Gran Muthu Imperial was disappointing from the beginning
During check-in there were many guests arriving at the same time and a long lineup and wait which is understandable. What is not understandable is that there was only one employee doing the task. Susanna was overwhelmed and disorganized. At the same time (Suzanna) became impatient and rude after my daughter suggested that the forms for check-in could be given to us before we approached the desk, so that check-in could go faster. She be[... read more]gan speaking so fast we couldn’t understand her, and when questioned she said she needed to speak fast because she was in a hurry, which only lengthened the process.
After arriving in our room we discovered that the sliding glass door didn’t lock, the safe was not working, nor was the t.v. We had service people coming in and out of our room for a day. The t.v. didn’t work after many attempts.
After returning from the beach late afternoon, the room had not been cleaned, nor the beds made. There was dark hair all over the top of the dresser.
We reported this and were told that the maid said we asked for the room NOT to be cleaned. Untrue.
When taking a shower we discovered that it was not draining properly, and the water leaked onto the floor, flooding it. When speaking to other guests, they said they had a similar problem.
The following day we attempted to resolve the issues but the front desk did not always answer he phone which became habitual. We finally contacted the manager who moved us to another room on the same floor.
Our housekeeper would hang up the same used towels, which were on the floor. One day she wrapped them up tightly into swans and when we unwrapped them they were our wet towels we previously used. Our beds were made, but the sheets not changed for the whole week. On the day before checkout, I was in the room when the housekeeper was cleaning and saw first hand as she picked up the towels to fold them and put them back for reuse. When I asked for fresh towels she seemed confused.
When we went to the hospitality desk to report this, they were appalled but nothing changed. I’m wondering what level of training the have.
It’s unfortunate that we were not aware that there was a new hotel, Gran Muthu Raiinbow, under the same ownership, which only had 50 guests, and we should have been given an upgrade instead of dealing with daily frustrations.
The food choices were not great. Sometimes they ran out of certain things and were waiting for a shipment, which I understand happens on a regular basis.
The highlight of our trip were our servers, Yanet, Lisandra and Yanexsy, who worked the breakfast and lunch shift. They could not do enough for us. They should be commended for excellence in their work, which the did with pleasure.
As for the beach, there continues to be rocks and boulders in the swim area including seaweeds. We were told by other travellers who stayed at other resorts in Cayo Coco, that machinery removed the seaweeds daily as well as any rocks. We saw machinery on the beach daily, but it sat on the beach doing nothing.
This was rated as a 5 star hotel, which it isn’t. It should be rated 3 star I feel that we should have been discouraged from booking at this resort and other suggestions made as we were dealing with a knowledgeable agent. That is extremely disappointing.
As well, in speaking with other guests,
everyone said they would never return.
I feel that my daughter and I should receive some compensation for the daily aggravations we had to deal with.
The lobby service was appalling. Most times the phones were not answered. When my daughter asked about the weather she was told she would have to come down to the lobby, or ask our rep, meaning Air Transat. The rep laughingly said that oh yes, she was responsible for everything!

Sol Turquesa Beach: Super nice resort...
Everything is subjective but we love this resort with a lot of vegetation. It has some very nice pools (cascading pools on different levels). A downside it could be that is relatively large and if you don't have rooms starting with 4** or 5** you are pretty far from everything.
Our maid (Ileana) made a very good job in cleaning the room and changing the towels every day.
The beach is very nice, clean and with a lot of shade from mangrove trees, but the water it was a little too shallow (and wi[... read more]th sea-grass ) for my taste. On the beach (free) pedalo, kayaking, wind-surfing and catamaran as activities options.
The food was a little repetitive and the chicken was not too much (I never seen chicken breast for example).
The stuff was super friendly.
I recommend the short (free) trip offered by the hotel at the bat cave (Yunior as animator made a nice job).

