Just got back from a week at Rio de Oro and had an amazing time! The resort and staff were terrific - very welcoming and accomodating. We enjoyed the synchronized swimming shows in the swimming pool (especially the one at night) and snorkelling right off the beach. A lot of effort was made to keep the guests happy and entertained. Compliments to the chefs in the a la carte restaurants - we were very impressed with the food and the service. We went here on the recommendation of a friend and I wou[... read more]ld absolutely recommend this resort to anyone!

Melia Marina Varadero: Very enjoyable!
The room that we stayed in was very spacious and the washroom was very clean. We got a really nice view of the pool area from our balcony. What a nice and relaxing vacation! This hotel was located very close to a BEAUTIFUL BEACH. The staffs were friendly and very professional. The à la carte restaurants were delicious with great service and we were very pleased! The buffets were good in general, but there weren't a lot of variety in food choices, yet we were still able to find a few delicious o[... read more]ptions. I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would also come back again because we really enjoyed our experience. The only negative thing I can say is that housekeeping staffs do not change your bed sheets when they make your bed. Our bed sheets and pillow sheets had bad odours from the first night we checked in and it stayed that way until our last day. Otherwise, everything else is a thumb's up!

Melia Marina Varadero: Great Stay
This hotel wasn't as good as when we had visited 1 year ago but it is still a great hotel. The food seemed to have gone down in quality within the a la carte restaurants, and the rooms already need repairs or touch ups. We had to call maintenance three times for our air conditioner to poor water pressure.
However, the grounds are great and the beach is stunning. The service is great and always with a smile.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Not a 5 star resort !
Water is full of rocks, the beach is small , the food is not good at the buffet. Buffet is outside, full of birds that are eating from plates, poof variety of food. If you want a decent vacation and a nice beach you have to upgrade to royal services.

Sol Varadero Beach: NOT A GOOD RESORT
My husband and I along with my brother stayed here the week of Sept.21-28th. I first want to say that we travel a lot and have been to Cuba before and stayed in a 3 star which was a 5 star compared to this resort!! I'm not a fussy person and I knew the food would be not great having been to Cuba before. The omelettes in the morning at the buffet were great but that is about it. There was bacon one morning only in the 7 days we were there. The coffee was almost always cold at the buffet as was al[... read more]l the other food. There are only 2 a la cartes available while the other half of the resort is under renovation : Oriental and Cuban=both are very good.
The room was fair and clean -beds were awful but thank goodness the pillow was good so it made it more bearable. Bring your adaptors to plug your electronics in as the room is 220 volt.
Be sure you have toilet tissue on hand at all times because the ladies bathrooms were always out AND to make it worse there is only ONE bathroom in the lobby that actually locks-all the other doors you have to stick a piece of tissue paper to wedge in the door to keep it closed-(something I learned from watching others )hence why the shortage in toilet tissue!! I went to the "Customer Service" in the lobby on Saturday and spoke with a guy named Vlaliano (I don't know the exact spelling of his name) to let him know my concern re the doors not locking and how inconvenient it is to try and hold the door and pull your pants up at the same time and he said to me with a smirk on his face that someone else had also mentioned it and it would be fixed in the am. Tuesday came and still not fixed !! To make it even worse Tuesday evening while I was in the bathroom a female came in from Customer Service to use the bathroom herself and she IMMEDIATELY placed toilet tissue to wedge the door closed. I looked at her and said how terrible is this we have to do this and why aren't they fixing it. She said it was mentioned to "MANAGEMENT" but they can't get the parts anymore!! I said why can't they just put something else on then-she had no answer. Funny thing is I know Management reads these and usually comments but don't bother because nothing you say will make me believe you will fix this!!
It's a terrible resort and the bad attitudes of the staff outweigh the good including Customer Service!! The website also states it has facilities with ramps and special access. I saw only two ramps-one in the lobby and one outside. There are lots of little steps and stairs all over the place which are not well lit up in the evenings which makes it very dangerous. We saw lots of people limping on the resort and I'm pretty certain it's from tripping on the steps and stairs!
If you enjoy the shows in the evening DO NOT GO BY WHAT IS ON THE BULLETIN BOARD IT IS NOT WHAT YOU'LL SEE. Sunday was supposed to be a Magic Show it never happened...I guess it had it's own disappearing act!! There was no announcement from the Announcer on the stage just when the show was to start advising there would be no magic show either. We asked why the next day and were told that the shows go by "what kind of people show up" What the heck is that supposed to mean???.........
if you don't have a upgraded room with a coffeemaker good luck trying to get a coffee before 10 am. The Tea and Coffee Corner is "supposed" to be serving coffee at 7am but the entire week we were there we could not get coffee until 10 am. The bar also is supposed to be open at 10 am but most days would not start serving until 10:30 am.
The pools were great and clean. The weather was fantastic BUT there are lots of resorts in Cuba ...my honest opinion /suggestion is to find a different one. I would say this is a 2 star compared to other 3 stars in Cuba. I will not go back here and would not recommend this resort to anyone ......

