We've just returned on Jan 10 from a one week stay at the memories flamenco and can't say enough good things about the resort. Being our third trip to Cuba we weren't expecting the greatest food but to our surprise the food was the best we've had while visiting the country. There was a variety of foods and grilling stations so there was always something to choose from. The a la cartes were good too! Jorge who worked in the buffet for dinner was great and not once did our drinks empty as he was v[... read more]ery diligent on ensuring we had drinks and everything was good.
The grounds are beautiful. I do not believe I've seen flowers all over a resort in this magnitude before. Everywhere you looked there was at least one bush with flowers whereas other resorts it seems they pick the flowers so you don't really see them like this. Gardeners were out every day trimming and tidying the bushes. The beach is stunning. We are not typically beach people but after spending an afternoon at the beach we went there the next two days. The snorkelling was fun and we saw crabs, live sand dollars, small schools of fish along with needle nose fish all within a few metres of the shoreline.
Hillary in the lobby bar was a treat to get every morning for coffee. She was very friendly and helpful. She seemed to know when to come back to see if we would like anything else a lot quicker than some of the others.
Now for the martini bar......a first for myself at a resort south. Yoel was working the martini bar for most of the time we were there and I must say he did a great job! He was friendly and personable even when it was busy. We tried so many types but I would say our favourite was the Pink Lady. The chocolate and coffee were runners up. There was a couple nights were they couldn't open up because of the wind but when they were open they always had a line up.
We booked diamond club for our stay and dealt quite a bit with Dalien(I believe that's the spelling) at the diamond club counter. She was always a pleasure and very helpful to our needs. Whenever we had a question she had the answer which is nice when your away on vacation. The one thing I was impressed with was that Dalien would ask if everything was good and if we were enjoying ourselves. On other resorts you do not always get asked but this is not the case here. The only sour note I have is upon check out, (diamond club is given a 2pm check out which was nice as we were not leaving the resort until 6pm) we had purchased coffee through the hotel so we had to pay for the coffee but as a result we were told by the female (not Dalien) the we could not check out with her and had to do the other counter. I understand due to cashes and slips but then when this occurred we went from no line to a line of four to five people ahead of us. As the luggage area was full due to the later check out we asked her at the diamond club if there was another area or if we could keep them in the diamond club space behind the counter as there were other suitcases. She sighed and said I guess so but there isn't suppose to be any behind here. The question was asked then about what are we suppose to do if the room is full and with a snotty response were told keep them in the lobby that's what others do. We then went and spoke to an employee at the non diamond club counter who stated the luggage was fine where it was and we could leave it. I don't typically line to end a positive experience with a negative but that is what happened right at the end of our trip. Taking out our minor bad experience, we had a wonderful time and if we return to Cuba would definitely consider this resort.

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Not as Advertised
Memories Caribe Cayo Coco
Travelled with Sunwing from Toronto for 10 days from December 30, 2016 to January 9th, 2017
Pros
- 30 minutes from the airport
- no young children
- fast check in at reception
- got the renovated room that we requested
- beautiful grounds
- beautiful beach
- lots of beach chairs and shade
- excellent beach drink service (Yaxel was amazing!)
- big pool with lots of chairs
- good pizza at the beach
- free safe in the room
- nice flat screen tv in renov[... read more]ated room
- rooms are clean
- drinking water, toilet paper and towels replenished
- buffet was good but the same every day
- Cuban and Asian restaurants were decent
- updated air conditioners in most rooms
- service in buffet was good
- service in piano bar was good
Cons
- renovated rooms have no patio furniture (told it had not arrived yet)
- no bathroom doors (poor design)
- no coffee makers in renovated rooms and not available when requested
- no hot water on several days
- no water at all on some days
- lost hydro on several occasions
- too many renovations going on
- large beach restaurant closed and being used for storage
- disco closed
- spa closed
- lookout tower closed
- pool bar and large pool snack bar were closed for half the vacation
- not enough public washrooms as several were closed for renovations - dirty and old
- ran out of certain alcohol at the beach but it was available if you were Diamond club
- due to ongoing problems in our renovated room we were moved to one of the duplex bungalows which was much better but it is always a hassle to have to move
Summary
This resort will probably be good once all the renovations are complete however, in the meantime, it feels like you are not getting the vacation that you are being sold or are expecting to receive. If you got an amazing price, and know in advance what to expect, then you should be okay with the resort.

