Resort was great. Good food and great service. I would definitely recommend this place. Our room was very nice. Ocean view and close to the pool, We were able to walk to other resorts owned by Bahia Principe and enjoy their pools and food. We were never bothered by anyone trying to sell us stuff which was nice.

Very good resort, will be returning.
Food was fantastic, there were lots of options at the buffet. They even had a healthy option at the buffet. Restaurants were very good, no complaints. The Don Pablo was my favourite.
Service was amazing. All the workers really worked hard to make your stay as comfortable as possible. If you have any problems i recommend talking to the guest service manager Priscila Nieto. When I got sick with allergies she went above and beyond making sure I was okay. She is always smiling and you can tell she [... read more]loves her job.
Entertainment was really good. The magics show there was amazing!
Also, if you're a young couple I recommend this resort over the Sian K'ann. My boyfriend and I met two young couples who stayed at the adults only resort and they said that the resort mainly caters to an older crowd, and they were not able to make any noise. It is a very quiet resort, and they would get complaints if they were too loud.
Overall, I definitely recommend the Bahia Principe Akumal, and will be returning soon.

Needs some work
We didn't have hot water for 3 days. There were dead flies on the hotel room walls. The food in the main buffet was the same daily. The a la cartes were excellent. The pools we're clean. The beach is beautiful, the sandbanks are a great idea. Excellent for swimming and snorkeling. The entertainment staff are great!! However, the overall staff and management are not very friendly.

Not very luxurious
Very disappointed in everything. Rooms with dead bugs on the walls, construction going on just steps away from our room, no cold drinks, al lecart dinners booked up the day we arrived until 2 days before we left, wait time for a drink at the swim up bar was at least 25 mins...why bother.

Friendly and welcoming resort.
Hotel very clean. Food excellent. Was disappointed with the weeds on the beach, they tried their best to keep it away but it was too much. Did not like the huge resort complex, found it took too much time to get around.

Affordable/comfortable
let me start off saying that we had a disappointing wait for the check in it was about two and half hours. once we got into our room though it had everything a couple could ask for, comfortable king size bed, robe slippers, mini fridge stocked, shampoo body lotion complimentary bottle of tequila so the check in wait was soon forgotten. The grounds were well manicured very clean, there was a lot of seaweed at the beach but the staff were cleaning it on a daily basis. The beach was spectacular lot[... read more]s of lounge chairs and you could walk for miles. It was nice staying at one hotel and being able to play at three others, they had shuttle service to and from the hotels which didn't take long at all.The pool area was awesome just grabbed a book and a cold drink which was served to me by the staff everyday. This hotel had the best buffet restaurant i have ever been to on my travels, so much variety some of the a la carte restaurants were small portioned but you always had the 24 hour snack bar so you would never go without. There was always lots to do there they had daily activities really fun for the kids, and nightly entertainment in the theater the staff were amazing so helpful and always cleaning, we stayed in June for a week and the mosquitoes were pretty bad after dusk so bring lots of bug spray This was a great vacation hotel i found myself feeling so relaxed here and it offered so much, very affordable very comfortable.

40th Anniversary Vacation
This is our 7th vacation to this resort complex. They exceed in customer service. Truly a 5 star resort. We wouldn't go to any other resort to celebrate our 40th. Great staff, wonderful bar service by the pool and beach. The food is amazing, bed very comfortable, it is a 1.5 hr from the airport, but once you arrive, you are treated like family.

