Akumal Bay Beach and Spa Resort: As usual absolutely oustanding
Hotel right on the beach, food was just like home, beach was sandy bliss, snorkeling at its best. The staff are always friendly and have a great sense of humour. We had a junior garden suite which has its own hot tub and you can walk to the beach literally in under a minute, fantastic.

Iberostar Waves Tucan: Amazing resort
We arrived in the darkness so was hard to get a first impression. Staff at the check in desk were very friendly and professional.Baggage was taken to our quickly so we could change and get a late dinner. Food in all restaurants was very good with many choices. My favourite was the Japanese restaurant where the chef cooked at your table and put on quite a show. Activity staff were excellent in getting guests to participate and have fun.
Rooms were lovely and cleaning staff very attentive to thei[... read more]r jobs.
Grounds were immaculate and very creative with a jungle setting and natural caves and waterfalls.
Spa was very good and hot tub amazing.
We walked to local shopping for souvenirs.
I celebrated a Birthday while there and they helped me acknowledge it with champagne!!

Bahia Principe Explore Tulum: Big does always mean better
Beautiful large resort however because of its size the food was often cold or overcooked. The rooms are nice however it took
at least 20 minutes for hot water. The night shows started at 10 pm and were not very entertaining.. The beach was very
narrow with lots of rocks and seaweed. Over all I have been to much better places.

Grand Sunset Princess: Mixed feelings
Hôtel set-up is quite nice. Superb pool where we do not have to get up a 6

While making up our luggage to leave, we realized two pullovers were missing. They had not been worn during our 2 week vacation but were needed for our return in -10 weather. Platinum Yucatan Princess: Lovely resort
Check in was a breeze with the upgraded status - and champagne upon arrival. Unfortunately the room requested with two beds was not given and wouldn't be for two more days and we couldn't be bothered to unpack to pack back up again to unpack so we stayed where we were. South side rooms in block 5 are the place to stay with the swim up rooms and sun.
The entire place was spotless, though sometimes the pool seemed a little scummy.
Rooms were a great size with lots of room to move around and the [... read more]dual rain showers were awesome.
There was lots of room for hanging clothes and emptying the suitcase.
The beach area is nothing like the Dominican - quite rocky and dirty (garbage in water) but it was sure nice to be close to and hear the waves crashing.
Sunsets and Moons could both be seen.
Food was good.
I like the resort because it was the quieter of the three chains and you could travel to the other two and be busy and come back to this resort and feel the calm relaxed atmosphere.
Staff was friendly.

Bahia Principe Explore Coba: Beautiful resort
The resort grounds were stunning, the entertainment first class. Service was slow and minimal understanding of English was a bit frustrating but definitely worth a visit. The beach is great and clean with lots of great kids entertainment.
This resort was very clean and the pools and grounds well kept. There was a variety of entertainment. The staff were always pleasant and friendly.
There was a lot of variety in regard to what to do, eat and drink. All the drinks were yummy!
It had all the elements to make a great vacation!

Paradisus La Perla Adults Only Riviera Maya: Excellent Resort!
We spent February 12-19, 2018 at Paradisus La Perla. We’ve been to many all inclusive resorts and this is by far the best we’ve stayed at. It may have cost a bit more for us than others but it was well worth it. Upon check in, we were given an upgraded room in the Royal Service section. Although we couldn’t use the Royal Services, the room was really nice! There really isn’t much negative to say about La Perla....the service, the staff, the food (everywhere), the decor, the cleanliness, [... read more]the beach....everything was awesome! We didn’t go to the pool area while there, but we did see that people were placing towels on the chairs early in the day to reserve them. We went to the beach every day rather than the pool....the beach was great, there were waiters there and you could order food from a snack bar as well...nachos, burgers, hot dogs, etc. The one thing I would strongly recommend is that the resort put some signage up warning patrons of rocky areas in the water....we learned quickly where to go in the water where there were no rocks....we spoke to several people who actually sustained injuries from one area that was extremely rocky. Although La Perla is adults only, it does share some restaurants and the entertainment with the kid friendly La Esmeralda resort. If you want quiet at mealtime, I suggest sticking with the adults only restaurants. I did find that some “adults only†sections, like the Gabi lounge had kids at times I felt inappropriate, like at 10 at night, with adults in the bar scene, drinking, dancing and partying. Also the Melia Hotel reps tried to get us to attend an “information session†(time share??) about all their resorts, hotels etc...we have learned our lesson on this type of thing before and it took a few no thank yous, not interested for them to back off. I would highly recommend La Perla....we had an awesome vacation!!