Iberostar Origin Playa Pilar: It was OK
We stayed from January 1st to 8th. We were at the Iberostar Daquiri last year and did an excursion to Pilar beach. That it was prompted us to travel to Playa Pilar this year. We knew it was new, but it didn't feel very new and impressive. Things were still being done around the resort. It is a 50 minute ride to the airport.
Beach --> as the description says there is not much of a beach area. There is an elevated dock that you can sit on and climb down into the water (no waves on the islet). [... read more]The small beach area doesn't have great sand. However, you can walk the paved road (15-20 minutes) to get to Pilar beach or you can walk through the water (just make sure to keep your belongings above chest area). Pilar beach is unbelievable. Note - chairs are 2 pesos each for rental at Pilar beach, or you can just use your towel.
Rooms --> Cuba really needs to improve on their beds, bedding, and pillows. The beds are hard and the pillows are very thin. The shower has a glass panel that allows you to see right through to the bed area (maybe a concern if you are traveling with a family). You can also see someone on the toilet from your bed.
Food --> typical bland Cuban food. The Japanese A la carte Teppanyaki was very good (they also put on a great show). The Mediterranean was the second best A la carte, and it is the only place you can get lobster. The Italian A la carte was good. There is only one buffet. They need more chefs to work at the "cook food on demand" stations because there are often long lines. If you go to eat with someone who just grabs food from the buffet, they will be done their meal before you even get a chance to sit down.
Snack Bar --> serves pizza, burgers and hotdogs. Open between 3 and 5 pm.
Pool Area --> very nice. However, they have these new wicker chairs that are body shaped, but since they are not adjustable they are not always ideal to lay on.
Service and Bar --> good.
Wifi signals --> slow.
Nightly Entertainment - When the professional dancers put on the show it was great. Also, the travelling aquatic dancers were excellent. The rock band was also good. However, the quiz show was not great (10 questions took 1 hour) and on January 6th they performed an odd Christmas show.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Good with a few issues.
Travelled jan 3-10, 2017 on Sunwing for $1001 per person. Couple with teenage kid.
Hotel is big. 1000 rooms. Lots of walking which wasn't too big of an issue for us. Pools are beautiful as is the beach. Resort was clean other than the pool washrooms. Urinals broken and not fixed all week.
Food was good and bad. A-la-carts were awesome. Best I've had in my 4 trips to Cuba. Buffets were the typical Cuban affair. Desserts were good. Fruit was limited but veggies, cheese and cold meats were [... read more]plentiful. Biggest issue was the cross contamination with raw meats (chicken and pork) and the undercooked food from some of the fresh meat servers. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU ARE PUTTING INTO YOUR MOUTH! If not you might get sick.
Snack bar by the pool was a better option.
Wifi was crap and cost 2 pesos for an hour.
Rooms were nice and modern. Clean. Water was off almost every day for a few hours so showering before supper was hit or miss as was flushing the toilet.
Overall impression, resort is newer, clean and nice but big and buffet food needs a manager to do his or her job and pay attention to what the cooks are doing.! If I can see it why don't they see it and fix it. Using the same tongs to slop a pile of raw chicken into the grill then grabbing someone's cooked pork chop and toss it into their plate with chicken juice still running off of the tongs? Common sense people!
Would I go back? Not sure. I'd probably try somewhere a bit smaller with an understanding of basic food handling rules. Overall a nice resort though.

