This was our 2nd trip to Cuba, the resort is huge with many different bars/restaurants. The staff are all very friendly and the a la cart food is fantastic. The buffets offer a wide array of choices. Would deffinately go back in a heartbeat.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Hotel good, Ahola Sun sucks!!!!
Hotel was clean, staff friendly, food was good, we were there for a wedding but were bumped at the last minute, we stayed in a room for 2 days with my niece & nephew so we could be with our family and attend the wedding. Ahola Sun gave us the worst service ever, everyone blaming everyone else for the mix-up, no one willing to take responsibility !!!!

Don Lino Hotel: Great place!
This was a great place. Small, friendly, relaxing, clean. Not really a party place for the younger crowd, but perfect for middle age persons. Grab a taxi at the front gate for any tours that you may want to go on.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: A good deal on economy pricing
Overall, for a 3 star Cuban hotel, I find it great, large and accommodating. Since it is only a 3 star, of course it's not top rate, but for those who only want to vacation economy class, it has pretty much all to offer for a reasonable price. I have gone back there four times in 5 years now.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Amazing resort
Everything was great, it was just confusing at the beginning to find your room. The orientation and layout is a bit confusing, especially since no print out maps are available to you. This would be beneficial for others.

Sol Turquesa Beach: Riu Playa Turquesa - decent value, don't overlook!
My family and I went March 18-25. The place is beautiful, kept clean inside and out. Many pools and the beach is also gorgeous. They clean it every morning so no worries for seaweed/garbage. The grounds and pool were always being kept up daily as well. The rooms were done well too. No complaints on cleanliness. I've seen some bad reviews but it was good for us and we had 2 rooms in the 500 section on the 2nd level. This is a very large resort with many steps as others wrote but you do NOT need t[... read more]o use the stairs, you can call for the resort shuttle (golf carts) which will bring you to the main lobby where the restaurants aren't too far. The entertainment is also close to the main lobby and was very good. The entertainment staff are all very fun and outgoing. Actually almost all the staff are great. They are hard workers and really nice people. Everyone should take time to get to know the staff. 2 of the best waitresses we found were Neydis and Dunia. The female cook was also awesome. For the entertainment staff Livan and Orlando were very nice and took the time to get to know people. The food was ok but for me not so great. I think they could use a few more cooks. In the morning we were cooking our own bacon because the line-up for fresh cooked eggs/omelettes was large and this is no reflection to the cook who was doing her best and kept a smile! A few times at dinner the meat (pork) wasn't cooked through and the beef is very tough. Bring your own condiments, syrup as if you like syrup on pancakes as they have none. Keep an open mind on the food and you will have a great experience and remember this is a poorer country. The staff can greatly use tips and are very appreciative.
Enjoy!

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Too quiet
First time to an adults only and will probably be our last as average age is low to mid 70s. Very few activities during the day and not well advertised tried rifle shooting one day the rifle was held together with duct tape. It was crowded and had to be up early to get a place at the pool and there was a bad smell at the beach so didn't go in the ocean.
The room was clean but could be refreshed a little bit of paint would be nice, the bar was stocked everyday but we do leave a couple of Pecos in[... read more] the fridge.
The a la carte's were all good but the buffet needs lots more staff, one dinner time we were half way through our meal when we finally got a drink. The wait staff are not too friendly but I think they are overwhelmed and it also doesn't open very early. The staff at the pool snack bar however are also very busy but very friendly and a lot of fun.
We didn't see any of the animation team until the day before we left up until then we though they didn't have any. The night time entertainment was good especially the water show.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: always a great time
i have been to this hotel 5 times. Once with my 75 year old mother and once with my 5 year old grandson. The children centre is great. Sunay is amazing with the children. I find the staff always smiling and in general willing to help make my vacation enjoyable. The gardeners would get fresh coconut for us daily, the entertainment staff make the activities fun and entertaining. Food is great for Cuba, remember not alot of spices and is buffet so can be limited to what you can put out, but always [... read more]tasty. They have stations you can get fresh grilled food and at breakfeast omelets made to your request. We always stay in the old section, although dated it is closest to everything and the pool is best for younger children as not as deep. It is always clean. Watershoes for ocean is recommended. The coral at the beach does make it a little rocky, but allows for great snorkeling or just seeing the fish swim around (take some bananas from buffet)

