This resort was in the middle of nowhere, yet facing the beach, a few feet away.. I could hear the waves at night, very calming! There are afew resorts close by,that were easy to get to by bus. We had fun checking out 2 sister hotels where we could eat for free also.
I must say our hotel was the best hotel out of the two (one being TRYP) i wouldn't suggest that unless you're 21 and looking for a party and don't care where you sleep or eat.It was a rundown place.
Sol Cayo was clean with go[... read more]od tasting food and great entertainment. The rooms were average. I didn't have any complaints. I got my clean room and daily towels, hot water in the morning (not always so for a night shower)
I met the most amazing people from everywhere in Canada. Lots of families and singles too! Great kids club for families.
I loved the Massage by the pool area which was very nice btw..
Drinks by the bar were amazing as was the Spanish coffee. The reg coffee was not as good.
The store on the resort ripped us off, every time we bought cigarettes (social smoker) They charged double.. So be careful with the prices! There is a post however it's high up and not noticeable. I spoke to customer service about it and she said they would refund me at the store however the lady there refused so management wanted me to file a complaint and I chose do do nothing.(altho other people, at least ten told me they had got ripped off also paid 2.90 and 4.00 as opposed to 1.30 per pack for Hollywood smokes.. At the end of the day (it was only a couple of dollars more per pack) I guess they needed the extra money more then I did.
The only other complaint I had and it was a big deal at first because I chose this hotel because it had a water park. The pictures confirmed this . Yet when we arrived there was no splash park..my god daughter was not too pleased until the 2nd day when she jumped in the pool and I met all the wonderful people there who helped make our vacation memorable in a nice way!.
Would I go back again? Well I'm an explorer and like to check out new places however if I met the same people there next year, I would most definitely go back!

Melia Las Dunas: Great resort
We have returned to this resort after 4 years. The only con was that the beach on the adult side had eroded away. The family side had a good beach but not enough shade available. People up at 530 for coveted spots.
The Pros
The food was great. Kept warm. Good variety. Salads and dressings kept on ice. Many choices on the buffet, only ate at the a la carts once. Best food so far as compared to the past 7 years of going to Cuba.

Paradisus Varadero: Great resort
We really enjoyed our time there except for a few unfortunate issues. The room, the staff, and all the pools were outstanding. The food , however is not why you go to Cuba. We took day trips to Varadero in their double decker buses for $5.00 all day and to Havana on a guided tour. On our way home the airline lost my travel companion luggage between Cuba and Toronto. I always bring my own milk and tea and mug. They lost my milk and broke my mug, but such is life. I cannot wait to go back. [... read more] The people are really warm genuine folk. There was no good fishing around the resort either.

We have travelled to Cuba many times. Melia Cayo Coco is the best resort we have visited so far. The resort is spacious, clean and quiet. The grounds and gardens are very well maintained. Staff are friendly and professional, always making sure your needs are met and that you are enjoying your vacation. Wonderful night time entertainment. Something for everyone. Beautiful beach. Melia Las Dunas: Tired and very average resort
The grounds are extremely large and cart rides by hotel are scarce even though they say frequent. The rooms aren't well cleaned and the entire facility is very tired and in need of upgrades.
Due to the immense size, the buffet line ups are rediculous. The food was below average but I understand that's not unusual for Cuba. Service all around was quite poor. If your on the beach or by the pool, be prepared to walk far for a drink or food. There aren't any take out containers and drinks are serv[... read more]ed in small 6ounce plastic cups.

Melia Marina Varadero: Great Memories
The main lobby is beautiful. The room was alright, it could've been cleaner. The food looked great but for vegetarian guests it isn't the most inviting. The staff was absolutely fantastic and made our trip much more exciting. If you are looking for a relaxing, super quiet vacation this is definitely the resort for you!
I was in the appartements and found it very well. The rooms were very clean, the staff was excellent. The service in cuba is everywhere very relaxed!!!! The entertainement was awesome.....very nice place and has everything you need to shop if you wish not to go out of the complex.
What I would recommend though would be something to wash the dishes with, and another pot to cook with!!!
The phone service is horrible though...you cannot get any calls comming in, but can call out!!!

Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Wonderful Hotel, Amazing Service!
We stayed at this hotel from Mar.24-31/2017. We were a group of 10 (45-65 age range) that have been going to Cuba together since 2011 (so have stayed at many different resort areas and hotels), and all of us left saying that this resort was one of the best we have had the opportunity to stay in. This hotel suited our group needs and wants, and we all felt we got a lot for our money.
I will write this review from my opinion (not the groups, but most felt the same as I did). When I say “weâ€[... read more], I’m referring to my wife and I.
To start – the airport to hotel trip is long – about 2 hours. Not bad going because you’re excited and anxious to see the resort, and you can get beer on the bus for the trip. Leaving is another story. Be prepared for this. It’s not the hotels fault, so get over it.
When walking in to the hotel, we immediately headed for the lobby washroom. This was disgusting and not a very good first impression. The pipes were leaking on my head as I stood at the urinal, and the second urinal was broken. Now this being said – it is the only negative thing I have to say about the resort. From that point on, nothing but good.
Check-In was smooth and quick – we ended up in building 4 (all 10 in our group in the same building - which was a plus). Close to everything – this is not a big resort. The grounds are well maintained and fully mature We loved the flowers, and vegetation - beautiful. The rooms are lively colours and while dated, clean and well taken care of. Are there some things that need attention – you bet, but we have seen this in every hotel in Cuba. Not a big deal, and the little things like this don’t affect my opinion on the overall experience.
I have to mention here that I was on a Transat Tour vacation, and the rep at the hotel – Daniel Begin (I believe - or Veronique when we saw her at the bar at night) was excellent! She gave us great information and was always around to help if we needed anything at all. She was great.
What makes this hotel so special are the people. I can’t tell you how friendly and helpful everyone is, regardless of where or who you are talking to. You get to know the people serving you in the buffet, at the lobby bar and beach bar, the cooks – if you make the effort to engage with them!!!
Food:
WOW. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food in this hotel. The Buffet service was awesome. Thank you Yuneisy and Chichi for taking care of us, and pre-setting a table for 10 when you knew we were coming. So wonderful to get that kind of care. The buffet food was excellent. Did it change every day? No, but it’s a buffet, and no buffet changes everything every day. Certain food was rotated through, so it did change and the quality was always excellent. I had soup almost every day, and it was always great. The lamb was delicious!!! A big shout-out to Fredy (Mudo) on the fish station who went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied with his special dishes. He was spectacular. My wife loved the crepes she had for breakfast at the buffet. Always plenty of fresh fruit and yogurt. You could get eggs cooked for you (omelets, fried, scrambled). The ham was juicy and tender, and the chicken was always good.
We ate at two a-la-carte restaurants – Japanese and Italian. We found the Italian to be better that the Japanese. The Japanese is an entertaining meal as it is cooked at the table. The chef was funny and entertaining. Chicken was a bit dry, and the beef was tough. The Italian was really good. Surprised us.
Beach:
Again, WOW. Spectacular. This is the most beautiful beach we have seen in Cayo Santa Maria (and we’ve been here three times). Wide beach, plenty of chairs. Thank you Earnesto for taking such good care of us and setting us up each day. He always had seats set for us as a group and brought us little tables. The water in Cayo Santa Maria is so spectacular – the colours! Amazing.
The Beach bar staff is amazing! Our two friends JuanHavani and JuanGiovani (or something like that - I never did get that straight) were spectacular. Always friendly, always attentive. Whether serving behind the bar, or doing the beach delivery runs, they joked with us and were always pleasant. Thank you so much!!! There is also a fellow at the beach bar who cooks sandwiches (ham and cheese, chicken, etc.), so you can grab a quick meal from him. He’s great too, but unfortunately I didn’t get his name.
Beach Restaurant:
There is a restaurant down near the beach, only open at lunch time (11:00-5:00). Here they do Barbeque foods (chicken, pork, kebobs, etc). The Cuban people certainly know how to barbeque, and the food here was always tasty.
Pool:
We are beach people and only occasionally go to the pool. We managed two trips to the pool. There are two pools side by side. One has a pool bar, the other doesn’t. Both are nice. The area surrounding the pools is pretty (vegetation, trees, flowers). The pool snack bar is open 24 hours. It serves a good omelet for breakfast. The pizza here is good, and so are the burgers.
Lobby Bar:
A great place for coffee in the morning, drinks in the afternoon and evening. Entertainment is provided nightly – some nights better than others. One night (Thursday) they had a band playing older rock music and a lot of dancing was going on. We loved it, and I’m assuming everyone else did as well, due to the number of people dancing. The hotel should do more of this type of entertainment. I don’t remember the server’s names here, but there were a few that got to know us, and treated us well. A big thank you to all of them as well.
Excursions:
We did two: Speedboats/Snorkeling and Santa Clara/Remedios.
The Speedboats/Snorkeling was great. Well worth the money. Do yourself a favour, and do this one. You won’t regret it.
The Santa Clara/Remidios trip gets you out amongst the Cuban towns and people. Well worth the visit. The church in Remidios is spectacular (built in 1551). It’s a pretty little town as well. This was a long trip, so not sure I liked all of it.
Overall, we felt that this hotel is one of the best we have ever stayed at in Cuba. We were worried before leaving because of the reviews we read here on Trip Advisor, but we saw none of the things others were complaining about. The water problem has been fixed, always had hot water, the food (in our opinion) is excellent, no problem with towels, rooms was well maintained and cleaned, and the staff are so amazing it makes up for anything that was missing or wrong.

