Barcelo Maya Caribe: Good Resort
The Barcelo Maya Resort is a collection of resorts (5 in total) on a large property with lots of amenities, decent rooms, and good food overall. If you get a good deal on the price, it is highly recommended. There are a fair number of a la carte restaurants, most which do not disappoint depending on your preferences. The buffets offer lots of choice and of good quality as well. The restaurants close to the beach are okay, but get a little boring after awhile, since the menu is very repetitiv[... read more]e. There is a decent beach at the south end of the property which is protected from the wind and calmer than the northern end. However, it's quite shallow and still rocky a hundred or so metres from shore. The beach at the north end is much more windy, wavy, and rocky, however, if you like snorkeling, this is the beach to go to, although you may have to swim a relatively far out from the beach to find the reefs. We found it very clean, and the staff very friendly, helpful and courteous. We have been there twice, if that is any testament to the quality of the resort. We stayed in the Maya Caribe, which is probably at the lower end of the scale for the 5 resorts. If we were to go again, we would try to stay in the Maya Tropical or the Maya Colonial, at the northern end; they seem to be a bit more upscale with nicer property. Or the Maya Beach at the extreme southern end which, at the edge of the property, is pretty quiet. We found the Caribe kind of noisy.

Ocean Riviera Paradise: Wonderful resort
Wonderful resort, best food we have had yet, multiple pools to find what you are looking for, staff is excellent. Could always find a seat at any of the pools or the beach. There are timeshare people every morning outside the buffet and in the lobby, but if you tell them you are leaving that day they will leave you alone.

Platinum Yucatan Princess: Very nice adult only resort
Very nice resort that was always very clean. All the staff were cheerful, pleasant and helpful. Lots of activities to do at the resort if you want a change from laying in the sun. Tons and tons pools space so if you don’t want to be by the pool with louder music you had endless possibilities to lay at other pools or the beach. Beach area was smaller due to hurricane erosion. My only complaint was the bed I had was a comfortable but old school memory foam mattress where I would wake up a sweat[... read more]y mess several times a night as my body couldn’t breath on it. By my last night I found a solution to put the coil hide a bed mattress on top of mine and then i slept fine. The buffet food was very good with lots of selections. The other restaurants were just as good. Thursday night was all u can eat lobster tail at the buffet. Amazing deal and supper delicious! Have the usual nightly entertainment but also several night cap bars to have a drink and chat with new found friends in the open air. I would say and older mature crowd. Still fun. Quiet resort with no kids.

Hyatt Vivid Playa Del Carmen: Royal playa Del Carmen
This was our 5th visit to the Royal and they have yet to disappoint us . The concierge Willemina went out of her way to accommodate us with our requests and the food and service was excellent . We are partial to the Pelicano restaurant because of the gorgeous view and even more so because of the fabulous staff - to name a few - Mario at the bar and Roberto , Pedro, Elano , Lucas , Manuel, Geronimo (and many others whose names I may not have mentioned ) at the Pelicano who remembered us each time[... read more] we returned and always went far beyond what was expected by going out of their way to make sure that we lacked for nothing . The staff at this resort is one of the main reasons that we continue to return each year.

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal: Amazing resort!!
If you're looking for a great dining experience and lovely grounds look no further than the luxury Bahia principe akumal resort in Mexico. We stayed in the adults only building that were upgraded. The rooms were roomy with a jacuzzi tub. The little touches like pillow service and aroma therapy scents added to the details that make this resort stand out! The alcarte restaurants were all fantastic with a wide variety to suit every need. The beach was not Cuba but warm and crystal clear. It is a bi[... read more]t of a bus ride to the resort (1 1/2 hours) but well worth it. The only thing that I would say is that everything closes at 11:00pm. You can still get snacks at the 24 hour bar but no music. If you're looking for a relaxing vacation this is your place.

Bahia Principe Explore Coba: Overall Great Experience
Overall we had a good time at this resort. We stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum resort in the past and thought we'd try this one since the kids activities and waterpark were here.
Positives:
- The kids club, teen club, theatre shows, several pools, and waterpark were all great for families.
- Pool chairs were relatively easy to find shade as long as you were out grabbing chais before 10am.
- Beach was gorgeous. They work incredibly hard to keep up with the seaweed on the beach. Th[... read more]e sand was soft especially directly in front of the gran Tortuga restaurant and Dolphins on the Tulum resort.
- You're allowed to bring your own floaties into the pools -- some resorts don't allow it.
- Pools were warm and no matter what pool we visited they all had shallow shelf areas for young children (we brought our 3 year old).
- Rooms all have mini fridges and are stocked daily with water, pop, and beer.
- Hacienda market area on resort was nice for shopping.
- Dolphinarium on resort with free show at 11:30 AM each day was also a nice perk.
- Staff overall throughout the resort were very friendly and welcoming.
Negatives:
- Bad service in the main buffet for most of the week. We eventually stopped tipping on day 5 because we were so tired of it. The wait staff barely acknowledged our existence. It was like pulling teeth to get water or place settings. I don't know if they were understaffed or what was going on but the service at Tulum buffet was never like this on our last trip.
- Food at main buffet was underwhelming. Always seemed the same day-to-day and not the freshest. Tulum buffet seemed better laid out and more attractive, fresh, and better variety.
- No chips/snacks delivered to the rooms. Although they had this for us at the Tulum resort.
- If you're staying at Coba don't bother visiting or checking out Akumal resort which is attached -- you will be kindly asked to leave.
- If you're not paying extra for prestige or privilege club at Coba you will feel a difference in that there are extra "special" trolley services door-to-door for those who have it -- we found this out by asking for a ride, they looked down at our bracelet, and said sorry this is for prestige guests only. We just did a ton of walking and waited for the regular trolleys at the lobbys like the rest fo the "peasants" haha.
- Got food poisoning at the Gourmet restaurant -- I'm sure the stuffed chicken with lobster inside was not cooked enough as I was sick all night afterwards.
- They don't provide drink service at the pools as in you have to go get your own drinks if you want one. They don't come around and take your order as other resorts we've been to have.
- Our room had a soft spot in the bathroom ceiling that you could literally push lightly on and it would move. Looked like mold that had been painted over and the room had a strong musty smell.
- Rooms were cheap on coffee, I could never get more than one pouch of coffee which meant if I had an evening coffee in my room I knew I'd be sacrificing the morning coffee. And we were tipping $5 US per day so it's not like we weren't tipping. I even left a nice note one day asking for two per day, got it once all week....maybe it was a different maid each day. It should be standard to always stock two pouches regardless.
- VERY UNIMPRESSED with Grand Bahia Principe's decision to eliminate all theatre shows on Thursday nights for their "Mexican Night" at the Hacienda (resort market area) which you then have to book and pay extra for....so much for "all inclusive". There were a lot of guests that were angry about this. All other resorts we've ever stayed at have done a Mexican night and went all out for their guests and have included it as a special experience for everyone. Money grab if you ask me and very poor decision on their part.
Overall we'd recommend this resort for families but if you enjoy the beach and good service, book at Akumal or Tulum as you'll be closer to the ocean feeling less closed in and seem to get a higher level of service at the buffets. Also Akumal gives you 7 a le cartes (one per evening) whereas you only get 3 for the whole week at Coba or Tulum. Had we known all the differences we would have paid the $100 each extra at the time of booking to stay at Akumal for the week opposed to Coba.
Bottom line if it's not a significant savings to stay at Coba choose one of the other two resorts you'll be happy you did.

