Grand Muthu Runaway Bay Club Caribbean: Very low value for money. High disappointment.
Was not expecting much and was disappointed by how poor the experience was overall. There was not 1 single aspect of this resort that stood out or was anything higher than just acceptable. Very poor quality product offered and wish I would have spent my money elsewhere.

Catalonia Montego Bay: Great stay
Resort is clean, good food, and great staff. It’s older and a bit tired, however the location and staff make it a go too. This is our second stay and we plan to go back. The Ali cartes were very good and would recommend the Italian as our favourite.

Grand Decameron Cornwall Beach: A Long Two Weeks :-(
The best thing about this resort was the beach and the pool. But, there was a serious lack of beach/pool area chairs. A few arguments broke out amongst guests. Additionally, some people had chairs reserved with their towels both at the pool area and the beach area. Good luck finding something after 7am. There was no swim up bar at the pool but rather a bar adjacent to the pool. Nowhere in the entire resort were there servers asking if you would like something to drink so everyone wanting so[... read more]mething had to self serve at the bars. The beer was from DR, Presedente, served mostly in cheap plastic cups, occasionally in a mug, and on a few occasions in a paper cup. There was some Red Stripe on tap on a few rare occasions. For the most part Presedente was our only choice and we found it not to be tasteful. Wine from the bar in the lobby came in a plastic cup on a few occasions. Unacceptable in my opinion.
Our room (1323) on the third floor was, in our view, in a poor state of repair: the bathroom light/fan combination was very loud when turned on. We reported it to the front desk but nothing was done about it. The room ceiling fan was effective, but a bit noisy. The AC did work well but we used it little as it was noisy. There were no patio screen doors so leaving the sliding door open wasn't viable. The room entry door was in poor repair as only one of the two keys we were given worked and the door knob lock was flimsy and loose. There was no security device on the door and there were several holes where perhaps a chain once was. The locking door knob needed larger screws in order to be tightened. The clock in the room didn't work at all. The rainfall shower had minimal pressure, but there was hot water. Baseboards were covered with dirt. The beds (2) were clean and comfortable. There were no drawers just a couple of shelves in the closet area. The room safe worked well. All in all the room wasn't the greatest. I don't think the floors were washed any time the two weeks we were there. That said, the housekeeping staff straightened up the room daily, left water and beer and made sure we had clean bathroom towels every three days or so. The sheets were changed three times. Throughout our stay we left tips on the bed when we wanted fresh towels and the sheets changed.
There is one buffet and one a la carte restaurant at the Cornwall Beach side. We ate at the a la carte a couple of times and the salmon was very good. The beef tenderloin was tough and I ate little of it. The buffet was a buffet and as such the food was repetitious, sometimes okay. Morning breakfast was mixed fare and warming trays were no warmer than that. I usually had an omelette (made to order) with some fresh fruit and some bread product of sorts. On a couple of occasions, I was able to snag three slices of bacon from a warming tray. What there was of it was quickly gone. The meals at lunch and dinner in the buffet restaurant okay as there was a good selection. Jerk chicken, jerk pork and roast beef were quite common daily along with some kind of fish and vegetables, pasta and rice. We were there for two weeks as I mentioned so we did our best to mix things up to create a bit of a variety.
There was some great musical entertainment and dancers in the lobby/bar area near the buffet on a nightly basis which usually started around 7pm or so. There was also some form of entertainment on the Montego Bay side which we enjoyed a couple of evenings. Lots of fun to be had at both.
This was my second trip to Jamaica and this resort didn't even come close to where I stayed the first time so I was disappointed given the two week cost of $6,700 for the two of us. Rated at four stars, it didn't live up to it as I have stayed at several four star resorts over the years and found the amenities far better elsewhere. Maintenance for even the most fundamental things was lacking. The fact that there were no servers walking around bar areas, being served poor quality beer in either a plastic or paper cup diminishes the credibility of "four stars." We tipped quite generously in USD even at the bars we queued up to, restaurant servers and housekeeping.
Bottom line: we made the best of it as we were simply happy to be together in the sun and away from Ottawa. Would we go back? No! Would we recommend this resort to others? No!

Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica: Beautiful resort
This resort is very nice. There is a few things that need repair, but mostly it is beautiful. The staff is great and always willing to lend a hand. It is a big resort and there is a lot of walking. Thank goodness there are elevators so that you don't always have to climb the stairs.

Ocean Coral Spring: some good - some bad
The hotel was nice and clean. The food was phenomenal. The beach in front of the Ocean Coral wasnt nice at all, the other side the Ocean Coral had a better beach, which we finally found out we could walk over and use the water, but couldnt sit on the beach. I have never been to a resort where there is a premium side and non premium side where the entertainment was exclusively on the premium side and that the whole resort couldnt partake in. I was very disappointed to see that I couldnt eat a[... read more]t the steakhouse either, that was for premium or ocean eden only. We found alot of the bartenders not very friendly. One bartender was extremely friendly though, Rincan, kudos to him. The resort is five stories high and the elevators were very subpar. They could only take about 2 people at a time. Room was great, housekeeping and filling of things like towels and water, was hit and miss. Big thing to point out too, the lazy river was nice, but they didnt have enough tubs and people either had to wait long, or get out early.

JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar: Luxury with a smile
The iberostar resort in Jamaica has something for every type of traveller. With 3 different sections, there is an abundance of activities to keep you busy, or ample pool space and loungers if you just want to relax with a drink. My mother and I stayed at the grand and it was, well… grand for the most part. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. The rooms have been updated and the private balconies are huge, complete with couch and swinging chair. The nightly entertainment was fantastic and t[... read more]he food was some of the best I have experienced while at resort. The bar is supposed to be fully stocked daily, and we went 3 days without having it restocked. We finally ran into the bar stocking employee and gave him a decent tip and told him to restock. We were restocked that one day only. That was not a deal breaker- as there are many places throughout the resort to get a drink if you want one. Room service was very hit or miss. One night we waited for over 2 hours for dinner. Another night, room service came within 30 minutes. I guess it really depended on who was working each day. My biggest disappointment was the star prestige presentation. We were promised a sunset catamaran cruise in exchange for attending a presentation on their ‘ star prestige’ package. The session was only supposed to last 90 minutes, it ended up being over 2 hours. We were clear w the sales rep we weren’t interested, the manager came over and insisted on trying to ‘sweeten the pot’ with additional savings. Again, we declined and the entire mood of the sales rep and manager changed. They were very abrupt and showed us the door. We inquired about the catamaran cruise and they acted as if they didn’t know anything, and then passed us off to the concierge, who then said we should speak with star prestige. I found the entire presentation and pressure sales campaign to be very distasteful, especially when spending over $800 per night for a room in the resort. When we saw the sales rep the next day she acted as if she didn’t know us and we never did receive the gift we were promised.
Overall- if the beach quality and amenities are at the top of your list, then I would consider the iberostar. The resort itself is extremely well maintained and the section for the grand was absolutely beautiful. I did notice a huge difference in service levels between the 3 resorts in the compound, with service at the grand being the best. I went to the pool bar one day at the iberostar suites and the pool bartender I asked to break a $10 for me went to keep $5 out of it when he gave me the money ( I was intending on giving him a tip) but when I saw that he was trying to take advantage of the situation I was quite frustrated and it left a sour taste in my mouth. If money isn’t an issue, stay at the grand but don’t expect the same level of service or amenities at the other 2 sections of the resort.

