Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Excellent Stay ... not sure about 5 star
First, we enjoyed our stay very much. The beach was one of the best on the island and the room was extremely clean and comfortable. We also enjoyed a wonderful day trip to Havana (well worth it as long as your tour guide walks you around) ... but it was a long day. The pool, grounds and hotel were very well kept and clean ... and being an adults only was very calming (not sure if younger adults would like the quiet). And the entertainment was first rate ... no cheesy Michael Jackson imperson[... read more]ators.
On the negative side we found this hotel's food selection to be very limited (of all 4 resorts we stayed at in Cuba). Although the "a la carte" restaurants were good, the buffet was bland and lacked variety ... but very good fish. A little thing but the room towels seemed to repel water instead of absorb ... very odd; and there weren't enough beach towels to exchange.
As for the staff, some were superb and others severely lacked enthusiasm. While some hustled and worked to make sure you had all you needed (and got tips to relfect this), others seemed to be very bored (despite all that needed doing) and uninterested (most of the lobby bar staff seemed to have this attitude).
As for Transat, excellent reps at the resort (Mai-Ling and Margarita); and the transfers to the hotel and airport went without a hitch. The plane seats were very tight and the staff a little bored ... but it was only a 3 hour flight so not too much of an issue (except I am sure if you are tall).
In conclusion, great weather, good solid resort, excellent entertainment but "hit and miss" staff and food. A solid four star but we question the five star rating.

Memories Cayo Largo: Awesome Beach!
Booked online through Tripcentral agent Saskia Singh. Very attentive informative Agent before and after holiday. Thx. Saskia. Flight was with Cubana Air had no issues. Quick Airport service on arrival....10 min. transfer to resort big bonus. Excellent Holiday! It's all about the BEACH for me. Pristine maintained beach infront of resort, cristal clear turquoise water. Sand has consistency of icing sugar. Great for walking. Amazing uninhabited shoreline to Paraiso and Sirena Beaches 8km walk. No i[... read more]ssues with finding a palapa.... was at beach by 8-9 a.m. though. Resort grounds, buildings exteriors and pool exceeded my expectations. All in good condition. Newly painted buildings new boardwalks to beach...all great. Interior of my room 2313 was basic but clean. Great maid service. Only minor issue was with water pressure and no water during certain hours a few times. Was an issue with some people. Only ate at buffet restaurant (breakfast + dinner) beach restaurant (lunch) both spaces great and open air. Food and service at both was OK sometimes good. Room for improvement. Comparing to Melia Cayo Santa Maria which has been consistently good on both fronts...3 1/2 vs 4 1/2 star though. Beach + resort grounds + buildings better Sol Cayo Largo. In my view. Interior of rooms + function, service and food noticeable edge to Melia Cayo Santa Maria. In my view. 6 times MCSM. Can't wait to go back to Sol Cayo Largo. As I said at start of my review " It's all about the beach for me."

Memories Cayo Largo: First time trip to Sol, Cayo Largo, Cuba
Just back from our first trip to the Sol resort in Cayo Largo (CL) Cuba.
The purpose of our trip was to spend some downtime on a great beach.
Flight:
Flight in from Toronto on Cubana Airlines was uneventful, with about an hour stopover in Santiago de Cuba before flying to Cayo Largo. The flight back from Cayo Largo was direct to Toronto. No entertainment on either flight so plan accordingly. Food served on both flights and drinks available for sale also.
Bus ride from the airport to the [... read more]resort is only 10 minutes.
Staff/Service
The Cuban people who work at the resort were wonderful. Very hard working and always friendly to us. Service was great and we had no concerns during our stay.
Room
We stayed on a second floor room near the back of the property. We still had a bit of an ocean view from our balcony and you could hear the waves crash in on the beach.
The room had a comfortable king size bed with an additional single bed.
A/C worked but we found it too cold so we used the ceiling fan or kept the patio door open to get some ocean breeze.
Other amenities: Safe in room, TV (did not use it much), fridge, one bottle of water per day.
Loved the vaulted ceilings.
Water pressure was low at times for us, but always lots of hot water.
The room was always kept very clean
Renovations underway - pool swim up bar area was closed, lots of painting
Beach
The most beautiful beaches we have ever visited. Beautiful walking beach
Divided into two areas, clothing and clothing optional areas, with the C/O area being very busy.
Bar on the beach, in the clothing area of the beach
The boardwalks were in very good condition and looked like they had been re-built recently.
Red flag most days, but still lots of people swimming, take your ability into consideration. The waves were fun to swim in.
All sand, no rocks, no jellyfish, no sea urchins anywhere.
Loved the Iguana who was out daily
Food
The food was good throughout the resort.
We ate mostly at the buffet, plus at both a la carte's
Loved the band playing Cuban music at lunch at the beach grill daily.
Pool
the main pool was very quiet. We used it on our last day prior to departure. Lots of chairs and a good mix of sun and share areas to choose from. Loungers were in very good condition. Most people migrated to the beach area while we were there.
Internet - did not use it. No comment, but available in the lobby area.
Texting did work for our cell phone.
Recommend:
Exchanging money at the airport, it is a better rate than at the hotel.
Getting a ground floor room if you have mobility issues. There are no elevators to second floor rooms.
Getting a beach front second floor room if you like a direct view of the Caribbean sea from your balcony. The ground floor rooms are blocked by the sand dune area.
We had a great visit to the Sol resort, met lots of nice people.
Recommend and can't wait to return to spend more time on some of the greatest beaches in the world.

