Food was better than we expected & the beach is fabulous. Average room we booked was not acceptable; we changed the next day to an ocean-view & were very happy. The Cuban people are wonderful; friendly & helpful.

Melia Cayo Coco: Well run resort
Rooms were clean if a little dated. Staff was very helpful and friendly. After one particularly heavy rainfall there was water dripping from a bathroom light fixture and toilet kept running after flushing.
Food was ok but not greatest variety and meat was poor quality; however, ok for Cuban standards. After 9 am you can forget about finding an available lounge around the pool as all are being reserved for the day with guest towels or personal items contrary t posted rules. Entertainment and acti[... read more]vities are first class as is the staff. Fitness room is good and underused.
Overall experience was good but would not stay more than 7 days.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Slow reponse time, Dangerous conditions
Over all the hotel was very warn for wear after only one year. Lights werent working. Staff was over all unimpressive. Rooms were clean but beds were rock hard. A la Carte Restaurants were horrible, the buffet was acceptable. Entertainment staff were good. Bar servers felt intitled... If you didnt show up with cash in hand for a tip they took forever to serve. Frontline staff did not speak enough english for a conversation and when attempting to speak spanish they could nor understand me. Our bu[... read more]ngalow was without hall lights the entire trip, we needed to have our cell phone lights on to find our rooms. After 5 straight days of reporting this the lights finally came one during the day but turned off at 11pm. The spa room was completely overpriced $35cuc for a 30 reflexology treatment although the treatment was excellent - all you could hear was the kareoke happening at the pool. It was not reflective of a spa environment. Overall extremly dissappointed with the service, accommodations and food, at the resort but as always Cuba sun and beach were netter than a week of winter.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Not bad, poor weather didn't help
First of all, not the resorts fault, but it rained every single day we were there. Total of about 3 hours of sun for 7 days.
Food was pretty good for Cuba (minus the terrible tasting bacon). the al la carte's were very good.
Major problem with drainage. With all of the rain, the pathways were completely turned into deep huge puddles that you had no choice but to walk through. In sandals it was okay but night time in dress shoes and my girlfriends heels, it was extremely frustrating. Lighting w[... read more]as also very poor at night and required a flash light to see.
The room was nice; also great water pressure in the shower. The king bed was very hard and not the most comfortable.
The service was just okay. I'm in the customer service industry so I have very high standards. It took forever to get drinks some times. The bartenders never seemed to be in a hurry and they would not even make contact with you. So you would be standing at the bar and feel invisible waiting to order. Tips were not as much appreciated as they were EXPECTED..
The pool and grounds were nice and well maintained.
Overall just an average experience and I would not return nor recommend to friends.

Sol Cayo Santa Maria: Needs a refresh, but still good
My first thought was "this place needs a coat a paint and some new fixtures", but it grew on me. Overall, this is a good place for the price.
If you have not stayed on Cayo Santa Maria, you should know: it is 90 minutes from the airport. Just getting to the mainland is a 50km drive on the causeway. That means if you want to do something off resort other than the dolphin show or the shopping "village", you are going to have a long drive. If you're looking for action, go elsewhere; if you want to[... read more] relax on the beach or at the pool, this is the place!
Rooms:
The rooms are decent-sized, with a big balcony (a plus when the kids go to bed early!).
If you are a family of four, I recommend asking for two extra cots/beds. The "double" size bed is not really double. Our kids are still small, so we managed fine with just one extra cot.
The beds are hard and the pillows, well, not very pillow-y. But after playing in the sun all day, we hardly noticed.
Resort:
As stated above, the resort needs a bit of a refresh. Nothing is horrible, just a little dated. It seems like some of that is in progress - there was a crew painting the beach restaurant; and another group going around with clipboards taking notes of things that were obviously in need of repair. In another year, my comments may not hold true anymore!
The pool and pool area is huge with a decent amount of lounge chairs around. I wish they cleaned the pool a little more often since the palm trees around tend to shed leaves into the water, but it's not a big deal.
Staff:
The staff was amazing, especially with the kids!
Entertainment:
We didn't really partake in most since the kids were in bed early.
Food:
At the buffet, the food was plentiful, with a good amount of selection; and at least part of the menu was rotated. At every meal, there was an option for something prepared fresh - omelettes/crepes, fresh pasta, fried rice, and a selection of meats and fish cooked right in front of you. Lunch and dinner usually had a roast of some kind - turkey, pork, beef, etc.. There was usually pizza and pasta available for picky kids.
The pizza/pasta restaurant (Los Flamencos? - on the West side of the resort) is open for lunch and makes a good pizza!
My only complaint about food is a lot of it tends to be overcooked. I assume this is a food safety thing. On the bright side, with the fresh grilled meat/fish option, you can tell the staff when to take it off the grill.

