A Great Resort

Visited Blau for the 17th time on November 10th. Always feels like home and great to see returning guests, friends and staff. This resort has great staff and some of the best food I have had in Cuba. I would rate Blau as a 3 Star in the older section because it has some serious maintenance issues. My major complaint was availability of food and very poor air conditioning. The Blau Plus is a 4 Star. They also moved the 24 hr snack bar to the beach during the day. So if you are hungry, it is raini [... read more]ng heavily or have a walking handicap; the only food available is when the buffet is open for meal hours. This will pose a major problem when they have a full house in the high season. It is not on my travel list for 2015. May return some day if there are some changes or it goes for 3 star price. I would still recommend the resort if you get a sale price, go knowing what to expect or pay up and stay in Blau Plus if air con is important to you.

I was expecting a nice place and good food. There was a great beach, but a ugly cuisine. Now I don't want to go again. The airport was horrible.... People was friendly and helpful. The beach was the best.

Great beach resort

We are two couples who just returned from a week at the Blau and it was a great holiday! We really enjoyed snorkeling off the beach last year when we stayed next door at the Playa Costa Verde but did not like the entertainment there (can't stand these fashion shows every second night as well as the chamber music??). We decided to try the Blau as we were told the entertainment was much better there and we were not disappointed. The shows were very good. It would be nice to dance under the stars as we have very little chance to do that at home! We did not upgrade our rooms but they were fine, the maid service was excellent and the location was ideal as we like to be close to everything and the VIP buildings were far from the beach and buffet. One concern though was how dark the hallway was - we could hardly read our room no. in the evening - it could be a safety issue - most of the lights were turned off (to save money??). The lobby and public bathrooms do need renovations - they are in bad disrepair - broken door locks, missing toilet seats. The food at the buffet and the a la carte restaurants was tasty varied. On the weekend though - the line-ups at the buffet were long because of the local Cuban families visiting. It was also much noisier at the shows. It must be very crowded in the winter. We would not stay there in the busy season. All in all it was a great stay and good value for our money!

Worth only once

Good resort, we checked in PLUS section, which is way better than the regular. Rocky beach. Good place for snorkeling. Food was not that great for first couple of days and then quality improved may be because of British tourist. Staff was very cooperative. Pool was in great shape. Plus section is more quieter.

Beautiful Beach

We stayed at the Blau Costa Verde in August and the we loved it. The beach is beautiful, the staff is very helpful and happy. The food was good and the lots to choose from. This resort is good for R&R and that exactly what we needed. If you are looking for night life this is not the place to be. Paying the little extra for the upgrade was worth it - the nice pool, VIP bar and Miguel at the swim up bar made it all worth it.

Perfect for snorkeling !

We stayed for one week, wish had stayed for two ! The snorkeling was great the reef off to the right of the beach was alive and teaming with life. There is a dive centre just off to the right of the resort. We went diving twice, very reasonable rates. Be prepared if you go to dive, that there is a lot of lugging your tanks and gear back and forth to the boat, up and down a few ladders. There is a short walk to the beach but it was neat and clean as well... lots of sand, no trouble getting a chair with some shade, take water shoes as there are some rocks in the water. We liked this resort well enough to go back again! It is very well priced for what you get. Service was friendly and we had a wonderful time there. The airport is tiny and you will be on a bus for approximately one hour to the hotel.

Resort was very good!

We stayed at the Blau Verde Plus. The buildings were new. We paid a little more to avoid having problems with our rooms. Some had problems with their a/c or toilet in the regular Blau. The grounds are beautiful, the food is ok. A little isolate for my taste. Beach is beautiful.

Awesome Resort!

This was a fantastic resort, plus side upgrade is definitely worth it! Rooms were beautiful, great food selection! Very clean resort, staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent snorkeling from the beach!

Had a lovely stay!

Had a lovely stay at this hotel! The room was nice, the food ok, the staff polite and helpful. The beach was very nice. We especially enjoyed our get-away in the country with a guide, the price was more than reasonnable and the experience memorable.

