Roc Barlovento: Great Value for Money, Lovely Resort.
There are many reviews around on other websites so I don't want to repeat too much but I would like to say first off that the staff and this resort in general really do everything they can to give you a good time, it is not the hotels fault or staff if you're not in the mood for whatever that day... They put in 110%. The staff work extremely hard and the resort is a credit to that.
The buffet was plentiful and the food was good, sometimes it was even great. The coffee was fabulous. Rooms w[... read more]ere clean, air conditioning was great and the water pressure and temperature of the shower was much better than home.
Beach was A*, pool area was wonderful. Seemed to be all new sun shades around the pool area, very nice quality.
We went on some nice well priced trips organized initially by the lovely lady that sits in the lobby at the tour desk daily.
Entertainment was beyond amazing, the Magic Show and the Aqua Ballet especially. But the 'in house' entertainment was also very good.
Great position for the Market, Atm and bank in the other direction only a few minutes walk.
This hotel was at the beginning of Varadero so therefore not in the thick of tourist central but felt very safe and lots to see and do.

Roc Barlovento: Lovely people, great customer service but average resort
The hotel was average, needs a lot of work in places. Food was good for Cuban standards! Beautiful beach and great staff who were always happy to help! The third pool was supposed to be open when we got to the resort but wasn't which was a little disappointing.

Roc Barlovento: Nice Resort
The Resort is Nice. Very Peaceful and Quiet. The Beach is Amazing. Very Calm. Not a lot of people so you always have a lounge chair. Staff is nice. Rooms & Bathroom need to be upgraded. Food and Drinks were alright. Nightly entertainment is good. A pool bar would be nice and a cerveza would be nice to have at the bar at the beach.

Starfish Cayo Largo: Not bad.
Off season, so I don't expect much.
Looks like the supply boat didn't come in for the first 3 days, so no cheese for the pizzeria, and no fresh fruit or veggies. But I don't go to Cuba for the food.
Really dumb evening shows, or maybe I'm just getting old. Or maybe it's because I really liked the band, as I have other bands I've seen in other parts of Cuba, and we wondered why they didn't just do a concert so we could dance.
Some OK table service, and then some pretty bad table servi[... read more]ce (like, "you're fired" kind of service"). I guess it's something you have to learn somewhere and Cuba isn't the best place? Of course, the life of a server on Cayo Largo probably sucks big time.
I go for the diving and the music. They don't disappoint.

Hotel Villa Cuba: Nice and sweet
Hotel was small. Room was decent but there were cockroaches and the drain system was terrible. The bath tub took forever to drain. And our toilet got clogged twice. Which was very disgusting. Food was 4/10.

Roc Barlovento: Mediocre experience I would rate this hotel as more of a 2.5/3 stars, not 3.5, based on our experience!
I would rate this hotel a 2.5/3 stars, not 3.5 based on our experience! Here's why:
BEACH:
The beach was infested with sand ants so you couldn't lounge on the beach. You had to run from the ocean to the poolside to avoid getting bitten! It was very frustrating and not enjoyable at all if you enjoying sitting on the beach to read/lounge. No opportunity to dry off except if you didn't mind standing along the shoreline where the waves come in to air dry a little. You definitely needed some [... read more]footwear while walking (...no, hustling) along the white sand. We brought lots of Deet so we were good. There is a plane that passes overhead to help keep the mosquitos at bay.
The water was a gorgeous turquoise color, that was cooler in the mornings but got very warm in the afternoon. It only rained one day, but June is theit tropical storm season. The rain typically lasts only for about 15min intervals.
FOOD:
As for the food, it was mediocre - same items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Wanted to reserve the Sushi bar but it's only available Monday evenings - would have liked to have known that beforehand. Then reserved the Mexican restaurant for Sunday dinner for 7pm, as it was the only availability. When we arrived it was closed the whole day with no sign of setting up. We went to the Concierge to inquire, who seemed surprised. She called the restaurant and was told it had been switched to another option "upstairs". We opted out and just went to the buffet instead. No surprise as to what was on the menu - leftovers from breakfast and lunch! Too bad as I think it would have been a nice experience.
The cappuccino machine in the restaurant was broken for 2 days so you had to get your coffee from the bar to bring with you to the buffet. The area for the ROC Plus seating never felt the AC so it was a miss sitting there! The 24-hr bartenders were very friendly and the housekeeping staff was very nice too. The Concierge was always ready to help!
The Beach Bar was never open during the daytime when we wanted something to eat so that was annoying. We had to hustle to the buffet, assuming it was during their operating hours.
AMENITIES:
On Sunday afternoon I purchased a small painting from Sili, the artist, and it was beautiful - freshly painted as it was still drying! (LOL!). I left it in my room to air dry some more and I loved it! Small ones are 10 CUC's and the large are 25 CUC's. The market down the street was great and we went twice! There was an annoying beggar who didn't want to take NO for an answer so we finally left. Too bad for that, though. There are cats around the site and they love meat, so don't bother with bread. I guess a carb-free diet helps keep them lean and trim! They are so cute!!
ROOM:
There are no screens on the sliding doors so you can't open the door for fresh air if you don't want mosquitos or ants getting in. That was a disappointment as we prefer to have the window open and AC off at night to enjoy the tropical breeze.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Good stay but could've been better
Our stay was good with a few inconveniences. The hotel operations were moved from the prestige side to the main hotel mid week, however the main pool was still closed and we had to make with the smaller one, therefore we were not able to enjoy it. The service was great and the food good; I would however recommend that the food could be covered at the restaurant due to flies.

