Melia Trinidad Peninsula: Another Melia Jewel

I visited the Melia Trinidad between Apr. 5-12. Nothing but good things to say . Being a new hotel (The Level rooms are not quite complete ) it is clean, modern, beautiful and very comfortable. Hats off to the designers for creating a lovely , bright hotel. The bed was so comfortable, the shower was wonderful, the fridge was restocked every day and the ocean view was marvellous. The gym is well fitted and c [... read more]leaned constantly , with an adjoining, sauna and steam room and showers. The restaurants are all beautifully designed and offer very nice food. There is absolutely no shortage of great food, unlike many of the other Cuban resorts at this time. The food and beverage manager is constantly on the move making sure that the service is of a high standard. The wines are primarily from Spain ( Melia is a Spanish chain ) and the champagne is plentiful . Coffees and drinks are all done very well in all of the many bars. Serving staff and the maid that I had were ALL warm and polite and hard working. Personally, I didn't take any of the excursions, as I was there to disconnect, but those that did all came back with good reports. The entertainment was varied and many were quite good ! There was one day that the DJ was pumping up the music quite loud around a pool party , but that was just a temporary disturbance :) , I am 70, ha ha. BTW, I landed in Santa Clara airport during the daylight hours and really enjoyed the 2 1/2 hour transfer through the mountains to the hotel. Be warned, there was no washroom on the bus , if you know what I mean. The only negative of this property is the beach. Great to look at but very rocky for playing in. Overall, I would say, this hotel is well worth visiting, especially if you are a pool person, looking to be pampered !

Sol Palmeras: Spectacular Resort!

This is not our first visit to this resort and it won't be our last. We keep returning because it is very safe and comfortable. The food is good and varied and is dependant on what food is available in the country. The rooms are well kept and clean notwithstanding the hotel is under partial renovation currently. Even though our area was having some minor renovations, it was never any bother for us. The grounds are kept pristine and workers are constantly grooming the landscape. The pools an [... read more]d pool area is clean and well maintained. Veradero beach can't be beat! We spent many hours walking on its sandy shores. Our most important reason for returning to Sol Palmeras would have to be because of the wonderful staff. They are the friendliest, kindest and most accommodating and will help with any situation. We have made friends with many staff and some have become like family. We would definitely recommend this family friendly resort.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Fantastic Vacation!

Our first time at this resort, not our first time in Cuba and we were impressed. Despite the shortages and issue they are dealing with, we had everything we needed to enjoy the week. Plenty of food, we took spices and condiments. Lots of great drinks and COLD beer! We’ve never been to anything higher than 3 star so we were definitely impressed and will be back to Cuba!

Sol Rio de Luna y Mares: Returning guests

4th time back, can’t wait till the Reno is done, but it did not effect the amazing atmosphere of Sol Rio, the beautiful surroundings, beach and the staff are what makes this place special and keeps us coming back.. now, to be brutally honest as I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews.. IF YOU ARE a picky eater, perhaps Cuba is not for you, but if not there’s tons of amazing food to choose from every day! Rice, pasta, chicken, pork, fish, salads and fresh fruits!! Melia Varadero: Amazing Resort! Exceeded expectations

This is my 1st vacation to Varadero/Cuba and was so lucky to land Melia Varadero...Such an mazing stay, service, and all...I would not say too much as what has already been mentioned here by others and in details...a unique experience and get away. Whether its food, restaurants, rooms, bars, entertainments, grounds or beach...it was just all together top of the top! Sol Cayo Santa Maria: Naturalist Cuban Paradise