Playa Pesquero: Paradise
When we walked into the lobby bar we were quite taken back at the beauty and friendliness of the staff only to continue to be in complete awe over the paradise that awaited us when we were on our way to our room. This was our first time to an island and we felt that we had arrived into paradise. The pool, the gardens, walkways and lights were just a few of what took our breath away. Never being away from home, we found ourselves feeling like we had landed in paradise. We then located our room wi[... read more]th the friendly help of the staff who shuttled us from the lobby bar to our room. Our room was located near the pool and lobby bar. It was a fantastic location and when we walked in we were pleased to see that the room was beautiful and clean with everything we needed. The room was equipped with two large beds, fridge, separate
bathroom and a balcony overlooking the pool. The food was excellent and I did not have any problem finding fresh and tasty items everyday that we were there. The food displays were incredible. We have had other trips since this one, but we often talk of this being the nicest resort we have been too.

Brisas Covarrubias: Great place to relax!!
This was about our 7th trip to Cuba and our first to this resort. The place was newish (15 yrsold) and fresh looking. We had a room that was as close to the beach as could be and about half way along their ocean front. Fairly central to everything.
The beach was super long and we walked way beyond either end on separate days. Sturdy shoes helped once we got past the sand section and had to walk on various surfaces (rocks, rock/sand mix, old coral reefs ...). These old reefs can be dangerous if y[... read more]ou fell as they sharp edged. Be careful! We saw more sponges than we have ever seen and thought about taking some home but could not figure out how to get the sand out, maybe little critters too.
There are vendors on the west end of the beach but we did not see them until the end of our stay. There were also some guys looking for gifts at the east end of the beach on various days. We did not have stuff for them but we saw some people giving baby clothes. There was not as much of this as we have seen at other resorts which is probably due to its remoteness.
This remoteness also means that there is nothing nearby to walk to and the excursion to a town (Puerto Padre) is a 2 hour drive. Really, if you enjoy going for a walk to like a nearby village, this is not the place you will be able to do this. At all! As we have been on some of these excursions on other trips we opted to stay on resort this time and just absorb the sun. We did walk out of the front of the resort and walked to the end of the road to another section of the beach but it was an hour's walk one way. There we found spots where people come to camp. There was one semi-permanent structure with Cubans staying there
There were some vendors on resort in the area of the lobby and they had some nicer and different stuff than other areas of Cuba. The store was well stocked but did not have finer cigars nor matches/lighters. I went the whole week bumming lights off people. All in good fun.
I fished along the shore most days and had some luck. I caught a few barracudas and various other sharp toothed fish that I could not identify. There were 4-5 guys shore fishing. There is also fishing to do from the paddle boat either on your own our with one of the beach staff and these trips seem to be a lot more successful. I have not yet used bait but I think I will next trip. There is deep sea fishing but I did not do this.
The bugs were driving me crazy! The resort is kind of in a swampy area which did not help. Not many mossies but no-see-ums!! By day two I was actually considering whether I could just live in the room for the rest of the trip.
It is a great place to go to just relax. The beach was great and the staff was great also. We have been at other resorts where they treat you like you don't exist unless you are a repeat guest. Not here. Every staff member (well almost every) was friendly and helpful. They spoke to you freely, pleasantly and just wanted to do their jobs well. There also did not seem to be much need to speak Spanish which is a bit disappointing but oh well.
The beach was wide and long and we had no trouble getting chairs or a place to sit either under trees or palapas. The ocean swimming was fantastic! The water was mostly warm and when the tide went out in the late afternoon you could walk out to a sand bar about 100 feet out and sit in about 5 inches of water and let the waves wash over you (or push you around on windier days). It was a great spot to enjoy a sip of rum and smoke a Guantanamera.
The food was average for Cuba. There was lots of it and a decent variety. There was tons of salad type things and veggies. Lots of meat chicken, pork, beef chunks, rabbit. The restaurant had the usual grill for hamburgesas, fish, chicken for lunch and supper and then for eggs in the morning. They served conch snail on the last day which I wanted to try but you know... it was the last day. Not a time for me to try new foods.
There is a beach bar/grill where you can get hamburgesas, pizza, fish, fries and think we had chicken once. It was a great place to sit, eat, enjoy a beer and sit near the ocean. We ate there every day.
Beer was always cold but the rum was the cheaper Santero(?) brand. Funny after taste.
There was spa treatments. Try the mud therapy. Hehe,
I would go back for the staff, beach, fishing and relaxation. I would have to find a solution to the bugs though.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: The best resort and vacation we've had in Cuba!
Upgraded to Royal Service and were overwhelmed by unlimited 'Royal ServiceS'. The unlimited champagne is a very nice VIP ! The butler service brought our breakfasts, all special orders, for us to luxuriate on our Bungalo's veranda. The open air Rain Shower in our back private patio was super refreshing and the jacuzzi tub was Nancy's wake up delight. We loved dipping in the spa's private seawater pool and service at the private Royal Service beach was attentive, swift and unobtrusively caring!

