My favourite resort we have been to in Cancun. The food was amazing, staff was super friendly and welcoming. COVID protocols were in place and we felt very safe there. Would definitely come back again

Riu Vallarta: excellent resort
the upgrades over the past year and a half have improved the esthetics of the resort. staff are very friendly and helpful. from the moment you walk in the door, marco polo, was as friendly as ive ever had in PV to Eli and Karen in the buffet restaurant were exceptional. it was a pleasure not having to book a reservation for the a la carte four restaurants.

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal: Great family reunion
So wonderful to travel to an all inclusive again after and unfortunately during COVID. The resort responded very well to these times. Staff always had masks on, we needed masks to enter dining facilities, with a disposable plastic glove to use gathering food at the buffet. Capacity was also limited. The actual PCR test required long line ups even though appointments were scheduled. However we received the results in due time. Please note, if you pay in pesos you save a lot of money!
In general,[... read more] the lush well kept grounds, friendly hard working staff, excellent shows, and great food were of a high standard.
The down sides were, hard to book restaurants and at times not enough transport between the resorts. And you do want to go between the resorts as they offer different activities.
Enjoy

Sandos Caracol Nature Resort and Water Park: Beautiful resort
Really enjoyed all the included activities. So much to do you don’t even need to leave the resort. Everything very clean and well maintained. Room was nice, clean, fridge stocked, water bottle in room. All restaurants had good food, buffet had good variety. Restaurant at pool also good, almost same thing everyday ( hamburgers and hotdogs etc). Did free shopping tour, pretty interesting. Have to stay 45 minutes at jewellery store, 30 minutes at Tequila store (free tequila tasting which was ac[... read more]tually interesting and fun) and then they leave you in Playa de Carmen for a couple of hours with access to a beach club ( where we had a delicious lunch on the beach) would recommend this. Or just a taxi to 5th avenue in Playa de Carmen.
Just walking thru the paths in the resort was great, vegetation and natural beauty of the mangroves, the cenote, the jade River, the Mayan ruins, lots to explore.
I would recommend this resort for anyone, children will love it.

Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres: Great resort
The hotel was wonderful. We had an amazing stay at Majestic. The staff were very accommodating friendly and always greeting us with a smile no matter the day and time. There was a great variety of food, endless drinks and entertainment. The only downside would be the state of the bathroom in the suite. While the sink and tub areas were spotless, We were disappointed to see that the toilet and shower area were quite nasty. No matter how many times we had them cleaned, it just looked old crusty an[... read more]d dirty, not worthy of a 5 star hotel. I hope they get to revamp them soon.

The facilities are new and well appointed, but the area is underdeveloped and thus shows some fairly ugly wounds eg unfinished resort 500 ft from the hotel and rotting grasses on the beach as a result

Days 2 to 4 of our week long stay we did not have hot water in our shower. The door to our room came off the hinge on day 4. The ceiling fan functioned poorly. The TV didn't work at all. The hotel is in need or repairs throughout.

Secrets Huatulco: Could be great.
The hotel is now 10 years old, and needs attention to details if it wants to be viewed as 4.5 star. The rooms and furniture are dated, and the restaurants need a complete revamp, including menus and ambiance. Covid has put a damper on investment I’m sure, but now is the time to upgrade. Towels at the pool are wearing out, and the lounges have seen better days. It’s a beautiful setting with and amazing setup, but it is running at a 3.5 star presently. Hoping that Hyatt purchasing it will inje[... read more]ct some new investment.

Riu Tequila: 5 STAR RESORT
Hotel was refreshed recently. New beds and furniture including washroom and shower. It was very nice. Even tho beach was a short walk it was well worth it, I would stay at it again. Food and bars were amazing as so was the service. Only thing that grossed me out was the swim up bar at the pool as it had a different tint to it as I suspect most guests would not use the washroom.

