Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Home away from home
Grounds & Puplic areas are well looked after & clean
Room is made up every day & cleaned
Main buffet restaurant and 2 ala cart food is good but you can’t be choosy.
You eat what is available
It is still a nice hotel for that price.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Holguin: Total disappointment
Stayed here from Jan.25th to Feb.1st. Good size room and the maid did a good job cleaning it, except for the AC that was extremely cold (unable to adjust temperature).
Pool and grounds looked very clean. Stuff are very friendly..reason why we keep going back to Cuba. Food and drinks are not our primary reason to go to Cuba, but after around 20 visits, this was BY far the worst. No bread the first 3 days, no eggs all week, no wine all week, except for the specialty restaurants,(not Italian). Ver[... read more]y small buffet for the amount of guests, extremely poor selection of fruit, salads and main course meals. Sanctuary buffet only had very few limited items, you would have to grab the rest from from other buffet. Employes seemed overworked and tired, and most of the time only one waiter working at Sanctuary bar. I was recommended by Tripalcenter to read the warnings about Cuba shortages, but this was way to much. Sanctuary Grand Memories Holguin please don't rate yourselves 5 star.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Holguin: Beautiful resort
I must say the resort was absolutely beautiful very modernized and well maintained! They gardens very much lush , but I was a little disappointed with the beach lots of seaweed. They did have workers raking everyday though. I’m just not a seaweed person, otherwise it was amazing. My disappointment for this resort was I paid for adults only which provided butler service, you had to contact your butler if you wanted to speak to them . I have been to the same chain Sanctuary in Cayo Santa Maria whe[... read more]re your butler was on your floor everyday and booked your à la cart for you and answered any questions you may have had . Their service was much more professional and personal!!!! Food was okay a la carts were very good ! Entertainment well let just say there wasn’t much of any , you had to go to the family side to engage which was just a bunch of dancing, the other resort had games and a lot of interaction! Would I go to this resort again ? Maybe but I’d would definitely go back to Santa Maria in a heartbeat!!!! Not worth the money I spent for an adult’s only .

Gran Muthu Almirante Beach Resort: The shortages are real
Nice grounds, very clean which was great. The beach is the nicest I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen lots of beaches! Big rooms.
This was my sixth time to Cuba so I thought I knew what to expect … nope. Very lacking now (post-pandemic). Food is minimal. You can tell corners are being cut, which is scary. No fries, pizza only some days .. I have a toddler so I was sort of banking on those things. Meal times are way too late. A la cartes restaurants were easy to get into and very good, so that was [... read more]a nice treat. The only fruit at the resort was watermelon, pineapple, papaya and sometimes these orange-grapefruit things. NO BANANAS even though they have them at the juice bar. BRING SNACKS. We had about 1/2 suitcase just snacks, and that almost wasn’t enough. If you have an early bus ride to airport the day you leave, they don’t open the kitchen early, so you’ll need to plan for that (bring ziplock bags to bring cheese, bread from dinner the night before). Also, it’s weird but spoons are hard to come by. They think guests are going to steal them for locals. There’s no food for sale on the resort and no snacks at the airport so seriously, bring snacks.
The rooms have no washcloths, which is weird. If you’re from Canada, bring a power converter since your hair dryer, other appliances won’t work (the voltage there is too high). (iPhone chargers are compatible since they are sold the same way everywhere.) The fire alarm went off CONSTANTLY and it was so loud and jarring. Our power also kept going off, which was super annoying. It turned off the air conditioning, and my daughter’s noise machine, and kept making the lights go on and off. Just a nuisance. Our TV (which we had never used) also shorted out.
The pool was cold but luckily the ocean was warm. Beach chairs - they get reserved / scooped up in the morning early then if you want one later they have a stash of them you can pay $1/chair for. My husband got bit by some sort of sand flea, his feet went red and blotchy and he said they felt burning and very itchy. It lasted days. No one else we were with was impacted.
Tip in CAD, no need to change your money to USD for tips.
