Fantastic resort with great staff

The rooms at this hotel were extremely clean and well maintained. Very modern and everything worked well. Staff were fantastic and really friendly. They had a ton of activities and all of the areas were clean. Large assortment of different types of alcohol and mixes, and the food was fantastic as well. We were in a big group and they were very accommodating and helped us get meals together.

Good resort

Resort is clean and fun , staff is friendly and food was good . Room was awesome and big with all you need . Only problem we had was a so called sewage fee of $ 11 .00 , on arrival and no rooms ready til 4 pm .

Not bad

The resort is beautiful, nice and small and the rooms were very nice, it's clean and the beach is beautiful too...the food was not the best and it was very repetitive ....most of the staff were very nice but I found the lady who checked us in was cold and unhelpful and the whole time we were there she was always the same , cold and unhelpful...the other thing is it was extremely hard to have our money exchanged, we had bigger peso bills or US dollars w us but the resort hardly ever had smaller b [... read more]ills of pesos...also the fact that there was no wifi unless we paid a lot of money for it made it almost impossible to keep in touch w family at home...my husband and I still managed to enjoy ourselves as the weather was beautiful but we would not go back or recommend it to family and friends. Amazing vacation at Occidental Jan 2020

We would definitely return to the Occidental. The grounds, the beach, the room and the food was fabulous. This resort has such a great Mexican atmosphere and was exactly what we wanted. Everyone goes above and beyond to make your stay pleasant. Would highly recommend this resort.

Good value

We did a one week stay with 8 adults. Resort is good value for the cost. Rooms are spacious, well appointed. Food is average. Booking the a la carte restaurants was far more complicated and frustrating than it should have been. It should not take almost one hour of wheeling and dealing to book a sitting for what we were minimally entitled to and paid for. Pool was adequate. No swim up bar for the adults. If you are looking for peace and quiet, beware. Rooms are not soundproof and main villa vestibule area echo all sound. If one is looking for some sun and on a budget consider this facility.

Great resort

The resort was very clean. Rooms very nice. Food quite good. Only negative was that check in took quite a long time. Also the reservations for the a la carte restaurants was very frustrating. We were told the only time left was thursday at 9pm. Upon further review we eventually got a reservation in all 3 restaurants and every time there were a lot of empty tables. Overall this is a very nice resort.

Good value for money.

Pros: - Great beach - Big rooms - Buffet is above average for this type of hotel Cons: - The hotel walls are very thin. When our neighbour coughed, it woke us up - Service isn't great. Attitude from the poorly trained staff and you will have problems booking your la carte reservations, checking in and out and getting towels - Stay away from the seafood restaurant!! Very old seafood. - The nightly entertainment isn't any bargin (Karaoke night means the staff puts on 3 songs and shuts i [... read more]t off) - The after hours pizzeria is never open so make sure to fill up at dinner. Overall, we had a nice stay once we figured out what to stay away from. It is good value for $1100-$1200 but I wouldn't pay anymore. The beach is fantastic. We ended up eating in Cozumel (off resort) three nights and would recommend you do the same if you want a nice dinner. The service is awful both at front desk and at the buffets. We had to get our own utensils and beverages almost every night even though you are supposed to get these from the wait staff. Not a huge deal but was frustrating.

So relaxing!! Completely rejuvenated!!

What a beautiful resort. Instead of clearing jungle, they built around it. The resort was completely full and the only night you would have guessed was on New Years! The beach is beautiful and there is a lot of it! There is an adult pool which is a nice option. The other pool is down on the beach which provides a beautiful view!! Great resort

This was our second time staying at the Occidental and it did not disappoint. Our flights to Cozumel were delayed 3 hours, but the staff stayed around until 2am to get us checked in to our rooms and settled. Beach was clean and maintained and so where the grounds. Everyone was friendly and said good morning. The one disappointment was the service at the Alcart Restaurants. The food was not much better than at the Buffets and the service was terribly slow. Beautiful, No Crowds and Totally Relaxing

Our experience at the Occidental Cozumel, Nov 29th - December 6th was exacting what we were looking for. the staff were constantly friendly and helpful. The room was clean, large and very comfortable. Our dining experiences were all positive whether at the buffet or restaurants...the seafood being our favorite. Easy access to diving and smaller size of the resort was perfect. We'll definitely be back.

Fantastic holiday!!!

Occidental Cozumel did not disappoint!! From the beautiful grounds to the amazing staff this resort was definitely worth the extra few bucks we paid. Cozumel is a favourite destination of ours and once again the island has set itself apart for an amazing downtown core and beautiful places to eat and visit like Coconuts. Santos at the adult pool won our vote for best customer service throughout the week. We will definitely be back!!!

Good resort but left some things to be desired

The room was decent BUT mini fridge only stocked every other day The food was good BUT the variety was poor, lunch was pretty much the same every day, omelette bar was awesome at breakfast The evening entertainment was not as good as I had hoped for BUT some neat things were seen The daily activities were pushed hard at the activity pool but were still pretty much the same every day There is no alcohol served before NOON...so if you plan to drink from dawn til dawn...not this resort Not th [... read more]e best reef to snorkel on but there were still some fish The beach was good and sandy BUT hard to find shade and keep it (no palapas or umbrellas on the beach but there were umbrellas at the pools) Overall, consider whether you want a small, remote resort or a big partying resort

Amazing!

The Occidental Cozumel was everything we expected. Great beach with lots of shape from the palm trees. Buffets were also very good. very friendly staff. Enjoyed the adult pool. Lots of wildlife and a jungle feel. Great spot to snorkel right at the beach.

