Melia Jardines del Rey: large self contained resort
Nice grounds well maintained with many 3 story buildings. Resort is in the shape of a butterfly with central boulevard containing specialty restaurants and lobby and bars. Only drawback were mosquitoes which were biting.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Tranquil resort, great for couples
Beautiful grounds; not overly lit which was nice, very well-maintained and quiet. Pristine beach: one night we were the only people walking along it, save for the caretaker. Great tasting drinks, and really good food (in spite of what I'd heard about Cuba). Make sure you make your restaurant reservations early (a few days in advance). . .the Japanese restaurant was fun. We made our own way to Havana for a couple of days (I had previously booked our hotel in Habana Vieja online through Cuba Trave[... read more]l Network); the concierge helped us rent a vintage car ('55 Chev complete with driver and English-speaking guide! They were phenomenal!). The disco was quiet (Friday night) but worth going to. We had an upper floor ocean-view room; just a quick walk to the beach.

Melia Las Antillas: Not a 4.5 star hotel....at best 3
The Melia Las Antilles resort is in a serious need of upgrading. BIGGER isuue is the food offered in both their buffet and individual is being served luke warm to cold when items should be hot.......room temperature when needing to be cold. RESULTED in being sick.....first time in our travels in 10 years both in Cuba And Mexico. Grounds were just being taken care of with major trimming etc.which looked lovely but with one pool only,, work being done with pool deck surfacing and redoing each of t[... read more]he shade umbrellas left us not really wanting to spend time poolside. TOOK three rooms to finally settle in...1st one offered steps away from the only opened late bar....second one a much quieter choice but no safe offered and finally the third which had a safe that didnt work. THANKFULLY with excellent service from the girls on the front desk it was fixed within the day. CLEANING STAFF AND ALL GENERAL serving staff were excellent as well. BEST entertainment goes to their in house band which we were fortunate to hear twice.....defiantly ELLEN Show worthy. BEACH Is what we go to Cuba for so this didn't let us down. OCEAN defiantly colder in October than in April which was when we last visited and stayed at the Royal Hiccacus which is simply the better choice.

Melia Marina Varadero: Great resort and vacation!
The hotel was nice, the grounds were beautiful. Although the resort is fairly new the room looked pretty worn already. But you don't spend a lot of time in the room. The food was good you will always find something you like. The drinks were fabulous! Soooo much choice. The staff were incredible! Tips weren't expected and actually they seemed pretty surprised when you did tip. It's on the Marina so the resort is like a little town with lots to see and you are able to walk around. Melia Peninsula Varadero: Good time
The hotel, staff and food were all great. We had a minor issue with getting and additional bed as requested at booking but that was quickly rectified. The mosquitos were a bit of a challenge - bring bug spray and/or afterbite. Unfortunately, due to atypical weather, it rained 5/7 days. There is about an hour and a half bus ride from the airport which isn't the best but necessary.

Melia Las Americas: Authentic Cuba, Staff Stars Shine!
The first greeting upon arrival was from friendly helpful staff at check in and they even followed up with a phone call to see if we liked our room. We stayed in a bungalow at the far end of the property but with the kind assistance of the front desk a few days later, moved to one closer to the pool. Special thanks Yania and Boris.
The beach was fantastic and we saw Roberto from the animation team every day and enjoyed his great enthusiasm for the games and entertainment provided. The comedian i[... read more]n costume each evening was pricless!
The entire management team was at one event on the beach and guests were introduced to them. We were so impressed after seeing the GM at breakfast that same day greeting guests, then again at dinner. He was visible throughout the resort and very approachable and professional. The language skills of the staff were very impressive with German and even a bit of Russian along with French Italian and English.
All staff greeted us no matter what job they were doing and from the gardeners to the housekeeping staff.
We had one room maintenance issue which was attended to promptly. Every call to Guest Services was answered in a friendly and helpful manner. Room service was quick and pleasant and the housekeeping was of a very high standard every day of our stay.
The highlight of our visit was the bungalow pool staff which provided us with great food, fun exchanges and great service every time. Thanks Marlon, Joel and the others who made our vacation memorable.
You can upgrade a resort all you like but without the staff and their dedication to excellent service it would just be another resort. This place is very special and evident by the numerous returning guests