Cleaning staff work hard but it doesn’t seem like anyone else really is. The workers in the restaurant are hovering over you to take away finished plates but not to ask about drinks or anything else. Lobby bar is not well-organized or well-staffed and is constantly lined up and slow.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Needs Work
This is our 4th time there the grounds are still beautiful. The villa we stayed in was ok however the bathroom needs work. I prefer the bungalows. The buffet: I found a piece of wire in my mashed pumpkin which could have turned out very dangerous. It looked like it was from a bbq brush or something like that. The service at the beach restaurant was terrible I had to ask for our menus after sitting there for 15 minutes or more. Then I had to find the waitress to order our food. And they didn’t[... read more] bring our dessert that we had ordered. The manager seemed in distress because the waitresses just left. The service every where else was fantastic in the restaurants, the pool bar (Lorenzo) and the pool restaurant (Leo). The lobby bar very good service as well. The entertainment was very nice loved the violinist!! We will give this resort another try and then decide from there if we will continue to come here.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: A Lovely Week
This trip was our third experience in Holguin, and we have stayed at a different hotel with each visit. This hotel is a strong 3, but has the heart of a 5. It is tired but clean and they are working on restorations. The value could not be beat!
We were in a villa #5112, with an ocean view. Our room just fine and the bed was very comfortable. The linens were thick and white, not dingy as can happen.
Meals were better than most people here or there eat on a daily basis. Repetitive yes, if you’r[... read more]e not creative. We managed a different combination of choices for most meals. If this doesn’t sit well with you, go someplace else. I will miss the banana chips.
Always had a pleasant experience at the ground floor bar and at Cafe Ashley.
Groundskeepers were busy daily as winds blew in fresh fallen vegetation daily. Staff always said hello as they passed by and the front seat was always approachable. Our housekeeper was lovely and thoughtful.
We loved being able to walk to the length of all three hotels along this strip of beach. In the afternoon, with low tide; we could walk in the water, from end to end, and get a great workout. The waters were breathtaking and the best so far in Holguin, in my opinion. Since we can’t fight Mother Nature, i can’t be disappointed about the fact that there is little reef left in front of the hotel. This made for a little less than interesting snorkelling. But it was a curious expedition every time.
I have two complaints and they are about tourist who behave badly. Tourists who think that they are entitled to smoke in any part of the resort despite No Smoking signs; and to litter both on the resort and on the beach. It’s sad and makes us all look bad.
This vacation was true value and I would return. Thank you to all the lovely staff at Club Amigo?

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Great resort
We went to this resort the second time as we already liked it the first time. It has good internet, a nice beach with some cliff sections on the side that are great for snorkelling, really friendly staff, and good rooms. I know many complain about food, but we even had some great food. There is currently some shortage like eggs and even sometimes bred, but I think what they do with the rest was even better than last year and healthy. We ate a lot of cabbage/carrot/... salad, had wonderful scollo[... read more]ps and some excellent fish (I love fish, and some of the fish was truly amazing). We also enjoyed some of the soups, and if you bring some of your own seasoning then you can eat well for a week. And the fresh coconut were so good. Thanks you all the staff for your smiles.

Iberostar Selection Holguin: Sunwing Rep & Doctors are unethical!
Customer service is really good at this hotel. You can be driven anywhere within the hotel grounds and even be driven to the good part of the beach. The beach front pictured in the display pictures is only good until about noon, then it turns into a shallow green lagoon. You’ll have to go over the bridge to the part of the beach where you can enjoy free water sports. They have staff there that will pull chairs out for you. If you don’t get a ride to that part of the beach it can be maybe a 5-6mi[... read more]n walk to your room. The grounds are massive. They have so many golf carts rolling around so you’ll eventually hitch a ride.
The staff are courteous, professional & kind. We can’t complain about them whatsoever. The staff are very nice to kids and visually genuine about it. The lady who books al la carte is very shady. We arrived Tuesday and saw her immediately Wednesday. She told us everything was booked and we could only enjoy one restaurant. We spoke to another family on the beach and they advised you’ve got to tip her and she will magically have additional restaurant spots. The Al la carte we did go to, Mediterranean, was good.. but empty. Not sure how they could be sooooo full.
Hotel rooms are clean. The women that maintain them are great. If you leave them a tip they’ll make designs with the towels. If you don’t, just a simple little design with the bed throw. Room is still very clean and lots of towels. You get two glass bottles sealed with a piece of sticker of water. The water is different. When it’s cold it’s a bit easier to drink. It isn’t what we’re used to in Canada so it is a bit rough. Other guests were spending upwards of $50-$60 USD for a case of bottled water a taxi driver would go and get. Tips get you anything and everything. Word of advice, coins are not helpful to the staff. Tip them Canadian bills and not Halloween chocolate.. (fine people of Quebec, I saw what you guys were doing.. embarassing behaviour) Beach sports, same deal. You’ll have to sign up to get a spot.. however if you tip, miraculously you can head out on them whenever you want- ask for a guy named “uzmoney”, he will go out with you immediately for about $5/$10- he will bring bread and you’ll be able to see the most beautiful colourful fish. He will stay out long with you too. It’s worth the experience. When the guys have had enough taking people out on them.. they’ll claim wind is too strong or the rescue boat is gone. Usually around 2pm. Don’t sign up for anything after 2, just give them $5 and you’ll get on. They have a tiny little bar on the beach, it’s good. No complaints about the beach at all.. (and I’m talking about the one over the long bridge) watch your stuff on that part of the beach. There are locals hanging out in the bushes. They try to beg at first for your kids’ stuff then they start getting rude that their kids need it more than yours. Listen, we’re all for helping but I’m not about to give you sand toys and the bathing suit on my kids body. Too pushy.