We had a fantastic, unforgettable, time in Cuba, March 27-April 7, 2024. (long review, multiple Sub-Topics). Beautiful beaches and fantastic weather. In regards to the resort, we can only compare it to our experience from last year at a 5-Star Resort, Melia Buenavista. Both resorts are small and are Adult Only. SOL changed from family after Covid. Both have Naturist beach sections. Of course it is an unfair comparison but the resorts are near each other and both operate by the same Foreign C [... read more]orporation. First, I should point out I did a surprise Marriage Proposal while in Cuba. A country we are both truly happy and ecstatic to visit. EXCURSIONS We met the Air Transat Representative the first morning. The times he is there are posted beside the lobby desk. We immediately booked the Tuesday, Sunset Lobster Dinner Catamaran Cruise and it is when we got engaged to be married. NOTE, sunset was on the Catamaran and dinner was at One Gallery Resort at 9pm. (bring snacks). A heads up to everyone regarding the Saturday, Havana Bus Excursion. We spoke to the Air Transat rep, Rusbel Santiago, and told him we wanted to go to Havana. He said there was a Saturday bus tour going. We said we would prefer to fly there. He said Air Transat does not support that tour. We asked how long the bus ride is each way and he said 4.5 hours, in fact it is closer to 5.5 hours. Again we said we prefer plane. The total excursion was 21 hour trip (Rusbel had suggested it was 15 hours). I asked for link about the tour and I never received it. I also asked if the price was Canadian and he said yes. After the credit card alert came through it was US$. During the trip we spoke with our tour guide, I discovered that the SAME TOUR GUIDE does the Wednesday Havana Plane Tour Excursion, 12 hour total trip! And the difference in cost was only about $20 more each. I was furious that Rusbel did not have the courtesy to tell us about it. He knew about it because he is friends with the tour guide as the tour guide joked that Rusbel has a huge appetite. The guide kept referring to Rusbel as one of his Salesman! You cannot believe everything Rusbel tells you. He skirts on the truth, I believe he had personal interests in having us book through him on the bus verses on the plane through someone else. I kick myself for not doing research and having blind faith that everyone is looking after your best interest. That is certainly not the case in this experience. My Fiance did not recover from the grueling long bus ride for another whole day. For the Havana Plane Tour go next door to Melia Cayo Santa Maria (CSM) at 9am and speak with their Excursion Representative at their desk in the main lobby. ROOMS The rooms are newly renovated, they look fresh and modern. They have these cool blue LED lights around the room, NOTE, they can be turned off; there is a small metal button on the wall (near the lights) that looks like a dime inside a quarter. You need only TOUCH them to turn OFF/ON the lights. (capacitance switch). NOTE, they are still running on the infrastructure of 70 years ago (I do not think the sewer stacks were changed inside the building; an oversight they may regret in the near future). The hot water supply/pipes are old, one room barely had luke warm water. Unfortunately, we had to change rooms at SOL three times for various reasons. Yes, an inconvenience but was worth it as we finally were happily settled after the fourth night. WIFI Unfortunately, WIFI signal strength varied, room to room. If you require a good signal, check it before you unpack. WIFI was great in the general lobby area and buffet restaurant. FOOD I did not have any issues with food there for both years even though I'm a fussy eater; I go to Cuba expecting less due to possible shortages and prepared for it. (more later in this). My beautiful Fiance on the other hand had issues last year at the 5-star and no issues this year. We were there for 11 nights and eggs were not available on only two mornings. That's incredible considering the neighbour Melia CSM never seemed to have any eggs! Bring your own Ketchup. SHORTAGES Items mentioned below occurred during our stay but keep in mind that things change on a daily and weekly basis. COFFEE Coffee on the other hand was less available. We knew this might be an issue because we joined an active FB group, "Friends of Sol CSM". So in preparation we purchased a 220V portable kettle and McDonald's instant coffee from Amazon. Best thing we ever did. Made coffee in 4 minutes every morning! PIZZA I give this a separate topic because it was something that was mentioned numerous times by many repeat guests. The SOL has an actual Pizza Building on the resort with tables and chairs. Unfortunately, it was not open during our stay. We heard it was open earlier in the year but it closed because they lost their water supply to that location. The SOL main restaurant/buffet building also had a Pizza Oven! But again it was not being used. A guest that was there in December said it was working then and there were constant long lines for their delicious pizza. WATER There is another shortage that was not mentioned. Bottled water. Our first day, we were provided in the room, a large bottle of water, the next day, two small bottles. After that none. Each night we had to scout places and ways to get water. Not the easiest task. There appears