The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences Playa Del Carmen: Barely 3 star room, 4 star everything else
Disclaimer: I’m an airline pilot that stays in hotels roughly 16 nights per month
The bad:
Our room in villa 12, (1204-2) had a broken table lamp, mould in the bathroom/shower/toilet, surface rust on all the metal finishes, broken shower door hinges, and paint splatter on the ground. This is disappointing because the modern decor would be great with some proper upkeep and attention to detail! Think W hotel style room with poor materials and workmanship. After mentionning all of this to [... read more]our Transat rep on the premises he walked us over the to the front desk and they just said we can’t do a room change, just write down what’s wrong with the room and we will send someone. Nothing was done during the whole 7 day stay and I stopped trying with our transat rep/front desk because they seemed completely unwilling to help.
Welcome champagne and fruit plate was not provided as per the transat booking details
This resort is very agressive on trying to upsell you at every opportunity. Such as, premium liquor, premium wine, certain dishes cost more, spa services, etc. I already paid for an all inclusive resort, stop pestering me for upsells when I’m trying to relax on vacation.
The good:
Medium size of resort is great for walkability
Lots of neat pools laid out around the villas
Patch of jungle with cool wildlife (monkeys, gator, boar)
Adult only pool/area is brand new
Almost all the food was very good
Service at bars and restaurants was very good
The taco lady in the mornings is amazing!
The rooms in the newer section by the adult pool are very nice!
The property itself is kept in very good shape.
In conclusion: With some upgrades to the older rooms and better front desk customer service this could truly be a 4-4.5 star hotel. For now it is not.

Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda: Excellent resort
The grounds and public areas were well maintained and very clean, the buffet restaurants offered a large variety of choices, our room was clean and comfortable and the staff responded quickly and effectively when we phoned to say we had no hot water in the shower. Check-in and check-out were efficient.
The a la carte restaurants gave us an opportunity to try some different menus - we liked all of them. The staff throughout the resort were unfailingly friendly and helpful. There were some ver[... read more]y loud young guests in neighbouring rooms but after complaints from some other guests, security dealt with the issue by encouraging them to party at the 24 hour bar instead of their rooms. From my perspective, this solved the problem. No complaints about this resort at all.

Ocean Riviera Paradise: OK Resort
The Hotel was clean. Rooms spacious and clean. Beds comfortable. Beach was awful, and too dangerous for kids. They need more service staff. Service was lacking as the ones working there weren't able to keep up. kids shows are non existent. entertainment didn't start until 9:30pm so if you have kids, you're out of luck. wouldn't call it a family resort. They need to put some thought into entertaining kids. The Privilege club is a joke, don't waste your money. The time share sales people are push[... read more]y and annoying and they follow you everywhere. Food was good, but desserts were awful. Mostly cookies or tasteless desserts. Nice coffee shop and kids loved the icecream shop.

Excellence Riviera Cancun: Excellente!
This was our 2nd time at Excellence Riv Cancun and it was just as amazing as the first. The fact that we met many people who said it was their 3rd/4th/5th time at this resort is a testament to the quality of the resort.
The staff is great, always working hard and happy to see you there. The restaurants are all great- Basmati and Chez Isabelle were our favourites. The pools were immaculate and the grounds just beautiful. They are constantly
cleaning, painting, grooming....
It is a quiet r[... read more]esort, with the average age probably 45+. The main pool is definitely where the action is- pool games, music, swim up bar... Every afternoon there is live music at the Sole bar at the main pool. There are lots of quiet areas around the other pools and the lazy river is so beautiful and serene.
We've never went to the same resort before, always wanting to try something different but I have to say our next time back to the Mayan we will be making our third visit to Excellence Riviera Cancun as we couldn't ask for anything better.