Melia Marina Varadero: could use improvement
We initially booked a classic marina view room. Once we got there, the room was very warn down, furniture looked really worn and old, rusty bins and refrigerator. it did not seem very clean either. We asked to see other rooms.
We were told upgraded rooms were on The Level, and extra $400. We picked a room on the Level. First night and we had ants in our bathroom, bedroom, including in our bed.
We were moved to another room. This room was fine. Very spacious, clean, great view of pool are[... read more]a and ocean in distance. The bed is NOT comfortable, very hard and just a thin sheet instead of blanket.
The hotel overall is only three years old, but one would think its over ten! major maintenance is needed all over the place in the hotel.
The staff in the hotel are great, cleaning ladies, concierge, wait staff.. however the bartenders at the bars outside in pool and oceanside bar, barely paid any attention to you. Drinks were good and strong however.
Food is a miss at the oceanside restaurant and 24hour poolside restaurant. Buffet had pretty good options, pizza guy will make you a personal pizza, just had to ask. Great desserts. The a la' carte restaurants are not worth the reservations except the Asian restaurant, great sampling menu. The V Lounge at the Level is also great, nice Lobster dinner! and their take on eggs benny for breakfast was good. Also the wait staff in the V Lounge was wonderful, however they could use training on waiting tables effectively as our dinner as well as everyone around were their almost two hours waiting for drinks, then appy's then finally dinner.. But that is a management problem.
The beach is beautiful. Most times there was a cart offering rides down to the beach. The pool is great, clean.
The entertainment is really lacking, if not extremely boring.
The fact there is no disco, is a major downfall. Nothing do do after 9pm.

The hotel itself, rooms, public places are all good, bars everywhere, snacks and delicious ice cream served almost all the time. The only problems are lot of mosquitos in rooms (we stayed on the ground floor) and mojito with too much sugar in it:)
4 stars for food because some restorants don't cook delicious food (ex. mexican. but italian and seafood serves realy delicios food). The beach is amazing!!!

I have stayed at this resort 6x and will continue to. Why change perfection? The people, food, entertainment and accommodation were Excellent. Hotel Camino del Mar: Awesome resort....2nd visit...won't be my last either!!!
I absolutely love this resort, I was there in July 2015 for the 1st time and knew I'd be back. Just returned Sept. 16th, 2016 after 1 glorious week...had a little bit of rain but nothing that really caused much grief. The food was great, although I do find the buffet does become a little repetitive, however, there are so many choices so it makes it easy to change things up.
The rooms are always clean and beautiful, we did have some trouble with air conditioning in the first room we were a[... read more]ssigned....and after a very horrible experience with an awful man in customer service by the name of Joaquin, who threatened to call the police on my 64 year old Aunt and my 52 year old, partially disabled self...for what he felt was aggression from us....really?....while complaining...this after being lied to by him over the phone about the air .....anyway....the man was disgraceful...doesn't belong at the resort....I really missed Mary who was there last year in customer service!! Joaquin needs to find another line of work....customer service is not for him.....he even used the F bomb while speaking to us!! I was in shock....ended up in tears...after a 6:45am flight in from Canada...a good 3 - 4 hour wait for a room that didn't have air conditioning ..... I needed to have a central location room due to my disabilities which made things a little harder in placing is unfortunately.
Finally, the front desk manager, unfortunately I cannot remember her name...Maryilou....maybe?....a beautiful, tall, dark thin young woman couldn't have been more concerned and helpful. She had us moved to a perfect location....a beautiful suite of all things!!...had a bed moved in for us and we were set!!!
Another wonderful vacation spent at the Melia Cayo Guillermo!!!
Right now...it is my favorite place on earth and I can't wait to go back!!

