I just returned from a fantastic and rejuvenating getaway at Memories Jibacoa. This resort checked off everything I wanted for my solo trip. The location is absolutely picture-perfect — a stunning, clean beach framed by beautiful mountain views. The coral reef right off the shore is incredible for snorkeling!
The staff are truly wonderful — friendly, attentive, and hardworking. They go above and beyond to make sure you’re enjoying your vacation. There were no shortages of food or power during[... read more] my stay, and the meals were fresh and satisfying.
If you’ve done your research on Cuba, your expectations will be exceeded here. The rooms are clean and well-maintained with everything you need. Some may find them a bit dated, but I found them comfortable and perfectly adequate.
I felt completely safe during my stay and met so many lovely people from all over the world — a great mix of ages, mostly 30+. This resort has such a warm, welcoming vibe.
I would definitely return to this hidden gem — it’s the perfect spot to relax, recharge, and enjoy authentic Cuban hospitality!

Iberostar Origin Laguna Azul: 2 star at best
I don’t think I can even describe in words how awful this hotel was and the experience we had. Upon arrival to the hotel we checked in and started heading to our room, to find our entire hallway leading to the room was completely flooded and the power was out. It was pitch black as it was around 9:30pm, so clearly walking through a flooded pitch black hallway was a safety hazard. We turn right around and went back to the desk to inform them of the hazard, because there’s no way they would’ve kno[... read more]wn about the flood and power being out, especially since there were no wet floor signs. When we informed them, they were completely aware, and were taking no precautions to rectify the hazard. What’s more, we asked to switch rooms as of course we didn’t want to drag all of our luggage through the flood and get ourselves and our belongings wet AND risk slipping and falling all the way down the hallway. To which the resorts staff said there were no more rooms available. This was insanely shocking as the resort was basically empty. For a resort with over 800 rooms, it was absolutely physically impossible for the resort to be full. There was no one there. No one at the bars. No one walking around. We literally saw a total of 10 people the whole time we were there. Not over 800 people. At this point, we’re already livid. Nothing is being done to accommodate us, nothing being done to protect us and provide us safety, the only thing they managed was to get SOME of the power on. Not even all of it, dark and flooded hallways were all over the place with no warning signs anywhere. So thinking it couldn’t get any worse, we went back to our room, went in, and couldn’t believe our eyes. KEEP IN MIND, this is supposed to be a 4.5 star resort. This room was the definition of disgusting and scary. The immediate feeling I had was “I need to go home right now, I can’t be here another second”. Every piece of furniture was torn and completely covered in disgusting, mysterious stains. The curtains were torn, stains on the pillows, surfaces covered in dirt and grime. The AC didn’t work. The sink was cracked, filthy and MOLDY. There were no bathroom amenities (which the TripCentral listing said there would be) besides one bar of soap - no shampoo or conditioner, and the bottles were broken and falling off the wall. There were HAIRBALLS. HAIRBALLS, plastered to the bathroom door and the floor. I literally cried. I couldn’t believe I had just spent a 2 thousand dollars on this atrocious terrifying horror movie-esque room and resort. FURTHERMORE, this room was listed as an UPGRADED ROOM in the TripCentral ad, as we booked the Star Relax room. Nothing about this room was even CLOSE to an upgrade. Another lie on the listing. We immediately started to try to contact Sunwing. No phone numbers worked so I submitted an online request for a king room to see how fast it would take for them to respond. We finally gave up and realized we would have to stay in that disgusting room for one night before we can get the heck out of Cuba. It was so sad to know that this was my first experience in Cuba, and it’s already being ruined. We decide to go get some food as we were starving after a full day of traveling. We ask reception where the 24 hour snack bar is, to which they said “No food until 11pm”. I couldn’t believe it. The TripCentral and SunWing ads both listed a 24 hour snack bar, which was ANOTHER complete lie. We specifically chose a resort with a 24 hour snack bar so we could have access at any time to food, and it didn’t even exist. It was one of our requirements while trying to choose a resort. We then sat in our room, starving, until 11pm. Finally the time came and we went to find the snack bar. They sent us down to the buffet, and it still makes me sick to my stomach the scent of the food they had. Just 2 trays of gloopy, sloppy, smelly pasta, and a bun with what appeared to be a variety of mystery slop meats, and a small amount of sushi. It smelt disgusting, was insanely appalling, just straight up gross. I know the food in Cuba is bad. I’m not completely unaware of the situation there. But to list yourself as a 4.5 star resort, and provide THAT, to your guests???? Absolutely unacceptable. We forced ourselves to go to bed in hopes of getting out of there as soon as we could in the morning. Next morning we went down to the sunwing rep, who was expecting us because of the online request I put in for a room change. After everything we experienced from the lack of any customer service (no option to switch rooms and no concern to clear or block off the flooded hallway which was an insane safety hazard), we immediately requested to get switched from Iberostar Laguna Azul to a different resort, any other resort but there. Tatiana was very helpful. We explained everything I just did above, and she said it was unacceptable and was very sorry for our experience thus far. She also confirmed that the hotel was NOT booked up, and they absolutely could have switched us to a different room. She asked for 2 hours for a gentleman named Andy to attempt to complete the resort switch. So we came back after 2 hours and were able to be transferred to Bella Vista. Out of this whole experience, it is factual that the TripCentral listing is a lie. We booked what you said would be an upgraded room, it wasn’t. You said the hotel had a 24 hour snack bar, it didn’t. You said it was a 4.5 star hotel, it was FAR from it. Everything was a lie, even the staff lying to us about having no rooms available. I can’t believe you can even list a hotel like that where the rooms are so so so dirty and uninhabitable, and MOLDY. Someone needs to go to these resorts, check the rooms and the food periodically, and ENSURE the listings you put up are accurate, and ensure the star rating they have is still accurate. I’m unbelievably disappointed in TripCentral, in SunWing (as their listing also lied although they helped us switch resorts so I am thankful for that), and the resort itself and its miserable unhelpful staff. From this experience, I would never recommend people go to that resort, or use TripCentral due to its lies, and will never recommend Cuba for vacation. Could not be more disappointed in a vacation that was supposed to be restful and relaxing, and ended up being a stressful, gross, and miserable experience. Only thing I’m happy about is being home.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Not a 5 star
Our room had to be changed twice. I had requested a king size bed, got 2 singles and the bathroom door had no handle to close.
Our towels were never changed and constantly requesting water for our room.
The second room was what we wanted in the first place. So why all the stress?
The grounds were quite beautiful and the food was good considering it’s Cuba.
There is no store to buy any sort of snacks.
The staff hardly spoke English and one male at the bar in the lobby didn’t even understan[... read more]d the word hot.
Like a hot coffee or hot water for tea.
Reception was amazing though. Very helpful and informative
If you want an older group of people, this is the place to go. No loud music. Just relaxing atmosphere.

