Absolutely terrible resort! Nothing luxury about this resort. Extremely dirty rooms. We had to switch rooms because the first room’s mini fridge had been unplugged for so long, super dirty and smelled so bad! Second room we went to had poop/stool marks inside the toilet bowl! The food was absolutely disgusting! The only good food was at Japanese restaurant which was teppanyaki. And if you dont like Japanese food then there wont be any food in this resort for you so dont go! The resort says it [... read more]has multiple restaurants and buffets, but thats a lie because more than half are not in this resort they are in the resorts beside them which is at least 20 min walk same with the Splash Pool Water Slides. Service was horrible! Nadia from Building #1 is the concierge and she lied to us about the resort discontinuing dinner reservations for the Japanese restaurant so we lost 1 night of eating actual real food. We asked her multiple times but she said no need for reservation. She was a terrible person and was very pushy into sales. Some little girl got Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease and the resort made no reports of it even thought our friends saw her and her family going to the clinic. and she was covered in rashes. The resort didnt let parents know and that disease is contagious through air And saliva. And my 1 year daughter caught it most likely from the pool. So last 1.5 days we were indoors because my daughter had fever and was covered in rashes and we didnt want to make any other kids sick.
Overall this resort was absolutely terrible and i would not recommend it at all. Just stay away from this resort dont waste your money!

Bahia Principe Escape Ambar: Definitely 5 star!
This hotel is paradise! The ride from the airport is about 30 minutes.
The grounds were immaculate with palm trees and lots of tropical plants, both outside and inside the hotel. Our corner room was clean, large and comfortable. We had an issue with a leaky toilet and maintenance was sent immediately. There is a safe, stocked fridge, some toiletries, slippers and a robe. The pool was spacious and we saw workers cleaning the lawn chairs at night. The beach has soft sand and we swam in the ocea[... read more]n with no seaweed. The beach is great to go for long walks on,if you want. The shuttle service was frequent and the drivers were courteous.
We took the shuttle all around just to tour the property. Food was very good and there was a great variety of selection. There was a seafood dinner night at the main buffet which included lobster. We made our reservations on the Bahia app and it worked well. We ate at the M.E.A.T restaurant and we were not disappointed. The ceasar salad, steak, clam chowder soup and double chocolate brownie were our choice!
This hotel has given us some wonderful memories and wanting to go back in the future!

Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort: Smelly room
The room had a very bad smell coming through washroom throughout the stay, which seems to be sewage issues. Rooms were not cleaned on time or not at all. Sometimes housekeeping would forget to stock up the fridge.the staff were rarely able to communicate in English. Overall the resort was not that bad, foam party is one thing to definitely watch out for!
While our stay didn't start off too well- TV didn't work, mosquitoes in the room, was unable to unlock safe after locking, only one garbage can, in the washroom, and no ice-bucket- all these issues were resolved with one call, almost immediately. Our room was very spacious, and although on the ground floor, the surrounding are was surprisingly quiet. Nightly entertainment was top notch, buffets at the main compound and at the beach were amazing and well stocked, and restaurants provided delicio[... read more]us variety. The Italian was superb! The beach was out of this world: I'm not a swimmer, so to finally see calm, salt water, was heaven sent. Our concierge, Moberley, was extremely helpful in making sure all our needs were being met. The grounds were well manicured and onsite wild life was refreshing. All in all, a terrific spot to vacation at.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Decent stay for the money
We spent 2 weeks at this resort in December. The first room we were assigned wasn't great as it was in a building that hasn't been renovated. After a couple of rainy nights bathroom ceiling started leaking. We got moved to a renovated room closer to the beach, but also very close to the restaurant with its constantly running fans and noisy delivery carts in the morning and evening. This wasn't a huge issue in the middle of the night, but forget about sleeping in if you get an ocean view room in[... read more] building 6.
The "upgrade" came with a price of attending their sales presentation and contrary to what most people would say about those, it was actually worth attending. (Bare with me for a minute). Those time share/members clubs are generally a scam, but you just have to play it smart. The islander seem to take their time with everything, but if you play it smart you can be done with it within 2 hours. Just keep mentioning that you need to be spending time at the beach right now and even better if you go in with kids. You can always blame lack of time on them ;) obviously don't sign anything, as the offers were outrageous, but be firm yet polite about it. In the end you will get resort credits (in our case we got $70, as we refused to give our credit cards "to enter into a draw" to get more $) on top of whatever credits you already have. We ended up spending them all on gifts at the gift shop without paying a cent.
Now the food: generally it was the same main fare each day (especially for breakfast) with some theme nights providing bit more variety. Most dishes were ok, but lacked seasoning, which is understandable in a place catering to so many guests. HOWEVER each night you could find something good tasting.
There was no room service, but food was available almost 24hrs a day.
We tried only 1 restaurant a la carte thinking it would be like our other trips when they were a waste of time but we were pleasantly surprised with their Mexican restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing, even if service was bit lacking.
Beach grill was open only every other day or so and they would usually run out of food after 10 minutes.
Pool: it was bit disappointing to see only 1 pool that also had a swim up bar, which was actually next to the kid's area of the pool. :/
Beach: great for the first week with small waves and no seaweed. Second week, it was full of seaweed and bigger waves, which made it unsuitable for swimming. However there was enough room under the palapas or the palm trees for everybody just to enjoy being close to water.
Entertainment: having been to grand sirenis in Mexico we were expecting a lot more. Most nights the entertainment was disappointing. However the daytime animation crew was doing a good job with games at the pool and beach area.
Trips: we only took 1 trip when we hired a driver to Puerto Plata as recommended by our server, Nelson (lovely man, if you get him. He took a good care of us during meals). However most of that trip was spent being dragged from a store to a store in order to buy things from his friends or being passed onto local "guides" who not only didn't know much, but were expecting money for their lousy services. The only good part was the cable car ride and visiting the fort in the city, which we did on our own.
Overall I would give the experience 3 out of 5 stars.

