Iberostar Coral Esmeralda: 5 stars for sure
You always hear how you just go to Cuba for the beaches and Mexico for the food but honestly this resort is well worth it and is the exception. The beach was the most incredible of any Cuban resort we’ve been to, miles of white sand. And the food was better than any other 5 star Cuban resort we’ve been to pre pandemic which is really saying a lot right now because there’s a massive shortages in Cuba and all over the world. Loved the beach front bbq with good meats, rice with lots of spices[... read more] and the desserts and pastries were to die for and I usually don’t like them at other places. Oh and the fire roasted oven pizzas and the fact that the snack bar was open 24/7 but is actually good. Also they spared no expense on decor- I noticed because I’m into design and the mid century vibes were extremely modern and luxury/expensive. You can tell they really paid attention to all aspects of the resort and what people want. The Cuban staff are so so so sweet, as always. Wonderful amazing people.

Brisas Guardalavaca: Just a thought
We have been in this hotel 4 time's. Amazing shore and landscape, beautiful ocean. But !!!! You can feel that this hotel start to degrading. It needs renovation, not just painting. Variety of food minimum. But you won't be hungry. Fly's everywhere including on the food . People who work there are very friendly, but Cuban's who are guest's (seems like 80 % of population of the hotel) are not. only one bar will give you real drink's, others will mix Havana club for example with the water. Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: great place and excellent service
I went there with my brother and we had the time of our life!!
The room was nice and clean. When it comes to the food there were lots of varieties and different choices at the buffet, the service there was outstanding. Our waitresses Yulie and Nairelys were awesome.
The entertainment staff were also awesome. Yuni and Marlon Brando with the daily morning stretching the Zumba and the beach volleyball kept us busy pretty much the whole day!
We are definitely coming back!

Playa Pesquero: This is average 3* Cuban Resort.
This Resort Lobby Area is big which is very nice and attractive. We stayed in this Resort in May 2022. We didn't like it overalll. Beach is very nice. Pool is not clean. Rooms are old. They might have food supply shortage due to their economy. The food is very bad in this resort. The al-carte dinning Restaurant is also terrible food. Snack bar has nothing. Please do your own home work before book this Resort. I am very disappointed with our stay.

Hotel Bella Costa: For me, Iberostar Bella Costa was a 2 week haven of relaxation – friendly staff – great atmosphere and a beautiful beach!
I chose to stay in the main hotel – however would likely pick a bungalow next visit as they are closer to the beach. My 6th floor room was clean, well maintained and had a very comfortable king size bed. The housekeeping staff are very friendly and helpful. I chose not to have my room made up every day however Janice checked every day to see if I needed more water, toilet paper or fresh towels. Bella Costa provides water in your room in reusable glass bottles to save the ocean from all the[... read more] plastic water bottles that never get disposed of properly….I really appreciated that touch.
The entertainment staff was wonderful and, if you choose, will keep you busy from morning until bedtime! Each morning starts with gentle stretching and then aerobic exercise either in the pool or on the beach. Throughout the day there are games and contests for the adults – with your chance to win a bottle of Cuban rum – and also activities for the kids. Every evening there is a show and then the disco after. I enjoyed the shows – ranging from water ballet to dance productions! One evening featured a couples game - guessing how their partner would answer questions – that was fun! The disco opens at 11 pm in the main hotel just off the lobby. Although it’s not really my ‘thing’ – I checked it out and people seemed to be having fun dancing and drinking.
The lobby is stunning with a huge stone bar – grand piano – several different seating groupings and a separate coffee lounge. Entertainment was offered there every evening.
Cuba still faces many food shortages – however I was completely satisfied with all my meals. I tend not to be a breakfast eater….and like to sleep in in the morning – so my first meal of the day was usually at the poolside restaurant for pizza after a while in the sun! Loved the pizza! Lunch is also available at the buffet restaurant overlooking the beautiful beach – and the daily selections were varied and tasty. I went to all 3 offered a la cart restaurants and had excellent meals – the seafood dinner in the Cuban restaurant was recommended by my server and was amazing – and at the Italian Restaurant I had the best mushroom soup I think I have EVER had! The dinner buffet has plenty of variety – although not as much as I have seen in Cuba in the past – and I enjoyed my dinners there quite a bit. A word of caution – I often hear people complain about the food in Cuba – I think you have to remember the situation the country is in – they frequently face food shortages and import many of their food products which can be problematic at different times. Cuba is not a tourist destination for the gourmand – however – if, like me, you enjoy good basic cuisine with a local flair you will be happy.
I was nervous travelling in our pandemic riddled world as I am ‘older’ and have co-morbidities. The flight and bus getting to the resort was a little scary for me – however once I reached the resort I felt totally safe and secure. All employees wear masks at all times – I observed staff constantly cleaning high traffic areas and ‘touch zones’. Buffets had servers - guests were not permitted to serve themselves, and masks were required in the restaurant.
The biggest ‘flaw’ I found was that the pool is showing significant wear and tear and is in need of upgrading/TLC. I observed chemicals being added to the pool daily and the water was clean, however there are many spots where the paint has worn away from the sides and bottom of the pool - and there is a general ‘run down’ feel. Having said that – the magnificent ocean and pristine beach is only steps away. I have mobility issues and especially loved how close the beach is to the hotel – how safely and easily it can be accessed – and the beautiful sandy bottom of the ocean.
I usually vacation in Cayo Coco….however loved Iberostar Bella Costa and will be returning as soon as I am able! Thank you to all the amazing staff that made my vacation memorable and truly made me feel welcome and well taken care of and valued!
Thank you to all my new Bella Costa friends.

