Beautiful Resort

The room was very nice and a good size. We had a huge balcony,we were in the adult only building. The grounds were well manicured. Our agent Martine Reid was excellent. We will always book with her. The food was good but hard to make reservations at the ala cartes.

Great Vacation at Bahia Luxury Akumal

Just returned from 2 weeks April 5th to 19th. Beautiful resort and very accommodating staff that worked so hard to make sure everything was in order. Special shout out to Mariah and Eric on the Entertainment Staff who where exceptional.

Nice Resort

We really enjoyed our vacation, the resort was beautiful and everyone was so nice. The only thing I didn't like was the unlimited al a carts, I didn't know that you had to reserve 10 days in advance on their app. So we didn't get to experience the specialty restaurants.:(

Over promise, Under deliver

THE GOOD... Overall the property is very large and beautiful and aging but quite well maintained. There are many pools (both busy and quiet) and expansive beach areas with safe swimming and decent snorkeling areas. There is no shortage of beach / pool recliners to spend a few hours in the sun. A very unique feature is the transportation system that is made up of a large number of large modified golf cart like vehicles that travels the many pathways and roadways throughout the resort on a regu [... read more]lar schedule. This is free to visitors of the resort. Most staff were quite friendly and helpful, with the exception of some front desk staff who tended to deflect concerns. Our visit to the Spa for a Mayan Massage and Reflexology treatment was excellent! our therapist was Berenice and she was excellent! Definitely the highlight of our week. THE BAD... Depending on the package and individual resort that you purchase there is a promise of dining at the specialty restaurants. The package we purchase was at the "Luxury" Akumal Resort which was supposed to include daily dinners at their specialty restaurants. Upon arrival, however, when we tried to book our dinners we were informed that all the restaurants were totally booked for the week! It was only after many heated discussions with several staff including 3 managers that we were able to get 5 of 7 bookings. Most of these were only discovered at the last minute after checking with the "entertainment" coordinators multiple times during the day! THIS CAUSED A LOT OF FRUSTRATION AND STRESS...something you go on holidays to avoid. Sadly, we have experienced the same frustration on previous visits to this resort but hoped that things would have improved. This resort was technically "all inclusive" but proved to be not really the case. The specialty restaurants had nearly as many choices on their menus that were available FOR AN EXTRA CHARGE as choices that were included, including liquor. The many bars had a reasonable amount of recognizable "premium" brands of liquor but when the staff poured drinks I always saw them use unrecognizable domestic brands? of cheaper liquor. The mixed drinks that included fruit juices all had a very UNPLEASANT chemical like taste which resulted from using cheaper fruit juice alternatives / concentrates. When I asked what type of red wine was being offered at dinner the waiter just laughed and declared that he did not know. Upon reading the bottle he was right. There was no grape variety listed, it just said red wine. Same for the white. (Unsurprisingly it was not good). But unsurprisingly you could actually purchase FOR AN EXTRA CHARGE a named bottle of Merlot, Cab Sav, Pinot Noir, etc. The same applied to some of the resort bars that were open in the evening. Despite displaying moderately premium brands of liquor, they were only available at EXTRA COST. We experienced several minor irritations with our room that included loss of TV signal on three occasions, malfuntion of the in room safe, and malfuntion of our room access key. While none of these were serious they took multiple conversations / visits with hotel staff to rectify. FRUSTRATION AND STRESSFUL! CONCLUSIONS.... In my opinion this resort is no longer 5 star but probably 4 star. Although they make many promises about the superior service level at the Akumal Resort this is not the case. We have also previously stayed at the Coba resort and there is not an appreciable difference (except that it is less expensive and has much better fun vibe...especially in the evening. We spent the most evening time there.

Reasonable

Food: excellent. Buffets have a lot of variation. You won't starve, A la carte.. Really good. You do have to go online to pre-book restaurants. Get the app, pre check in, pre book restaurants... And then day of leaving, pre check out. Pretty painless Room was clean, but very musty smelling 7516. They were made aware, but did nothing. Definitely need water shoes. There's lots of rock/Coral.. Especially adult section. They did their very best cleaning the sargassum. The big beach is busy [... read more], water is shallow, so good for little kids. Pools were clean. Not freezing cold. Really big resort. If you don't care about the beach and are a pool person, you'll love it.