Selection Riviera Cancun: Family Friendly-ish
This hotel is a tough one to review because the grounds, rooms, pools are all lovely. We had a nice stay, but encountered some service issues that I think wouldn't exist if we hadn't taken our one year old. We aren't people who normally order room service, but because we had a baby with us, we ate in our room a couple of nights as he was too tired to go out. The hotel doesn't deliver any drinks to your room! We envisioned having a glass of wine on our balcony while our child slept, nope. Th[... read more]ey have great kids club and pool and splash pad, yet the evening entertainment is so loud it sounds like bongo drums outside your door, and goes on sometimes till 11 pm. Not ideal when you have children. We also found the "all inclusive" part to be misleading as they gave us such a hard time about premium alcohol every time we would order a drink. We tried to order Heineken every time my husband wanted a beer, and every time they would say they don't have any (despite the fact we could see other people drinking it). Then we would argue with them, and they would miraculously find it. Same goes for any premium vodka. Due to some service issues, we were told we would have a $150 credit on our room and we could use it to purchase something at the resort. When we went to do so the next day, the credit had disappeared and management claimed to not know what we were talking about. Other little things like the staff in the shop being rude when we asked to borrow an air pump (we could see it on the counter, no one was using it) and they refused to let us use it for our child's blow up toy. Other resorts the staff were much more accommodating, and would have blown the toy up for us. Overall the resort is really nice (apart from the evening noise) but it's these little service issues that left a bad taste in our mouth and we wouldn't return.

Iberostar Waves Paraiso Beach: Great place
We had a really great time. We found the rooms very clean. The food was good. The atmosphere accommodated everyone. You could be quite and relax, or have a really fun time. Really accommodating staff. We will go back.
Hotel was fantastic! Front Lobby was impressive and check-in was fast allowing for almost a full first day to get to know the resort.
Lobby bar was a great meeting place before activities and the bartenders always cheerful and helpful. Coffee martini's were fantastic.
Our room was quite spacious and clean. Housekeeping was very good. The bathroom was beautiful stone/marble with double sinks.
Food was very good. Mexican restaurant was delicious. Service at each a la carte was very good.

Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya: Nice Area
The hotel is a bit tired. The room we had was okay but smelled musty and was very damp.
The beach is very small and only waist deep with lots of reef and seaweed.
This is a place more suitable for family with children, there were many things for the children, a big pool and the resort did a lot of events with them.
It was a bit small and noisy, with the lobby having live music every night, and many rooms are around the lobby area.
The resort food was not great, but the a la cart restauran[... read more]ts were very nice.
The location is nice close to a marina and little shops to walk to.

Beautiful resort with 4 pools (one for children) and many restaurants. Lots of beachfront but unfortunately lots of dark seaweed in water and along beach. Bahia Principe Escape Sian Ka'an: Great resort
We liked almost everything about this resort. The food was great, the service wonderful. Nice and clean. The quiet pool at the resort is actually quiet (so often someone brings their own music to the quiet pool to the annoyance of other patrons - none of this here.) The resort is adults only, and fairly small so the restaurants are within 5 minutes of your room. The entertainment was truly amazing, unlike the rather mundane repetitive entertainment so many of the big resorts have. The ente[... read more]rtainment here was highly polished and professional. Great singers. We attended and danced almost every night.
This resort isn't on the ocean, but there is a a private beach reserved for the resort guests on the ocean, plus full use of all the Bahia Principe facilities in the ocean based resorts. The ocean is a 2.4 km walk from the resort, which took us about 25 minutes each way (a casual walk.) There is also a shuttle that runs about every 10 minutes if walking isn't your style.
We had a ground floor room with a large private patio garden and a Jacuzzi. The room was a good size, and we made good use of the patio and Jacuzzi. The room had to AC units so temperature control was simple. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The room has one large wall that includes two large patio doors opening onto the patio.
The only thing we didn't enjoy can't really be held against the resort - as we find it at every resort we go to. That is cigarette and cigar smoke. While Mexican resorts have come a long way in the last 15 years by banning smoking inside, they need to go a lot further in keeping the smokers away from the outdoor areas too. We were constantly moving to new seats at the resort outdoor bars or on the beach, trying to avoid inhaling smoke. I'm not sure if smokers don't realize that 50-75 meters is the minimum distance away you need to be (or if they just don't care) - but we struggled to find a spot where we couldn't smell cigar smoke. If there was a resort that banned all smoking - indoors and out - it was would definitely get our business, but until then, this resort gets top marks in all other categories.
One other issue - the lights in the room aren't all that bright. We used our cell phone flashlights a bit when looking in the makeup mirror and at other times. In the future, I might throw a headlamp in my luggage. Not a big deal, and I appreciate that less bright lighting is probably more eco friendly - but I'd suggest bring a small headlamp to help see at times.