Tryp Cayo Coco: Wish I would of listened to the Reviews
To start: we requested ground floor room, we were on the second floor. We entered our room to a strong odor of sewage....strong enough to make us gag. When we went to turn on the light, sparks came from behind the wall bracket. Seeing it was 10:30 pm and we were extremely tired from travelling, we closed the bathroom door and pulled the plug from the wall swearing to deal with this in the morning with management and the air Transat rep. The next morning we spoke to the rep and we were moved t[... read more]o another room, which was not ready until 4:30 pm. A full day to find another room. We proceeded to explore the resort, only to find several stagnet ponds, with green water and a foul smell coming from them, again the smell of sewage. I understand the hotel is one of the originals, and they are starting to fix the rooms, but this was ridiculous. The rooms were old, the accessories were all labeled with names of other hotels, who had given them away because that hotel was updating their rooms. Walls needed paint, bathroom had no safety strips on floor of tub, shower head was connected by a rubber hose. Entire resort in dire need of good plumbing, feces floating in toilets, in the public used toilets and the individual rooms. Meals: breakfast was good, but no fresh juice ( tang for orange juice), Dinner was fair, need better selection and better choices for salads and dressings. Only serve coffee in the morning, NO coffee with lunch or Dinner??????. Specialty restaurants were exceptional. Drinks were poor, other than at the Italian restaurant, he had a blender to make a proper Pina Colada or any of the slushy type drinks, the other bars did not have the proper equipment to crush ice, Main bar in the lobby very slow, spend more time making expresso coffee then drinks...can wait up to 20 minutes. Better arrangements need to be made for quests who don't fly out until late at night, either change flight times to a more acceptable time, or make arrangements for a later check out. I am very shocked that Air Transat would even consider this hotel for their quests, it is definitely below the standards that we have always relied upon. Hope something is done so other quests aren't as shocked as we were. Bartenders, room maids and servers were fantastic. BEACH was excellent. Pool could use more than one walk in ( Steps) to enter the pool, otherwise we'll kept. Bridges need boards nailed down before someone trips on lose boards or falls through. Curtains need hooks so they are not sagging off the rod. Very disappointed. Air transat, trip central should be ashamed for allowing people to even consider this place. We rely on you to provide us with quality travel and accommodations.

Melia Las Dunas: Just a great place from the start
We can't wait to return again. Buffet had great choices, meat, saladas, veggies, etc. The servers and cooks were all very friendly and I didn't mind tipping them every chance we had. Beach was beautiful and the ocean warm. It was hard to get a seat at the pools, but I'm really not a pool person. The al-a-carte selection (4) restaurants because we were there (10) days was very good, lobster was $10 extra but well worth it. The guys at the sailboat rides were great! Hotel shows it's age but they do their best to keep it clean. Staff is wonderful. Our TV and A/C didn't work, mentioned it to front desk and our TV was replaced unfortunately the A/C wasn't fixed. My biggest issue was the amount of flies in the buffet. As well as septic smells throughout the resort.

Hotel Camino del Mar: Great Resort
The hotel itself is in need of cosmetic repair - not a big deal in the big picture - but it is obvious. Our room was very nice. More than acceptable. The toilets in the entire resort have a hard time flushing, but I believe this is a Cuba wide problem. The food, by Cuba standards, was very good - there was always something you could eat. The staff were fabulous - but obviously overworked - there were not enough staff to serve each area. They ran out of beer and wine on the second to last n[... read more]ight we were there.... totally unacceptable for an all-inclusive resort - I have never had that happen in any other resort I have stayed at in the Caribbean or Mexico.
Our biggest complaint, and the one that will keep me ( and the other 10 people I met on the week I was there) from returning again is that there is not enough shade provided on the beach in the form of straw umbrellas and/or pillappas. For a resort of that size there should have triple the number (as there were at the 2 resorts on either side of the Melia,) We would go down to the beach at 7:30 a.m. and all the pillappas and umbrellas would be taken already (with towels or personal effects on the chairs). Also, there were not enough chairs on the beach. If you didn't go down really early in the morning, you would not even get a chair, never mind the option of shade.
