12 times and would keep going. The resort has friendly staff and is clean and I would not hesitate to recommend someone going there. I feel your holiday is what you make it and if you don't like it don't go back. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and have nothing bad to say. I'll probably go back as I loved the grounds and staff.
