1. Room smelt like feces. Like it was so disgusting they didn’t even want to switch our rooms until we made them come smell it themselves.
2. One bed when we asked for 2
3. No food after hours. They advertise 24/7 room service. This is a lie they will not answer your calls.
4. Alejandro is the most rude front desk staff of all time. If you see him just immediately ask for someone else unless you want to be disrespected and treated like shit. Guy clearly hates his job and his life.
5. On[... read more]e girl had her own room and she got electrocuted. They didn’t care. They didn’t even at the least apologize.
6. There’s a minimum number of cabanas at the pool but the pool boys that work there put books or shoes on the beds to claim it and the guest have to bribe them with $20 USD to get a bed. Which is free they’re just assholes and money hungry. We caught on to their game and they didn’t like that.
7. Shower knob fell off
8. Wall is leaking
9. Bathroom is moldy in one of our 3 room
10. Staff came into our room while we’re half naked with the do not disturb sign on. Didn’t apologize. Not sure why they’re coming in when it shows we’re sleeping
11. Staff came into one room and took the towels off the rack and threw them on the floor… again do not disturb was on
12. Refuse to answer our calls
13. Bar tenders were super rude
14. They only help locals
15. 24 hour food service and 0 food service
16. Never give us water when we ask. Every 2 days we got some water if lucky
17. Power went out in one room
18. Expired mango juice from March….
19. Air conditioning wasn’t properly working and was also leaking
20. Came home and all my stuff was moist from the air in the room

Grand Sunset Princess: Amazing
The beach was great no problem finding beach chairs at all. The pool area was also good but not enough chairs in the shade so we didn’t really use that area. Really great nighttime entertainment, and lots of things to do. Food was mediocre though the Italian restaurant was good, but the service in the Thai restaurant was terrible Could just have been the people working there the night we went though. Sandos Playacar Beach Resort: Great Resort
It started out not great because our room was not ready until 4.00pm (check-in was supposed to be at 3.00pm). The first room shown to us was on the main floor which we didn't want. In the 2nd room the WIFI didn't work. In the 3rd room where we finally stayed, the fridge wasn't working at all. Later, we found fruit flies in the room; the hair dryer didn't work at all, and the water pressure in the shower was very low. When all this was brought to the attention of Customer Service, they were quick[... read more]ly taken care of to our satisfaction. They compensated us (through the curtesy of the Chief Concierge, Luis Enrique) with 2 special dinners and a Spa Massage and Hydro Therapy. At the restaurants, even the resort restaurant manager (Humberto), assistant manager (Javier) always came up to greet us very warmly.

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort: Perfect for families with young children
We recently stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort, we had a great vacation - 5 nights with our kids 3.5 and 1.5 years of age. The check in process was quite slow but I had read that prior to going so was prepared. The rooms were average resort rooms - nothing fancy but met all of our needs. We had booked a ground floor room due to bringing a stroller but found out there were elevators so could have stayed higher if we wanted to. The food was average resort food, lots of options and flavours. O[... read more]ur kids loved the soft serve ice cream machines that were located in the buffet as well as the lunch snack bars at each resort. The kids pools located at the Maya beach and the Caribe were perfect for our little ones, allowed us to sit on the edge of the pool and be within reach when needed but we were also able to relax. Drinks were delicious, although if the bar was busy it was sometimes difficult to get service - but they’re trying their best. Only cons which weren’t really even “cons†but the main buffet didn’t open for dinner until 6:30pm so our kids snacked in the room before dinner and the nightly entertainment didn’t start until 9:30 which we missed due to wanting to keep our kids on a normal sleep routine. There wasn’t a kids show prior at an earlier time which would have been nice. Overall we loved the resort and would return in a heartbeat!

Barcelo Maya Colonial: A super fun time!
A really clean and beautiful resort! Beaches were nice, pools were fun, and service was friendly and always willing to help. Food was actually pretty good too! There’s tons to do here, AND it’s literally walking distance to two famous and beautiful cenotes. Right between Tulum and Playa, there’s a lot of opportunities for fun excursions too. It was a wonderful trip—especially for the price!