3.5 stars - poor a la carte restaurant system, rooms need updating and cart service could be improved

Pros: a lot of restaurants to choose from if booked at Akumal luxury resort staff was 99% great and friendly smaller 3 story complexes which makes it more quiet in rooms a/c worked great in our room kids waterslides at Coba resort great for kids 3-12 decent amount of shade and trees throughout a good part of property room service can be done through app and arrives within 40 minutes night entertainment, especially music, very good for family to enjoy local music/bands we had a lot of ch [... read more]oice of fruits at buffets and even a gluten free bread option available Cons: even though a la carte restaurant offers a lot of choice, if you aren't aware you can book 10 days before your arrival, you will have a lot of trouble finding a restaurant to book which then disappoints paying the extra cash to stay at Akumal versus other properties as Akumal is only one giving you 1 a la carte reservation per night while other resorts (Coba and Tulum) offer 2 reservations per week a la carte restaurants show as full on app but between 17:30-19:00 often just 20-30 people out of capacity of 100+. We were told this is because people don't cancel their reservations which sounds like bs as I don't see 80% of people not cancelling there reservations. We were told you can take a chance at a restaurant and walk in and see if the hostess will allow you or you can ask customer experience (desk near lobby) to see if they can work some magic. Still inconvenient when you pay extra for a la carte. Big miss here for a la carte restaurant reservations. the cart service to travel can be good but if you go to Tulum resort, expect to wait 15 minutes for a cart to get back to Akumal or Coba resort can be a lot of walking if you aren't able to catch a cart to drive you which isn't ideal with smaller kids heard a lot of complaints about beach being rocky can get some waiters in a la carte restaurants who disappear for a while which makes dining experience longer than it should be our bathroom was dated. mirrors were stained and tub/shower was needing some uplift. beds were hard and pillows we had a lot but all worn out were your head just goes right through it For Akumal luxury resort, I give this a 3.5 stars due to extra money you pay for a la carte reservations which you are entitled to 1 per night versus 2 per week at other properties at resort. If you can't get in restaurants, why pay more? Also the cart service can be an issue depending where you want to go. Rooms need some updating.

Excellent Resort

The resort was beautiful with plants and flowers along all the walking paths. Amazing dining experience in all of the a la carte that we visited and great buffet too! Pools and beach great. We enjoyed them all. We would definitely return to this resort.

Greatvresort let down by details

The Bahia group of resorts have really nice facilities. Reception, public areas, pools are all great. Unfortunately the rooms at Akumel are very old and tired, and not at all 5 star. Also a la carte restaurants are great, IF you can get a reservation. It is almost impossible to get reservations at reasonable times. I personally I'd chose Sian Kaan if you don't have kids, but it's a 10 min shuttle ride to the beach.

Top Notch Resort!

Bahia Principe Resorts never ceases to amaze and this one didn't either. Food was fantastic, snorkeling right on the beach with tons of fish to see, endless entertainment for the kids and so much to walk around and see! Aside from the rooms needing an update the rest of the resort was amazing! Would highly recommend!!

Comfortable

The resort on first approuch was excellent, front end staffing was top end along with all services to our villa. Resturants were clean,friendly and had good value for a all inclusive. Buffet was well staffed however at best in 10 days table service was less than desired and hot food was at best warm unless you waited for fresh turns. staffing in this area need more training to reduce running back and forth for item such as coffeemate as in Mexico cream seem to be unavailable. Room was comfortabl [... read more]e ,clean with great maid service however needs to be update as far as furnishing go to provide better comfort exspecially to linen blankets and towels. enjoyed our trip even through it was a little expensive to what we recieved.

Bahiz Principe Luxury Akumal Wedding Experience

The property is stunning. Entering through an avenue of beautiful foliage, to an impressive entry and spacious lobby, check-in was efficient and friendly. The room was clean, attractive and well-serviced. The villa area was quiet and beautifully landscaped, with lots of birds and wildlife.Buffet and réassurants were excellent, with good variety and quality of meals offered. Entertainment was excellent, if rather loud. The beach areas were clean, with plentiful shade areas. The beaches the [... read more]mselves tend to be rocky, requiring water shoes, but one particular lagoon had spectacular snorkelling. There could be more towel stations, as I was only aware of one. Pools are beautiful and refreshing, i enjoyed the quiet pool and Adult area. Staff were consistently friendly, pleasant and efficient. Room service was excellent, although food sélection and quality were only moderate. The wedding was beautiful and appeared perfect (I was not involved in the planning) The resort is huge, requiring .a lot of transport on small trolleys, which were comfortable and frequent. Even so, there is considerable walking Activities and the staff were excellent, with a wide variety, and great animators. In all, and excellent property, and I look forward to my next visit!