This resort would be good choice for wintertime (January/feb) Service is good- a lot of workers and many of them do perfect job. Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Decent resort!
The lobby was great! Open, spacious, clean and elegant looking. The grounds were also pretty nice, the landscaping was awesome; nice planted coconut palm trees, grass and pools made the scenery very beautiful. The dining areas were also great, the Indian and Italian restaurants were a little small in size, but they only book a certain amount of people per night to ensure everyone gets a chance to experience it once for the week. As for the food in these restaurants, they are great; tasty and jus[... read more]t enough to fill you. The main buffet area, where you eat most days for breakfast, lunch and dinner is pretty big in size but the food gets pretty repetitive. You end up eating the most of the same things for all your meals. It’s not a problem if you don’t mind eating the same things, but the food is either too salty or not salty enough. Other than that, you can adapt to the taste. As for the hotel and the rooms, they need some work. The AC can be an issue in some rooms and I believe the toilet/tank system is an issue in most rooms. They tell you, as long as you’re not putting TP in the toilet(it goes in the garbage they put beside the toilet) your toilet will work fine. Other that tht, Grand Mutha Cayo Guillermo is pretty decent!

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Holguin: Clean and beautiful but lacking entertainment
Eight of us returned September 19th from a week of the Sanctuary Grand Memories in Hoguin. The hotel is beautiful. Staff were amazing. The rooms were lovely and came equipped with a safe, storage for your clothes, a balcony and very comfortable beds. The food is OK, but was really lacking in fruit and vegetables. The only fruit we saw for the week was papaya for about three days and bananas on one day. There are a few à la carte restaurants at this resort the Japanese was our favourite. The alco[... read more]hol was better than expected. The pink gin from Spain being my favourite for sure. If you have a flight, leaving later from the resort, the prestige plan allows you to check out at 3 PM which would’ve been a nice bonus. We did one excursion on a catamaran for a lobster dinner and sunset cruise for $65. This was a great trip. Others said they really enjoyed the Jeep trip but the snorkelling trip wasn’t great. There was very little entertainment in the evening. There were no theatre style shows. They did have a karaoke night and a dance competition night. I don’t even know if we met an entertainment staff member when we were there. The beach was beautiful and lots of beach chairs and shade available. The water was warm and clear other than when it was stormy. There are a few jellyfish and sea urchins in the rocky areas. We met some amazing people and made some fantastic memories.

Iberostar Selection Ensenachos: Not what we expected
This resort had great reviews, and we did a deep dive on youtube to see what we could expect. Unfortunately, we did not have a great time for our first stop in Cuba.
The pools needed to be cleaned. There was mold everywhere you stood and sat by the bar, the rooms were not sealed at the door so we had multiple salamander on our ceiling. The food was cold and there was no selection whatsoever. Flies were a huge problem, so you didn't want to trust anything that sat out. The staff were hit and miss[... read more]. Some were very pleasant to deal with and helpful, whereas others were rude, dismissive and ignorant. There was only one golf cart to tend to the entire resort, and when you have rainy days and people having to walk to the one place to eat at the buffet, you'd be standing there, waiting for a very long time in the rain to get anywhere.
The beaches were beautiful, however, it would have been nice if they raked the seaweed.
It wasn't an enjoyable trip.