to be internal struggles between the front desk, bar and restaurant. Instead of helping front desk with client requests, they do not share the valuable commodity. So seek your own source of water and remember a tip goes a long way. TOILET PAPER Toilet paper is a rare item throughout Cuba as we discovered on a day trip to Havana. Bring a couple of rolls for back up, even for your room! Ladies may want to carry the Kleenex travel packs with them at ALL times. FRESH BREAD/BUNS Fortunately, this is baked daily at SOL and there were never any ingredient shortages. And wow, their buns are delicious. REPAIRS Repairs /maintenance seems to be hit or miss. Usually miss, but that is expected as it is a small resort and it is likely not feasible to have a full time handyman. FRONT DESK Speaking of front desk, the STAFF really tries hard to help you but it seems that they are not given the AUTHORITY to actually get things done. Each request seems to pass through one manager to another and then await approval. Unlike last year at the 5-star we had two butlers assigned to our needs, (alternated days but they communicated to each other); there, all of our requests were taken care of immediately without question. DOCTOR There is no doctor on-site. The on-site Doctor at Melia CSM next door is available for SOL guests; ask front desk for a shuttle ride; 24/7. I used this service for a broken blood vessel that kept getting bigger and also had a cut on my foot that needed disinfecting. There was no charge for the service but the Doctor glady accepted the $5CAD tip that I insisted she take. And since the bell boy, Raul, waited for me and drove me back, he got a tip too; it was late evening and the Melia CSM 24 hour restaurant was not busy so I got two pizzas to go! Staff & TIPS Take the time to talk to the staff and learn a bit of their way of life. It may open your eyes to their struggles and it makes your minor inconveniences seem petty. We were constantly looking for ways to tip and which dollar store gift to give to whom so they appreciate it more because they really needed it. You can really tell when you give a gift that they needed; their reaction and smile is very heart warming. Currency When it comes to money, bring bills that have NO CREASES, rips, cuts, pen marks, etc. The Cubian banks are very, very fussy and will not accept bills with visible worn creases. One guest we met actually ordered new uncirculated $5CAD bills from the bank a week before going. LOONIES & TWOONIES Sure, you can bring loonies and twoonies for tips but you better buy them back with bills when you get asked. Personally, we prefer using US$ bills as it is less weight and cumbersome. Just before you leave to come home to Canada, go around and offer to purchase old bills or coins from the staff to help them. So bring extra new looking $20 bills for this purpose. FLEA MARKET WARNING, if you go to the Flea Market, they do not have credit card POS terminals. Cash only, US cash to be specific. Most places will charge you DOUBLE the US price if you pay in CAD$. CREDIT CARDS Oh, all purchases with credit cards will require your signature even though you have to use a PIN. I suppose the banks want that extra security in case you dispute the charges. And they do not give you an itemized POS receipt like they do here. It's just a copy of the credit card slip. If you like keeping track of purchases, bring a pen with you. PALAPALAS ON NATURIST SIDE A strange thing started happening on the Naturist beach. There was always overflow in the number of people verses Palapalas. We started waking up at 5am to reserve a place we preferred. Each time I ran into 4 or 5 others at that time of morning doing the same! The Naturist sign position has become Dynamic in that it seems to move daily. But each day you can see there is overflow into the Textile section. The Naturist side has grown significantly compared to last year. It spans almost to the Beach Bar now. REIKI MASTER If you have a minor health issues, book a Reiki treatment with Roberto in The Gym. He is a 19-year Reiki Master and receives yearly, a two week refresher/update training, from his Master. Without knowing in advance Roberto told me of what he found with my body! He even mentioned something I did not know and will have to get checked by an MD here. GYM If you are a fitness fanatic, they have a state of art Gym with the latest new equipment! Super surprising considering the shortages of consumables they experience on a daily basis. New equipment arrived while we were there! EVENINGS There are biting insects when the sun goes down; bring insect repellent with you. We used Muskol, others had Off. If it has 15% Deet, it works well. ENTERTAINMENT There was no April calendar of events (saw one for March). It seemed hit or miss if there was going to be a 9:30 show. It seems they try to book shows but they may not show up. At the minimum there was usually music and line dancing lessons. YES, We recommend going there if you are a Naturist. Remember, you are going for the sun, beaches, weather and kind hospitality of the Cubans. Do not expect to have unlimited options in food choices. Do not expect to have all the amenities you have in Canada. Be thankful for what you do get and enjoy yourself. SOL, has the potential to be much more for Naturist. But limitations from the government may not allow it.

