We ended up in Ambar I and the location was perfect. We were close to the lobby/restaurant/pool and beach. We really didn’t need to use the trams except for a few of the ala carte restaurants and night time activities which was great. The staff were really super friendly, the beach was gorgeous and the food was good.

Fantastic Resort and Stay
This resort was amazing, everything about our stay was excellent. What we liked about this Resort is: the food is excellent and never the same, they have a lot of variety and it's very tasty. the people are great, friendly and always wanting to help out. The resort itself is absolutelly amazing, we love all the landscaping, the flowers, the plants & trees; I have never been to a resort that is so clean, our room was clean and beds were made twice a day. This was our fisrt time in a Five 5 * hote[... read more]l and we most certainly plan on going back to either the Luxury Ambar and or Luxury Esmeralda on that same site, we do have to say that a one week stay is not enough to take advantage of everything this resort has to offer.

GBP Ambar - Excellent on so many levels
Visited this Adult Only resort from August 12 to the 19 with a friend from university, we are both single guys. This hotel is the Adult Only section of the bigger Grand Bahia Principe complex. The size maybe a turn off for some, that seek a more intimate experience, but for us, the size was a plus, as there are many lobbies, activities, pools to see and spend time at. Truth be told, we spend the week at the Adult pool and beach side, as there were no kids. The Ambar section did have lots of coup[... read more]les (understandable), so if a party/single scene is what you are after, you will be disappointed here. We just wanted to get away and find time to relax, although the club was rocking with singles after 11:00 at the central "town square".
We did book 10 days in advanced our request for the a-la carte restaurants, and got every request. So for the 7 nights we were there we dined at restaurants, no buffet for us. Did the Don Pablo twice, excellent food and presentation, heard people complaining (from the other hotels) they could not get a single a la carte (most of the Ambar guests got their reservations) . Do yourself a favor and plan ahead and you would not be disappointed. On the topic of food, breakfast was amazing, my buddy ate smoke salmon and caviar for breakfast, just so he could say he had that. Food was always fresh and there was a day that they had a person making donuts right in front of you, how cool was that. Every morning they had a mimosa station set up (orange juice and champagne) and our server kept bringing us glasses of mimosa once he saw our glasses were empty. Top class service. I don't drink coffee and had to tell the servers "no coffee for me please" many times, I did appreciate the fact that they thought I drank coffee.
Lunch during our stay was at the Ambar 1 pool "snack bar". Which snack bar makes fresh palella and pasta in front of you, and had fresh assortment of meats and dishes. My favorite was fries with chilli and cheese dripped all over it and some BBQ chicken on the side.
Dinner was at the various a la cartes. All were awesome, my favorite was the Rodizio, the meats were just perfect and it just kept coming, most meals disappear over time, this restaurant was the opposite. There was absolutely no issues with food, and both of us were fine, so stomach issues. Just be smart and try not to get crazy with the assortment of food.
The beach was as expected, lots of seaweed, but the workers kept it as clean as possible and once you get past the first 10 feet, the ocean was clear. There was lots of "Reserved for Adult Ambar Patrons" signs all over our section of the beach, so getting a spot was not a problem. They even had a young man clean the sand off your lounger and feet after being on the beach. I had to tip him (10.00 USD), since no one was.
Spent lots of time at the Ambar 1 pool, where shaded places were not a problem to obtain. They were very consistent with brining drinks to you, the girls came around every 10 minutes or so. Many times they came around with fruit skewers (pineapple - cantelope - watermelon) and specialty cocktails for you to try. The Ambar 2 pool had a sushi bar, which I was told was very good (did not try it myself). It is true the Ambar 2 pool was quieter (until the pool bar patrons got their fill, and the noise level went up), but it was great interacting with many different people.
In closing, my friend only visit to the Caribbean before this trip was to Cuba and after the first hour being at the Grand Bahia Principe, he was blown away with the overall presentation of the grounds, lobbies, pool, etc. Myself, I was in the Dominican last August, staying at the Grand Palladium Palace (which was awesome in its own way), but the GBP Ambar blows it away. I used the room safe and many times I had my iphone charging in the room during the day, with no safety issues what so ever. I did tip the maid 5.00 USD everyday and my room was perfect. The turn down service was amazing, with the blinds drawn in, PJ's laid out on my bed and chocolates left (3.00 USD tip was left for the turndown maid) .
THIS PLACE IS AMAZING and set the bar at what a 5 star hotel is. I did not name any staff in particular in this review, but as a collective they were all awesome. Hopefully we will be there next August for round 2.

