Tryp Cayo Coco: Totally worth it
Great resort, nicely organized bus pick up from the airport and easy check in process. Plan to spend at least an hour lining up the next morning to book your restaurant reservations. It's a pain but very worthwhile as you will get very tired of the buffet food if you don't have any a la carte meals to mix it up. Beach is great, very well maintained - just remember to bring your snorkel gear so you can see the fish at the reefs. The resort has 2 pools; there is one quiet pool and a larger one in [... read more]the main area of the hotel. The larger pool can get old very fast as this is where they have activities throughout the day which basically comprises someone yelling into a microphone and lots and lots of music by Pitbull inbetween.
The food is totally fine - I mean you're in a tropical country on an island so if you're going to complain when they run out of bacon then maybe you should stay on your couch. They have fresh fruit (papaya, guava, canteloupe, pineapple) and you can have them make it into a smoothie or eat it as is. There is a nice mix of Cuban food and some North American food but again, you're on vacation, live a little and try some local food! As I mentioned before, the buffet can get quite repetitive so do try the restaurants - mainly the Cuban, Seafood and BBQ restaurants while the Italian was quite disappointing in my opinion. The absolute must do is visiting the local restaurant Lenny's. Just grab a cab at the front of the hotel - it will cost you about 20 CUC and you will arrive at a small outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean. The view is spectacular and the food is quite possibly the best seafood I've ever had. For 15 CUC you get a lobster tail, fish, shrimp, rice and salad. I would go back to Cayo Coco just to eat at Lenny's.
In summary, this place is worth it. The hotel is clean and well maintained, the staff are friendly and the beach is clear and not overcrowded. If you want a 5 star luxury hotel with room service and 2000 thread count bedding then you should probably just stay in a big city in the developed world. But if you want a relaxing trip to a beautiful beach with a dose of Latin culture then definitely try this place out.

Melia Las Antillas: ok for the price
Arrived very late at night and was given a basic room on the lobby level overlooking the top of the building facing the pool area, tiny deck with no view whatsoever, unless you count crates stacked behind the restaurant below. The next day I was upgraded, no charge, to one the of the bungalows closest to the beach - this was much nicer. The food was just ok, lots of variety at the buffet. Service ranged from so-so to excellent, especially at the lobby bar (many of the restaurant servers seemed t[... read more]o spend a lot of time chatting amongst themselves). Housekeeping did a good job, although they did have an annoying habit of yelling back and forth to each other from building to building. I definitely would not rate this a 4 Star "plus" relative to a 4 star in Mexico or Punta Cana but it was decent and the beach was beautiful. Overall I would say that if you are looking for a decent adult only place this is ok but I think it's fully, if not over, priced for what it is. For another $150 I would probably upgrade to the Paradisus next time.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Too quiet
First time to an adults only and will probably be our last as average age is low to mid 70s. Very few activities during the day and not well advertised tried rifle shooting one day the rifle was held together with duct tape. It was crowded and had to be up early to get a place at the pool and there was a bad smell at the beach so didn't go in the ocean.
The room was clean but could be refreshed a little bit of paint would be nice, the bar was stocked everyday but we do leave a couple of Pecos in[... read more] the fridge.
The a la carte's were all good but the buffet needs lots more staff, one dinner time we were half way through our meal when we finally got a drink. The wait staff are not too friendly but I think they are overwhelmed and it also doesn't open very early. The staff at the pool snack bar however are also very busy but very friendly and a lot of fun.
We didn't see any of the animation team until the day before we left up until then we though they didn't have any. The night time entertainment was good especially the water show.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Wonderful Adults Only Resort to stay in Varadero
We have stayed at this resort 3 times and we love it! It is our favourite place to stay in Cuba. We have become friends with many of the amazing & hard working staff. We are upgraded to the new buildings and they are modern and are close to the beach. We were able to experience the new Royal Service on our last stay and ate at their restaurant and the food & service was wonderful! You cannot stay there without going to the teppanyaki restaurant (ask for Emedio). It is a ton of food but worth eve[... read more]ry morsel. So entertaining and interactive and makes for a fun night! You site with others so it is nice to meet new friends! Also visit the 24 hour snack bar for a great hamburger and Yicel's famous banana mamas. The resort is always clean but as with most visits to Cuba (no fault of the resorts) they can run out of supplies and certain types of food. The buffet is very good with a wide variety of dishes and theme nights. They could change things up a tad but there are many choices to select from. I have never had a bad food experience at this resort nor any of the other places in Cuba as we have been 7 times and are returning to the Paradisus Pricess Del Mar for a 3rd April in a row in 2015. The beach is beautiful with many spots and great for walking. You feel safe here but the security is not "in your face". It is almost at the end of all of the hotels along the beach so it is nice. If you want to venture into Varadero (highly recommended) it is easy to get an antique taxi and the great guys at the front will help out with that for you. The only downfall with this resort is the gym does not open until 7 am and I enjoy a very early work out so i can be on the beach early. I do participate in beach activities and my husband plays beach volleyball everyday. They do not have a large number of a la carte restauants and we only go to a few but the meals are always enjoyable. I can go on and on LOL. I always refer this resport to friends who want to visit Cuba and a few have gone and thanked me for sending them there. Overall if you are wanting to experience a wonderful adults only resort with amazing staff & service then you have to visit here.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: The best resort and vacation we've had in Cuba!
Upgraded to Royal Service and were overwhelmed by unlimited 'Royal ServiceS'. The unlimited champagne is a very nice VIP ! The butler service brought our breakfasts, all special orders, for us to luxuriate on our Bungalo's veranda. The open air Rain Shower in our back private patio was super refreshing and the jacuzzi tub was Nancy's wake up delight. We loved dipping in the spa's private seawater pool and service at the private Royal Service beach was attentive, swift and unobtrusively caring!