Food was ok. We aren’t picky people. They have lots of bread. We didn’t have any eggs the entire week. No bananas? Odd. People went on tours in the villages and there were banana trees. It’s hard to believe the hotel can’t source fresher fruit? I think whoever owns the hotel needs to come and take a look at what the dining experience is like. The food was very repetitive. Lunch and dinner in the buffet were better than breakfast. After a while it was getting a bit hard to find something for breakfast. They had one day of thin bacon, after that it was this pink thick fatty bacon.. that no matter how long it cooked.. it was still kinda raw. You won’t starve at this hotel. You’ll find something to eat. They have chicken breast they cut in thin slices everyday on the grill. Literally, everyday. Lots of deli meat. They have 2 panini makers and 2 toasters so you can make a nicer sandwich. Bring CONDIMENTS!!! Bring ketchup, mayo, peanut butter, salad dressing. Honestly, bring it. DO NOT THINK TWICE.. We brought bags of chips and snacks in our luggage too. It’s important, trust me!!!
A separate and concerning experience I’d like to share. We had a very shady experience with the Sunwing rep and the “doctors”. Our daughter had a very bad fever Saturday night. We contacted Sunwing to change our flight (we were supposed to fly out Tuesday). That Saturday night someone left a note at our door to see our shady Sunwing rep at 9:00am. His name is Norge. When we saw him, he told us that we had to go see the doctors on site in order to be cleared to fly. I asked him how much that would cost and he said he didn’t know. He said had we came to see him first and if we didn’t call Sunwing directly, we wouldn’t have to see the doctor. Immediately I thought, shady. He tells us there are flights that day at 10pm (Sunday). So we go to see these two women, one is the “doctor” and one is the “nurse”. They were sitting outside like a bunch of slobs. We greet them. The nurse looks at our daughter, grabs her arm, looks at the inside part of her arm and says.. “yes.. very sick”. Right away we knew.. this is going to be a joke. We walk into the office, it was filthy. They stuck a dirty, probably used, popsicle stick in her mouth to see her throat. At no point did they wear gloves or wash their hands. They tell me her throat is red. Only the nurse could speak some English. I told them, yea, I know. Her throat is sore. We need a note to say we’re fit to fly. (At this point her fever broke, she didn’t have a fever) They take her temperature with a thermometer under the arm, for “5 minutes”. 5 minutes they didn’t time. Sure enough, no fever. They start telling us that we need to return at 4pm for another assessment. I said, for what? Oh to make sure she doesn’t have a fever. I said, no no, Sunwing rep leaves at 4. I’m not going to wait for you guys. She won’t have a fever either way, I’m giving her Tylenol. I immediately saw that this was a game. They started implying that we brought them this sickness. That from Tuesday to Saturday night, our 3 year old brought this sickness. I guess it’s impossible to believe that she could have picked it up at the hotel?? I told them that if they walked around the hotel they’d hear people coughing, sneezing and sniffling. Nope, they refused to believe that. They asked me if I’d like to do a blood test. HAHA for a sore throat??? Oh please. Over my dead body would these people stick anything in my child’s arm. Our daughter had a heat rash developing too. The kind nurse turned off the air conditioning while we were in there so my kids skin was getting worse. What a tool. Our daughter has sensitivities to sunscreen, she wears a beach rash shirt outside and the rash was primarily where the sunscreen was applied but that was too hard for them to believe. She said she couldn’t write us a letter until we returned. I told my husband to go and get the Sunwing rep because clearly we weren’t getting anywhere. He comes, tries to double down that yes, she needs to return. Which I found funny because at the beginning privately he said, had we saw him first we wouldn’t need the doctor. Now he’s preaching she needs to return for another assessment. At this point I started to get very mad. All I wanted to do was go home. I told him regardless, she’s taking Tylenol, their assessment doesn’t mean anything. He then continues speaking Spanish to them. My husband was using google translate, the nurse attempted to grab the phone from his hands and tell him to stop recording. Shady!!! The doctor was trying to explain her name is on the line if she allows us to fly with a sick kid. Then they started talking about Covid. How we need to be tested. I