Couples Vacation to the Bahia

We loved the Bahia Akumal, this property really has put the effort into accommodating everyones needs, vacation type and budget. This property has 4 resorts in one, if you stay at Akumal and Sian Ka'an you have access to all 4 resorts which are accessible by tram. And you have 7 a la carte dinners at any of the restaurants on the property. By using the bahia app you can book your a la carte up to 10 days before your departure. We really enjoyed that aspect of our trip was already taken care of.  [... read more] Akumal makes efforts to ensure there are adults only spaces throughout the resort; on the beach as well as an infinity pool with its own buffet, which was also adults only, offering breakfast and lunch. We really enjoyed this feature as we could go for breakfast and stay till lunch and then decide where we wanted to go for the rest of the afternoon. Sian Ka'an was the other adults only; however the age demographic was mostly 50-60's and this resort was a good distance from the beach and more of a jungle vibe; very quite and secluded. However we prefer to be near the beach where we can hear the ocean. If you are a Golfer this side of the resort has a PGA course. Some of the differences between Akumal and Tulum (the more popularly booked option and the biggest section of the complex) Tulum is more updated and is quite large, it also has the biggest beach frontage however the largest section of the beach (at least during the time of year we were there: February) didnt have enough space between the short and an incline to put loungers so the loungers for this section were behind a short fence and some greenery/vegetation. This part of the beach is also the closest to Tulum's largest pool. So a bit of a walk down the beach to get to the loungers that are directly on the beach where you can see the surf. The beaches at Akumal give you more options in terms of terrain; the adults only section of the beach has quite a lot of ocean life and a great spot to snorkel, they ensure all akumal beaches have surf breaks and therefore much calmer water to enter and exit from and makes snorkeling possible however, one of these beach options was fairly rocky so consider wearing water shoes. Tulums bigger beach doesn't have a break and during our stay the waves were too strong to make the swim enjoyable, so it was really nice to have a calmer option at akumal. Tulum has more snack bars for between the lunch and dinner service buffets then Akumal has, and we found that they kept those snack bars more stocked and therefore more options to choose from then akumal. We found the differences between the luxury option at Akumal and Tulum and Coba to be slight but worth it. They have poolside and beach drink service. They have service at every bar vs self serve at some of tulums bars. The Buffets were comparable however, the higher end option at Tulum might be something like Piaya and at Akumal a chef sliced roast or meat of some kind. Also things like Avocado/guacamole was at all of the Akumal buffets but not at Tulum when we came for a meal. So small subtle differences but you could see them throughout your stay. Some of the negative parts of our stay would be in the buffets; the food is so poorly labeled for anyone with dietary requirements aka allergy its very unclear if you are getting what is labeled at any point. For example the sushi was never labeled properly and when asked for clarification they were unable to tell us which item was which. Or when looking at the options before you, there is clearly a dish of plantains however that tag is no where on the listing for that section. There is no allergen warnings labeled either. And even in section where there was several things containing shellfish the labels were not accurate. This is likely a common occurrence down south where english is a second language however, its worth noting if you have concerns in this area. We also had a few small items go missing from our room, so that was disappointing but not large enough items to worth mentioning to staff. The location from Cancun is a bit of a trip, it was only supposed to take 1.5 hours but due to traffic and road maintenance it took 3 hours to get there. Upon speaking to other guests that arrived through Tulum airport they said it took no time at all to make it through the airport and they were at the resort in under and hour. Overall we had a great trip, we would return to this location, and we would recommend it to friends.

Great resort

Found the pictures of the pool very misleading! Instead of one large long pool as we had expected, it was broken up into several separate pools!! The buffet was passable but not great for every meal. The ala carte restaurants were excellent and dispite comments to the contrary we had NO PROBLEM making reservations for them at the customer service desk once we arrived.

Exceptional!

Stunning hotel with great beachfront for swimming. Lots of wildlife to see snorkelling off the beach. Very good buffet and excellent restaurants. Access to great outings. Exception and kind service. Lots to do! Highly recommend.

Amazing, beautiful resort.

We stayed at the Bahía Príncipe Akumal, adult only resort and cannot say enough about it. The rooms were beautiful, so spacious and clean. The grounds were beautifully kept, we had our own pool, restaurant and beach with lots of chairs available. The drinks were yummy, the food delicious and the people so friendly and helpful. We do not have one bad thing to say about this property and we will definitely be going back. Thank you for a wonderful vacation.

Our Favourite

The resort was fantastic, food was great, staff was polite and helpful, grounds were immaculate. Room was comfortable, beach was the best we’ve had in Mexico. Golf course on the property. We will be going back next year.

Bahia Principe Luxury Akumel

We have stayed at a lot of all inclusives and we definitely rate this one as best one we have ever stayed at. We were in adult section of adult luxury Akumel. Check in was our first impression of great service, grounds and pools were beautiful, staff were amazing, very accommodating and helpful, trolleys readily available for rides, buffets had good selection and a la carte restaurants had amazing food! We will be back to this resort as we loved it!

A lovely resort

Well maintained, very large resort in four sections. Akumal is by far the nicest of them. The restaurants are fantastic, especially the Japanese ones. Lovely pool facilities. Great beaches. The shuttle service is wonderful.

Great Staff at this resort

The rooms are a bit dated if you get the junior suite, but they do the trick. Good for sleeping and getting ready for the day. The food was great. You will not go hungry here. The service staff were amazing. Always attentive. Don’t fall for the privilege club sales pitch. Unless you have tens of thousands to spend to be a member and want to waste your time in the sun being hounded. Say no thank you and move on. Great pools. Always can find a spot. Massages in the spa were amazing.

Beautiful resort!

This is an absolutely amazing resort. The rooms were as stated, large & clean. The service was great. We had a problem with our safe and someone came within 5 minutes to help us. Always had clean towels, fridge was stocked daily. The main buffet was huge, clean and had wonderful friendly staff. We ate at a different restaurant every night and every one of them was fantastic. Beach and all the pools were great. The infinity pool was our favorite. Can't say enough about this resort. We loved it.