Iberostar Waves Paraiso Beach: Terrible Customer Service
Pros and cons to everything, but I was shocked by how terrible the front end service was. Experienced issues the first week and can’t believe they’re still in business with how things are handled there. The grounds are beautiful, it’s so fun having the animals around, the beach is gorgeous (I would suggest staying away from the rocky parts which you can see clearly), the food had a great selection, the cleaning and food staff were always great - essentially if you experience zero issues, y[... read more]ou’ll be fine, but if you have any issues, basically keep them to yourself or you’ll be frustrated beyond belief and waste way too much time. My first night after a full day and night of travel we arrive, and there was confusion because there’s 5 hotels on this one resort - all the perks we were looking forward to that we saw weren’t actually included with where we booked which was a huge let down. We had the option to upgrade but it was really expensive, so we let it go and it just was what it was - definitely very misleading and kind of shady, but we didn’t let it bug us. First night, I had the most terrible sleep and MAYBE got 4 hours cut up because of this drunk group of guys trying to bash into the neighbouring room. I called security - eventually the bulk left, and the AC turned on which is quite loud so the remaining sound was drowned out. I was woken up again by a drunk person continuously knocking and tapping on the door trying to get in again - called security again. Managed to get back to sleep, but woke up again to drunks trying to get into the door, called security for a third time.. and after this phone call they then started fidgeting with my door handle trying to force their way in. I was literally appalled that I had to call security three times in a night, and they claim someone came each time, but to call not once, not twice, but three times? I can honestly say I already didn’t feel safe after night one of 13. Went to the lobby the following day to see what the heck happened, and time and time again no matter who I talked to, everyone just justified what happened as though it was normal and there was no issue and I’m essentially overreacting. Being a family friendly resort with a baby and having a group of drunk men trying to force their way into rooms in the middle of the night repeatedly? Nothing was offered, no apologies were made, it was this constant flow of the systems they have in place and how everything is handled and there was no problem. We were then told by our hands on travel guide at the resort that the front desk/concierge workers are known to be more of sales people and less people people, which makes sense because of how much you’re up sold. Following this shocking display of a clear lack of customer service, we went to their sales presentation as you got some perks for going, so why not? It’s actually an ingenious program that would have been considered, but no longer was when the first manager came to us prior to it starting and asked how the stay has been so far, and we told him the truth of what happened the first night. Response? Didn’t acknowledge it at all, clarified that we knew this was a sales presentation, signed off, and passed us along. Who in their right mind hears of someone having a terrible experience their first night, completely ignores it, then continues to try and sell you more time spent at this resort? It was appalling the demeanour in how they talked to us and looked down on us - just like we were money for the taking. Didn’t care at all about us. This was now an experience we brought to the front desk to bring attention to how off putting this resorts dynamic was - but there was more justification, no one really cared, and we were actually sickened by how some treated us. Eventually we clawed our way to the front end supervisors and managers who could finally help us, but it’s very clear that this resort runs on a very top down, hierarchical model where people are paid poorly and are not happy, which actually made me really sad. Again, the food staff was incredible always, the cleaners were sweet as can be, and you’ll get good and bad everywhere you go, but for the Human Resources and front end to be that bad, I honestly don’t know how they’re still afloat. This was only the beginning of our problems but I won’t write them all here as the issues all came back down to the same thing - lack of leadership and knowledge of dealing with people. Even very small things that weren’t a big deal but we wanted to get sorted out became huge confusing issues that were impossible to get to the bottom of.. we spent way too much time in the lobby dealing with things on our vacation. Very disorganized, inefficient systems - we chatted with a lot of other people staying there who were as confused as we were when we arrived, as most things aren’t explained, the map barely makes sense, and you’re kind of just left to your own devices. Multiple families we met on their way out after a week stay said they had just learned of helpful things like the shopping centre, the Iberostar app, the times of buffets and a La cartes, etc. I’m not sure if covid made resorts worse, but prior vacations I’ve never experienced anything like this. We’re business owners so that’s where our perspective on this is all coming from - if our business ran this way and we treated our customers as we were treated, we wouldn’t be in business today.