Melia Las Dunas: Awesome Resort Melia Las Dunas
My husband and I (and our 3 kids) have been travelling to Cuba for 15 years as we love the people, beaches and beauty of the untouched landscape and have been all over Cuba. In the past few years we have discovered Cayo Santa Maria which we love. This year we stayed at Melia Las Dunas for the first time. We left our kids at home and brought along another couple and a friend who has never seen Cuba before. The Hotel is beautiful, grounds/gardens/flowers stunning and the Beach is spectacular. The [... read more]Front lobby is amazing and comfortable equipped with a bar, store, a lot of lounging area and just a nice place to hang out. Great Ala Carte restaurants - Romantica has romantic sitting area outside for two and my husband and I were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and it was perfect place to celebrate (bring Off though mosquitos have a feast as well). The Rooms are clean and spacious but suggest that you do something about the front doors so lizards don't make their way into the rooms. If you could put screen doors on the balcony doors it would save on air conditioning because the night breeze would be lovely to sleep with the door open.
Buffet you can get a variety of food and it was great contrary to what people say about food in Cuba (made to order pasta, pizza, made to order fish, meat, chicken, salads, fish stews etc - you will not go hungry) Yusinel, Frank, George and Martha were fantastic waiters who took great care of us the entire week at the buffet. Enjoyed the ice cream parlour every afternoon and of course the Beer Garden was a great place to hang out anytime and all the waiters there were awesome - thanks for a great time. The Beach bar and grill superb try their grilled sandwiches to die for ham, cheese, cucumber and a special sauce grilled. Of course the Pool Bar now that was a place to be in the afternoon - beware though sitting around the bar in the pool could be dangerous if you are not careful. Fun in the Sun with Javier and Yusieny (I am sorry if I didn't spell your name right) but she is the beautiful bar tender that works with Javier. Now I recommend you try the Javier special These 2 bartenders made our week they are fantastic, friendly and have a lot of fun with everyone- Big Big Thank you for making our vacation great. I bet you miss Billy Jo calling "Javey" need another special...lol miss you guys.
Lots of bars Pool bar, beach bar, lobby bar, beer garden not only for alcohol but coffee, cappuccino, tea etc. nice sitting areas to relax. At night the Mojito bar was awesome - they did have a smoothie bar but it was not open while we were there.
Grounds is very big but they do have golf carts to transport people around. Although one thing I was not happy with we had a gentleman who stayed in our building and he had a walker. A few times he called for a cart to transport him and he sat there for 45 mins. I had to call to the front and ask for them to come and get him even though he had already asked. This was not his first time at this hotel and he never had this issue before. - This was disappointing to me.
Some suggestions I would like to make (this is not a put down just observations based on going to Cuba for 15 years). I feel the Entertainment staff needs to be more active with the guests, have more of a variety of activities on the beach/pool. The same things everyday get a little boring i.e. some more games like to get all ages involved. Same thing at the pool, there should be Cuban music playing in the back ground while activities are not going on we are on vacation want to feel the vibe of the Caribbean. The band each night was great and nice to listen to and see everyone dancing enjoyed that. The nightly shows however need to be greatly improved compared to what I have seen at other hotels. Although Carlos was great and his partner -sorry forgot his name but they were good in getting the crowd going. Other hotels the entertainers have been more engaged with the guests and had more fun I felt. I know that we went in low season (Oct 3-10) and not as much stuff may happen as in high season I felt there was enough people at the resort to be able to do more then what was done with the entertainment and some of the staff didn't make me feel like they wanted to be there.
I was not impressed with some of the attitudes of the people who worked the front desk although one gentlemen (sorry can not remember your name either) shorter guy, with glasses, dark hair was very nice and extremely helpful thank you for everything. My Friend at customer relations helped and planned my anniversary dinner and my friend Billy Jo 40th birthday dinner and My friend Priscilla's birthday dinner and made our celebrations very special thank you. She is fantastic and very funny!!!
Overall we had a fantastic time enjoyed everything, it was a relaxing, fun time for all of us and the resort was beautiful. I would recommend you go there you will not be disappointed.

Melia Marina Varadero: Wonderful resort!
I don't recommend any resort less than 5 stars, because we visited different resorts by the bus from airport to resort, those 3-4 stars looked so old and low quality. Melia Marina is one of the best resort in Varadero. Facility, service and food are reasonable. But don't expect too much on food. Overall the trip was smooth. Don't forget to buy some alcohol back in the airport, it was so cheap while the same thing is sold 5-6 times more expensive in Canada.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Royal Service Advantages
Paradises Princess met or exceeded our expectations as a resort in Cuba. I want to comment on the Royal Service aspect of the resort. Only someone who has stayed in both the regular side of the resort and Royal Service can comment on whether it is worth the extra money, but we believe it is. Here are a few things that made it worthwhile for us
Arrival at the airport, we were immediately put in a cab and whisked away to the resort. No waiting for the bus, no crawling through other resorts, no lis[... read more]tening to the rep selling tours. We were on the beach within 70 minutes of the plane touching down.
We received an upgrade to an ocean view room. This was equivalent to what we paid for Royal Service.
Our butler provided all the services we requested. Restaurant reservations, liquor requests, pillow requests. He also found our lost sweater, left in a restaurant and arranged a private tour to Havana in an antique car for the price of the bus tour.
The Royal Service exclusive (although everyone seemed to be able to use them) were excellent. The buffet for lunch and breakfast was much smaller and quieter than the main buffet and seemed to have a higher quality of food.
The Royal Service beach and beach bar were excellent with no problem getting the chairs at any time. There was some hogging of the beds, but this did not concern us
Overall a wonderful vacation.