called bull, how can we be tested for Covid when the entire hotel isn’t tested on arrival. So what, we brought Covid.. on Tuesday??? I said no way. They started to get nervous with me and then she started writing some sort of “diagnosis”. Only visually checked her throat ok. Remember people. Diagnosis her with something we couldn’t understand. Gives it to me on a paper with 2023 on it. Then she’s trying to stamp it everywhere and her stamp pad is dry. Joke. She then writes out her diagnosis on a blank piece of paper writing 2024 once the nurse points it out. Gives it to me. While she’s writing out this novel, the nurse is telling us not to allow our daughter to eat ketchup (we had it with us after breaky). Ketchup is giving her a fever and sore throat. Lol anyways.. I walk back to the Sunwing guy so we can book our flights. I ask him to read the letter, sure enough, no where did she write, fit to fly. They told us we’d need this document at the airport because she will be assessed at the airport. I told him to walk back and talk to them because if I go back in there, it won’t be pretty. He’s in there for 20 minutes. She squeezed in “fit to fly”. I asked him what the charge was for our visit with the doctors.. he said no charge. It was supposed to be $10 Canadian but I guess me calling out their shady “practice” was enough for them to skip the charge. I told Norge that these doctors need to watch more movies or tv shows to atleast fake being doctors. They just sit outside and smoke cigarettes all day.. waiting for their next customer to nail. We booked our flights, $465 each cnd to get out of there. We booked a taxi $80 to the airport to beat the buses. At no point were we assessed in the airport or asked for this hand written note. Nice lies “doctors” and Norge - you’re all playing games for money. It’s sad. Very sad. Sunwing, you are disappointing and we will never use you for travel again.
We saw our doctors in Canada, Monday morning. Our daughter picked up hand, foot and mouth disease. We swam at the pool on Wednesday and everyday after that we swam in the ocean. There were a bunch of kids at the airport from our hotel, sick as dogs. If your kids have a rash around their mouth, hands and feet.. you got it from the hotel. It’s spreading around. She’s on antibiotics. I also picked up strep throat while there. I’m also on antibiotics. No genius blood test required, just a swab. Lol They don’t sanitize the tables.. and the silverware isn’t all picked up after people eat. They just clear whatever looks touched or used. Some of the waitresses would hold it up, look if it was greasy and then decide if it needs to go back. Servingware isn’t sanitized so God only knows where we picked this up. Plates and glasses were greasy.. looked wiped but no soap. The manager we watched in the restaurant, he would walk by the places and use his fingers to wipe anything off the plates. Place mats on the tables aren’t wiped. You don’t smell vinegar or any sort of cleaning solution. The hotel manager can respond to this with some bull response saying they’re sanitizing, they’re not. We watched. Quite a few passengers on the plane home were coughing, sneezing, hacking. Curious if they had a trusty blood test or Covid test before flying LOL.
The beach was wonderful. You can’t beat Cuban beaches. Everything else.. is just too much to handle. If you can afford it, spend a bit more and go to another destination. We went here because it was our daughters first flight and the 3.5 hours on the plane we thought was a good starter for her. We were speaking to others that were in hotels down the way. It’s scary to believe that they had it worse. They were served moldy bread most days. Whoever owns these chains needs to be held accountable. The workers and managers aren’t to blame. They’re working with what they’ve got.. but the owners need a real slap. Unfortunately, we will never return to Cuba again. We were in Varadero in 2012 and it didn’t seem too bad. Covid beat Cuba up bad. The government needs to spend more and invest in tourism in that country before it’s suitable. Sickening and sad.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Beautiful setting
Everything was clean, well kept, and staff were friendly and accommodating. However the situation in Cuba is definitely getting worse for the residents. Shortages are to be expected by visitors too, but there is no reason to complain. We had two days of no eggs for breakfast and there was no white wine for the entire stay. Many guests grumbled unnecessarily. This is Cuba today. Sit back, relax, enjoy what there is, and know you are helping their economy by tourism. We had a wonderful time.