This resort is located on a lovely beach, and only 10 minutes from the airport. It provides good value for the budget minded traveler. Buffet food was good, but repetitive. Room was out-dated and requires work in the bathroom, notably caulking around the tub. Staff friendly and helpful.

This was a wonderful resort. The staff was always friendly and they had nightly entertainment and always tried to get people involved with poolside/ ocean side activities. The food is good my only complaint would be that it is fairly repetitive at the buffet. Sol Rio de Luna y Mares: Great 1st Trip to Cuba
Based on what I've typically heard of Cuban hotels and food, I wanted to adjust my expectations before going on this trip and simply go with the purpose to take in and enjoy/appreciate the beauty of the people, the land, and of course the beautiful beaches. Upon arrival to Sol Rio, I was very pleasantly surprised. As we checked in and headed off to discover our surroundings for the next few days we continued to take it all in and were happy with our selection.
Hotel: it is true, the building and[... read more] rooms could use of some TLC, a fresh coat of paint would do wonders for this place, however aside from this I'd say the grounds were very nicely groomed and landscaped, and overall the layout of the resort was well distributed. Our room was in the Mares section, which I liked because there was almost always more lively than the Luna section, but because the whole resort is connected you can hang out in which ever areas you prefer or are in the mood for.
Food: We found there was always a good variety of food, and enough selection that will make everyone happy. The food wasn't bland, but nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't fix if you needed it. Our favorite a la cart restaurant was the French, but we only tried 3 of the 6 or so available. I do not recommend the Mexican restaurant although the location it self was nice overlooking the pool and views to the beach.
Overall: Give it a try, go with an open mind. Cuba does not have all the resources you are accustomed too, but the whole purpose of visiting a new country is to get a feel for the tastes and cultural flavors of that region and its people. Immerse yourself and consider that despite any blandness you may find in the food, it is still better than what the workers have to enjoy on a daily basis. So be appreciative and respect what this country has to offer and immerse yourself in the lush beaches, countryside and warm friendly faces.

