Wonderful result but disappointing ending
Our trip to the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal was for the most part very enjoyable. The resort is beautifully appointed and will kept. It is clean, lush and people were willing to help make your stay enjoyable. There are a variety of pool types with some being smaller and quieter which we enjoyed. The food was very good with variety and many a la carte choices. It was an added feature that we could go to the two sister resorts but no one else could come to ours, which kept it less crowded. The sh[... read more]opping is limited. The activities were plentiful enough, although I would have like some watercraft choices on the resort. There are a variety of excursions.
Unfortunately our trip was very negatively affected by a decision that the customer service manager made on the last full day of our stay. My husband had loosely agreed to attend a breakfast presentation offered by the “premier†guest service representative to learn about a new resort the same owner of the Bahia Principe Akumal is building in the Dominique. My husband explained that they could put us down but we would decide in the morning. The incentive was a gift for our daughter to swim with the dolphins at a reduced rate. We agreed they could call us at 7:50 am to confirm our participation. In the morning, we decided not to attend and had breakfast at the buffet. They saw us in the lobby that evening and asked if we would be coming tomorrow. My husband answered that we were going on excursions and would not. Despite this we received an unwanted wake up call from them at 7:50 asking if we were coming.
We received a call the following day as well. I was frustrated because this is my only time to sleep in – on vacation – and I do not want to be sold to aggressively on holiday. I reported this to the supervisor on duty. They had me fill out a comment form and were appreciative for the feedback, which I delivered professionally.
Later that day I was taking my daughter to the dolphin swim and decided to ask if we could receive a discount due to the fact that we had been woken up on two mornings of our vacation unnecessarily. They referred me to the customer service manager who had to investigate. A second manager I spoke with, when I followed up later that day again, suggested that perhaps I could have a discount at the lobby store because the dolphins were a separate company. I stated that would be fine but then did not hear back as promised. I followed up again and the first customer service manager told me that I would not be receiving any compensation because they had checked the phone records and I had not received any calls as described.
With pause, I explained that I could not comment on their records, but assured them that I did indeed receive the calls. He went on to tell me again that I had not received the calls. I asked him if he was implying I was lying which he confirmed again that I had not received the calls. As tourism professional in Nova Scotia with international tourism colleagues around the world, questioning my integrity was not under any circumstance the right thing to do to any guests. This is a sure way to loose the customer for life. On my last full day I was left with the resort not interested in compensating for inappropriate disturbances but more importantly being called a liar.
As a result we will not return to this resort and I will be contacting the owner to share my experience.

Worth checking it out. ..
Had a great week at the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal. The other parts of the resort (Tulum and Coba) were pretty crowded because of March Break, but we never had any problems finding chairs by the pools or tables in the restaurants. We ate in 5 a la carted and the food was always great. Would love to go back!

Gorgeous, clean, and friendly
Staff was helpful. Rooms were clean. Food was great. Shuttle was convenient. Nothing unexpected. Excursion options were great. Animals and climate was great. Although, akumal seems better suited towards couples. If you are single you should stay at tulum or closer to playa del Carmen.

Amazing Resort
Everything was beautiful around this resort. It is very big, but it never shows. It is very well displayed and with much taste. We loved the different swimming pools, and changed every day. We were amazed to see all the work that is dealt with each and everyday. Lots of workers, gardeners, all there to please us! All very polite and dedicated to their work. The servers at the different restaurants are doing a great job all the time. We were also able to find place everywhere to sit, or read on c[... read more]haise longues! The food was always over our expectations. I will return to Akumal (Luxury Gran Bahia Principe) Everytime we choose your resort, we are greatly pleased. 10/10 !!

Great time at the GBP Akumal resort
Thoroughly enjoyed the grand Baha'i PrÃncipe Akumal resort. Chose the Akamal as you have access to all resorts on the property including the restaurants and buffets. If you get tired of walking there are trams that you can jump on. Staff were very friendly and always something going on to keep you entertained. We stayed in Villa 83 which was next to the ocean, infinity pool and restaurant (that turns into the late night snack bar after 11 pm).

Awesome Resort
The grounds were beautiful, the rooms were nice, the buffet was awesome- food was delicious. The staff was amazing.
The only issue was our room fridge did not work very good. The room staff was good but were slow and forgot face cloths, and shampoo most of the week. But after a few days when we asked about it, we received them promptly.

Very impressed!
The grounds were immaculate! Food exceeded our expectations. Staff were very friendly! Large resort but lots to do and see! Loved the amount of beach front. Beds were very comfortable compared to other resorts we have stayed at. Would definetly do this one again. Great bang for your buck! This trip was just myself and my wife, however, I would return to this resort with my kids as there was a great set up on site to entertain kids and a long list of daily activitys for them!

Great time!
This resort was great. We really enjoyed being able to travel between the different Bahia resorts to utilize all of the restaurants and activities. The food was very good everywhere we went.
This was a very quiet resort when we were there in early February, which is exactly what we needed.