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Good place with options.
We stayed in the old section of this resort in early January 2014. Our room was clean and functional and was close to everything. The service was excellent, staff were hardworking and helpful. The evening entertainment was enjoyable. Buffet had a wide variety of food with a good selection of cheeses, cold cuts, seafood and hot dishes. The beach is very nice with enough shade and sunbeds.
Overall, we had a relaxing an enjoyable week in Blau Costa Verde.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Amazing Week in Paradise!
From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. The staff was very friendly and greeted us with a welcome glass of champagne. The resort grounds were beautiful and our room was very clean and in a very good location (building #36) about half way in between the lobby and the pool (but a little closer to the pool and beach area). Our maid Yolangis was lovely, very friendly and greeted us with a smile each morning. She took good care of us by ensuring our room was clean and well stocked each day. It [... read more]was nice to have beach towels in the room upon arrival. The pool was very nice, clean, with lovely views of the ocean, although it could use a little paint refresh. No problem ever getting a lounge chair in either the sun or shade. The bartenders were great and took good care of us at the swim up bar. The beach was also amazing - clean with beautiful white sand beach. Everyday staff helped us procure loungers under an umbrella and we spent hours in the crystal clear, warm water swimming, looking at all the colourful fish and occasionally feeding them bread. Lots of coral, so great for snorkeling, but also lots of sandy areas for swimming. The food was also very good. The first day we arrived at noon and they were having a pig roast on the beach, which was amazing. We loved the a la cartes - the food and service was very good and we also had no trouble and enjoyed the service and food at the buffet as well. Lots of variety and the wait staff was very friendly. The nightly entertainment was also very well done. The young entertainers worked so hard and were very talented. We enjoyed a couple of water ballet events which were amazing and one night there was a circus, which was very entertaining. We also went to the YHI Spa and enjoyed a very relaxing couples massage by the ocean, which was amazing. The staff took very good care of us and pampered us with drinks and a lunch by the ocean on the deck. Our Sunwing Rep Madeline was also wonderful, answered all of our questions, and helped us connect with our daughter who was on vacation in Holguin at a resort about five minutes away. On a daily basis we would run into Carlos, who seemed to be a customer service manager, and he would greet us warmly and ask us if we were enjoying ourselves and if we needed anything. The extra special touches we received at Paradisus Rio de Oro really made this a special vacation to remember and I would definitely recommend it and go back again. However, I would like to try the Royal Service next time as I heard so many good things about it and perhaps go for nine days in order to really feel relaxed. Thank you Paradisus Rio de Oro for an amazing vacation!