Sandals Ochi Beach Resort: Disappointing
This resort did not live up to the image I had of a Sandals resort. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. But the food was lackluster. The dishes rarely lived up to the menu descriptions. And there was such inconsistency. One day a dish would be somewhat palatable and the next poorly prepared. At times service was non-existent. At one pool, no staff circulated to take drink orders and when I asked a pool person, he responded that I should walk over and down the stairs to another pool t[... read more]o get a drink a 5-10 minute walk. The next day I asked him again if someone would be coming; he responded that I told you yesterday you have to get it yourself. Some of the staff were friendly and helpful but some were downright surly.
Upon arrival, we were shown a room that bore no resemblance to the room that was booked. We were then shown another room which was small and dark, and then told that they would find a better one for us the next day. And they did move us over but was that necessary?
If you think that i am overly critical, we met a couple at the airport who go to Sandals every year. They were at the one at Dunn River and they had the same experience. Even having a meal that was inedible. They were totally disillusioned by their week.
It seems that Sandals has gone downhill since the original owner died. I will certainly not go back to a Sandals..
Finally, I believe that this particular property is not suitable for seniors due to the endless amount of stairs, with no elevators. One must go down at least 3 flights of stairs to access the beach, the main pool and almost all dining facilities.
After booking this hotel I must admit over the weeks following some reviews had me very worried. However we did not experience any serious issues and minor inconveniences were rectified immediately. Our room was clean, fridge stocked and accessible to all amenities.
Our only complaints were that you had to be very “pro active “ to get a lounger either at the pool or the beach and we felt the food services could be improved upon.

Had a 7 day stay at the Bahia Principe Luxury in Jamaica. Only an “okay” experience. Rooms outdated, food “okay” unable to book an A La Carte for over half of the stay because we travelled as a party of 8. Beach was a disappointment.

Grand Decameron Cornwall Beach: Good location
Was not a good experience. People smoked everywhere and I just could not get away from the cigarettes and marijuana scent...had to talk to management as one weekend our room had the smell of marijuana coming through the vent -front desk came up, admitted the to the odor, sprayed with lysol but then I had to be out of the room again. Few times my husband and I sat on the balcony but I had to return inside to get away from the cigarette smell coming from the adjoining balcony. Due to this situat[... read more]ion I had headaches for the most part of my two weeks. On the other hand it is a beautiful place, but if you have allergies like I do, you're not going to enjoy yourself. I couldn't stay around the pool long, neither the beach, neither my balcony -and for that Saturday night I had a mask on in the bedroom occupied by myself and husband who does not smoke. The food could be better, was often times short of spoons, but the worst is the health implications.

JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar: Mixed Feelings
In short, everything outside of our room was great ie. pool, beach, food, the facilities and the staff. Where they fell short was the inconsistent service of the room. Every day we had issues whether it was water, coffee, towels, replacement of dirty glasses etc. On one occasion our room was not even cleaned.

Riu Ocho Rios: do not go here !
Just arrived home 2/28/2024 after a week at Riu Ocho Rios. This was my first time in Jamaica & will be my last.
#1 My sons wife was physically assaulted by another guest (A Jamaican living in Canada but there on vacation) this man harassed all of the women in our group of 12, minding our own business having a drink outside the sports bar in the lounge area. He was told nicely to leave once, came back 10 mins later with more of an attitude. My 29 year old daughter in-law was going to attempt to [... read more]ask him to leave again when he threw her into the other women in our group. My son then retaliated to protect his wife, when this mans son came out of nowhere and tackled my son breaking his wrist & punching him in the mouth. Security came and various other staff, who were all laughing at us. They did nothing to this man & actually blamed my daughter inlaw saying she started it. What a joke!
The other option was, our entire group of 30 people can leave and we can seek out legal action with the police. Anyone that knows Jamaica leaving a resort at 2am in the morning we would have probably been robbed or killed.
#2 The hotel clinic the woman was super rude & refused to even give us a tensor bandage or anything even to purchase one. Totally unacceptable & disgusting.
#3 The pool staff (life guards) are pigs , non stop hitting on the young girls in our group (daughters). making advancements, pouring water on their breasts, touching ect..
After reading more reviews on this resort of multiple similar reports... is this acceptable to the Riu resort chain?
Our group spent approx. $90,000 dollars on our stay at this resort. I would highly recommend that nobody goes here. It is nothing special & sketchy as hell. If you cant feel safe at an expensive resort with a joke of a security staff, where can you feel safe ?
Disgusting resort Rui !