Melia Costa Rey: Nice New Resort
Resort was beautiful, very clean. Beaches unbeatable. Could not believe how delicious the food was as I had heard stories of the food in Cuba, but it was truly great. Shows were very professional. Desk/Restaurant/Bar/Entertainment staff were top notch and very helpful. Found our favourite bar tenders (Miry & Omelio) and often congregated around that area.
Disappointments would be, room staff did not empty room garbage each day, replacement of beverages and coffee/sugar in room was hit & mi[... read more]ss. Had hotel pool towel stolen from pool chair and it cost us $20.00 cucs at the end of our stay. Especially after tipping immensely throughout our stay for every service that staff provided. Hold on to your towels or resort to theft if your towel gets taken. Pool water could have been a little warmer and an adult pool area would have been very nice.

Hotel Playa Paraiso: Pestana Cayo Coco
We travelled to the Pestana Resort on Dec 28\16 returning on Jan 7\17. We went with another couple. Since this is our second time to the resort, I sent email to reservations manager to get us in the same building. At the time of check in I was in building 3 and my friends in building 10. That wasn't going to work, they told us to come back in one hour because the rooms weren't ready. When we returned to front desk all four of us were in building 3. Once in the room the safe didn't work, which go[... read more]t fixed the next day. The water pressure for shower was low, then it got better. Some people had beach towel issues but we didn't. We went to the buffet for dinner and I noticed that the pasta cook had been removed. The pasta was so good last year when he cooked it. I was so disappointed about that. The food was very good, in buffet and the restaurants. The cookies on the desert table were fantastic. The beach is very beautiful since they made it much bigger. We got toasted on stage as it was our second time at Pestana. We had a special return guest dinner with all the returning people to Pestana, which was really nice. The New Years eve party was a blast. They went all out to bring in the new year. We met a waiter named Agusto and a waitress named Yanesly, they went out of their way to make sure our vacation was most enjoyable. They even gave us a tour of the city of Moron where they live. This was very nice of them to show us around on their day off. All the people where very nice, but those two went way far above the call of duty. The Pestana resort is very lucky to have these two hard working caring, individuals. They make you want to return to the resort every year. I can truly call these two individuals my friends now. We truly enjoyed our 10 day vacation and would definitely return to the Pestana in Cayo Coco Cuba.

Hotel Mojito: Awesome staff and nice resort!!
We enjoyed staying at Iberostar resort in Cuba. The food at the buffet was very good, we mostly had grilled meats, fish, paella, rice and beans, etc. The fruits available were fresh. Remember to check out the churros stand, best churros ever!! The staff was friendly and helpful. The beach was excellent. The housekeeper is super amazing, the room was always spotless. Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Dated, not a 4 star
Me and my had a fantastic time together without the kids but felt cheated with what we paid to go there and what we got.
The hotel is under renovation which is fine
We got an older room. The washroom was full of mold and tiny bugs on countertop. They always forget to bring toilet paper
The food is the same everyday. We ate from the grill but still the same for lunch and dinner. One side of the buffet that is supposed to be warm was cold.
A la carte restaurants are not good same food fr[... read more]om buffet serve on a plate.
Beach is nice
We were able to change beach towel only once and on the last day.
Public washrooms by the beach, pool and restaurants were closed most of the time and if opened were filthy
Pool is nice but we never swam in it. Swimup bar was closed.
The drinks were made with cheap alcohol
Spa is non-existent.
They have tennis court and basketball court without basketball rim and net.
The ground of the resort is beautiful

Hotel Playa Paraiso: Good resort, lots of potential.
We had a good team. The resort allowed for a great relaxing weekend for us.
I can't say more about the staff. We enjoyed most encounters with the staff and most just wanted to please! They don't seem to be after our tip money or clothing.. but they did appreciate it.
Unfortunately, we did not have a shower. We could take a bath but the shower hose leaked and was not hooked up on the wall. Mid way through the week, a plumber replaced the hose for the showered but did not install it [... read more]on the wall. So we were left shower less for the week... Baths were ok. Some other family mentioned having plumbing issues as well (not hot water and not toilet water for a day). Made us feel good by at least having hot water and a working toilet. ;)
The resort is not huge so it makes for a more intimate experience. The resort was fully booked and we had no problems getting chairs by the pool or at the beach. We even got the beach huts two times!
The food was good, I enjoyed it. The pizza was great, you just had to wait in line for it.
The beach was awesome.
We arrived for NYE and the staff prepared a great festivities with a bunch of goodies for all!