Nice resorts but with cons
I had been here in 2012 and was expecting upgrades after the 'changes' to LUXURY. Sadly, I found no major changes for the better. Except for one thing only - they now offer specialty coffees in all their areas. However, perhaps they did that before and I was not aware of it. Overall, the place is beautiful. They have made the main beach swim-able, and for those of us who are beach lovers, it is a plus. There is also a smaller protected beach at the end of the property, that is less busy.
Howeve[... read more]r, not all the rooms have been renovated. The first room we were in, in Bldg. 65, had a bed as hard as a rock. The tiles were cracked and broken, the tub was chipped, and the worst part, because it rained all week while we were there (NEVER AGAIN TO GO IN JUNE - these were no 10 minute showers, but torrential rains 24/7), our roof leaked in various places, including above our bed. They did change us rooms, and gave us a $150 credit to use in the resort. The second room had a much nicer bed (had I known..) and in kind of a better shape. Although the bath tub was still filthy. The rain did not affect just our room. Every public area was flooded and dangerously slippery. Plus, because nobody could be outdoors, the public areas were so crowded, it was next to impossible to find anywhere to sit. Plus, service relaxed with the rains. So their top notch service, also became almost negligible.
My personal ratings for this resort:
Resort grounds - 5 stars (beautiful and well maintained)
Rooms - 3 stars (although "renovated" I didn't observe any such thing since my last visit in 2012, except for the softer bed in the second room)
Beach - 3.5 stars (very rocky and tons of seaweeds)
Service - 4.5 stars (sometimes 5 stars depending on person)
Food (buffets) - 4 stars
Dining a la carte - 4 stars
Reception - 4 stars
Pools - 4.5 stars
Shuttle cars - 3 stars (not consistent and they made us walk in the torrential rain to one of the restaurants. Thank God the Manager of that restaurants called one for our return, who picked us up in front of the door, as it is supposed to be, and as we saw some others do)
Spa - 5 stars (beautiful environment, massage was top rate)
Room service - 3 to 4.5 stars depending on person. However, they have reduced the choices on the room service menu, especially for breakfast. They have, however, elevated the kind of sandwiches offered. So it's a toss up.
Pillow menu: 2 stars (I requested a traditional pillow 3 times and they brought me the wrong one each time. Meanwhile, I could see them being delivered to other rooms. The concierge was really nice, but somehow that never happened). Their regular pillows are a bunch of rolled up balls put together in a tiny pillow. Not comfortable. Again, this is different from 2012 when they had the traditional pillows (North American style).
Policy: 1 star - even though they had rooms available, they still did not allow people to check in until 3 p.m. For those of us who arrived there at 11 a.m. it was a long, hot wait to endure. Especially since it turned out that the day we arrived was the ONLY sunny day we had there all week, so we missed out on some good beach/pool time. Personally, although we had paid for ocean view room, and had the e-ticket to prove it, they had initially assigned us a regular room and as a result they didn't give us a room until 4:15 that afternoon. This did not help in starting our week off well.
Internet - 2 stars - always busy, can only be used in main lobby. They no longer have the complimentary computers for guests to use in a separate lobby, and if our phones/tablets don't work so well, then we can't have any access. This is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
Bars - 4.5 for service. However, one of the lobby bars was never open. In 2012 I used to enjoy going into that one when the louder entertainment show was on in the main theater/lobby bar. That one used to have a one or two person show, doing oldie tunes or nicer, less chaotic music. They did not have that this time, and kept that bar closed...
Entertainment - 2 - the animation team this time were not as good as last time I went. Plus all their shows are tailored to the young people. Even their Michael Jackson show only included the latest songs from that artist. Those of us older folks stopped listening to his stuff as we became parents, etc. I was looking forward to some nostalgic songs but the oldest one they offered was Billy Jean, and not even in completion, but as a part of a medley which did not include any other older song. In 2012 this same show was amazing!! It was interesting to watch most people in the 45-90 range leave after the first 15 minutes. Their other shows are also truly tailored to the younger crowd. They really need to bring back the solo artists in that other bar, for those of us who want to relax while enjoying the entertainment and not get aggravated by loudness and cacophony!!! Too bad. With the rain all week long, this was something to look forward to, but totally disappointing.
Luggage: 1 - Even after making arrangement the night before to pick up our luggage, nobody showed up. Upon calling them, they told us it would be a 45 minute wait, and our bus was leaving in 40 minutes. We ended up lugging our luggage ourselves, which wasn't that tremendous of a problem since our room was close to the lobby. However, there are rooms that are much, much further and those would be a problem. So something to keep in mind. We travel light, but a lot of people don't!
Travel agent - 5 - I will always book my travel with you guys in the future (if I travel again after this nightmare trip)!!! The rain did us in. We both got back with Montezuma's revenge, which we are still suffering. I've never had this happen before in Mexico, so I think the rains had something to do with them being unable to keep things as hygienic as they normally would. In any case, thank you to Shauna and Teresa for your help in arranging this trip. Next year, it will be an earlier time of year, that is for sure!! No more rain trips for me!!
Location - 2 - it is the farthest hotel on the Mayan Strip. Therefore, travel time to and from the airport is ridiculously long, almost 1.5 hours. This also means losing hours on your departure day as they pick you up over 4 hours before your scheduled departure time. So, we basically had 5.25 days there, instead of the 7 we paid for. (First day shot because of late room check in. Last day non-existent because of travel, left hotel at 6:50 a.m.).
Regards.

