Royalton Hideaway Riviera Cancun: Not what we expected
Too crowded and TOO noisy, a lot of drunk people misbehaved in the halls after 10 PM. Dirty beaches: seaweed all over the place and wastewater from mangrove forests that prevented us from swimming in the last two days. The crew was generally welcome, helpful and professional. Good food despite the covid restrictions. Great gym. Basically, it's one big hotel with lots of pools and good entertainment. Nonetheless, I would not go there ever again and hence would not recommend it to others.

Samba Vallarta: Wonderful relaxing place to ring in the New Year.
We were at the Samba Vallarta on a fairly last minute deal to ring in 2020. They hosted a wonderful outdoor white party for New Years Eve with an awesome, extensive buffet, live band playing, dance area, party hats, etc... and fireworks and champagne at midnight.
The beach is lovely although there was a storm there on New Years Day and the water was quite rough so not many people were in it the rest of the week. We always found beach chairs and we had a great guy keeping our drinks full and[... read more] cold. We didn't really spend much time by the pool. We waited out the storm in the small lobby lounge listening to karaoke... there are not a lot of places to go at the Samba that are sheltered other than your room. There were beautiful hummingbirds on the walk to breakfast every morning.
I'm not picky so could always find something to eat on the buffet. Beach bar burgers and dogs were good. We had two ala carts - Mexican and Italian. Both very good. The Mexican is on the beach so you can watch the sunset.
We did go into Bucerias and Puerto Vallarta for 3 of our 7 nights so don't know how good the night shows were. Room was okay, older but adequate. Never spend much time in the room anyway.

TRS Yucatan: Great resort, just not what we were looking for at all!
This was a beautiful resort, just totally not what we wanted. We enjoy a pool with water aerobics, and beach right there in front of us. At the TRS Yucatan, it was a 4 kilometer ride to the beach. We tried to get moved as we have asked to do a few times in the past and had a lot of push back and waiting. Sunwing then wanted to charge us 1700. to move! The supervisor of TRS, Betty was informed we were not satisfied and did everything in her power to make us happy. I am grateful for her, she[... read more] did her best but this resort was way to big for our liking. I feel very disappointed in Trip Central and Sunwing. The first full three days were a nightmare trying to get moved. No service outside of poor Betty who really couldn't change the situation. I sent the following email in response.
"In the past 20 years, we have had 2 situations where we were unhappy with our choice and were moved within 24 hours with a charge of approximately $100.00 for both, or each of us. We are totally disgusted with the slow and useless service offered on behalf of Sunwing and will never deal with Sunwing Vacations again.
After spending over $4000.00, the service you offered was useless, giving us an option late on day 3 ( which did not land in my email until day 4 AM) and saying we would have to pay an additional $1700.00. Really poor customer service!! Tripcentral was not much better, however apparently out of the hands of our apologetic agent. Perhaps you can work on that too. We even had to choose options, if we do all of the prework, what are you (Sunwing) there for? If you cannot trust the hotels you work with, how is that our problem? This was never a problem before, in fact we were given options.
On a positive note, TRS had a supervisor contact us and Betty was amazing. I wanted to make it clear to Betty, her resort was beautiful, just not what we enjoy. We made it clear we do not like large resorts, we were told TRS was a small part of a large resort, the beach was " right next to resort" , when in fact the TRS beach was over 3.5 kilometers away, an 8 minute trolley ride. Betty tried to upgrade us, made reservations for us twice, contacted us daily to make sure we were okay. Betty was the true picture of customer service.
Finally, I want to suggest making these things clear, adult property with a beautiful beach 3 to 4 kilometers away (or 1 kilometer away if you want kids on your adult trip)."

Grand Decameron Complex Bucerias Trademark: Nothing special.
This resort is not a 4*. More like a good 3*. Too many people arriving at the same time. Rooms not available until 3pm. Had to wait. Given the wrong room & bed requirements.
The grounds were well kept. We found out after a week where they had the nightly entertainment. Lobby bar small with people watching hockey on one screen and curling on another. No music. They did not have much of any so-called international alcohol. Their house wine was decent. Food was decent too. Too much mex[... read more]ican type of food although food was abundant enough. You had to ask for bacon in the morning. They kept it hidden behind the fresh omelette station. The a la cartes were okay. Nothing authentic and most of the meat as overcooked. But one did have the option of 5 a la cartes per week.
The cleaning staff were friendly but I wasn't happy that they still entered the room even though I had the "do not enter" sign on the door.
If you are looking for a vacation that is very reasonable and pretty good value for your money... you will be overall satisfied as long as you have no expectations. There is no fridge or coffee machine in the rooms and you have to pay 50 pesos per day for the key safe. The lounge chairs on the beach are hard plastic, like the plastic stackable summer chairs so extremely hard to lie on so you'll need a floatie. All in all you are still getting good value as we probably saved upwards of 500-700 dollars for the 9 day vacation.