Starfish Cayo Largo: Ok but lots if room for improvement
Let me start that I have been to Cuba 7 times now, so with that said We Love Cuba.
The good part of the resort is if course the beaches they are all really nice, white sugary sand and crystal clear waters. This resort was the same.
This was the first and last time I'll go to Cayo Largo but plan to go to Cuba mainland again.
This resort was small but very nice and clean, rooms were clean as well. Although asked to have our bed stripped as the sheets didn't look clean at all. Looks like someone had[... read more] slept in it at least a night or 2 as there was sand etc in the sheets! Spoke to the maid and she said ok I'll do for FREE!
Well I hope so as this is the job you do, so with that she did a great job although she used the same mattress cover as the one I took off had a cigarette burn in it. Anyways we gave her a nice tip the next morning.
The resort it self needs some TLC but Iam sure this will happen now since Memories has just taken it over, which is why I believe the rest of the issues happened.
The Cuban people that work there rant as friendly as the ones on the mainland if Cuba. They also had very little English speaking Cubans. This resort seems to have 99.9 % of the visitors come from Montreal and rude wow it's embarrassing!! The workers would speak to us in French automatically and I would correct and say NO English! We would ask a question in English and they would answer us in French! If Iam speaking English I would expect you to answer me in English not French what's with that. Very frustrating after a fee days. Other employees would ignore you completely, like we were invisible ! Very disappointing! This happened to all of us on many occasions.
The most friendly person was Victor in the buffet. He was wonderful and we tipped him nicely everyday for his efforts.
The main bar at night was a night mare if you have epilepsy run before disco starts as the stove light in there is meant for a large room not the tiny room and caused many to feel dizzy as it was so intense. The poor bartenders are so over worked in that bar. There sometimes was only one bartender for the 600 people that were crammed into this what we called everything room.
This resort doesn't have a large enough gathering area, all the resort we have been too have large main bar areas with lots of seating etc and more than one poor bartender.
I read the trip advisor reviews and though this resort was perfect. But in actual fact we were approached by one of the night time entertainers (same thing every night for the show) he came up and said can't you give us a good review on the trip advisor and we said we will see. And he put his hands together like praying and a sad face and a tear as his English was more French/ Cuban than anything. So this explains all the so called great reviews. Well I won't be bribed to say things. So this is my honest option of this resort.
Also the food was fine other than they ran out of most food like Fries but they had potatoes and ketchup but said they had no fries. They were none existent since we arrived which I found odd as we saw them peel potatoes everywhere. Every resort I have been to always had fries. They ran out of lots if stuff, they did have bacon but they don't seem to know how to cook bacon, it was almost raw but you could stand in the lineup and have it put on the grill, the toaster needs to be replaced you could stand in line and wait for a long time as even putting the bread in the toaster 5 times didn't toast it. Just made the bread hard and not cooked. Crazy!
Other than these issues, we made the best of it. We are not high maintenance
people and we have all travelled to Cuba many many times.
If I can give anyone any advice I would say DON'T go to this resort maybe wait and see what happens once Memories has taken it over and had time to get it ship shape.
Glad to come home for the first time
ever from Cuba!
I recommend going to Varadero,Cayo coco or Holgin. Been to each if these places 2 times and would go back again and plan on it.
Another thing don't go to the playa or Serena beaches the one at the Pelicano resort is better and free to get there. Don't pay the taxi guy for both directions as he jammed 14 people in a van an took you on a sand road that was extramly rough and we flew over a bump and our friend hit his head on the roof and hurt his back and neck, his wife also had whiplash, very scary ride to a beach that was less appealing than the one at the resort. The resort beach was cleaned up this one was not. 2 poor dolphins trapped in a small area that must have wanted out as they had wounds in them that they put oniment on. Felt terrible for them.
We just turned around and paid another taxi to take us back.
Not recommending this little trip.

Melia Las Dunas: A memorable holiday
When the guy we spoke to at Trip Central recommended Melia Las Dunas, I was initially not very keen because it was more expensive than several others. But now that I have returned, I can assert with confidence that it is an excellent resort and fully worth the money. The unit we were assigned had an ocean view. The beach was great and better than at Varadero. Also, the food was excellent with plenty to choose from. The service was also very good. The only downside is the long bus ride from the a[... read more]irport to the hotel at night in the dark. May be Sunwing should consider adding an earlier flight. Despite this, on balance, we are so happy that we chose this resort and are thinking of going back to the same resort next year.

Melia Cayo Coco: More than we ever expected!
When first arriving at this resort you are greeted by some of the friendliest people you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. We got our bags out of the bus and proceeded to the lobby. We checked in with Angel who was quick and thorough. Provided us with everything we needed and even a welcome cocktail. Our bags were loaded into a golf cart and were escorted to our lagoon room with a tour of the resort on the way.
When entering our room it was wide open, clean and beautiful. We had an amazin[... read more]g view of the landscape. In the morning we were engaged with the rising sun right from our balcony. We sat with our fresh coffee and chatted as the sun came over the horizon. Being our one year wedding anniversary we needed to make it special. With this being an adults only resort it was quiet with just enough of night life to keep you having fun all day and night. From the cabaret to nightly music in the lobby we were never let down.
The three a la carte restaurants were elegant and the food was fantastic. There is a beach restaurant during the day that has cooked to serve meats and vegetables while you wait and a buffet to match. The beach went on for miles as we walked it each and every day. There was never a dull moment for our 7 day stay. We plan on returning. Thanks Melia and staff for making our anniversary shine. If I could add pictures of our trip I surely would.

The beach was beautiful . No issues getting chairs or shade area's if need be . restaurants were all very good for Cuba .Disco and entertainment was wonderful Rooms are dated and are in need of repairs But very clean . The buffet was the only complaint , very repetitive they need to change it up occasionally . Lineup 's for pasta bar and meat station were 20-30 minutes nightly . they need to find a better solution to accommodate the many guests that choose to dine at the buffet .
