Terrible resort

Very disappointed. Staff were unfriendly. Food was terrible. Same thing eery day lunch and dinner. All fried food. Over spiced. No real selections. 3 days of no rolls or fresh bread. Very little to choose from salad bar fruits and deserts. Entertainment poor. Nothing to do there. Beach was poor

Worst experience

Worst experience! Customer service at the resort is really bad. No one smiles or greets. We landed at 11:30am, but they gave the room at 3:00 exactly. Food was decent. Pools are all so small especially the party pool and couldn’t go into the pool. Washroom toilet was not flushing. Main issue was the lack of customer service.

Disappointing resort

The restaurants are hit and miss not consistent quality , The entertainment was brutal and while your watching the show there is nothing else going on no beach party or other things to do. So your choice is watch the lousy show or go to bed , the booze was sub standard and watered down no premium booze all week i never had the same drink twice trying to find a decent drink also not consistent RUI OWNES THREE PROPERTIES IN A ROW i wanted to go see what the other hotels were all about incase i [... read more] liked them better and wanted to stay there next time around, we kept getting thrown out the other two hotels can come and go as the please to our hotel but it is forbidden for us to even walk through they even cut the beaches off for no access all 100% true

Riu Montego Bay

The entertainment/entertainers were awesome. This is definitely a busy, activity filled, louder, party hotel. The rooms are great, they’ve been updated- the pictures do not make them justice. The food is good. It’s not the best I’ve ever had but in terms of resort food, it is good. The service is incredible. Some of the best I’ve had. Several pool options, I would’ve given pools alone a 5 star. Waterpark is amazing. The beach is underwhelming. It’s quite small and the view is obstruc [... read more]ted by the Sandals resort and rocks. The hotel is less than 15 min from the airport. COVID restrictions in effect. Clean, safe, fun! The Grand Dilema

Posting a review about the RIU Montego Bay resort for me seems to swing to both sides of the table. To explain the review I will review each part seperately. Arrival and check in: After a small hiccup of being directed to the wrong counter by a hotel check in staff member, the experience went well. Friendly, informative and quick. Waited almost three hours for the bellman to bring mybags to the room, and eventually got them ourselves, as I wanted to change and head to the beach or pool. R [... read more]oom: The room was ok. Small but clean. They seem to ha e a shortage of towels a d floor mats as I only had the full compliment on arrival. Each subsequent, after the room was serviced I had to ask for the towels which had either been forgotten or were not available. The bathroom floor mat/towel for exiting the shower was only avail on the first day. Was never available after that. The "fully" stocked mini bar was one bottle of dark rum, and one bottle of vodka(Not a recognized brand), Coca-Cola, sprite and water. Small easy to use safe I the room to keep valuables. Room.was generally good... towel issue not a major thing at all. Food / dining: The attempt at fine dining at the Asian and Italian, and Steakhouse needs work. The food quality at the buffet was actually better. Made three attempts to eat the steak in different restaurants at the resort. The advertised rib eye is not actually rib eye, but some not very well cooked mystery part of the cow. The breakfast options were good. Mix or local and American style food. The staff at dining rooms were great. Very friendly very help full. The jerk at the buffet was slightly better tasting than the jerk on the beach setup. Pool: The pool areas are all great. The pools are clean and tested multiple times daily. Lots of space at the 5 pools. Beach: Doing this separately from the pool as it was my only area of dissapointment. I did not know this before, but the hotel is built on reclaimed swampland and the beach photos are a bit misleading. The first 4ft or so when entering the water is white sand and clear water, but after that, the floor is all silly mud, dark grey in color which your feet will sink into about 2-3 inches when you stand. Not a great feeling at all. Going swimming was the reason I went on this trip but only did that at the beach on the first day. Only swam in the pool after that. Or stuck to the first 4 feet of entry to the water which was only 2ft deep. I'm probably not he only one who noticed this, because of the hundreds of people on the beach, I only ever saw about 10 people in the water. Bar: The bar has a set menu which does not co soft of any premium alcohol, but the pina coladas were amazing with the dark rum. I asked if the had Prosecco once and was told yes.. then watched him mix regular white wine with club soda. Hotel: Recently renovated, the decor is much better than that of what I had a glimpse of the RIU Reggae. Covid 19: Masks required for any service including the bar etc. Sanitizer is everywhere. Return...? Hard to say... I was content at the pool but being an islander myself, a d wanting the beach for swimming, I probably would not go back, although everything g else was ok... everything is not perfect, but does not really.need to be. Difficult to say I won't return due to the muddy beach when the staff was so great. If the beach swimming is not important to you, then I highly recommend this resort.