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Disappointment.
This is not a 4-star resort.
The bathrooms in the lobby and by the Buffet do not look good. I recommend avoiding it.
The rooms are kept clean, we missed the coffee maker (which we got after the intervention of a Sunwing[... read more]s representative).
The choice of beverages is very limited to what Cubans can now offer. The food was also not the best, but we were not hungry. The snack bar was a "Joke"- terrible!
Jazz Bar was unavailable - the only public place with air condition.
Wifi is advertised everywhere, but is accessible only after 4 pm and not always working as it is supposed.
We didn't use the pool so can't judge.
The beach is a bit narrow and dirty (mainly, thanks to the people who use it), and be careful because there are a lot of broken shells and other crusty things that can hurt.
The seabed slightly away from the shore is soft and silty.
The service is amicable and nice(as always in Cuba). However, they don't speak much English or French.
My opinion is based on the family section of the resort, not the adult section. The adult section seemed to be more interesting.

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Horrible!
I travelled to Las Brujas from Montreal with Sunwing, on May 27th, 2022 for one (1) week with an 11 year old and two (2) other adults.
We purchased the Elite Plus option (extra $200) and in-flight meals. Unfortunately, there was no “Fresh and flaky croissantâ€, it was a cold, hard and squished sandwich, I did not eat it and on the return flight exchanged it for another option.
The 737 is advertised as having an in-flight entertainment, but it was not the case.
In the email communications[... read more] I received prior to my departure, I was informed that Pesos is the official currency in Cuba, however, no one wants Pesos and are requiring payment in US or CAD dollars. We are then stuck with the Pesos.
Another email informed me to meet with the Sunwing rep the day after the arrival at 10 am – that was incorrect as well.
Upon our arrival at the hotel, we received the room keys and towel vouchers. I asked for a map, but did not receive one. There were maps on the way to the beach but did not indicate our current location, so it was difficult to orient ourselves. The room key did not work the first three (3) times so I had to go back to the lobby to get this fixed. To get the towels, we needed to look for the person in charge to get them. To return the towels, it was the same situation and the person in the booth didn’t even have any vouchers to give us. It was just time wasteful and we had to go to the lobby to get this resolved to avoid the $25 US penalty per towel.
Very few people spoke any English – ordering drinks or food was a hit & miss – we would sometimes get what we wanted and sometimes they would not bring what we ordered as they didn’t understand us.
The resort was very, very dirty. The bathrooms were disgusting with dirty floors and toilets, some not flushing, some doors not closing, no light, smell of urine, etc. The lobby, the hallways, the pool area and the beach were also very disappointing. Plastic cups, cigarette butts, broken dishes, paper, spills, roaches/bugs etc. There was no AC in the lobby nor a closed off lounge to cool off although a Jazz Bar was advertised. There was an oversized chess game but with missing pieces to my son’s disappointment. The hotel advertises 24/7 WiFi but it’s not the case. It was available with a password, from 4 pm and only in the lobby if we were able to stay connected. With an 11 year old, on rainy days, and nothing else to do, internet was all we had – so that was falsely advertised as well. Even to do our check-in and check flight status, it was a challenge without the WiFi.
Some staff drank on the job. One was flat out drunk and we could not finalise our A la carte restaurant reservations. When ordering two (2) beers, one mentioned something to the effect of “let me get you 3†and drank one himself. Some were trying to sell us Pesos for a rate 4-5 times more advantageous than at the airport, as they just want dollars.
We took a taxi with to the neighbouring Ensenachos resort to compare (as we thought that this was representative of the situation in Cuba in general) - that resort was spotless, you could eat off the floor in the bathroom!
The rooms were clean but we had no coffee machine as advertised. The bed sheets were smelly, as if they were left wet in the laundry for a while. The shower had no doors so all the water would flood the bathroom. The mini-bar was half empty.
Although I knew the food reputation in Cuba, this was beyond belief! No peanut butter, no Nutella, no ketchup, no mayo, no salt, etc. The food was cold, tasteless and soggy (ex: eggs or vegetables). A la carte restaurants were good though so this saved us. Some drinks were not available: no orange or apple juice, no milk, no beer on the beach on some days, no tequila. The buffet was full of flies! They were on food, on the tables, everywhere!
There was a snack bar with no menu so it was hard to know what was available. We went once: ordered some burgers that came after 20 minutes of waiting and one reminder. Unsure if it was meat or not but besides that on a bun, there was nothing else and the 5-6 fries on the plate. It was uneatable and we left it on the table.
On the last day, I found pieces of stainless steel scrubber in my pasta. I showed it to the manager at the buffet. My mother had a piece of glass in her ice cream from possibly a chipped glass cup.
The beach was dirty with cigarette butts, broken shells (I’ve cut my feet twice), plastic cups in the sand and water. I was picking them up constantly. Since there is no bathroom at the beach bar, people go in the water or the near by bushes (including the staff). You can smell urine when walking by the bushes.
Music was very loud at both the beach and the pool area. I tested the decibels with my watch (it was around 90 which is way too high). Hard to have a conversation with that much noise or to even relax.
Beach showers to rinse off were not working either.
I initially wanted to leave early but since I did not want to pay extra, decided to wait it out. I spoke to the Sunwing rep, Delvis, about the situation and he was very helpful. He got the Manager involved, who was also very, very helpful. We did get extra à la carte reservations (except for Thursday) and we got the coffee machines. We declined the special dinner offered on Wednesday as the situation with the mosquitos was unbearable.
However, these changes did not help the fact that we were stressed and frustrated with the situation and not enjoying the vacation.
If this trip were $600, I would not say anything. But it was $1200 per person. The information on Sunwing website is incorrect and offers false advertising.
“Pristine shoreâ€, “white-sand shoresâ€, “bowlingâ€, “charming accommodationsâ€, “stocked mini-barâ€, “all drinksâ€, “10 restaurantsâ€, “7 barsâ€, “24/7 free WiFi throughout resortâ€, “electric coffee makerâ€, “Jazz Bar/Coffee Shopâ€,
As a traveller/tourist, I am unable to visit the resort before booking. I am counting on the website description to make my decision. Sunwing has the responsibility to provide accurate information to the clientele and not advertise/promise a pristine resort when they cannot deliver the goods. The whole week was a waste of money and time. We came back more tired than when we left.