Bahia Principe Explore Coba: Great stay again
This was a great stay for us. Be warned, the resort is large. I logged the distance around the coba and its around 1.5 km, so get ready for some walking. There are carts which can take you to various locations, but their primary purpose is to take guests to the beach, to the main Hacienda (store/ entrance) and to the other resort lobbies.
The staff were very prepared for the increased health situations, with all of them being masked, and temperature checks being done at the buffets.
[... read more]The food was great, and we got the selection of the a la cartes that we wanted. Note: i would recommend downloading the app for the resort. Once you have your reservation confirmation, you were able, five days prior to arrival, to check in with a lot of information and also book a la cartes. Its also had the schedule of entertainment for the resort, which was quite handy, as the resort had good wi-fi coverage in most places, which is good considering the size.

Royalton Hideaway Riviera Cancun: Big Hotel
It was our special birthdays and some one had mentioned this 5 star hotel Adults Only you pay a little more but you get treated like a King. first of all its a Big Hotel ,They have a section called Diamond Club hideaway for Adults Only to get pampered but you really dont, you get a day shift and a evening shift butler, We seen our Butler the first day and then that was it,we couldn't find him or get a hold of him.In one week we called four times for service to have our in room bar stock with wat[... read more]er,three of the time we decided to get our own water after waiting a long time. All the entertainment being adults or children are all done together that goes for the buffet and everything else, there wasn't that much of a concern there about Covid the hand sanitizer that were on the wall next the the elevator, 3/4 of the containers were empty ,ever though my wife asked numerous times to have them filled The buffet was a free for all,no protection in order everyone use the same tongues to pick up what the wanted. the beaches weren't combed there was weeds all over, it rained for two days the lobby was shoulder to shoulder, My friends went to Cuba at the same time at a adults only with butler service and they said they were treated like royalty (Cuba), in my opinion thanks for the four days of heat Canun you might see me again but not at the hotel 3 1/2 - 4 at best (from other guesses they said it really was a 5 star a few years ago)

Catalonia Riviera Maya: Mixed feelings
Food was great, but unless you have a “privileged†room, you can’t use some of the bars or restaurants. And it was so busy that when we tried to book the ala cart dinners, there were none available so we had to eat at the same buffet every day. The staff were semi-friendly but not overly friendly. The rooms were okay but the bed was very uncomfortable, so bad sleeps and they started doing construction at 7:30am one morning. The beach was rocky and awful. The sand by the volleyball wasn’t[... read more] soft or deep enough. A number of people were hurt and bleeding. We also asked around for a bottled water and no one would give us any. They didn’t replace them in our fridge. Also the bars close right at 11pm and don’t open until 11am. The entertainment was poor and short…one night only half hour. I will not be recommending this place to anyone.
I would highly recommend they consider changing the language from “privilegedâ€. It is offensive.

Catalonia Riviera Maya: Great resort, very relaxing, some concerns
My girlfriend and I had a nice relaxing time a tthis resort. It is very lovely and was a great value for the area. we both had a couple things we would highlite
Her:
- food was great, healthy and delicious options
- getting access to the ala carte was very competative. you need to reserve everything as soon as you get there or you're out of luck
- There was no Wifi in the room, there is sections and rooms that do have wifi but not some of the rooms further from the main buildings,[... read more] we really needed the wifi and had none.
- Air conditioning didnt go as low as she likes
Him:
- can only get drinks from 11am to 11pm who closes the bar at 11pm!!!! I know they wanted my tips why cant I give them my money!
- resort basiclly goes to sleep at 11pm, but this is most likely what you want if you are a family, its not what I wanted though
Conclusion:
- I cant go back here despite the fact its actually a great resort, I just wanted different things from my vacation,. I would say its great though for families and people who like to go to bed early. It really really really needs to buy some more wifi extenders. such an easy fix.