Gran Muthu Imperial: Amazing Resort, but more importantly...AMAZING STAFF!!!
I have stayed at the Gran Muthu Imperial now twice. Let me tell you, the second time I was treated like a VIP guest. They went out of their way to make sure that everyone feels like their most important client.
From the reception process and welcoming spirit, to the feeling that you are now part of the MGM family!
The bellhops are so polite and respectful....Kevin would do anything to ensure a guest is taken care of, so very patient and attentive! The rooms are excellent and views are spect[... read more]acular from almost everywhere in the resort. If anything isn't working, which we rarely saw an issue, they fix it right away! The chambermaids make everything look beautiful, the towel designs are awesome, bathroom is impeccably clean! On to the other areas of the resort.....the Bartenders in the Sports bar, in particular Yadianis, are so professional and yet it feels like you went to your favorite pub at home and they see you every week. Alexander, the tennis instructor (who also works with the entertainment crew), is the most professional and skilled instructor. Always has a smile and a kind word whenever you see him...a real pro at his instruction on the court! Liuba and Williams from the entertainment team are just so full of excitement and spirit! They make sure that the guests are enjoying themselves at all times, even when they are not doing a poolside game or lobby activity, they make a point to mingle with clients and see how they are enjoying their visit.
The swim up bar has the best guys working to make sure you are enjoying yourself..Randy and Abel are a great team! Ask for the "Randy Special" it's amazing! The guys at the Snack bar (open 24 hours), Hector, Alejanro, Jose, - just amazing guys...try the Havana Special or a Spanish coffee!...so good! Now for Food....this is always the question people ask... It is good overall. We have to remember they are working within their limitations! They always do their best to ensure that you have what you need. The omelettes are awesome, Pasta is great!...depending on how adventurous you are will determine what your culinary experience will be. The Cuban nights have some delicious Cuban favourites and the pulled pork is beyond compare! The aLaCarte options are good, but again it depends on your taste. Our favourite was the Seafood restaurant. Close to the beach, they treat you like you are at an upscale restaurant and the Salmon is delicious! This is definitely my favourite resort of all that I have stayed at. I am definitely going back! See you soon MGM family!

Grand Memories Santa Maria: Sadly worn resort
This resort is well past the point of needing some tlc.
the pool is sub standard and does not have a swim up bar. The paint in general looks like the painters were blindfolded, the walkways are in bad shape and mostly unlit. The rooms are antiquated and the beds are thin, hard and full of springs that ruin any chance of a good nights sleep. In our building there were no lights working in the hallways. No coffee maker and all the drawers were inoperative. Every room that we saw including ours h[... read more]ad a ceiling fan that had hanging blades that resembled a flower and never did work. In general it was the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. The only redeeming quality was the staff.

Playa Vista Azul: Worst resort I have ever been to in cuba
I have travelled to Cuba resorts for 10 years and have always looked forward to going back. Until now. I have never stayed at such an terrible resort in Cuba in all of my 10years. The food was disgusting. The hotel is only five years old and looks like it is about 20 years old and never been painted. Met two cockroaches for a first in Cuba running around my room upon arrival. The dishes at the buffet had to be checked before you put food on them as someone’s last meal was still there. The frui[... read more]t was can, never fresh. Most food was cold the 4 restaurants did not take reservations and could only seat about 40persons at a tile and people who paid extra had first choices. The hotel has about 900 rooms. Restaurant to small for resort. Ran out of white wine three out of six days. I was told I couldn’t have another glass of wine at supper one nite because it was warm. The bed spreads were dirty. I could go on and on but I just want to forget my worst vacation ever. Advertising as a 4plus. Would not even give a three star. Trip central needs to check out there stars a bit closer. The only think good was the ocean view. I think I should win the contest just for what we put up with. Will second guess trip central next time. Even the staff at the bar at the front were unfriendly, which is so unusual for Cuba. Would not even recommend to my worst enemy.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Very satisfied
Resort well kept, staff friendly, food edible but not great a bit monotonous especially breakfast. They need to improve their coffee in buffet restaurant, more like brown hot water. Coffee at lobby bar from expresso machine is good but has a lineup most of the time. Vacation was good value for money.