Barcelo Maya Palace: Terrific
The grounds were meticulous and well lit at night. Loved the covered walkways, fountains, and decor. The pool areas were well designed and had plenty of lounge chairs for everyone in our group. Very much appreciated the shade coverings, hammocks, and quality beach towels.
The food was great, with the exception of the seafood restaurant that required reservations, which was mediocre, including the desserts. Most of us didn't finish our meals.
The accommodations were spacious and had a[... read more]ll the amenities needed.
The Air Canada shuttle bus ride from the airport to the hotel was disappointing. Once onboard, the guide informed us that they would be making several stops at different hotels, and it would be a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes to arrive at Bahia Principe (the last resort on the trip). The toilet on the bus did not flush, so there was a urine smell.
(Note: the return shuttle bus from BP to the airport was better as it was direct but still took 2 hours. It was a van, so no toilet and therefor[... read more]e no urine smell.)
During the week, it was hard to find the Air Canada rep (Carlos) at the resort. Resort staff always reported seeing him "somewhere" on site. He was supposed to be in his office 9:30 am - 2 pm but was never there. I overheard other guests say they had been looking for him for 2-3 days. On our 3rd day, the resort staff tracked him down for us and told him to come meet with us in the lobby. When he arrived, he told us he doesn't do an orientation, and that Guest Services could answer all our questions. I asked how to know the time the return bus was leaving for the airport on May 30 and he said it was 6:10 am. I told him we weren't flying out until 6:00 pm, but he said that he was sure that the bus was leaving the resort at 6:10 am, as it takes a long time to get to the airport with the road construction, etc. I later learned there is a binder that lists all the airlines departure flights and the associated shuttle bus departure times from the resort. It showed our bus was departing at 12:20 pm. So, this particular AC rep really wasn't helpful at all.
Upon arrival at BP Tulum, the check-in process for every person in the line up seemed to take a long time. At 3:15 pm the room was still not ready, so staff said to go to the buffet. At 3:45 pm a trolley drove us and our baggage to the room, where the housecleaning staff were still inside finishing up.
Throughout the week there was a outside sewage smell that seemed particularly strong near the villas in section 33. It didn't smell inside the room with everything closed, but I didn't want to sit outside because of it.
The resort is very clean, and the entire grounds are meticulously groomed. Every one of the staff work very hard to ensure that their guests have anything they want, and are having a good time.
The all-inclusive wrist band also acts as the door key, so you do not need to worry about losing the key, and it tracks the time and each person that has entered the room. There is also an in-room safe that you program with your own digital code.
The room was spacious and nice with an in-room mini-fridge that was replenished every day with beer, soft drinks and bottled water.
I found the beach to be disappointing (narrow in spots, rocks, clumps of seaweed), so not very good to walk along. Therefore, I spent most of my time at the pool area.
Yukutan Buffet - Although somewhat repetitive each day, there was a good variety of food, and there were several stations to watch your specific food order cooked in front of you. (I did not eat at the other restaurants, so cannot comment).
The waiters at the dining area of the Yukutan buffet were great, and they gave the guests 5-star service.
However, as the Yukutan buffet was open to the outside, it was quite humid and sometimes uncomfortable to sit in the dining area. There were birds flying throughout the buffet restaurant and landing on chairs and tables. The staff were kept busy cleaning up bird poop off the tables. If someone left their table to go back to the buffet's food prep area, the birds would instantly be on their plate scavenging the leftovers.
In addition, there were a lot of coatis that were not afraid of humans, and they would get uncomfortably close. One even came into the dining area of the Yukutan buffet restaurant and put its paw on a patron who was sitting at the table! Eeek!
In general, I would recommend this resort as it was relaxing, clean, and provided good value. The downfalls are the lengthy time it takes to get between the airport and the resort, the slow check-in and room access, and disappointing condition of the beach.

Crown Paradise Club: Great budget/kid friendly resort
Overall I would give this resort a 3.5/5.
Pros: friendly staff, great beach, could always find chairs by the bigger pools and beach, spacious rooms, all pools were good size for kids, food wasn’t 5 stars but you could usually find something you like!
Cons: small and uncomfortable beds, bar hours/supplies (kept running out of light beer and champagne, smell in bathroom was atrocious, not enough seating around the kids pool, seemed short staffed especially at the bars, and I don’t unde[... read more]rstand the need for an adults only pool on such a kid friendly resort when the adults only resort is right next door, use the space for something else lol

Hilton Vallarta Riviera Resort: Stars were missing
We stayed at the Hilton in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We expected our stay at this hotel to be much like the Hiltons we have stayed at before, but it was not. We had booked a King suite with a desk but ended up adding on $800 to get upgraded to the room with a table much like a desk 🤷ðŸ¼â€â™€ï¸ and a hot tub on the patio. We had to move rooms only to figure out that the all rooms have this problem. Once shut they appear to be shut but they aren’t you must slam the door for it to lock. Kinda crazy if you expect 4 plus stars with issues like this??? The hotel was much older than it appears to be in pictures as well. We asked for them to come by and fix the leaking mini bar fridge but that never happened 🤷ðŸ¼â€â™€ï¸ the pools weren’t clean and both of us really felt they were needing some real 🧼 cleaning!!! Don’t expect much from this hotel because expect for a few staff this place was a maybe 3 star experience.

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal: Momo
The hotel rooms are old and need of repair. They are doing renovations. Our room was ocean front and damp and musty smelling. We transferred to the newer building at 56 dollars a day more. They are doing their best with what they have. The cleaning staff went on strike as well so other staff had to fill in.