Great trip!
The grounds are beautiful. Beach and pools are great. The man-made lagoon is full of fish and fun for kids. Lots of neat creatures around for kids to see (e.g., pelicans, iguanas, coatimundi). It's a large resort, but you can hop on a tram anywhere. Drinks were great and the
food was decent. Always options available for vegetarians. It's about 1.5 hours from the airport.Check in was quick, but check out took a long time (only one person was working).

We stayed in villa #53 (close to main lobby). Grounds and beach are kept immaculate. No debris or unkept areas.

Beyond Expectations!!!!!!
Our recent stay at the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal was beyond our expectations. The resort was huge and luxurious, not to mention that you have access to the Sian Khan, Tulum and Coba. The a la carte dinners were delicious and you have buffet breakfast, lunches, dinners and snack bar (24 hours a day). The daily entertainment was offered at each resort. Our beach was heaven. Water was clear and no sea weed in sight. The bar service was provided on the beach, poolside, lobby and your mini bar in [... read more]your room. The grounds are meticulously maintained. We also visited a jewelry and taqueila factory and visited 5th Avenue in downtown Playa de Carmen, lots of shopping. Our experience is one we will never forget and definitely recommend it to everyone.

Tips & Tricks for a great week
“Tips & tricks for a great weekâ€
4 of 5 stars Pending review
This is the longest review I have ever written but there is a lot to say about this resort. Let me start by saying I have never stayed at a large all inclusive and this place, part of a collection of resorts, seemed HUGE to me. (It's big enough that trams run continually to transport the guests.) This was a girls trip & my companions were also put off - we thought we'd made a mistake in booking here. However, as the week progressed[... read more], it really grew on us & by the end we were a little sad to say good bye.
So here's the major points...we booked with Air Transat and decided to take the included transfer to the resort. Because of the size of the property, the bus ride was direct both ways so no need to book private transfer to save time.
We read in the reviews before we left that we needed to book restaurant reservations immediately upon arrival - the resort does not allow advance booking. Well, we didn't realize that immediately meant IMMEDIATELY so we didn't book until after dinner the night we arrived. Almost everything was booked or had very late dining times, like 9:30 pm. We were not happy. One of the reasons we chose the resort was the restaurant options but we took what we could get at that point. Fortunately, the first morning we ran into a lovely Irish couple who told us they had taken to just showing up and asking nicely to be seated. We decided 'what's the worse that can happen?' It worked! We were almost turned away at one, when we were very late for our actual reservation, but we could see available tables so we told them we would wait for a while. I think they could see we were determined so sat us quite quickly. The key to all this is to be polite. Staying at the Akumal gives you access to the restaurants at all the sister properties. We had spectacular meals at Alux, Arlequin, Maiko & Rodizio. Rodizio was a sleeper hit for us - we didn't expect it to be so good! None of us really enjoyed Pescador, which was a casual pick. We had buffet a couple times because we were off the resort a couple days and the buffet is good. Nothing compared to the higher a la cartes, but good. We had most breakfasts & lunch at Los Corales on the beach, which was also right beside our building.
The weak point overall is the house wines. We are far from sommeliers but found only a couple of the reds were decent table wines - the white house offerings, a sauv blanc & Chardonnay were both barely drinkable. I would guess the reason is because the resort is trying to upsell to the wine list, which isn't a great for a resort of this level - the house wine should be okay. Where the wine failed, the amazing staff shone. We had outstanding service from all but standouts were Jorge at Arlequin, Gerardo at Rodizio, Hermelindo & Alejandro at Los Corales & Miguel at the Beach Bar Hut. Make sure you have pesos - you'll want to tip these guys.
Onto the rooms...our room was fine. A little on the small side but clean and the bathroom was huge. We had 2 double beds and a daybed, which we used becasue the beds were true doubles. We lucked out and got building 83, right beside the infinity pool, a breakfast/lunch buffet & the beach. We are all major beach people so it was great to be so close. The beach itself is nice and well maintained but it's not much of a swimming beach. There are big booms, I believe to prevent erosion, that stop the waves from crashing into the shore and create calm, shallow wading spaces. We walked all the way down to the furthest resort and it was similar all along. The resort gives you a towel card to redeem for a beach towel. You can only do this at one pool, which is just silly. At the end of the week you have to return the towel cards. An aside, the whole thing is actually silly. Why not have towels available at all pools and then you could drop them off each evening and not have to deal trying to find somewhere in the room to hang big, wet beach towels?
A couple last things...very few mosquitos. We all got a couple bites but we also didn't wear repellant. It was very cool at night even though it was warm during the day. None of us brought enough sweaters, wraps, etc, so you should pack them. We went to the disco on the property a couple times - it was quite busy and fun. The resort is really close to Tulum. If you want to save some money, you can grab a Collectivo, a local minivan, for 30 pesos right outside the gates of the resort. We also did a full day excursion with Edventure. I booked it via email after we were already there & it was a great day.
Overall, we had a great time & we might even go back.