Playa Pesquero: Amazing resort
The resort was massive! So much walking! Our experience was absolutely amazing! The first night we arrived at night, the room we were given was a bit far from the beach and it had a strong humidity smell; we told them about it and they accommodated us and switched our room to an absolutely great room closer to the beach and pool since we had 2 kids. The resort was super clean, the beach is absolutely wonderful, plenty of lounge chairs and space and the reefs for snorkeling was just an amazing ex[... read more]perience for the adults and the kids alike! The cleaning staff was just great, the friendliness of the staff in the restaurants, the entertainment staff was so great, we didn’t miss a show and the kids entertainment was so good the kids couldn’t wait for 8:30 every night to go to the show! They even have a daycare for the kids and the staff is absolutely wonderful! (via and Thalia!) my kids didn’t want to leave when I came to pick them up the 2 days they went!
The doctors on site is wonderful, and the entire medical staff at the resort… the only thing I have is that the water kind of smelled and one day there was no bottled water - and that’s no fault of the resort, and the food isn’t really the best but thats a “Cuba” thing too and no fault of the resort…
I cannot wait to go back! Totally recommend it!

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Resort is declining
This was our fourth trip to this resort. We went there twice before Covid and obsoletely fell in love with the resort. The grounds are lush and beautiful, it was quiet and peaceful, the food was great with lots of selection, the staff were friendly and attentive.
Then Covid came. We returned last year knowing that things would not be the same but we were committed to the resort and its staff. We were right in our assumption and there was a definite reduction in food selection but not in quanti[... read more]ty. We were never hungry. The staff worked hard and everything else still seemed to be in place.
However, upon this years return we noticed a remarkable change. The resort itself is definitely showing its age. We heard lots of complaints from other guests regarding the quality of the rooms and utilities. The food selection was even less than the previous year and the quality of the food had diminished as well. No French Fries, no Ketchup, no Salad Dressing, no potatoes, no Limes, no bananas and the list goes on. Certain things they would have one day and then not the next.
We understand the issues that Cuba is having and i could get around the previous items noted. What i could not accept was the lack of service. This is not a country issue this is a resort issue. The service was horable compared to what it used to be. Let me be clear there are staff that still go over and above but it used to be all staff went over and above. We would literally be ignored at the pool restaurant and the Beach restaurant. One time after waiting 10 minutes at the Beach Restaurant my wife had to go up herself to get a menu and the waitress after seeing this still ignored us. This is something the resort itself can fix and it had better take notice and fix it if they have any inclination of staying a 5 star resort.
I hope Melia pays attention to the reviews and acts upon them. This was a fantastic resort that i would have happily recommended to anyone. Unfortunately, not so much anymore.

Aston Costa Verde Beach Resort: Resort was great as usual
This is always a wonderful resort with great staff. The main pool was under construction, however they noise was kept to a minimum and they have two pools so that didn't pose a problem. Rooms are wonderful if you are on the plus side (club) with very comfortable beds. Food was what you expect with current geopolitical conditions. I did two weeks in November and two weeks in January and find at the end of the second week the same meals are repetitive, however you never go hungry. What might be la[... read more]cking in food variety is more than made up at beach, the most beautiful beach amongst the 4 resorts that share playa costa verde. Also, what makes this hotel is the staff. Luckily, at least, decent quality BIER is available everywhere - to help you Forget all of the above... so called "food" is below any description... Playa Pesquero: Fantastic Resort and amazing trip
This resort was fantastic, very clean, great staff always willing to help and make your stay the best possible. The beach was fantastic, awesome watersports always available for your pleasure. The room was very nice and cleaned everyday with fresh supplies, our cleaning staff were amazing!
We were warned before our trip that we might experience shortages and we were expecting to be without many items according to some reviews we read on Cuba. I can honestly tell you that there was some shortag[... read more]es but nothing to be worried about. I wish that there would have been maybe more choices in the buffet, more fruit and veggies but there was still lots to choose from and it was pretty good so we never went hungry. The a la carte restaurants were wonderful, we had lobster twice nice grilled steak and chicken with salads so no complaints there for us, we really enjoyed the meals.
Where we experienced the worse shortages was the lack of bottled water use at most of the bars. The filtered water they were using had a smell and taste that we did not like at all so we adjusted and enjoyed drinks that were made with soda or beers and wine, We just stayed away from drinks made with the filtered water like their juices . The coffee bar was amazing! we enjoyed all different types of coffees and we especially enjoyed the ice coffees (Yum).
Overall for the state this country is in and the shortages they are experiencing this resort did a fantastic job of stick handling these concerns and made the best of it. I have no complaints and would return to this resort for sure.
I would give this resort a solid 4 star and can only expect better if they can have their supply chains opened up so they have no constraints on what they can provide. I hope they keep up the level of service as this was the most obvious plus that made this resort fantastic.
Keep up the great work!
C & J.