Sol Rio de Luna y Mares: Great place for vacation in Cuba
Good hotel, excellent beach, great stuff. There is some renovation in progress in Mares main lobby as well as in some areas of Luna. Hope it'll make it even more pleasant to stay at. The room we stayed in had a bit of a leak from the sealing in bathroom after small rain or use of AC, but as we didn't spend much time in there it didn't bother us much. Sound of nightly disco party on the beach was a bit too noticeable in our room - it certainly tolerable especially after day of all the activities[... read more] you expect to fall asleep quickly. All other aspects were beyond the expectations. Stuff is very friendly, resort overall is very clean and very well maintained, beach is superior, selection and quality of food is very well (I was wondering about reviewers who complained about food - what they eat while at home? - hamburgers, hotdogs and coke is also available - specifically for them :)). Besides that there is reasonable selection of meat, fish, pasta that is cooked to your taste as well as salads and buffet. Beach and other activities are at great selection. Everything is available for a great vacation.
Wait time at the Holguin airport on the way back is a bit unpleasant. It would definitely help if 3h at the empty airport (it was our only flight at this time) can be reduced to something more reasonably justifiable.

Melia Marina Varadero: comfortable.
The hotel Melia Marina was quite, comfortable, clean and quite. The staff were friendly and helpful. There were a couple of pools to choose from though we had to walk across a bridge to get to the beach, however not to worry there was always motorised carts taking guests to and from the necessary areas.

Melia Marina Varadero: Great time
My fiancee and I had a great time here. Excellent service, nice rooms, close to the beach, good drinks. The buffet was very good for breakfast lunch and dinner. The food at the formal reataurants was not as good and I would recommend sticking with the buffet or exploring Varadero for local options once in a while

Hotel Vigia: Mixed review
The Beach, Staff, Food AMAZING! Unfortunately the rooms need a lot of work. There were 8 of us that went on this vacation and we all requested to change our rooms due to mold, toilets and air-conditioning not working. The staff was so accommodating and the new rooms they gave us were acceptable. We are also a group that like to experience tours and unfortunately (poss due to the size of the resort) none of the representatives ever showed up to assist us. This is my 3rd time visiting Cuba [... read more]so I am well aware of what to expect.

The Melia Cayo Guillermo never disappoints, I feel relaxed and at home before I walk through the front lobby. The new beach is amazing and provides lots of level walking area for beach walkers. The grounds are continually being groomed and well maintained. Our room was kept in tip top shape by Mildrey, and Jesus, Tommy, Yonel, Alfredo, Angelo, Carlo, Maria, Milly, Ilemy, and many other staff made our trip great. i liked it better when it first opened,i was there in 2002 and the animation team they had then got people up and doing things and the place wasn't run down.there wasn't many people at the resort so easy getting things you wanted, the staff was friendly and helpful.it seemed like the staff was mostly young people just learning how things were to be done.i didn't get the rooms i asked for so that started my time there on a bad note but the rooms i got were good and joined together and they explain[... read more]ed to me that one of the rooms i wanted i could have but the joined room was under construction at the moment.i did meet up with a couple of the staff i knew from before so that made the trip worth while.maybe next time i might try one of the other newer resorts in that same area.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Amazing Resort and Stay
Was impressed with all the facilities. The staff were very pleasant and very helpful. Staying at this resort seven days isn't long enough to enjoy all the facilities. The pool area and activities held were well organized and put together very well. The night life and staff made our vacation by entertaining everyone and ensuring everyone left the evening with an enjoyable evening.