Melia Peninsula Varadero: No bed sheets!

This is not at all a 4 or 4.5 hotel this is a 1-2 stars. For starters the keys to the room was given to us with no details of anything (no map, no instructions on how to access wifi, nothing!). The room did not have any sheets I complain 3 times and every time they said “okay we are bringing them to you” the 4 nights pass and we never got them. Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Everything perfect

For the price you pay,nothing to complain..workers are amazing, beach is spectacular..we go back next month..yoandry beach bar good food cooked by Gerly the chef who make miracle..good servi by jorge too..lobby bar worker are excellent. Can't name all of them ,customers service excellent..I can't complain..for the price it's unbelievable we get a clean room with AC..lol..real travelers will not complain at all..

Melia Peninsula Varadero: Wonderful Vacation

Travelled March 23-30. This resort is a nice size. Easily walk to the buffets and restaurants to beach to pool. We were in building closest to beach. The beach is gorgeous! One of the best. There was always lots of beach chairs and hen we were there. It was pretty windy all week so were not able to take out the kayaks or catamarans etc. but still lovely. The pool is nice however the only complaint there would be that they do not have many chairs around the pool. There is plenty of room to h [... read more]ave more chairs but we just put our stuff on the cement stairs and stayed in the water so not a huge deal. The food was actually better than expected. There’s always something to eat. There was egg every morning at the omelette station and lots of other choices. The coffee at the bar beside the buffet is much better than the coffee they give you in the buffet! The entertainment was ok. There was a show each night in or outside of the lobby. The rooms were the worst part. Our room was ground floor. There was mold and mildew in the closet and water dripping from the air conditioner. The beds were not the most comfortable but were fine. Water leaked all over the floor after every shower. Our maid was great though. We always had toilet paper and towels and water n the room. Our safe worked and the door locked. No issues with our key cards. All in all we had a great vacation. The staff were great! So friendly. And the price was great.

Sol Caribe Beach: Great stay at this modern style resort

Everything in this resort is as advertised. We stayed at the building number one on third floor. There are two elevators for those who don't like climbing the stairs. The room was spacious, modern and clean with two double beds which were very comfortable. The view from the room was fantastic. The bathroom was spacious and modern too. We don't have any complaints regarding bathroom towels, toilet paper and water bottles. Jade, the hard working maid was in charge of our room and she did a great  [... read more]job. We spent most of our time on the beautiful beach. We watched shows in the evening from our balcony. The entertainment ended up at 11p.m. and we had great night sleep. No complaints about food since the change suited us well. The only set back in the buffet restaurant, The Kitchen, is hygiene of dishes. Sometimes there was coffee or lipstik residue in/or on the edges of cups or glasses. Plates did not look clean to me, but that might be a due to the hardness of water. There is also a lack of beach towels which wasn't the issue for us. We used our own beach towels for two days, and we got their beach towels the third day in the morning. We were checking up couple of times per day until they finely got clean towels. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay at this beautiful resort.

Melia Cayo Coco: Amazing Vacation!!! Thank you Melia Cayo Coco!