Good Times With The Boys
Went to this resort with two buddies, we had an awesome time. Food was great, service fantastic and the grounds immaculate. The beach wasn't the greatest but otherwise we had a fantastic time. Also if you like drinking, the resort had Hennesy, Courvoisier, Grey Goose etc... all at no extra cost which was nice if you wanted a smooth drink.
Lots of pools, which were all pretty good, entertainment could be better in my opinion. We didn't watch any of the evening time shows except one which was fai[... read more]rly entertaining. Overall a good place for a stay but maybe not the best for someone in their 20s with friends as there aren't many people that age.

Excellent Vacation!
Loved our 14 day stay at Akumal. Fantastic food at the Akumal and Sian Kaan buffets, always a great variety of international and Mexican dishes. Our a la carte favs were Mexican, Brazilian BBQ, and Italian. All of the staff were accommodating and very helpful, they really made us feel comfortable. The top shelf liquors served at Akumal and Sian were much appreciated, as we have stay at lower end resorts that served generic brands that were simply awful. Bahia Principe Akumal
Excellent facility and superb customer service. We booked a Junior Suite. There was a water leak and we were quickly relocated to a ocean front suite as a goodwill gesture. The food was excellent. It's amazing how they manage such a large resort with so much going on. The drum show was the best among all the night shows. The Michael Jackson show at the Punta Cana resort was better than this one.
The culture show that costs $16 per person to get in was not that much fun. I would recommend you spe[... read more]nd that money to visit Xcaret or similar excursion. Internet is only on the lobby and limited; which is great to escape the madness actually. A naughty tip, in your room, if you try to download the Bahia Principe app, you get free internet for five/six minutes. :) . Would recommend this hotel with a heart bit.

Fabulous Family Vacation
Our 3rd family vacation to the Bahia - a success"
Noticeable difference with all the renovations and upgrades made to Akumal. In addition to the beautiful 'spa-like' look of the premises, we also noted a marked difference in the level of service from the staff. The restaurants- especially the Arlekin and Don Pablo- great menu and excellent service.
However, Tulum is looking tired and in much need of a revamp both in terms of look and staff.

Great, quality resort - amazing food!!!
Would definitely go back to this resort on a repeat trip to the Mayan Riviera... and the extra few hundred bucks (for a family of 4) was well worth it! The location right on the (best part of the) beach, the quality of the food/bar service were far superior to the other resorts (Tulum and Coba) we visited in the complex and the fact that while the resort was fully booked, it always felt empty! (due to the exclusivity of the beach/resort). And of all the all-inclusive resorts we've visited in the[... read more] Caribbean (Cuba, D.R., even the Sandals in Antigua), the food was by far the best! The a la cartes were top notch, but the buffet at this resort was even more impressive!
The only minor negatives are the room sizes (for quad occupancy) are a bit underwhelming and the beds are barely doubles... also, beware of high expectations for the beach if you value the long stretches of white sand, clear water, big surf you might find in Cuba, D.R. or Jamaica... there are small pockets/coves of relatively nice beach in this part of Mexico, but much of the coast is rockier due to a reef. The trade-off is you can do some snorkeling right off the resort and see a ton of tropical fish...

Wonderful Resort.
This was an awesome resort. We have traveled to Mexico 4 previous times and this was by far our favorite. Clean rooms, grounds and public areas. The buffet food was excellent with lots of variety. Tried two a la cartes which we enjoyed. The pool was like bath water and never found it crowded or difficult to find a lounge. Yes there is lots of walking if your room is not near the main lobby. However the trolley comes frequently if you wish to ride. We are both in our early 60's and walked most of[... read more] the time. The butler service was excellent. Staff all courteous, friendly and helpful. The only downside was the 1 1/2 hour bus ride from the airport to the resort. But the bus was comfortable with no incessant talking by the tour people.

Best trip ever, will book again
Hotel beautiful!!!! People wonderful. Food the best I have ever had on vacation.!!!!!!will book 2 weeks next year. Can't wait to go back. We did not utilize the butler service, but next time will use them to help book a la carte dinners. long drive from the airport but cold beer on the bus. Entertainment hit and miss, best night was the live band night. We love to dance. Would highly recommend this hotel!!!!