Hotel Camino del Mar: funny you should ask??
Room 1328 filled with god dammed bed begs - I have over 80 bites on my body!!! Spraying lanacain, drinking apple cider vinegar and dabbing tea tree oil to get rid of the itch!!! Through my clothes out, luggage out - everything. Monday night 7:57 pm, we got back home Saturday morning. Itchy like hell! No, would not recommend this hotel.

Melia Las Dunas: Good Resort for $$
This was my second visit in the past year. Part of the resort was closed and looked like upgrades were happening all over the resort.
Room and service was very good. Only complaint was the hot water was inconsistent- sometimes warm at best.
Food was very good. The omelette and pasta station were awesome and the grilled chicken at the Beer Garden was very good.
I would visit this resort again.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Some inconveniences
One major problem occured in the bungalow no 11 where my room 11209 was located.
Indeed, a messy sewage situation occured just the day I arrived - October 31st.
No communication from the front desk or the hotel happened to explain the source of that foul odor in my room and others' rooms in the same building.
I do not like to complain, especially in an environment of poverty. I have lived in Africa and it has taught me to be very very tolerant of the consequences of poverty.
It is on[... read more]ly on the next to last day of my stay that the chamber maid finally turned the fan on... something I did not know even existed in my room. That morning, the odor was extremely strong due to the fact that I had shut my patio door to avoid hearing the bulldozer working throughout the night just in front of our bungalow no 11 (on the beach). By 7am, I was out of my room every morning due to that foul smell that I feared to be toxic to me. The fan helped considerably to clear out that foul odor. I was so pleased by this gesture that I reported the situation to the customer service desk in order to offer a particular tip for that initiative. But, as I also proposed to the customer service desk upon my departure, the chamber maid should have made sure that the room 11209 was aired and ventilated right from day 1 of this sewage situation, which was not done.
In my view, this situation was altogether very badly handled by the hotel.
Also, the toilet in my room 11209 was not cleaned during the first 3 days of my stay. The shower contained enough mildew traces to discourage the usage of the bath and shower. The floors were also enough covered with mildew that I did not walk bare foot in that room.
Cuba being still under embargo, shortages of cleaning products, tools, paint, maintenance were very evident.
This resort seems to be a 5-star complex. I believe that it is more a 3.5 star complex.
The back door of my room did not lock. Even then, after a couple of days on the resort, I felt safe enough not to worry about that situation.
Regarding the food and its quality, it was definitely not a 5-star type of buffet. Just the same, it was evident that all efforts were made by the staff to be polite and as helpful as they can be in the circumstances. The fact that you could see what you ate was very reassuring - example: fish that I could chose and have grilled in front of my eyes.
One evening I left hotel paper and anti-mosquito products on the table while I went to serve myself at the buffet. Upon my return, everything had disappeared. This event was reported to customer service and the dining room manager.
All in all, I still enjoyed my stay since I was able to be out and about 18 hours a day, spending time in my room only to sleep the 6-7 hours per night that I require.

Sol Palmeras: Myth: People don't go to Cuba for the food
With 3 previous trips to both Cuba and the Dominican, we simply thought good food in the Caribbean was impossible. WRONG! The food at Sol Palmeras was amazing. Not only was our plate full after a walk through the buffet line, but many, many nice options never made it to our table. A la cartes included the Steak House, Mexican, Italian and Chinese. Didn't make it to the Mexican, but assume the fajitas were good. The beef fillet at the Steak House was amazing. Chicken parm was tasty at O Sole Mio [... read more]and the Chinese food was authentic and delicious.
Our original room in the main hotel was alright, but the fridge made a loud bang and the bed was less than comfy. We had requested an upper floor and both our son's room and ours was on the ground floor. Our son upgraded his room to a bungalow on the 2nd morning and when we saw his, we did the same for an extra 120 CUC's. Unfortunately, a couple we met on a Havana excursion told us they got an upgrade to a bungalow as well - FOR FREE!
Lots of great beach. Many palapas. Ping pong, tennis, giant chess & Connect 4, and lots of other activities.
Nightly entertainment a little weak. Cuban internet is a pain.
Overall, absolutely great value and highly recommended.

Our 2nd visit to this intimate, quiet, un-crowded, classy resort.
Lobby bar nightly live entertainment at the piano bar to relax around soft lighting and cocktails. Excellent service. Experienced professional staff. Al a cart restaurants are 5 out of 5 for service, flavor, hot delicious food in spotless formal settings; Linen tablecloths, candles, Spanish wine that's really quite good.
Overall the best Cuban resort we have been to, and there have been many.
Its easy to get everywhere ar[... read more]ound 1 large.pool, 1 beach BBQ restaurant, and no teens or kids or disco beat all day long for those of us over 60.

Coming back again in 6 months. Fabulous value for money.