Tryp Cayo Coco: BEWARE—- you do not get what is posted on the site description.Paid a lot of $$$ not worth it
Very old Resort it shows its age, grounds around the 3 buildings they put vacationers in were taken care of but the rest of the resort was a different story.
Many, many buildings left empty resort might have had about 300-350 people the week we were there March1-8 running at 30% capacity.
No toilets hardly or toilet paper, no paper towels and all the hand driers didn’t work at all. Not enough washroom on the property at all especially if your at the beach you had to come up to your room, t[... read more]hat’s because the Beach Grill is closed and the washroom facilities were in there.
Bars not opened, Bar at the quiet pool in the middle of the resort was closed permanently as well, beach grill closed permanently.
Hot Tub by the main pool was drained bone dry. Bar and snack bar was never opened when it was suppose to be 10am-11pm, might have opened up at 6pm for a few hours.
Husband walked the Resort every night and he said they had a Transport Truck at the back of the Resort and they were loading furniture and beds from the un-occupied rooms onto to the truck. Truly feel this Resort is having financial issues.
Sad very sad, we couldn’t even get into a Specialty Restaurant because they were only opening 1(one) a night we could get Reservations the night we were flying home.
If anything good came from this vacation it was the Staff & Customer Service
No issues there. They were all fantastic. They work very hard to make us happyâ¤ï¸â¤ï¸
Food in the Buffett was awesome so tasty and plenty.
Truthfully wasn’t worth what we paid and other guests there had paid 350.00 per person less than us.
Not going back there Cayo Coco is gorgeous but will choose a different Resort next time.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Great Resort
The grounds are very well kept. The employees from maids to floor washers are absolutely friendly and helpful even though some of their English is quite minimal. A la carte resturants were good. The beaches--three were also great, one main beach area and two smaller ones with access to the the reef for snorkeling without leaving the grounds. The mix of people was families to singles. Many Canadians, french and Englishspeaking, Russian, Italians and Cubans making up the balance. Only negative th[... read more]ing I can see is there were no see ums there and I did get some bites--that said I would return as it was great value for the money.

Sol Turquesa Beach: Great employees but resort has issues.
We have mixed remarks about this resort. Good, Bad and Ugly.
Most of the shortages locals are blaming on Trump and his blockage of fuel leaving Venezuela for other countries including Cuba.
Good: food was great for Cuba but missing common items such as bananas, pineapple for the 1st week, and assord booze.... how do u run out of Rum, Coffee and Cocoa Liquor in Cuba?
And Vodka? (the Russians were not impressed)
They say they have not had tomato juice since November 2019.
On on Wendseday n[... read more]ite they did have all the lobster you can eat.... AMAZING!
Great breakfast, lunch and dinner!
We went to 3 specialty resturants and nothing very impressive. A few people became sick from the "Seafood" including myself and the common entree seemded to be the "Seafood Casserole", all the rice and veggies were cold!
The 1st week there we complained we had no coffee maker and the TV did not work properly.... took till the second week to get those problems fixed.
Front door and patio doors did not lock properly, front door was fixed a few times but never fixed the patio door ... there is a room safe tho!
There are 4 pools including the swim up bar pool which everyone referred to as the "Pee Pee" pool, Could be because there is no washrooms near the pool area!
The 1st week was at 30% capacity but after 120+ Russians came in you had to start playing the "towel" game to save a chair in the pool area.
The beach had the hard plastic chairs unless you paid extra for "Diamond Club" (I dragged the nice blue fabric chairs to the beach from the pool area).
Lots of steps here so if u have issues with that stay away.... we enjoyed the extra effort to get around.
The beach is not the greatest but was ok, not good for snorkeling.
The french fries and pizza was good from the beach bar.
The ugly about this resort is the "No See Em's".... everyone was getting bites, this is the worst i have ever seen in Cuba in 30 + visits.
The price was good at $1130 for a 2 weeks stay otherwise i would not have taken this resort having been here 10 years ago and not impressed then for a higher price.
We heard the place is closing for updates, my suggestion would be for added washrooms near the pools and beach, better mattresses, beach showers to wash off salt and sand and a pre-check on the rooms to make sure all is in working order. And get rid of the hard plastic chairs at the beach.
With these improvements i would say it is a 4* resort but not at this time only maybe a 3.5*
But again have to say the food is a 4* even with the shortages.

