El Dorado Seaside Palms: Very big with unswimmable beach
Big old hotel but very clean and tidy. Service was great. Beach was awful. Swimming, snorkling not existant, very shallow with some construction in the water. Big hotel with carts going around all the time. Nice jungle area with lots of wild life and pretty flowers, very fresh air.

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Barcelo Maya Tropical
This hotel is kept immaculate! The grounds are beautiful. Water features and fountains are beautiful and clean. Our premium room was no disapointment! A turn down and chocolates left each evening. Towels were in abundance - even face clothes! The al a carte restaurants that we went to were all very good. The beach buffet is the best. And the beach was beautiful soft white sand with turquoise water! And the drinks were exceptional all the time. It was a wonderful vacation!

Sandos Caracol Nature Resort and Water Park: some good some not so good
Grounds - very interesting, cenotes, water slides, etc., however: terrible to get around for anyone with mobility issues, spoke to several people, all said the imitation cobble walkways were difficult to get around on
Rooms - okay nothing special
Dining - poorly organized, on line in buffet, food not well organized as compared to other resorts eg. bacon and sausages at one end of buffet eggs and omelets at the other they should be together, one line for buffet they should have several stations[... read more], one for desserts, one for salads, etc.
In general the resort is okay but lacking in some ways, roof over buffet leaks like a sieve
Service - poor at the front desk especially when compared to other resorts, however; once you get away from the front desk they have some amazing people that really helped
Note: while I am older my comments are based on the fact that the trip was a gift to my children and grand children and I would not recommend this resort to someone planning a similar trip

Ocean Coral and Turquesa: Large Resort with lovely staff
Large resort with a variety of restaurants. The buffet always had lots of choices but dishes emptied quickly and it took time to replenish them. The app to book a la carte restaurants rarely worked. The place was clean and employed lots of staff who were always pleasant and helpful. The downside to the place was the raccoons and other wildlife that came out at dusk. During the day there were mosquitoes, no-sedums and biting ants. Some people had severe reactions especially to the ant bites.

Sandos Caracol Nature Resort and Water Park: Never bored!
This resort offered so much to do over our stay - shows, water park, pool, beach, trails, and cenotes.
We attended the circus, Disney and fire shows and they were all amazing.
The food at the buffet was good, although the set up leads to a lot of waiting in line. Getting reservations at the a la carte restaurants was difficult especially with the mixed messages on how far in advance you were able to book. Each restaurant is different, and is booked through the app. You likely will not be abl[... read more]e to get a reservation anywhere for your first 3 nights.
The water park was so much fun for my children (aged 7 & 5), double check height requirements for the slides so your children aren't disappointed. My children also enjoyed kids club, and asked to go back every day - they played video games, watched movies, did crafts, played on the indoor playground. The staff were super friendly and I felt very comfortable leaving my children in their care.
The wildlife seen on resort was amazing, and we all enjoyed seeing the monkeys from our rooms balcony. Keeping in mind that this resort has many natural bodies of water throughout, the mosquitos were to be expected.

Barcelo Maya Colonial: Meh….did not live up to the Review hype
I had a quick 3-night stay. In general, muh. I rarely post reviews but noticed that negative reviews disappeared quickly.
The place is huge although laid out in such a way that is walkable. The common facilities are in good shape, and the bars and buffet run efficiently. Nothing beyond ordinary.
Can only speak to the Jalisco building where I stayed:
-No face clothes in room
-power outlets were scare. You can plug in your laptop or you can have a lamp. Chose one!
- Wifi regularly[... read more] fails completely. Not just slow - it’s gone.
- No hot water
- “Rain head” shower had little pressure and basically gurgled water.
Doing a quick solo vacay, So I’m in / out of the buffet quickly, but there were many occasions that not a single sever made contact or offered a drink!
The beach and the facilities are why you come here, Beach (sand) is 9/10 in my opinion. Lots of chairs, coverage if you want it. The water, looks beautiful but there is only one clear path out, the rest is rather rocky and treacherous, and a number of guest got banged up. On a calm day you can clearly see this, on a rough day you can’t
I can’t recommend, nor would I return.

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Paradise but not for Black or queer people
This place was great by vacation standards, in that it was beautiful, well kept, and had decent pools and food. I just wanna say, though, that if you are a person of colour or visibly queer…a warning. We naively didn’t really think about it too much, and ended up arriving on the same week that the majority of the guests were people from small towns around Canada. You know uncomfortable it can feel to be in a small town sometimes? It was like that x1000. The amount of stares my Black partner got [... read more](ranging from curiosity to gawking to disgust) and the discomfort we felt being a couple that are both women (we definitely weren’t comfortable to hold hands or anything) was enough to convince us that mid-budget resorts aren’t really worth the risk for us in future. It wasn’t really the staff, it was the other guests. We ended up moving to a less busy area of the hotel after spending the first two days of our trip requesting that they help us. It took a LOT of effort and time to get them to agree, which is rather disappointing. We’ve travelled through non-resort Mexico before and it was totally fine, nothing like this. I just want to put this out there for ppl to consider before committing.