Paradisus Varadero: Bad experience
I have been in Cuba 7 times prior to this vacation at paradisus varadero last week of May 2022.
By far the worst experience and service.
Watch out for the loggage guys they want Canadian money right from the second they dropped your bags. A thank you is not enough.
1 snack bar is not enough for a big resort, runs out of supplies daily so don't be surprised if you eat a burguer without ketchup and mustard for afew days. (No kidding)
Bring a book or download movies because unless you are under[... read more] 10 you will not enjoy any of the night shows in the entire week .
If you have kids GOOD LUCK! apple juice, orange are no where to be found. We saw cereal in the last 2 days and the cereal was not crunchy.
Food well well well. I been in Cuba 7 times I know food is never good but I never saw a shrimp on the buffet in 7 days not fresh fish only dark tuna steaks which were good surprisingly
Rooms were clean but that smelled of wet never goes away. Keep toilet seat close or you will get that bad Snell all over your clothes.
The gardeners and the cleaning ladies are the ones that will smile and welcome you the most without any interest.
The beach is 9 out of 10
That's why I go to Cuba because of the beach.
Overall I found in this trip that food supply and financial situation has changed what I love the most about the island.
That free loving welcoming spirit.
Now you better have money in your pocket for tips
To Cuba I might return but to paradisus varadero I will not go ever again not even if the trip is free and I get paid to go.

Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: The worst Cuban experience!
We were a group of 9 women who were so eager to travel to one of our favorite spots again since Covid. This excitement was over shadowed quite quickly once we were finally settled into our ant infested rooms. One of the women's rooms looked like there was bed bug eggs all over her nighttables and the other room wreaked of sewer. This was topped with the absolute lack of service everywhere in the resort with the exception of the à la Carte restaurants. If you have a picky eater in your group goo[... read more]d luck. The buffet mainly consisted of muscles, shrimp and questionable mixes of all of that. Saving grace was the omlette station but be prepared to wait 25 mins. One grill and lots of hungry guests from the night before. One honorable mention was Dayron in entertainment, real gem. One server in the restaurants named Edwin. No bar service close enough to the beach to make it anywhere near wanting a drink. The bugs nighttime were absolutely unbearable and several girls needed medical attention. Cuba is normally a favorite place of mine but I think I will wait a couple years to return, if ever to Varadero. Also off resort we went to a lobster dinner at El Carbon, the house flies almost ate our meal for us and the waitress ripped each of the 4 of us off for 12 dollars each. We just paid and got the hell out before we got eaten alive.

All of the amenities in this hotel were lovely; rooms, grounds personnel, food, ocean, shows etc. The food is served to you by masked staff, and when walking through the dining area, you were required to wear your mask. The resort itself was beautiful, not too many activities so keep that in mind. I would say the service was decent, most employees were nice and welcoming. Though as a queer identifying person there were times I was by the beach bar and I would spot the workers snickering and laughing at me so it wasn’t the most comfortable and welcoming.