Luxurious Resort
The rooms were nice and big, great food at all the restaurants, nice pools, good selection of alcohol at the lobby bar, awesome entertainment at night, friendly staff. Beach was full of seaweeds and was not good swimming. Mini fridge in the room was not replenished daily. Cashier at the front reception did not have change of smaller bills. Overall, a very nice resort.

Paradise!
Beautiful hotel and grounds, extremely clean.Service poolside and at restaurants excellent. The only thing that made me not rate this a 5 star was because of all the seaweed on the beach. It ruined the experience of spending time on that spectacular beach. I have been to the DR in November and the seaweed was not an issue. Not sure if it was just a summer thing ...

Very disappointing!
Pros: weather, adult only portion, no issues getting a sun lounger by the pool
Cons: food was bad and we are still sick, bed hard as a rock, room cleaning hardly done, can't flush toilet paper, mini bar in room barely stocked, issues with the patio door not locking, poor service overall, restaurants requiring reservations were terrible, service unhelpful, an hour late on the flight going down and coming home, airport in dominican very unorganized, tranfer to and from the hotel a joke - late bot[... read more]h ways, everyone expecting a tip, another group had bedbugs and clinic said it was mosquito bites - mosquitos don't bite in a line, tons of seaweed on the beach - on the sand and in the water.

Excellent Vacation!
It was our first time in Punta Cana. We had a fantastic experience at the Bahia Principe Ambar resort. Everything was exceptional, our room was beautiful, the food was great and the staff was very friendly. The only thing that could be improved is the organization of the trolly cart that you take to the Ambar from the main lobby. After traveling all morning it was a tad inconvenient that they didn't send a trolly as promptly as we had been informed & they needed to send a second trolly because t[... read more]here wasn't enough room on the first. Nice Resort
I've never done a review before but decided I would this time around. It's a bit long but, in my opinion, fair. You can be the judge.
I stayed at the Ambar side (Older side and Adults only). Overall, it was a nice resort and the grounds were well kept.
Arrival was a bit rocky as the bus dropped a bunch of us off in front of the Esmeralda and told us we would get a cart to take us to the Ambar. After waiting 25 minutes, I had to go to the front desk to inquire what was going on and only then di[... read more]d someone come shortly thereafter. I tried to inform the front desk at the Ambar of the issue and it was dismissed like no one understood what we were saying and no apology was made.
Entertainment: Since this is an adult's only side, they should have had more activities and music playing. The music in the foyer kept skipping (need new music and/or CDs) and entertainment was quite limited.
Pool: Very nice. This was the only place with music throughout the day, except when an entertainer performed in the lobby.
Beach: It had a lot of potential but the seaweed was quite bad at that time of year (June). If you weren't out there early, you didn't get a hut and/or chair. Same for the pool. When on vacation, in my opinion, I don't believe I should have to set an alarm to get up just to complete this task. Obviously, this is out of the resort's hands.
Food: In the buffet, good but not great and a bit on the cold side. Desserts had potential but, due to mass production, well you know, it didn't taste that great except for the ice-cream, jello, tapioca and fruits :). I also loved the seafood pasta station at the restaurant close to the pool. That's pretty much what I ate for lunch for the remaining three days of my stay.
A la Carte: Great experience and top notch service!! I would go back there again and only go to the specialty restaurants each night for sure. I ate at Don Pablo, El Olivio and Bella Italia.
Junior Suite issues: Liquor - I stayed in a Junior Suite wherein liquor was supposed to be provided daily, it also said so on the flyer in the room, but I had to call continuously to request same and also for soda. The phone didn't work properly (had a lot of static which I called about but nothing came of it) and had some issues with the tv.
Liquor was a bit on the weak side. Most mixed drinks tasted like medicine, except the little bottles put in your room, Kahlua, Baileys and their local rum, Mama Juana, which didn't have aphrodisiac qualities claimed but did give you a good night's sleep so that's why people dissappear.... :)
The rooms were very clean. A huge cockroach did show up to say hi, which wasn't good, but I guess you can't avoid these things in the tropics....lol (when I should be crying).
There were no mats in the room at all because the floor got quite dusty throughout the day.
Beds: Harrrrd. Even with a mattress topper, it was still uncomfortable.
Customer Service/Staff: I must say that Albania M. (front desk) was a wonderful person to deal with. She did her best to accommodate and assist in whatever way possible and her English was quite good. This is how customer service should be.
As for the staff, that's where the problem set in. At this resort, I understand that Spanish is their native language but, given that soooo many people come from overseas, I felt ignored or dismissed as they couldn't understand my requests because I didn't speak Spanish, especially the buffet and when calling the front desk. For example, I asked for gingerale and got gin and tonic (which would have been ok if I drank that). I get the impression from this resort that, if I didn't have a tip all the time, the service and follow-through lacked. Most times, I was the one who would have to call back, after quite a bit of time had passed, and usually by then they would have forgotten, so make sure you follow-up continuously.
Value: I've been at numerous hotels in different places, but I would not pay what I did to go back there. If there was a deal - perhaps.