Club Kawama: fair
we liked the location, the people that work for the resort are very friendly. The food was fair, but the desert table was great,
Was a little disappointed about our room, especially the beds. My bed had a dip in the bottom have of the bed, and they did not do anything about it. so that was a little uncomfortable., also the cleaning of our room.
We did find that the people at the front desk were not honest especially with the exchange of money. It happened to us but also to many other people.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: ANOTHER GREAT WEEK
Have been to this area a number of times and it seems every time we go they have made changes for the better. The staff here were great and kept the resort looking good, the gardens and the common areas are very well kept to bad some of the guests don't seem to have the decency to pick up after themselves. It's really not hard to pick up your

Roc Barlovento: great place
this hotel more than met my expectations. Rooms were basic ( its Cuba ) but very clean. My maid Alina was wonderful, good English, very helpful and a pleasure to get to know. All staff except for maybe the ladies at receiption went out of their way to make my stay a good one. I am a senior lady and travelled alone without ever having concern for my safety or wellbeing in this area of Cuba. If you like spicey food you aren`t going to get it but what is there is very good, lots of selection and [... read more]plentiful. Take bug spray there`s mossies and sand fleas ,but if you spray yourselves its not a problem. Great resort, great weather, great beach, wonderful people what more do you want.

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Excellent Potential but Greatly Disappointed
The Hotel itself is nice. It's has a beautiful beach and close access to the inland waterways (channels, mangroves, fishing, snorkelling and Kayaking opportunities).
Our disappointments were brought on by the following:
1) Upon arrival we learned that 3/4 of the hotel had been closed. The open section was a 5-10 min walk from the main lobby in what would, under normal circumstances, be the Adults only section. We were given a couple of reasons for the main section being closed...slow seaso[... read more]n...renovations. Because of this closure, many of the activities that we specifically chose this hotel for, were unavailable. No Kayaks, pedal boats, sail boats, scooters or car rentals. Additionally, many of the shops, bars and restaurants were closed. This type of situation should be communicated prior to arrival giving guests the opportunity to opt out.
2) On the morning of our 2nd day, the water supply to the entire resort shutoff. We were told it would be back up and running in an hour. This did not happen. The water was off for 4 days coming on sporadically for maybe an hour on three of the days and on the 4th day it came back on fully but only at a trickle and without enough pressure to make it to the shower head..Every time the water would come on, some other issue with the supply system would break down. Each day we enquired and each day we were told the same thing...back on in 30 mins or 1.5 hours etc etc...Again, communication is the key here. We felt like we were just being given lip service to get us to go away. Management of this resort needs to be forthcoming with their clientele. It was obvious that they knew this was a major issue...we should have been moved to another resort shortly after this issue began. There was no assistance by management for guests. At a minimum, provide buckets of water to each room to flush toilets instead of leaving us to our own devices. We had to carry the garbage can from our room to the pool and back to flush the toilet. Days without shaving or showering the ever accumulating bug spray, sweat and sunscreen, not to mention the deterioration of sanitary conditions at the resort...no fresh towels, no means to do laundry or wash dishes, common area toilets not being flushed and piling up. Atrocious odours prevailing.
3) Food - We found the food to be quite good. The issue was that without water, how were things being cleaned. The bar had a bucket of water in the sink. Glasses were being used, rinsed in the buck then but back on the shelf for re-use. Witnessed a plate being dried with a dish cloth, worker using the same cloth to wipe their forehead, then continuing to dry. As a result of the aforementioned dwindling sanitary conditions, we did not eat well after the first two days limiting to things that we deemed safe such as packaged food and or bananas and the like.
4) Atmosphere...This again is as a result of the above conditions. What would normally be friendly discussions in the common areas turned in to none stop complaining. Most of the guest were booked through Sunwing and were moved to another resort. We were not moved and are in the process of seeking compensation.