All Ritmo Cancun Resort And Waterpark: Great Small-Medium Resort
This hotel is off the main strip, which may or may not be to peoples preferences. It's a small-medium sized hotel. We checked in at night so its hard to get a real sense of the place but the following morning and of course over the length of our vacation we got to know it well. First of all for families its a great pick. The water park attached to the hotel is as advertised- clean, fun and everything works. There are food and drink options at the water park.
We upgraded to a beach/ocean faci[... read more]ng ground level room so we could walk right out onto the beach. It was totally worth it and reasonable in cost. The food is good- they have theme nights for dinner and the Mexican night everyone loved. There are flexible hours for all meal times and something for everyone. The staff is friendly.
The main pool is clean and we brought two 5 years olds (my son and his cousin) who had a hard time choosing between the pool, the ocean and the water park each day. The beach isn't huge but just fine for the size of the resort and they look after it by grooming the sand etc. daily. The rooms and grounds are clean and tidy.
One thing to note apparently its not a well known location for North Americans. It seems more well known by South Americans. Just a point of interest- we had a good experience and my wife would like to rebook again next year.
They have modest nightly entertainment as well which my family enjoyed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone not looking to book at a huge resort but still looking for all the basics. Even if we didn't bring kids we would still go back- its a relaxing destination. If you have kids all the better- between al the water based options, the kids club and the entertainment staff the kids went to bed exhausted each night.

Paradise Village Puerto Vallarta: Beautiful Clean Resort
We picked this resort because we liked the idea of being able to watch boats on the marina as well as be on a lovely beach and it really was a beautiful location. This was, by far, one of the cleanest resorts that we have ever stayed at in Mexico. Our studio room was large and comfortable. Unfortunately our room was right by an elevator so it was a little noisy at times but not too bad. That said, I am not certain that we would go back to this
resort. We went with an all-inclusive package and f[... read more]elt that it did not offer us the same level of service that other resorts have offered us. The buffet, while good, lacked selection that other buffets have afforded us. They only offer one a la carte restaurant reservation per week with the all-inclusive package. We chose Mayapan, and were very happy with our choice as the food was beautifully presented and delicious. We had asked for a glass of house wine with our meal, which was great, but we could not get service to get a second glass. We also found that the indoor bar service was extremely slow. It often took 20-30 minutes for a server to take our order and often had to wait another 20 minutes for the drink to arrive. The servers were very polite but run off their feet as there were never enough servers on the floor. The food at the beach bar was excellent and we thorough enjoyed the shrimp quesadillas. We were always able to find a palapa with comfortable clean chairs and the servers on the beach were super nice but again drink service was very slow as there seemed to be one server to every 18-20 palapas. Again, we had to wait up to 40 minutes for a drink to arrive. The beach was a lovely clean beach. For entertainment one evening, they hosted a Mexican Fiesta by the pool, which was so much fun. My only other disappointment was that our maid would not be able to get to our room to clean until later in the day, usually between 3:30- 4:30pm. Most days, after being on a tour and returning so our room hot, tired and sweaty and hoping to have a shower before a pre-dinner cocktail, we would have to wait another hour for our room to be finished getting cleaned. We didn’t use the spa and we didn’t use the pools as we are beach people but pools looked clean as we walked by. Staff seemed quite pleasant.

Grand Sens Cancun: 4 Star Resort Trying to Give a 5 Star Stay but Only Delivering a 3/3.5 Star Experience
To sum it up, NOISE NOISE NOISE.
This hotel is LOUD. The hotel has a U-shape where the middle of the U is the main pool. Most of the rooms face this courtyard/pool. The dance music starts here at noon and is way too loud and goes all afternoon. Forget going for an afternoon siesta or sleeping in from a late night. It's too much. Coupled with the design of the interior of the hotel - beautiful finishings but it amplifies and transmits all the non-music noise. Partiers coming home late drunk s[... read more]houting in the hallways? Yes. (avoid rooms close to the elevators). Cleaners talking about their day outside your room at 8am? Yes. Doors slamming? Yes. Furniture being moved for cleaning causing a scrapping sound? Yes. (Pro tip - invest in some furniture socks). An loud click when your neighbor's door closes. Yes. Bring earplugs. I use sleeping pills and I was still awoken many times. It really impacts your stay negatively when everyone is grumpy because they slept so poorly. (Tip - ask for a lagoon view room, on a higher floor away from the elevators). We tried to move rooms twice and only accommodated once due to the noise.
My spouse mentioned how she looked forward to returning to the peace and quiet of home. Without realizing what she said, I reminded her how we live downtown in a loud apartment on a major road of a major city. We came here for quiet and didn't get it. It's like the hotel can't decide what demographic it's going after. It was split almost 1/3 partier age, 1/3 middle age, 1/3 seniors.
If you look past the noise this hotel has a lot good going for it. As mentioned, the hotel is beautiful. The beach is great. The shows were THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN. I'm not big on resort entertainment, but WOW, these guys did a great job. They hired professional dancers that are so athletic you will be embarrassed to not tip. The Burlesque show was hands down amazing, with some magic and comedy. They also include an evening drinking on the pirate ship (basically a rave on the water).
The food experience was variable. The seafood restaurant was incredible. They also offered the same 4 course meal at lunch which was fantastic. You can goto as many ala carts as you like which is great. Minor issue - they have gotten rid of the reservation system, so it's first come first serve. That leads to a lot of waiting, then waiting for your food. Maybe bring back that reservation system. Group seatings are difficult and in the White Box, impossible. They refused to seat 6 of us together. I couldn't believe it. The Japanese restaurant has amazing food, but half of it is in the beautiful glass bar, so they crank up the music and you have to speak over the music to have a conversation. Make sure you get seated inside the restaurant proper if you are not into that sort of thing. The sister resort is right next door which you can attend during the day. However, they have exactly the same restaurants so forget about experiencing variety that way.
The air-conditioner worked great in both rooms. Beds were comfy and rooms nicely appointed. The staff by and large were great.
Lack of quiet pool was a problem. They have this really secluded second floor pool that is tiny and gorgeous, but here too they ruin it with noise. Even on the beach you have to go some distance from the hotel to get some quiet. I actually found it quieter next door at the family resort with all the kids screaming and running around.