Mainly pros, some cons

Beautiful hotel, especially the stunning lobby, large pool, and sparkling clean rooms. Food was hot and varied, and there were plenty of lounge chairs both around the pool and on the beach. We found the staff friendly and chatty (esp. Lady Chocolate), and they really added to our experience. The only 'cons' from my perspective was the frequent passing of airliners overhead, as the resort is very close to Montego Bay airport. And the beach frontage is not huge, because guests are not allowed to p [... read more]ass onto the Sandals beach next door, nor the other Riu property on the other side. Having said that, there was lots of shade, and the 12-3 daily barbecued jerk chicken on the beach was yummy.

Beautiful Resort

The spaces in this hotel were large and inviting - with lots of areas to choose from at different times of the day, and for different activities. The lobby was an airy space for lounging and talking, or chatting over a drink from the lobby bar. There was a beautiful covered portico for breakfast (as well as air conditioned eating areas). There was plenty of shady and sunny loungers around the pool and on the beach to make that relaxing holiday come true - and the Jerk Chicken on the beach was a lunchtime favorite. The wetbars were very well stocked, and all amenities were excellent.

Excellent vacation

Excellent food and staff! Everyone went out of their way to make sure everyone was happy and they succeeded. Rooms were cleaned thoroughly and early every day. Drinks were generous with liquor. Buffet had a large variety daily and the restaurants were also nice. The entertainment crew were amazing with guests and evening shows. Will definitely go again.

Everyting Irie

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The buffet was good, Italian restaurant (beef) was excellent, the steak house was also excellent. Entertainment was as expected. Areas were well maintained and clean at all times. Assistance was provided to us when we wanted to leave the resort and we were well taken care of. The only negatives were the house wine selections were only good in the Italian restaurant, and a coffee machine in the room would be nice. Awesome place to enjoy

The wife and I had an amazing stay here, very nice rooms with mini bar restocked as you like, pool is huge and greatly designed, great entertainment, awesome beach.. definitely on everyone’s bucket list... thank you

Good value

Grounds well kept, good choice at the buffet restaurant but frustrating trying to get dinner at Japanese and or Italian. The fact that the later are closed 2 days during the week leaves very little time to enjoy. Rooms are clean and spacious. Lots of lounge chairs. Montego bay is not recommended if you are going for the beaches. They are man made and dirty brownish color. Remember the airport is 15 minutes away...... so the noise can be annoying sometimes.

Nice Resort

This hotel is very close to the airport. (5 mins away) planes pass by taking off roughly every 10 mins depending on the day. The people in the resort make the resort. The grounds are nice, the rooms are decent, never used the spa or gym so not sure how it is there. Everyone is just so polite and making sure your having a great time. The food was ok if I had to compare it to the other hotels that I've stayed. It wasn't full on Jamaican food. There was barely any beef patties. I used to see the [... read more]m in another resort everyday during lunch by the pool. (My cousin was looking forward to eating them). Jerk chicken by the pool was not bad. Jamaica is known for their fruit. Papaya I saw which I was happy. Didn't see any mangos, & coconut. They had pineapple but it didn't taste ripe, they were still hard. They had other Tropical fruit but not my cup of tea. The beach is small, thank god the pool is pretty big, & everyone went or there would be difficult to find a spot. Pool is very spacious & lots of chair for everyone. I was disappointed that we (riu Montego bay) weren't allowed to go across to Riu palace or Riu reggae but both those resorts were allowed to come to us. Not sure if I missed anything else. I would go back to Montego Bay but probably not to this resort. (This resort will be adults only after April)

People were awesome , Sunwing and food ok

The servers and entertainers were very sweet and entertaining. But the food and amenities were ok. The shows were very good, the bartenders were awesome, the waiters were amazing, the food was ok. Our room was musty. We had to fight for three beds even though we were paying for three adults. The cleaners were good. But room was musty. And decor was out of date and food had a lot of msg. We had trouble with Sunwing: I pre booked extra legroom seats after paying extra for the privilege and paying  [... read more]extra for the seats when I booked them, only to find out that Sunwing switched our flight home to a tiny Swiss plane and bumped us back to crappy seats but kept our money! I'm currently fighting with Sunwing for a refund.