My husband and I have not been to Cuba since COVID struck so decided to go for two weeks and we were not disappointed! We thoroughly enjoyed this Resort. Considering the food shortages, etc. in Cuba we were fed really well and were grateful for that. The Staff go above and beyond to make sure we are very well looked after. They are a real asset to the Melia Family. The Resort was spotless as were our rooms. The rooms are a little tired, but clean. In our 14 days we only had two issue [... read more]s which was both with our room key/lock. A maintenance staff member arrived quite quickly on both issues and fixed us up! We spent every day on the beach which was absolutely breathtaking. Only had one morning of rain which didn't dampen our spirits one bit! The beach is clean with lots of garbage/ashtrays available. The smoking/non-smoking areas are a bonus. The entertainment... Wow! There was always something going on in the main lobby in the early evening and then at the Theatre. In the mornings you could hear the soft music of the Sax being played from the pool area. I found it very relaxing down on the beach. The "Rock" night band was our favorite. They had everyone up dancing and singing along. So much fun :-) I especially loved the size of the Resort. Easy to get around and easy to meet other guests. The Resort is very well lit at night and the gardeners truly do a beautiful job of keeping the grounds well kept and clean. We only had a few disappointments. One was the depth of the pool. Very shallow. However, I understand that this is one of their Capital Projects to redo the pool so not a biggy in our eyes. Besides, we are beach people. Another disappointment (which I have always had in Cuba), is other guests! 85% are great, but 15% can be so rude to the hardworking staff which really upsets me as they work so hard to please us. All in all, I would highly recommend this Resort and will be back! The Staff make this Resort so special and I would like to give a "shout out" to a few of them who made our vacation the best ever. Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Amazing beach

The grounds were so well taken care of, it is beautiful. Lobby and restaurant are very nice. The rooms are a bit dated and could be cleaner. The floors were not cleaned ever day but overall acceptable as we only were there to wash and sleep.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Very nice resort

Spacious rooms, grounds well kept. Liked the rooms as they all have screens on the balcony doors. Nice for families and people that have mobility issues as it is easy to move around with strollers and wheelchairs. The beach is awesome as there is area for snorkelling and sandy area. Entertainment was great, there was always something for everyone. Lots of lounge chairs and shaded areas on the beach. No need to rush to get good spot.

Melia Cayo Coco: Smooth and Relaxing

Older clientele and couples made the vibe relaxing and quiet it was perfect! Nice and quiet by 11pm, but still excellent entertainment and a 24hr bar. Well trained staff, professional and friendly. Hotel is smaller with beautiful grounds and lobby. Room was clean, safe and functional. Beach is spectacular, plenty of chairs in the shade, if you show up later will still find a spot, just need to walk a little further. Plenty of food options (only ate at buffet), no shortages that I was aware of. What management has accomplished given the challenges Cuba faces is amazing.