NYX Hotel Cancun: Our 4th visit to NYX Cancun - Best yet!
My wife and I just returned from a fantastic 1 week all inclusive stay at the NYX This was our fourth annual spring break visit and I'm happy to report it was our best ever!
We appreciate the classy yet casual vibe of this small resort, the delicious food, and friendly attentive service. It is perfect for the kind of beach vacation we prefer - total relaxation!
On arrival at 8pm Sunday we were assigned a master suite on the 1st floor of building 5 - right over the pool bar. The same room w[... read more]as initially given to us last year and we knew from experience it would be too noisy for us on DJ nights. We immediately requested a change and while the front desk couldn't accommodate us that night, we were able to move to the 4th floor ( as requested in our reservation) in the same building the next morning. This was a much better room for us but still a bit loud in the evening as the DJ plays until 10. If you are early to bed early to rise like us you might want to request an upper floor in building 7 or 8 if you have ocean front. These are quietest.
Aside from that small inconvenience our vacation was perfect! We rented a cabana about half of our beach days, and had fantastic service. They are well worth the CAD $20 per day. New this year was the cabanas have moved north from in front of the Deck restaurant to just past the life guard tower.
We enjoyed wonderful breakfasts on the lagoon balcony, lunches at the Deck beachfront restaurant, and dinners in the Italian or at the Deck. All were delicious with a variety of themed a la carte choices. My personal favorite was the grilled salmon at lunch.
For us, the international clientele make for a vibrant experience. Guests were about half from US and Canada and half from around the globe. While it is more of an adult resort, there were young families, some small groups of spring breakers, and couples of all ages. A great mix.
I want to take a moment to recognize some of the fantastic employees at the NYX - they are why we return. It is really great to see many who have been with the resort for a long time. This tells me management is treating employees well, and it is a good place to work!

Barcelo Maya Caribe: One of the best we ever been so far
First of all I want to make this clear that we been travelling for a number of years with our boys who are 17 and 15 now and this resort we can say that is definitely one of the best so far. This resort was "Perfect for our family".
A couple of downfall that I thing they should maybe reconsider and after speaking to several people on the resort we mostly all felt the same. Here is what I think they could easily modify or change and this would make this resort even more awesome.
-We [... read more]are in 2020 and we all know that internet is a big part of our lives, I don't understand why we still need to pay for internet. I know that there was free WIFI from 10 to 5 at the mall
however what an inconvenience when you are sitting at the beach and you know you have to get dress to go up do just do your daily check up.
-The need to have a parent to sign off to have access to basketball, ping pong, tennis racket etc. I understands that they need some kind of control however maybe the age of this
could be reviewed. Every time they wanted to play a sport we had to walk over with them to sign off.
- No enough bar close to the beach. We had brought a little cooler and we would fill it up with ice and put the beer we had in our rooms in it so for us that worked but I know some people
they don't drink beer so I know that was another downfall of this resort.
Those are just a couples of things that we feel if it would change this would honestly would push this resort another notched.
The beach is one of the most beautiful I've seen so far in Mexico. One of our best experience was swimming with turtle at the Palace Beach. WOW what a great experience that was and I honestly can say this was one of the biggest highlight of our trip.
We would definitely recommend this resort and I've already did recommended this to a few of our friends and they are actually looking to book this resort for next year. Would we go back just my husband and I no because it's very kids oriented and we prefer smaller resort. However I would definitely go again if my kids

The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences Playa Del Carmen: Great resort
We enjoyed our stay very much: the rooms were VERY spacey (we had 2 bedroom suite and with 3 kids we had lots of space), a bit dated but still OK. The food was great in all the restaurants, the staff was great too.
The beach was OK, nothing special but serviceable. One thing that we missed was a playground for our youngest son, he didn't like the kids club much (which was certainly OK).