Great Times!
Beautiful hotel! Loved the adults only. Great service, clean facility and good food. Would have liked more activity and music around the Ambar 1 pool during the day. It was a little dead. The entertainment is geared towards an older crowd than my husband and I in our thirties. Overall wonderful vacation and would definitely return.

Great Resort
Would highly recommend the Adults-only Ambar for couples. It's a resort within a resort at the expansive Bahia property. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and have large bathrooms (although a little dark). The Ambar is located closest to the beautiful golden sand beach. The beach is clean and we never had any issues getting a beach chair, though I'd recommend getting down there before 7:30 a.m if you want a spot up front.
If the pool is your thing, the Ambar has a nice sized pool with l[... read more]ots of chairs available. Usually have music playing and a swim up bar. It can get a little loud at times so if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing alternative, I'd recommend going over to the Ambar II. It's a very large, winding, beautiful pool, with a swim up bar and a sushi bar.
The grounds of the Bahia are absolutely gorgeous and well mained by the hard working grounds staff. The Ambar's walkways are really pretty. If you're looking for nice spots for pictures, this is the place and I'd also get over to the Esmerelda section for more of the same.
Food: If you are looking for gourmet food, you might be disappointed, but for a carribean resort, it's pretty good. There are countless restaurants on the Bahia property, including 7 or 8 at the Ambar alone. Although you have access to all the Buffets on the property, the Ambar is the best...its the largest, has the best selection (something for everyone) and the food is good and plentiful for breakfast lunch and dinner. A la Carte restaurants are really good. We went to Portofino (Italian), Maiko (Japanese), Rodizio (Brazilian), Don Pablo (Gourmet), the outdoor BBQ (Grill) and El Olivio (Meditaranian). All were excellent, especially the Japanese show cooking dinner. Book your a la carte restaurants as soon as you get there! Or, better yet, you can e-mail or call ahead of your trip and make requests. If you hesitate, you may be disappointed as they get booked up quickly and are some are closed on certain nights.
We found the staff extremely friendly and polite and provided great service. These people work extremely hard, and are always smiling but do not make a lot of money. So even though your package might say "Tips included," be sure to tip these people, even a couple of bucks here and there. It not only is appreciated by them, it makes a big difference in their lives and they will give you even better service than normal.
Overall, this is a very nice resort and I would highly recommend it. Esmerelda is also great part of this resort if you are travelling with kids or don't mind the added commotion that kids will naturally create.

Amazing resort and for sure one I would recommend
The grounds, hotel, rooms and dining areas were all top rated and I would for sure go back to the Ambar. The food at all the buffets are top quality but some of the a la carte restaurants are surprising questionable and would not go back. We did however cannot get into the the Don Pablo restuarant and did not understand how we cannot get any reservations for the duration of our stay.

Fantastic resort in Punta Cana
I just returned from a week at Ambar and can't say enough great things. The resort was spotless - they actually scrub down the pool area every night. The room was always clean and restocked every day. Thanks to Liane ( I maybe misspelt that) so taking such great care of me and my room! I was in Ambar 2, second floor, and had a fabulous view of the pool! For those that say the beach is far away I have one comment - are you kidding me? It wasn't even 5 minutes to walk it! And the shuttles run freq[... read more]uently if you want them.
The restaurants ( a la carte) were fantastic. Don Pablo should have a Michelin star! It was that good. Takara and el Olivio were amazing as well. Portafino - the chicken medallions were really good. Even the buffet was great.
A special hello to William and Carlos at the Ambar 2 bar... They are so friendly and nice. I miss them already!
Everyone at the resort were incredibly friendly and helpful. I will go back!
Also for the lady who checked me into room 81208... Gracias gracias gracias! Loved it! I am sorry but I can't remember her name but she was so professional and friendly.
Other tips
Sushi at Ambar pool is excellent!
Garden grill - if you love steak... Order something else. That was disappointing. Sorry. - my only complaint
Beach is beautiful!