Hotel Camino del Mar: great week
Our week at melia cayo Guillermo was very good. The resort is a little tired and does need a lot of updating but the staff makes
up for it. This resort is smaller and the staff gets to know you and takes care of all your needs. Most people we met there have been to this resort many times. That alone tells you everything. The beach is beautiful. We would not hesitate to go back again.

Melia Las Americas: Still getting better
We traveled from October 14 to the 21st.
We stayed in the bungalows.
Flight down was great. Staff at check in were very pleasant.
The weather for this week was supposed to be the best. But we were there to have some fun with our friends.
Cloudy and windy the 1st 4 days but very warm. Golfed these days. Took Sunday off.
Food was great I think it was better than the last time we were here.
This was the 5th time we stayed at this resort.
The staff are great!!
They are always there to help.
Sunday w[... read more]as not a great day for weather so we sat around and played games and read.
Here is where it gets interesting.
We were at a friends bungalow within 50 yards of ours. The rain had been heavy that day.
We were leaving and we did not go around but we crossed the grassy area. It was really more like mud with all of the rain. My wife's saddle caught it some of the mud. She stumbled forward and fell hitting her head on a palm tree. Once I was able to get her to roll over she had a very nasty cut and bump on her forehead.
This however was not the worst of it. She could move her arm.
I ran and called the front desk for assistance. They asked ,if we wanted a doctor. I said yes. They said the doctor that was on duty was gone and they would have to send for one.
No hotel staff ever came to assist us.
The ambulance and Doctor showed up about 15 minutes later. They could not bring a cernny in so we had to get my wife up and walk of from the back of the resort to ththe ambulance.
Head varadero to the hospital clinic.
Doctor said that my wife's arm was broken.
At the hospital they took exrays and yes arm broken just below the shoulder.
She was given a shot for pain and bandaged up and given so medication.
Back to the resort in about and hour and a half. Not bad.
Once back at the hotel staff moved us from the bungalows to the main building. No problems. From then on the hotel staff were fantastic.
The next day they called us 6 times to see what we needed.
The Sunwing rep called 5 times that morning to make sure we were ok. Rafele looked after everything for us. Pre book our seats back. Arranged for and extra late check.
Customer service from the hotel checked, in on us every day til we left. Fantastic.
My only problem was they did not come out when we called them the day it happened.
Do we like this resort you bet we will be back. This did not detour us one bit.
Beds were great, food was great, service was great.

Melia Buenavista: One of the best Cuban Resorts we have been too!!
This resort was very clean, the rooms were gorgeous and the Royal Service was the best we have ever had! I have been to Cuba several times and have always had a great time, I love the Cuban people, they are always very friendly. One of the only downfalls of Cuba has been the food, it has always been mediocre, however, the Melia Buenevista offered all a la carte restaurants and the food was great! A word of caution, if you are looking to party with friends, this is not the resort for you, however[... read more], if you are looking for a romantic getaway with your significant other, this is the place you want to go!!

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: DO NOT STAY AT THIS RESORT
Paradisus Princessa Del Mar is a very unfriendly and very unwelcoming place to stay. First, the front desk agents are very rude and do not smile. Even worst are the Lobby Bar staff. They are rude and ignore you while you are at the bar or seated at a table. The buffet morning staff was excellent. Danielyst and Luiba were professional and fantastic servers. The omelette ladies were great and the girl who made pancakes were great! Our chamber maid was amazing. We gave gifts from our heart to those[... read more] who were appreciative, however we did not appreciate the lifeguard at the beach and pool asking us for gifts.
The food was not good at all. Yes there was variety of mostly bad. The stirfry service by the buffet was good in taste but miserable in service. She was so unpleasant. I watched the visitors saying thank you and she rudely ignored each one.
The grounds were nice. The entertainment was boring except for the one day we had amazing opera singers. They were excellent!!
Tipping is expected. If you don't tip be prepared to have your chamber maid not leave you towels for days and tell you to be more economical by leaving you a note on your bed...this was done to someone we met at the resort.
The management and workers need to be trained in customer service. The front desk supervisor did express his regrets but it's our money lost and too late once were gone.
Lastly, building 4 lost power on 3 occasions and we couldn't shower because it was too dark and no electricity to dry our hair. When we contacted the front desk in person she made us wait close to 45 minutes to find us a room which was available. I understand that things happen but their response to make changes and offer us a room to shower was neglectful...again poorly trained staff and management.
Before leaving we kept and open mind and read all the reviews. Unfortunetly the negative reviews were all true regarding the terrible lobby bar and front desk staff. The food was bad and heard that other places in the surrounding areas offered way better food. Do not go to this resort.
Sunwing was excellent. The flight attendants and pilot were great!! I would fly Sunwing again.