Riu Republica: Fabulous stay !
Food and staff are superb. Hotel can provide more activities. Such as tennis court, dance on the beach, more organized snorkeling groups. Price for coconut onsite is super high. Highest I ever saw in the caribeans. Pool water was dirty on days when the sea was wild and wavey. The room service was not renewing our coffers and soaps every day. And was hesitant for refilling small size water bottles. But cleaners were superb. Restaurants are not great but the buffet is very well served and kept.

Royalton Bavaro Resort and Spa: Great family resort
Love the fry truck and lazy river. Second time back this year. Third to this resort. Very family oriented. A la cartes are nice but buffet has an excellent selection. Even a small buffet table for kids. Rooms are large. Resort is very clean. Lots of activities to do. Staff ( wait staff, activities staff, bar tenders, housekeeping) all do a great job and deserve your tips! The shows each night are great. They used to do more kids shows before the adult ones began but didn't see this happen this [... read more]trip. Easy check in and out.

Sunscape Puerto Plata: Great vacation!
The resort was clean. Staff very friendly and great service. It wasn’t a busy week which was fine so we had no problem getting a chair by the pool or the beach. Much busier on the weekend with the local people and much noisier. Pool music got way too loud and a lot of drunk noisy people at 3am.
Food was very plentiful and tasted wonderful. No complaints there. Enjoyed the popcorn at the theatre bar each night. The a la carte restaurants served very delicious meals. The wait staff were all so[... read more] friendly and gave us good service. The pool snack area served good good for lunch. Service a bit to be desired until the bosses were around and then top notch. Our room was a lovely size and kept clean. We lacked towels every day and had to call for more. Lifestyle Tropical Beach Resort: One of the best Hotels in DR
I have been going to the DR for many years and this Hotel by far is one of the biggest I have ever stayed at. Lifestyles is a beautiful well maintained resort with wonderful staff. Food at the buffet was great, drinks were delicious, shows were entertaining, rooms were clean. Overall I would give it an 8 out of 10. There were a couple of things that I was not pleased with. My mini fridge was not restocked daily as advertised, water pressure in the shower was not that great, I got very sick after[... read more] eating in the Chinese restaurant (so just stuck to the buffet)
I also didn't like the fact that there were no lounge chairs on the beach. I am a beach person and like to have my chair down on the sand for when I come out of the water. You had to ask security to pass one to you over the wall and then you had to drag it along the beach to where you wanted to sit. These were all minor problems and in no way ruined my vacation. Only other downfall is for people with mobility issues. The resort is so big and there are hundreds of golf carts but not everyone has access to use them if you are not VIP so it's hard to get around. There is a shuttle but I believe it runs every 25 minutes so u do spend a lot of time waiting around to get from place to place within the resort.