Melia Las Antillas: Ok trip with my family
I went to Milia Antillas for 4 days and as soon as I enter lobby I had a feeling it was not going to be good. The room was dated and everything looks dirty. They don't provide wrist bands so when I went to the beach and back I was stopped by security as he thought I wasn't from the resort for some reason, lucky I had a paper towel card that said the resort name on it. It rained one day the entire place was flooded and everywhere in the lobby and restaurant was leaking they placed buckets to catc[... read more]h the water. The staff was really wonderful, I would not go back to the this resort if I ever go back it would be for the restaurant staff. I will like to take back some gifts for them, I feel really sorry for them as they work for $20! a month really sad. This resort is no 4.5 star.

While there were some issues with water one day it was no fault of the hotel. The entire area had issues. Beaches are stunning. Water crystal clear. You could not go away for a weekend for the price I paid to go here. Pools great. Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Amazing Week in Paradise!
From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. The staff was very friendly and greeted us with a welcome glass of champagne. The resort grounds were beautiful and our room was very clean and in a very good location (building #36) about half way in between the lobby and the pool (but a little closer to the pool and beach area). Our maid Yolangis was lovely, very friendly and greeted us with a smile each morning. She took good care of us by ensuring our room was clean and well stocked each day. It [... read more]was nice to have beach towels in the room upon arrival. The pool was very nice, clean, with lovely views of the ocean, although it could use a little paint refresh. No problem ever getting a lounge chair in either the sun or shade. The bartenders were great and took good care of us at the swim up bar. The beach was also amazing - clean with beautiful white sand beach. Everyday staff helped us procure loungers under an umbrella and we spent hours in the crystal clear, warm water swimming, looking at all the colourful fish and occasionally feeding them bread. Lots of coral, so great for snorkeling, but also lots of sandy areas for swimming. The food was also very good. The first day we arrived at noon and they were having a pig roast on the beach, which was amazing. We loved the a la cartes - the food and service was very good and we also had no trouble and enjoyed the service and food at the buffet as well. Lots of variety and the wait staff was very friendly. The nightly entertainment was also very well done. The young entertainers worked so hard and were very talented. We enjoyed a couple of water ballet events which were amazing and one night there was a circus, which was very entertaining. We also went to the YHI Spa and enjoyed a very relaxing couples massage by the ocean, which was amazing. The staff took very good care of us and pampered us with drinks and a lunch by the ocean on the deck. Our Sunwing Rep Madeline was also wonderful, answered all of our questions, and helped us connect with our daughter who was on vacation in Holguin at a resort about five minutes away. On a daily basis we would run into Carlos, who seemed to be a customer service manager, and he would greet us warmly and ask us if we were enjoying ourselves and if we needed anything. The extra special touches we received at Paradisus Rio de Oro really made this a special vacation to remember and I would definitely recommend it and go back again. However, I would like to try the Royal Service next time as I heard so many good things about it and perhaps go for nine days in order to really feel relaxed. Thank you Paradisus Rio de Oro for an amazing vacation!