Great Family Vacation

We went to this resort as a party of 12 for a vow renewal. We were upgraded to a suite because of our renewal and our room was beautiful. 2 of the rooms in our group had a musty smell (building #1). Our group didn't complain though as they were not in the room a lot of the time. Food was amazing in all of the restaurants, our favorite was the Italian. Entertainment staff were great at getting people involved as well as coming by each morning and saying "good morning" to everyone. Shout out to Chocolate, Abigail, and Purple from the entertainment staff and a very special thank you to Darrin in the buffet for breakfast and Shakira in the Italian restaurant. (She amazinginly remembered all 12 peoples orders - drinks included - from our meal 3 nights before) absolutely blew us away My only complaint was that they need more washrooms. There are only 2. One at the lunch buffet, and one in the lobby. Makes for either wet bathing suits tracking up to the lobby during the day or (I'm sure) people just going in the pool. Perhaps when they renovate they can add a washroom by the pool and one on the beach??

Fantastic time

Love love love the RIU resorts. The RIU Montego Bay is an older resort but apart from the rooms, you wouldn’t really know. The furniture is the give a way as it’s old style but the rooms are Kept very clean. Bathtubs are dangerous with no rubber mats, especially for seniors. Walk in showers hopefully will be in all rooms when this resort is renovated next year. Only one elevator worked in our building and that was questionable as to how long LOL it creaked, groaned and thumped each time. Th [... read more]e grounds are lovely, smaller resort so not a whole lot of walking. Beach is lovely, however it is not a long one to walk. All staff are very friendly and eager to please. Especially in the restaurants and bars. Entertainment crew are fantastic. We had so much fun. As repeat guests at other locations we always got a bottle of nice wine or champagne, fruit plate sent to our room, this location did not acknowledge this. Was surprised that you couldn’t get mimosas at breakfast, infact the only time we saw champagne was at our daughters vow renewal celebration. Out of the three “a la carte” restaurants there was only one that was, and at that it was only the main meal that was served to you. All in all really had a great time, we travelled the week of August 25-September 1,2019. Family of 12.

Beautiful resort.

Personally I think that this resort is beautiful . Not just for couples but amazing for families as well. The staffs ,security and our sunwing rep was amazing. For example I had forgotten one piece of my luggage on the bus that took us from the airport to the hotel and realized it was missing only after the driver drove off. I mentioned it to the bell man and also to the front desk. They told me that they don't have a direct number for the driver however they assured me that they would pass the  [... read more]info to my rep, who did actually worked hard on my case. after 2-3 days of calling,texting and emailing the company finally my bag was found. I was so happy and greatful. Excellent customer service!! Rooms were very clean and up to date. Beds were comfortable and firm .The air conditioner was very good as well. The buffet was always great, lots of varieties to choose from. Meals was delicious and hot. Dessert was also delicious and tasty. The pool was clean and beautiful. Filled with couples and families having a great time. Amazing and friendly staff, will definitely recommend this resort. Can't wait to visit against. :)

I want to go back

The Hotel Roy was amazing. The entertainment team make it a priority to make sure people are not only relaxed but are having a good time. The pool and beach are beautiful and they had a lot of options for excursions. The food was also amazing.

The beauty of the people

I was able to visit the Riu in Montego Jamaica along with my family in May 2019. We arrived mid afternoon with a welcoming smile from sunswing staff and she was able to guide us to the front desk to check in right away. Then a kind gentleman took our languages and walked us to our rooms, on our walk he asked us our name, where we from, is it our first here and so on. I travel often and see people doing there jobs just because they have to but you can see that they don’t want to be there. Everyone of the staff from house keeping, dining, bartenders, landscaping, towel attendee, lifeguards and especially the entertaining crew were AMAZING. I would call a few names but I don’t want to leave anyone out. They were friendly, kind, approachable, helpful, supportive, open to communicate and interacts with all there guest of all ages. Another thing that I loved about the staff is that they never made you feel that you needed to tip them and when you did they appreciated it. I didn’t give each time but I got them same kind smile which never changed. The food was good but the environment brought me and my family such joy and I would recommend anyone to experience it. I hope whom ever is reading this will share my review with the staff and express to the how great of a job they are doing. I will continue to brag about my trip to everyone I know n don’t know.