5) Bug bites during sleep. A common problem among the guests. Again a source of many complaints around the common areas. Through research, the bites appear to be from sand fleas. May be a result of poor cleaning of rooms? Had to wear bug spray to bed. Many repeat guests to Cuba, some that had been there over 40 times, said they have never experienced this condition. Several sought medical aid due to adverse reactions.
6) Other items that were a nuisance but not the contributing factors to our miss-content. Refrigerator didn't work in room. Reported but nothing done. Shower head bracket support broke and curtain rod came down. Reported and it was repaired. A lot of garbage visible in areas surrounding the resort.
In conclusion, management communication and professionalism is lacking at this resort. Staff in general were very friendly and inviting. This place has the potential to be very nice. The word on the street is that ownership of this resort has changed hands several times in recent history. Customer service does not appear to be a high priority. A lot of beer being funnelled into the kitchen and off to staff in empty 1.5 L pop bottles and other large open containers. I would not return here without significant proof of improvements.
This resort felt like going home. This was our second trip to Cuba and I was very surprised when many of the staff remembered my husband right away and when they looked at me they noticed that I had lost weight and told me how wonderful I looked and would tell me over and over how beautiful I looked and for a woman who will be 60 in October it made me feel wonderful. Our trip was from April 30-May 7. My reason for those dates was because on May 2 was the 5th year passing of my daughter and a[... read more]ll the staff knew this and the staff were all so kind to me and the rep with Sun wing was so kind to me that I could never thank her enough. She found a Church that my husband went to on May the 2nd so that we could pray and speak with the priest. The Sun wing rep also helped use make plans about taking 2 trips that were awesome and will recommend to everyone I know who are thinking about going to Cuba. Our room was clean and large. The only thing that went wrong was that the AIT condigitioner stopped willing on Wed. evening and was not repaired until Friday. And they offered us a new room on Friday evening just before the conditioner was fixed. The most wonderful thing I have to say is just how awesome all the staff were to us and we have already decided to go back to Cuba and we will go back to Club Kawama next year. We willbr in contacted with our travel agent Carol Webber again next year.

Club Kawama: You get what you pay for.
This was our third trip to Kawama. We knew what to expect at this resort. The staff are nice, we booked a superior room. The room was ok, we had a big balcony. The cleanliness with house keeping can be improved on. There were a lot of locals staying at the resort. We are aware that locals do get to stay at the resorts. The issues with this is that the tourists were left without a place to sit and eat their meals. The food is typical Cuban food.It was basically the same daily. The section we were [... read more]staying in which consits of superior rooms was taken up by the locals, we only seen two other rooms being occupied by tourists. Checkout time is at 12pm. They offer you a complementary room to freshing up before your flight, each person gets 20mins and they do not provide towels. We enjoyed this resort in the pass, but our saying now is we are Kawama'd out. For those that are going to Cuba for the first time. You should not have any kind of liquid going through their customs. They sell alcohol at the air port before you go through customs. Do not purchase any, they will sell it to you and then take it from you. They won't tell you the difference, they are making money and then getting their product back from you. You can purchase the alcohol, cigars or tobacco in the Duty free shops after you go through customs. They also take your lighters from you, make sure to bring matches in your carry on, not a lighter. We seen a lot of upset tourist when we were waiting for our flight.

Roc Barlovento: for a 3 1/2 star hotel ..it was good
the grounds were very nice and well maintained. The maid service left something to be desired. The food was quite good ,,but repetitive. Overall, we would not hesitate to go back. The dining room waiters were excellent and the bar service was very good. The Mexican ala carte dining room was not Mexican and the food was not very good. The Mediterean restaurant was much better.