Royalton Hideaway Punta Cana: Hideaway at Royalton Punta Cana
The Staff
Starting with Hector, our great butler, down to the guest services staff and waiters, everyone was always smiling, pleasant and eager to please. Thanks to guest services for obtaining medicine for me from a local pharmacy.
Room
We had booked a swim-up room, which was one on the main attractions of this resort. Stepping down from our deck into the pool and going for a morning swim before breakfast, was a lovely experience. The rooms have normal size hotel closets and a dresser w[... read more]ith only 3 small drawers. This means that many items will have to remain in one's suitcase for the duration of the stay.
Food
Hector made reservations for us at a number of restaurant, where food was consistently excellent. The Steakhouse was number 1 for me, while others in our group preferred the Dorado or the Japanese restaurant. A number of lounges spread throughout the resort served great snacks throughout the day. The bar near the sports centre was our favorite. They served a health drink daily from 7 - 10 am, followed by a special of the day together with all other drinks.
Beach / Watersports
The beach was nice, but showed strong signs of erosion, especially near the sports centre. The resort is trying to protect its property with sandbags, but may eventually have to build a wall to hold on to its beach. - Unfortunately, we only managed to get a sailboat once during the week, due to weather concerns or the absence of the mandatory rescue boat.
Negatives:
7 of our group of 10 came down with an intestinal illness, which lasted between 1 and 4 days. We heard from others that we were not the only guests who got sick.

Royalton Splash Punta Cana: Loved it
We spent a week at the beginning of December at Grand Memories Splash with two children 7 and 11 year old. We truly enjoyed it - large and clean rooms, beautiful gardens, great food and entertainment. We were worried about the walk to Royalton, but we actually enjoyed the distance (which, by the way, is a 5 minute walk) because it made the resort feel more like a mini-town and not a confined space. The waterpark was awesome, and never crowded. We would definitely return.

Catalonia Bavaro Resort: Dissappointed
We unfortunately did not get what was expected. The room we had was a great location however in your add the rooms look like they were just newly built and beautiful however that is not the case. they have not been touched in over 22 years and that was backed up by staff. deteriorating wood, holes in the floors and shower, drab fixtures and bedding but was kept clean. We asked for hand towels every day and din not receive the whole week. Buffet food was the worse we have tasted in all the years[... read more] we have spent at all inclusive resorts. They do not use good cooks however the individual restaurants were much better. Not nearly enough lounges and shade by the pool or the beach. Guests have to get up very early to try to reserve a spot.
The service in the main buffet was awful. For all meals servers who are supposed to bring you coffee and water are standing around talking. Every day I had to go to them and ask them to please bring us water and coffee. Some of our friends who were also there agree with everything I am saying. There also wa a couple who were there last year from England and they said they see a drastic change and will not be back to the Dominican. We also feel that all employees should have to learn english which is the international language and it would be less frustrating to communicate every day with the staff.
It is unfortunate that the big wigs at the top of the ladder and who own the property don't always know what is going on at the bottom.
We came back from a week at the Magestic colonial. The resort is beautiful, staff amazing and friendly and we would definitely return! Our swim out room on the family side was fantastic! The beach was amazing - lots of loungers no seaweed. Food was good. Entertainment team did a great job and evening shows were fun. The plaza was a nice feature for live entertainment before the later show.

Playabachata Hotel: Not for Coffee Lovers
The hotel was nice, the rooms were comfortable and everything worked. The grounds were immaculate. The staff was very friendly to us foreign tourists, but not so friendly to the local guests who stayed over the weekend. This made me feel a bit uncomfortable because I feel that a resort is not a place to make these kind of class distinctions --a guest is a guest.
I usually travel to Cuba so this was my first trip to the Dominican Republic. At first I was impressed and jokingly called it "Cuba V[... read more]IP". I changed my mind when I tried to get a decent cup of cappuccino. It was not to be had. They had ''vending machine'' coffee where the cappuccino is from an instant mix. (In comparison, every Cuban 2 star hotel has an Italian coffee machine and they know how to use it.) Another twist in this tale is that there was a special coffee shop at the Senator hotel, just a few steps from my room. But here class distinction came into play again. Although both hotels, we were told, belong to the same company, we were not entitled to the same coffee. As a red-band guest from Playa Bachata, I could get an espresso, but for a cappuccino I would need a different color band from the Senator. At first I was willing to accept that and said that I would gladly pay for the coffee, but they would not accept money.
To uncover this mystery you need to understand that there is a company called Ultimate Leisure Club that wants to sell you a membership which then makes you a VIP and a cappuccino would then be one of the benefits. I went to their presentation, but they weren't happy with me because I didn't hand over my credit card which would have been ''necessary'' to receive the free gift. I declined the gift. The apartments they showed us were impressive but obviously over my budget. We also had an ominous feeling that we were the only real prospects there and that the other potential prospects were employees who were play acting. Of course I can't prove that but my queasy stomach warned me to watch out.