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort: Lovely resort, some issues around the service
Overall the resort was great, but the check in and front desk staff weren’t very welcoming or helpful, while servers and many staff were lovely it felt like other staff didn’t provide needed information and weren’t helpful. I’d also say that booking transport to and from the airport separately would have improved the experience since we waited over an hour to leave the airport while they organized the transport provided and then spent longer dropping off other guests in other areas

The location is excellent. The beach is amazing. The rooms are good. All of the staff are very good. The food is decent. The efforts of all the staff was the best I have ever seen. Royal Hideaway Playacar: Uneventful vacation
This was a very small resort which we knew before booking. The staff cater to repeat guests and no pool chairs are available as they are all reserved before 600am to frequent guests. No buffet for dinner so if you don't like the food at the resteraunt you order room service. Resteraunts were ok but not flavorful food except for the tapinaki.
Constantly ran out of booze at the only open bar. Not top shelf booze. This si the kind of resort that you are forced to relax cause there is literall[... read more]y nothing to do. They had craft classes and other classes during the days but they were all booked before we even got there by the members. Drink service at pools and beach was poor for new guests waiting sometimes an hour.
Average age of guests is 60.
Had a relaxing vacation in this small resort so thankful for that. Just not worth the money we paid for it. Lotts of other smaller resorts are cheaper in playacar this resort only caters to repeat guests. Beach was nice but a whole lot of jellyfish in the ocean knee deep so didn't go in. Heated pool is nice but no chairs available even at six am

Generations Riviera Maya: Not as advertised
We stayed at Generations in November 2025. We were extremely disappointed with the accommodations, service and amenities. Caution to anyone booking; this property is not as advertised and is not a 5 star hotel, rather 3.5 star at best.
My wife and I have travelled extensively and stayed at many all inclusive resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, including a previous stay at the El Dorado (adults only section) where we had a great 5 star experience so we were expecting more from Genera[... read more]tions. It seems that the family section is an afterthought compared to the adult side.
For the cost, Generations is not worthwhile. If you are looking for a real family friendly resort, consider something else.
Rooms - overall very outdated. Our first room was a regular ocean view suite and was dark, dingy and dirty upon check in. The couch that was supposed to be a pull out for our daughter was not a pull out and basically a sheet over top a nasty, stained sofa. We spoke to management and Fabiola was great at helping us find another room and kindly upgraded us to the largest suite available. While the decor was outdated and room a little rundown, it was clean, spacious, and significantly improved our experience.
Beach - Mexico is challenged with seaweed, no surprise to us. Most resorts do their best to manage this by cleaning the beachfront regularly so it’s still a usable space. The adult only section was completely clean while the generations side did not get cleaned for 3 days until I complained. Because we are travelling with a two year old, we were not permitted in the clean beach areas. Within 20 minutes of complaining there were 3 people raking up seaweed.
Service - staff are generally very friendly, polite and respectful. However considering this is a family resort, there should be a little more effort put into accommodating request especially when it comes to young children. We asked a few times for vegetables (eg steamed broccoli) or a simple piece of grilled fish for our daughter but there was no accommodating anything that wasn’t on the menu.
A simple example, my daughter asked for sprinkles for her pancakes. Knowing they had sprinkles from the ice cream bar the night before, I asked if they could bring some out and was told that was just not possible.
Another example; we ate at the Palms grill for lunch, we asked for a popsicle at the end for my daughter. We were told no because they closed at 3pm…it was 3:03 when I asked…ridiculous.
Maybe we are being particular but there are really small things that staff could be doing to make guests experience a little better.
Food - breakfast and lunch buffet, no complaints. Dinners at the buffet are mediocre at best. We eat pretty much everything but noticed very few vegetables in general and no fruit (except at breakfast). Unfortunately we were forced to eat at the buffet most nights (more on this below).
Evening taco station poolside was really good.
Other than the buffet. All restaurants are à la carte. There is no pool side food service or outdoor grille for an easy lunch. This made things challenging with a small kid as you need to dry off / change before getting food. You can also do room service which might have been a little easier in hindsight.
Restaurant Bookings - other than the buffet there are only 3 restaurants available to Generations guests (Indian, Asian, Wine Bar). You can eat on the adult side but you need to leave your kids behind. We had a very hard time getting a reservation at any of the 3 restaurants especially for an earlier seating (because of a young kid) as those times were often booked by guests on the adult side who have access to close to a dozen different restaurants.
Buffet is small with limited capacity. At peak times there were sometimes long waits, which becomes frustrating when you have so few dining options. Keep in mind the hotel was only about 40% capacity so I could only imagine the experience during a high-season.
Suggestion to the hotel: you should probably block off earlier seatings times to give priority to generations guests so they aren’t stuck at the buffet all the time. Or allow families to make reservations on the ElDorado side if even just certain nights of the week to still keep some exclusivity for those staying on the adult side.
Amenities - not a lot for kids to do at Generations itself (no splash pad or slides, no kids pool, limited activities and programming). There is a nice little indoor play area with activities and face painting (Wendy was super nice!).
One positive note, as a guest you do get some free access to the Nickelodeon water park. While our daughter (age 2) was a bit young to fully enjoy the park, the property is fantastic and I would definitely recommend a visit there whether you stay at Generations or not.
You also get all inclusive access to Maroma beach club. We did not get to take advantage of this, but it looks like it would be a fun day.

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun: Great resort
Everything is wonderful - rooms, beach, sea. Service was great. Food is ok to good. Entertainment is good. Main things going for this hotel is beach, although pool area is amazing, as well. Hoping to go there again soon.