Melia Las Antillas: Good Holiday!
Older hotel and needs some upgrades and maintenance which they are working on. We had a great room in the main building; close to the restaurants and coffee bar. Fantastic beach - very clean clear warm water. Be aware; smoking is allowed in pretty much any out door area and we found this great for us and from the looks of it many other appreciated the freedom to smoke. Food is a bit of a shock; really weird items on the buffet; but once we found what we liked it was fantastic! Weird that y[... read more]ou could only get beer in the buffet - no mixed drinks; no coffee other than at breakfast; I guess they want you to use the coffee bar. Lots of pool and beach chairs; but as usual there were towel hogs; one thing that we noticed is that some people hogged chairs at the beach and the pool - come on; let some one else have a chair - you don't use 2 at a time. All in all we met some great staff and had a great time.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Great vacation!
Me and my husband stayed in Paradisus Rio De Oro during a second week of September 2016. Overall we had a great vacation, considering it was during a low season and there were renovations going on. The only negative thing that stood out for us was the fact, that the buffet restaurant is located in an open restaurant setting and it could be quite hot and humid in there. My husband was complaining about the " long pants" rule for attending a buffet dinner. On top of it, the chairs had sticky han[... read more]dles and upholsteries were really stained. The tables had no tablecloth, there were just plastic runners and cutleries were placed directly on it. Well, I understand that there is a problem with water generally and maybe that is why the tables had no tablecloth?
Overall, we were happy to stay in this hotel, it has a beautiful settings, a lot of lounging areas to enjoy the scenery, food was very tasty. I would have enjoyed more types of beer, not only light beer in the fridge.
In the middle of our stay, we were moved to another room, all went smoothly and staff was very helpful.
One more thing, we could have had 4 a la card restaurant bookings, but the gentleman who was reserving our tables managed to book only 3 dinners, and there seem to be no initiative to help with the 4th one. It seemed, there was an expectation of us to reserve one in the Royal area, where we would have to pay for it and we were not interested, so after that, there was nothing available in Mediterranean restaurant. That had left a negative impression.
Otherwise, I would return again.

Hotel Camino del Mar: Very Relaxing!
First and foremost, I would like to thank Eliana at Tripcentral for being the best travel agent I have ever worked with.
The flight via Air Transat to Melia Cayo Guillermo was very smooth.
We were greeted with a very friendly smile at the front reception upon arrival. Our room was not ready upon arrival but was quickly resolved within an hour which gave us some time to relax and have a drink while we waited.
We were given a beautiful room on the third floor with a very beautiful view[... read more]. We realized however that because we are in our mid 50's that the high floors were a little difficult to deal with. We went back to the front desk and advised them and we were given a ground floor room the next day.
The staff at Melia Cayo Guillermo were all very friendly. They made you feel like at home and with family.
The grounds were beautiful, the pool was amazing and of course what can you say about the beach...SIMPLY BREATH TAKING :-)
The entertainment staff (Edel and Lazaro) were always encouraging the guests to participate in different activities all day. They work very hard to make your stay enjoyable. Best foot massage ever during aqua gym.
The servers in the buffet (Yani, Tony) were always there for what ever we needed. The juice maker (I'm sorry I cant remember his name) always had a banana/papaya smoothie for me each morning.
The mosquitos were really bad but it comes with the time of year being very hot during the day and a slight shower early evening...just bring bug spray.
I was greeted by customer service (Juanquino) the night before we were leaving in the lobbly as I was using the internet to advise my family of how much fun we are having...he was very kind to take the time to find out how our stay was.
I arrived back home and found an email from customer Service at the Melia Cayo Guillermo thanking me for staying there and that if I had any concerns or questions that I could contact them a anytime.
Overall our stay during Sept 9-16 was amazing...I cant wait to go back! I would definitely recommend this place to all my family and friends here in Toronto Canada.