One of the best value

Average size hotel, not too many rooms; surrounded by nature - very beautifull. Located in the Cozumel natural park - they preserve a lot of trees between their buildings, keeping quietness. Food is good, drinks are nicely done. Service quality varies. We appreciated the free hour kayak rental ;). Cool ambiance/atmosphere around pool : they vary the music (rock included ;) . Incredible Resort

This resort was very well maintained and the staff was top notch. Pool side you will find a few iguanas that love to lounge around just as much as the tourists. Water was very clear and calm, and there were a lot of activities/water sports available each day. No shortage of lounge chairs either, we were always able to find a spot. Great Resort

Wasn't sure what to expect. We were welcomed as soon as we got in with some punch. All staff extremely friendly and helpful. They all wanted to make sure we had a pleasant stay. Loved the rooms,clean, big, lots of water . No complaints on the food Lots of choices as I stay away from gluten and dairy. Al la carts were all delicious. Spend the day at the beach. Absolutely breathtaking. I honestly dont have anything negative to say. We'd return and recommend.

Nice Resort

Occidental Cozumal is a beautiful resort. The staff are very friendly and hard working, rooms are nice and spacious and fridge was always stocked. However the food needs some work. Two of the nights it was a Chinese concept, 4 days apart. Also had 3 nights of severe severe diarrhea.

Beautiful Resort

The resort contained beautiful well maintained gardens and grounds which housed an array of wildlife such as iquanas, gekos and birds (if you're not an animal lover don't worry they will not approach you). The rooms were clean and spacious with lots of hot water and adequate air conditioning. Lots of choices at the buffet and food handling was of high standard. Adult pool was lovely and we enjoyed the daily visits by the iguanas but you had to select your pool chairs early in the morning if you wanted a spot. Beach was nice and contained a childerns pool nearby. I can’t say enough about the hotel staff they made every effort to make your stay enjoyable especially the food and bar servers. We also enjoyed the pizza at night and the nightly shows are of good quality. We arrived around 8:30pm at the Cozumel airport, ignore the sales people in the airport lobby (they make you think they're your hotel reps) and go directly through to meet your ride to the hotel which is ~20 min drive. Once at the hotel checkin took 10-15 min and then we were driven to our room. Even at 9pm the buffet area was open, also pizza was available upstairs in the open patio. We purchased the island tour package which was good but too long and snorkling (Charra- ch?? the bigger boat with a bathroom) which was fantastic, we saw turtles and a lot of fish, crew was great too. We recommend downloading your airline app on a cell phone to checkin to your flight prior to as it will eliminate standing in the very long checkin line at the airport. You receive 1hr free internet, there were 2 computers onsite I assume for flight checkin. Extra internet access can be purchased for a fee.

A week of Sun and Diving

We just got back from our week at Occidental Cozumel. We chose to try this resort before settling on a brand of hotels we truly love, like Iberostar. Keep in mind while reading this review that we just got back 3 months ago from being at Iberostar Paraiso Maya, which was an incredible 5 star experience compared to what we received at Occidental. Upon arrival at 11am, we were told that we had to check in at the Royal Club and to wait for a golf car to pick us up. After waiting around for 1 [... read more]0 - 15 minutes, my husband and I chose to walk the 2 minutes over to the club to check into our rooms (not an issue, but not sure why they wanted to drive us over). There seems to only be one golf cart for the entire resort, very much unlike Iberostar's fleet of 20+. Wifi is an additional fee if you are not Royal Club (it was free at Iberostar), and not sure why they wanted to check us in at the Royal Club since they claimed it was full and we could not upgrade to it. Our room was "not ready" so we had to come back at 3pm for our room keys. Wasn't an issue as we headed to the buffet. We got our keys at 3pm only to find that we were being placed on the ground floor. If you are on the ground or second floor of any of their buildings, prepare to hear every toilet flush, every shower, every suitcase and every step of your neighbours above. Luckily we asked to be moved up, and managed to be in a second floor room with quieter top floor neighbours. Emma, the concierge was very quick and helpful to find us a room, and extremely understanding of our concerns. All week, the single lunch buffet they have on site was sparse in comparison to the immense selection we had at Iberostar. Not only was it sparse in selection, it was sparse in quantity. Once whatever dish was finished, it generally was not replenished for the duration of the meal. Speaking of sparse, the staff on site seemed to not only be sparse, but not eager to greet you as they did at Iberostar. Almost every single time we went to a restaurant (breakfast, lunch and dinner) we had to wait a good 5 - 10 minutes before being seated because there was no host (and no line up). One time at lunch, there was a good 30 - 40 person line up for the buffet because the host was not only seating people, she was clearing tables and serving drinks. Breakfast and lunch are very bland and repetitive - so if you are looking for just peanut butter and toast, or stale home fries and soggy eggs, you will be content. At breakfast, the omelet station is generally left unattended, only managed to have eggs made fresh twice because no one was there, even after standing around waiting for someone to arrive. Rooms are nice, but odd that the closet and safe is inside the bathroom. Tiles are particularly slippery when wet so beware! No fun towel art or kind notes from the cleaning staff, and generally they take a very long time to get to your room. There isn't a big traditional theatre as most resorts showcase for evening performances, just a big empty square with plastic chairs. The grounds are lush and beautiful with iguanas and coaties. Beach is not as well maintained as most resorts I have been to. Garbage and plastic cups are discarded and not cleared as quickly. There appeared to be only one staff member asking to bring you drinks, as well as only one bar to get drinks from for the beach and pool next to the single pool at the resort. There is an adult pool too, but we are more ocean swimmers than pool. We were there mainly for the diving, but always enjoy dressing up and eating like kings on vacation. Although the diving was incredible, we were disappointed with the dining experience at the resort. It is possible that they were understaff, however, we will most likely not be returning to Occidentals anywhere due to this experience.