Bahia Principe Explore Tulum: A week in paradise!
Our room was bright, clean and spacious. Toilet was a bit leaky so our bathroom floor was always wet. Our bar fridge was stocked every day with beer and soft drinks.
Our villa was close to dining, pools and beach. Beach is a bit rocky, so not the best for long walks. Always lots of chairs available - beach and poolside.
Good selection at buffet, great drinks. Good variety of a la carte restaurants. Entertainment at night was enjoyable.
Staff was friendly and helpful. A good offering of[... read more] excursions (we did the catamaran and tours of Mayan ruins).

Great place seem like there was always a buffet open if not bbqs set up by the pool and taco stands. Resort wasn’t a fan of the “smoking†almost had the police called. Only 20 buck cab in to playa delcarmen so easy to get in to town for night life.

Notables- Executive Chef Alan truly in command of the hotel. It was funny seeing him riding his bike away from beach restaurant. The beach restaurant has the best pizza.
Chef Alan and sous chef Ricardo and their team put on a super bowl extravaganza.
We will be revisiting this hotel.

Ocean Maya Royale: Superb Staff
The grounds are very well maintained and public areas kept exceptionally clean. Food at the buffet is above average and the specialty restaurants are excellent.
Pools are well maintained with plenty of beds etc and pool service is efficient. Only disappointment is the beach (a lot of seaweed) over which the hotel has no control. It is raked daily in attempting to keep tidy.
All staff are tremendous, friendly, polite and humorous.

Akumal Bay Beach and Spa Resort: Amazing place for vacation!
Second time in Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort. Just came back a week ago and ready to go back.Quiet and relaxing holiday, very friendly and smiling staff always ready to help. Beach and ocean amazing. A good place for snorkeling. We will definitely come back, although we are afraid that if they spread this place (they have in the plan to build 60 villas) will lose their charm.

Iberostar Waves Quetzal: Great Resort
We loved the place. Great for adults and kids alike. The staff was great and the buffet amazing. Had child minding services that were great. The room and facilities were kept at an amazing level of clean.
The first nice thing about the resort is that it's close to the Cancun airport, so you'd not stuck on a bus for an hour. It was about 20 minutes away. You're also not on the main Cancun strip, so there aren't all types of people from other places wandering the beach, or heaps of vendors like most resort beaches.
The whole resort was beautiful, with lovely pools, great restaurants and a lot of space where you could just hang out and relax. The buffet was impressive, with a huge variety, but o[... read more]f all types of really amazing food. We could have eaten something different and really delicious there every day. The other restaurants were great too; we tried the steak house, Italian restaurant and the seafood restaurant in the Hideaway.
The Hideaway section was everything you'd want in the adult section of a resort. It had its own lounge/reception for check-in, questions, cash exchange, etc. It even had a small bar and always had fruit and snacks on hand. Each floor had a concierge who could give you a printed itinerary each day with the day's activities, entertainment, opening and closing hours of restaurants/bars. There was always music coming from the pool bar, water and out of the pool activities, so it was a fun vibe. But there were quieter spots at other sections of the pool as well. The beach was beautiful, and like at the pool, you could always find a lawn chair. There were always towels, and waiters came by frequently to fill drink and food orders. There was a beach bar that always played music, but again, you could be further away from it if you wanted some quiet time.
The room was beautiful as well. I was sharing with a friend and we had 2 queen beds, though most rooms in that section have a king. A bonus, the beds were really comfortable, which I find isn't often the case in resorts. The room was very clean, and the staff was always very accommodating when we requested things for the mini bar, toilet paper, anything really. There was a huge tub and an amazing walk in shower, with a built in bench, two rain shower heads and another telephone shower head.
As a guest of the Hideaway, you still have access to all other sections of the resort so you can enjoy really everything on site. The evening entertainment was nice and there were a few bars, as well as a small club where you could hang out. The staff everywhere on site was friendly and helpful.
I would highly recommend this resort and will certainly return if heading back to the Cancun area. I had an absolutely fantastic time!