Hotel Playa Paraiso: Great resort....For Cuba
The hotel was clean and well maintained. The staff and Cuban people are amazing. The resort has a fantastic beach. Muthu Colonial Hotel: Total Dismay and Felt Abandoned
The Hotel was beautiful as Alway's however I was ignored , mistreated, abandoned, left out, offered no help, and due to me being legally blind severely disabled ALONE and being a WOMAN. I felt discrimination towards me daily, nightly and the " ONLY HELP EVER OFFERED " or would " HELP MYSELF " would be fellow Tourists such as British Decent, Russian and majorities of CANADIAN HELPERS. I went 4 day's with NO FOOD. The Front desk ALWAY'S would say " Okay my friend. Someone come see you now " Well "[... read more] SOMEONE " NEVER CAME " EVER!!! The Manager " TITO " seen me eventually after I split my head open on the bathroom cement floor and blood witnessed by Staff, Tourists and another Employee " Breanna " as I stitched my head up MYSELF with a sewing kit. I would NEVER RECOMMEND a WOMAN travelling ALONE especially if SEVERELY DISABLED AND BLIND or even if someone ALONE is hoping for RESPECT, GUIDANCE and CURTICY. DO NOT " GO ANYWHERE IN CUBA " I NEVER FELT so " HUMILIATED, EMBARRASSED, HATE, HUNGER AND COMPLETELY ABANDONED in my WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE ". SUNWAY'S AIRFLIGHT SERVICES were also a NIGHTMARE as documentations of both of my flights I MISSED and I had to take LATER FLIGHTS, due to " THEIR ERROR'S " as once AGAIN there was ABSOLUTELY " NO HELP WHATSOEVER " in order for me, Ann Frances MacDonald to get my baggage checked in, obtain my plane ticket, as I sat in my wheelchair in line and listened to EVERY SINGLE PERSON pass me by and board the Airplane as I, Ann Frances MacDonald kept asking " EXCUSE ME, IS THERE ANYWAY SOMEONE COULD HELP ME WHEN YOU ARE ABLE? I AM ALONE AND WOULD GRATEFULLY ACCEPT ANY AND ALL HELP POSSIBLE ". The result of my many countless cry's for HELP were " ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ". The questions that I ask my family and friends now that I am back in Canada and I feel like I never got away in the 1st place is...." WHY "? Why was I treated so poorly? " WHY "?????????? Quite frankly I NEVER would have believed all of this myself. Especially after this being my 11th time travelling to what I use to think of as my 2nd HOME " CUBA ". Sincerely yours, Ann Frances MacDonald. Best Wishes Always. XOXOXXO

Hotel Vigia: A great beach, but resort is falling apart
We went just before Christmas, so I guess we should have expected the wind. After all, the wind is what makes this a kiteboarders' paradise. The water is shallow going out pretty far.
The resort is not that good. Half of it is deserted and falling to bits. Our room was good though. The food was bad, even by Cuban standards. One had to rummage through the grey and brown bits to find something worth eating. Mostly survived on omelette. We had one day when there was no beer anywhere in the resort.[... read more] Now that is pretty scary.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Some Good Some Bad
The pool areas were lovely as were the rooms themselves an the beach but service and food were not good. There was poor food quality and taste and ridiculous waits to book a la carte dinners even when the restaurants were half empty. Still waited over 1/2 hour with reservations.