Catalonia Riviera Maya: if beach is important to you, find another resort
The resort is a long way from airport and is rather small. Nowhere to take a walk. The beach is next to the pool where all the activities (talking/loud music/silly games) are, so no peace. There is just a small window of opportunity to enter the ocean on sand, with no rocks.
We paid for the "privilege" package and our room was great and we also received a bottle of champagne, chocolates and fruit as a welcome gift. Other then that did not feel like there any benefits to it. The "privilege" b[... read more]each is a joke, a very small place looking across another hotel, not the ocean!
Our room was close to one of the bars where they had live loud music late into the night. The back door had a broken lock, never got repaired.
Lots of COVID precautions, constant cleaning, painting etc, good measures.
When we left, the minibus took us to the airport with 4.5 hours before our flight. They didn't check that the flight was delayed an hour, so we spent 4 hours there, so much fun!
Food is ok, the restaurants were good, we enjoyed the experience.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination: Natures Paradise
Beautiful resort, well kept, clean, and lots of wildlife just outside your door. The salt water pools were just the right temperature to feel nice and refreshing when needing a break from the sun. The staff were super friendly, and the drinks excellent. My only issue was with the buffet restaurant. there was hand sanitizers placed at various locations, but rarely did people use them. No gloves were offered for the handles throughout the assorted food trays, therefore basically no Covid protectio[... read more]n at all except the mandatory mask rule and the temperature check upon entry. Also found the food temperature was a little cool, basically room temperature by the time I got back to my table. The coffee, juice, wine service was hit and miss, some days were excellent and others required getting up to find someone. Otherwise I fully enjoyed my stay.

Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya: Enjoyable Resort
This is neither a pro or a con but it is approx. an hour and a half bus ride to the resort although, as we arrived during rush hour and took an hour and 45 minutes.
In regards to Covid protocols, all the staff wore masks at all times, both indoors and on the beach. If you forgot your mask one was provided at every venue and you were also provided a plastic glove at the entrance to the Buffet and Beach Restaurants.
The Resort
This is a very large resort comprising 2 resorts rolled into one[... read more]. The largest part is the Riviera and the other section is the Mayan. Overall it is a lovely resort with an abundance of natural foliage and very small areas of manicured landscaping. You have the feeling of being in the jungle. There are very few shortcuts and you really have to stay on the walkways. There is a lot of walking involved in getting around this resort. This resort is very handicap aware and we found quite a few quests getting around on motorized wheelchairs. As an observation, getting to the water at the beach might pose a problem as the sand area is in 2 tiers but the pools are lovely and there are 3 available to use.
Rooms
Pros: large, well laid out, beautiful decor. Bathroom is also gorgeous. Waterfall shower is unbelievable and the water pressure and hot water are great! Beds are comfy. Plenty of seating and sleeping room. There is also a built-in desk for your laptop. The rooms also have a 45 inch flat screen tv with lots of channels. They like soccer in Mexico so you can always catch a game from most of the mainstream leagues.
Cons:
The rooms have a long built-in shelf under the tv which is nice for holding small stuff but there are no dresser drawers so you have to use your suitcase to hold things like t-shirts and underwear. You will also have to bring a face cloth (flannel for you Brits). I know Guest Services says they are supposed to be in every room but Housekeeping says not so. It’s hit or miss as to whether or not you get any. This is an observation only but the bathroom doors with the exception of the main door shut completely or lock, which makes getting ready a little more difficult when you're staying with children, or people other than your spouse. The shower doors also have a gap, which can make a mess if you aren't paying attention.
Food
Pros: between the buffets, snack bars, a la carts, room service and pizzas, you won't go hungry. You can always get pizza or burgers and fries for the pickiest eaters. There is a lot of variety. Breakfast for buffet, pizzas or beach snack bar for lunch are always a win.
Breakfast Buffet, if you want waffles you will have to get your server to get them if you are in the buffet before 8 am. The omelets are good, just made differently than in Cuba. Here they ladle the egg mixture onto the grill and saute the vegetable fixings separately. They then add the fixings onto the cooked egg and then roll it up to serve you. Of note are the smoothies, the green one was fabulous and I had one every morning, At all the buffet sittings you will find a wide variety of appetisers. We didn’t use the buffet for lunch as we elected to stay on the beach and used the beach restaurant. You could get a large assortment of items ranging from pork chops, grilled vegetables, stewed tomatoes (delicious), to hamburgers (very good patties), hotdogs, a full range of salad items, fresh fruit, and tortilla chips with chili sauce, cheese sauce and refried beans. The dinner buffet was similar to the breakfast buffet with a large assortment of appetisers and then a large assortment of entray items. You could also get something freshly grilled from pork chops, chicken and once or twice fresh fish. I should mention the desserts are extremely good, cakes are moist, rice pudding of a very high quality. The chocolate ice cream was the best I’ve ever eaten. There are lots to choose from so you can always find something you like to eat. They don’t use alot of spices so you might find the food under seasoned and not really hot, just mildly warm. You won't starve, but don't expect to be saying the food is great all the time. It's good and edible. Some things are hit and miss.
Con for me is that there is very little in the way of fresh grilled fish either in the Beach Restaurant or the Buffet.
The Restaurants
We got to eat in all except the French Restaurant as it’s for members only. My ratings are as follows:
The Japanese was by far the best. The chefs were skillful and very entertaining in their presentation. I had the octopus. Fantastic.
The Mexican I had a dish native to the area, it was roast pork and the flavours, omg.
The Mediterranean, both of us had the seafood platter, featuring a full squid (calamari), mussels, shrimp, clams, a fillet of fish and an oyster in a sauce. One serving would have fed us both and still had left overs.
The Steakhouse
My partner had the T-bone steak and it was cooked perfectly to a delightful medium rare with the medium slanted to the rare. I had the beef rib which was tough and dry. They are getting better at cooking beef but they have a long way to go.
The Italian was good, I had the lasagna, it was very meaty and I elected not to have the soup as it was just too much food for me. My partner had the ravioli and really liked it.
The Brazilian restaurant was good but it's a lot of meat. You get chicken wings, then 2 different sausages, chicken breast, beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin, brazilian beef, and cooked pineapple. It was too bad that they over cooked the brazilian beef as it is known to be some of the best beef in the world.
The Thia
This was the worst meal I had at the resort, Simply awful. My partner had the fish dish which he liked so not everything on the menu is bad.
Beach
Pros: water is nice. Beautiful view. Nice location. Snorkeling was ok, but to be fair I believe there were storms at sea most of the second week which made it a little hazy, but def had a good time when we went.
Cons: I reserved our beach chairs and umbrella each morning by getting to the beach at 6 am and usually by 6:45 all the lounges were reserved. Of note, I saw a lot of sunrises. They need more chairs for the beach. There's just not enough to accommodate the crowd they have even by half or less.
Pools/games
Pros: pools are large and well taken care of. They had multiple games during the day and entertainment. Animation team organized lots of beach volleyball and the ball was always available for anyone who wanted to organize a game.
Bars
Pros: The drinks are strong and the service is great. The bartenders and waitresses will NEVER let your drink go empty, even on the busiest of nights. That also includes the beach service. My favourite place in the evening was the patio in front of the Coffee Shop, great coffee, live entertainment and you can smoke your cigar. It was lovely.
Cons: Not every bar made good mixed drinks, Lobby bar was the best. I asked for a gin and tonic in the Sky Bar and it was made with sprite, not nice. As I’m not much for a mixed drink I was disappointed in the alcohol that was available. If I stay there again, I will bring a bottle of my preferred beverage and bring a flash to the bar.
Entertainment,There is a large theatre, it has many tiers so it will accommodate a large number of people. There is a show every night on a 7 day rotation. I only watched the Rock show which I enjoyed. Starting at 7:30 there is a singer or small duet at the coffee shop stage, at 9 is the theater show and then at 10 there is some entertainment in the Sky Bar.There is usually some entertainment in the Lobby Bar. The other night it was a sax player.
Overall the staff is impeccable. The grounds have for the most part been left in it’s natural state, the wildlife is fantastic. There isn’t anything that would make me say don’t at least try this place out and decide for yourself. The minute complaints I have can be out weighted by all the positives. We would more than likely return if our travel companions wanted to go to this resort and I would anticipate anyone else who tries it would also.