From Ottawa to Blau second time

First time was good, second time amazing. I stayed 2 weeks with my son, and as we know more people this time we really enjoyed our vacation. Stuff is great, so friendly and helpful. Who do I want to mention? Food and beverages manager Isaiah, entertainment guys Léo, Juan Pina, Michael, boat people, cooks, bartenders… I highly recommend this resort, and I hope to come back.

A very great resort.

This was my 4th time at this resort, it was so nice to see that they upgraded the grounds. It was 10 years last time I was there, it was a nice quite place, not so much now. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that there was alot of children. I do perfer a quite place other than that it was wonderful.

This resort has the best beach!

My husband and I (in our early 30s) took a 6-day "babymoon" to Blau Costa Verde in March 2014 and we had a great time! This was our first time in the Holguin area (we've been to Varadero and Santa Clara before) and found that the water at the beach was totally calm by comparison, therefore more amenable to swimming. It was hot hot hot (35-40 everyday), so important to go to the beach early to get a spot in the shade. Lots of activities by the beach, including paddle boats, kayaks and catamarans  [... read more]that guests can use for free (but book early in the morning). And there are lots of fish at the hotel's part of the beach, so bring your snorkel stuff (or borrow it from the hotel) - you can also learn to scuba (which we didn't do). Snorkelling was our favourite part (we also went snorkelling on an excursion but saw the same fish at the hotel...so keep that in mind). We did not book the "plus" which gets you a room in the new part of the resort and more access to a la carte restaurants and another pool, but quickly upgraded after staying a night in the original part of the hotel. It was clean but needed upgrading, esp. the bathroom. It was also right near the pool bar which seemed to be open all night, so we wanted to be somewhere a little quieter. It was well worth it to upgrade, and easy to do at the front desk (only $100 more than what we had already paid). The newer part of the hotel was much nicer. Food was good too, for Cuba. Try the fish at the buffets - it's the best. Can't say much about the resort having a party atmosphere - I was 5 months pregnant, so we didn't really do that. But there were lots of Canadians (mostly French), so everyone's friendly. Great entertainment every night too - esp. the water ballet.

Good value for the money

Nice beach. Inviting pool, great staff, very clean rooms despite their age in the main building. My only criticism is the foid, but that's Cuba. And the place can get a bit loud if you want to go to bed early. If you book, ask for the newer pavillions.

February at Blau Costa Verde

I thought this was very good value for the money paid for this trip. I didn't expect so much choice for eating and was quite satisfied by the meals. the beach was beautiful as were the grounds. Our room was standard in the older section but quite acceptable and only complaint was noisy maids in the morning that woke us up twice.

Chase the blues away

An enjoyable experience. The entertainment in the evening was wonderful. Food was good. Maid service was good and helpful as was all staff. Rooms were a bit far from main lodge. Rooms were nicely decorated although had a small problem with ants.

Beautiful inviting resort

We found the staff to be very nice/friendly. Grounds were very well kept. Dining has a large selection of foods. Nice choice of restaurants on the resort. Facecloths and Kleenex should be added to the rooms.

We had a wonderful time!

Hotel & grounds were beautiful. We had upgraded our package for the plus section & loved the quiet time by the pool. It also allowed us to have five a la carts as well as a lobster supper - which was delicious! It was a mother/daughter get away - we did a day trip off resort. We couldn't wait to get back & lounge poolside. If you wanted a good spot on the beach with some shade you had to get there early - we chose pool most days. Weather was beautiful, staff was friendly. Very nice resort.

The new part had beautiful rooms.You have to pick trails into the beach because of coral.Food was your typical cuban resort and the staff were very nice once you get to know them.All and all it was a good vacation and I will go back.

Hotel good, Ahola Sun sucks!!!!

Hotel was clean, staff friendly, food was good, we were there for a wedding but were bumped at the last minute, we stayed in a room for 2 days with my niece & nephew so we could be with our family and attend the wedding. Ahola Sun gave us the worst service ever, everyone blaming everyone else for the mix-up, no one willing to take responsibility !!!!

Amazing resort

Everything was great, it was just confusing at the beginning to find your room. The orientation and layout is a bit confusing, especially since no print out maps are available to you. This would be beneficial for others.