Melia Trinidad Peninsula: Lovely new resort

This resort was fresh, very clean, and not full of people. It seemed to be running at about 1/3 capacity. It was the perfect amount of people. We didnt fight for lounge chairs at all. They were always available. There are many pools - lots of swimming choices. The pool water is a nice but cooler temperature. The beach is very rough and covered in shells and broken coral. Beach shoes are a must. There is a bit of a hill to walk down from the beach to the water. Food was ok - not alot of variety.  [... read more]I was surprised at how small the buffets are for such a large resort. Fresh fish available to pick from and be cooked on demand if interested. Always pasta, rice, beans, a lot of ham, chicken, some beef - desserts were ok but all tasted the same to me. Ive found you dont book a trip to Cuba if youre a foodie - so just remember that if you do come to Cuba. Bring your own chips and snacks - all thats available for purchase in the gift shop for snacks are Celebration Cookies (vanilla wafer covered with milk chocolate, or mocha). Other items available in the gift shop were bikinis, water, beer, apple juice, shampoo, sun hats, beach bags, a few tshirts, a couple different souvenir items, lotions, perfumes and maxi pads. You wont find tampons in Cuba ladies so dont forget to bring your own, and leave a bunch for the ladies who work here. The snack bar only offers 4 items: hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza or a sandwich. Some days they had fish tacos sitting out. Bring your own mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper, and peanut butter - seriously - theres little to be found here. Bring sunscreen. The UV was 11 almost every day. I burned in 3 minutes with SPF 50 sunscreen on. Because this place only opened in November, half of the resort isnt completed yet. This doesnt affect anything, except one day I heard a saw or something super loud being used right outside our rooms at 9am. Lisdany at the Gift Shop is a lovely person - show her some monetary appreciation when you stop by. We didnt head off-resort to comment on that, but the guy on our bus to the airport did talk alot about how little cubans have, and how money is their biggest need. If you decide to bring gifts for the cuban workers, please dont forget about the gardeners, pool guys, security guards and the people working in the kitchen. They could all use a monetary act of kindness. The maids always get all the love so broaden your view of the others that work here. Also, bring lots of medicine for the cuban people - they cant get what they need so extra strength tylenol, childrens tylenol, tylenol arthritis, pepto bismol, bandaids, and any other type of OTC medicine that could be useful to a family with small children (fever, stomach/gastro issues), adults and elderly folks. They really do appreciate every offering. Bring tins of cat food if you can. There are 5-6 stray tiny cats that come by begging for food every breakfast and dinner. Go down to the beach and look for the little hermit crabs - theyre so interesting to watch. Bring a LITTLE floaty for the pool - you cant buy these here either. You dont need electrical gadgets for the plugs if youre coming from canada - the plugs are fine to use our electronic stuff with. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom. Remember if youre going to be in the same room with friends, the shower is pretty see-through from the main bedroom - bring a white shower curtain and a few of those hooks that suction onto glass to block it off. There are two shallow pools for very small children. There is a main pool for everyone and then the other pools are in front of the rooms, so lots of options. No shade though in any of the pools for 90% of the day. At the resort its $15 usd per person per day if you wanna upgrade to a pool front room, pending availability. Just bring USD for Cuba - you dont need anything else. We had no issues with getting sick from the food, but we didnt eat fish or seafood of any kind. We ate alot of salad and pasta. Their ice cream is delish. Was told by a local its worth going into the mountains to see the waterfall but its a strenuous hike so beware of that. All in all, we enjoyed our sunshine-filled week away doing nothing but sunbathing and bobbing around in the pool.

Melia Cayo Santa Maria: Third time to the Melia CSM

We love the size of this hotel and the beach is fantastic, large, and great for walking. Morning coffees to start your day is a must. Food was as expected. Disappointed in tripcentral not dealing with my booking promotion adjustments.

Tryp Cayo Coco: A lot of improvements!!!

Tryp has always been a favourite Cuban destination of ours. We've been there about 10 times and it never disappoints. Granted over the years, hurricanes and covid knocked the wind out of the sails...but the staff has always been welcoming. The resort is coming back to the way it was years ago....no little task given the times. This visit we see a new beach restaurant underway, the stage is being rebuilt, plans for poolside upgrades. Lobby upgrades underway. New sails replace the beautiful roo [... read more]f that was blown away years ago. Entertainment staff was spot on, high energy and fun. Erlin at the swim up bar was amazing, friendly, and a hard worker. Buffet staff attentive, friendly and fun, our regular Belkis even went out of her way to bake a cake for my husband. Midiala warm and friendly. Buffet was clean and fully stocked. No shortages here. Bars were fully stocked, again NO SHORTAGES of anything. Beaches clean, pool clean, grounds clean. Our room was clean and updated. Anything that was wrong (mini fridge didn't work) was fixed immediately. Alexander and Juan at the ala carts were very attentive and friendly. Highly recommend Tryp.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Beautiful resort!

We thought the rooms were spacious and clean. The bed was king size and new. No problem getting chairs at the pool or the beach. Front desk staff were helpful and spoke English better than many. Food shortages continue to be an issue. Book your al-a-carts and keep an open mind. Our sixth time to Cuba and we would go back to Paradisus Del Mar.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Worth a second trip!

Beautiful grounds, great beach, good entertainment and friendly staff! Have never went to the same resort twice but I would consider going here again. Met lots of repeat guests who confirmed this happens alot!

The grounds are beautiful and the staff at the resort were very friendly! Once the beach is leveled and cleaned up a little it will be better but I have no complaints at all for we were informed that this side of the island beach is a little rocky, but it was still beautiful regardless.