Hotel Bella Costa: Great staff, amazing weather, resort in need of upgrades though !!!
This is our 8th time in Cuba so we are very accustomed to travelling there. This is a nice size resort. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The ocean view and beach are amazing. Pool is also nice size but cool. Jacuzzi's were only filled later on our vacation but water was cold and no jets.
We were in a balcony room facing the ocean on the second floor. The entire room is in serious need of upgrades and repairs. Toilet tipsy, missing ceramic on tiles, furniture heavily scuffed, beddi[... read more]ng and towels greyed out. Cushions filthy and smelly, yet our chamber person did everything she could to make it welcoming, clean and beautiful towel art. Fridge was not restocked, except for water, thankfully !!! Elevators did not always work, when they did, they often did not stop level so this was a trip hazard.
Entertainment (interior) area was not designed for entertainers so you could barely see the shows if you were anywhere further than the second or third row. These people try really hard to entertain and not always under the best conditions. Exterior entertainers (one of which we participated in) crossed boundaries in this period of hypersensitivity on Coronavirus and STIs. They were mimicking an aboriginal ritual and at one point, sprayed participants by putting liquids in their mouth and spraying us. That is totally unacceptable. So many diseases/infections transmitted through bodily fluids. I was shocked and officially complained !!!
The food (especially deserts) at the specialty restaurants was often similar or same as the buffet but tasty nonetheless. The beachfront restaurant was very nice as it had all the food in covered display cases. Loved eating there right by the ocean.
Booked an amazing private tour to Havana with our party of 6. Guide and driver were fun, knowledgeable, respectful and extremely proud to show us around. Very pleasant experience actually. Havana has had major restorations over the years since we had last been. Lots of opportunities to give to locals. Be sure to be clear on expectations because you can easily spend $20-30 pesos within 25 feet if you accept all offers of caricatures, musicians, etc...
Above and foremost, Cubans are such warm and caring individuals, THAT was key and it made our vacation worthwhile. Would I go back to that resort? Likely not !!!

Tryp Cayo Coco: Will never go anywhere else but the Tryp!!
The staff at this resort are amazing! Naymi, Uberlandis & Yosgvany at the lobby bar are the best. They look after me year after year. Margey and Yanelis at the buffet save me my table and my juice at breakfast or my wine at lunch & dinner are already on the table when I return with my plateful of amazing food. I eat more at this resort then I eat at home. This is my third year at the Tryp and once again I will never go to another resort. My room this year was a little far away from the lob[... read more]by and one of the older rooms, but beds are comfortable, and they get me into a ground floor room so I love sitting on my patio reading. We had three overcast cool days but still made the best of the holiday. My only complaint would be the maid service this year. I have always had excellent maids in my past visits, but this year she was almost non-existent. No fancy towel designs, no clean towels (even though gifts were left on the bed everyday for her). Sad that Rudy is no longer there to golf cart me to my room and pick up and my luggage up at the end of the holiday, but the service was still great. It is an easy walk to the market, which is a fun experience. I can't wait til next year to return (or hopefully before). Once again, amazing resort and the price is right.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Well appointed hotel
The Grand Muthu was a great place to stay. Rooms were always clean, with lovely bedding/towels and the bed/mattress allowed me to rest comfortably --and I have arthritis. Staff were polite and always helpful. The food was good and there was more than enough variety. Everyone/everything made my trip worthwhile. It would have been helpful to have a binder/booklet of helpful information in your room; i.e. available restaurants/hours of operation, kids club info, phone #s/general instructions, avail[... read more]able activities/times. Many complained about lack of bottled water but we found out how to get filtered water at the bars. Bring an insulated mug