Melia Varadero: Wonderful resort
Everything was great. Keeping in mind this is Cuba, we couldn’t have asked for more. Resort staff were all amazing, Gilberto was extremely helpful from the moment we arrived. Ended up being upgraded to a room on the Level because of maintenance issues in our original room. No complaints at all. Pool and beach are nice and close so you can switch from pool to ocean all day. Will be returning!

The translation and grammatical corrections are below:
"I am truly surprised with this hotel, especially the kindness of the staff and how well-maintained the 'Blu' side is. It's a good place to relax, and walking to the beach is great exercise. Memories Cayo Largo: Lovely resort.
I was at here at end of Sept with relatives. Had a great time. The beach was gorgeous and the water amazing. Not my first time in Cuba. This was my first time to Cayo Largo. No problems with the food. Not alot of fresh fruit or veggies. Had amazing omelets every morning. They did have an exceptional baker, we had fresh bread and desserts every day. Yummy. Loved the bungalows. Plenty of room and a well working a/c unit. Bathroom was dated but servicable. Got water every day. Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Ok resort
Grounds were lovely, people were very nice, pools were very dirty, buffet food was repetitive & cold, a la Cartes were good, but also cold. Rooms were nice, but buildings need some TLC. Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Great views
Will not return to this resort. If you are not a repeat guest you are not important. We arrived for a two week stay sept 30 - Oct 14 . in which we booked in May. Three other people joined us last minute and have been here before. When we arrived the three received their rooms at 10:30 am and we had to wait mine was 2:30 another 4:30 and the other 6:00 p.m. when we got our room keys they did not give us wifi password so had to return to lobby to get that. The rooms were great very clean but on s[... read more]econd and third floors in which we requested bottom floor due to mobility issues. Couldn’t be moved because they were full. This place has 500 rooms and had 308 guests. The pools were cloudy and slimy the lifeguards sat in their chairs on their phones for 8 hours a day. The swim up bar does not serve beer. The kids were all in this pool eating popcorn and having their pop or juice and their cups were left in the pool along with a lot of popcorn. The entertainment was a joke. They come to pool crank music on a speaker and leave. The beach is a walk and a further walk to the chairs. The beach bar is at the start of the beach and the chairs 5 min walk away. So if you want a drink it’s a walk. If you need a bathroom it is not at the beach. I am not a picky eater and this was terrible food was always cold and the Buffett never changed from noon to supper. They did have a roasted pig for thanksgiving. The workers were all great and friendly but there is no management going on there. These people need to be supervised so they actually do their jobs. The garden keepers and lawn people never stopped. And yes I know it’s Cuba I travel
There a lot. I bring my gifts and I become friends with a lot of the people. I will still travel to Cuba just not this resort.

Iberostar Origin Playa Alameda: Not bad place
So first off. The picture shown here does not exist. There is no island in the pool. That is a diff resort. Went from Oct 6 to 13. No one there. we were only people in building 13. The place is very pretty. The beach is divine and the pool great. Its not a ton of walking to get to places like lobby, restaurant or beach. But here are the negatives for me. The room was very disappointing. Very dated. No mini bar, no coffee maker, TV didnt work until reported 3 times, no water bottle in room for 3 [... read more]days, mo where to unpack clothes so lived in suitcase for a week. Was a nuisance to get dressed and walk to the bar to get coffee to bring back to room. The drinks are not good. The pop was always flat and no diet coke. Only had a few coctails but seemed like made with koolaide. They were awful. No maragritas. Fortunately I brought my own orange juice juice boxes and 6 pack diet coke. I wanted cold fizzy coke in my rum and coke and when bought a can was $4USD each. Sheets not changed all week which was OK. Always carry pack kleenex as none of the bathrooms had toilet paper except the room. The food was not good. Same every day. Bland spaghetti with tasteless tomatoe sauce. Some canned pea salads. Just basic bottom line stuff. Gave up on omelets for breakfast . Usually had no cheese. Only fillings were corn, vegetables of some sort, icky ham and white tasteless cheese. We stuck to fried eggs and toast. Had mashed potatoes which were good and lots sweet potatoe but found lots stuff reheated next day so was stale. So don't expect a nice buffet like in mexico or Dominican because its not happening. Could only get in to Caribbean restaurant on last night even tho place empty. Only 1 other couple there. Food was shredded beef with rice. Was ok. At least better than buffet but didnt seem Caribbean. Staff is lovely. I gave a way 2 suitcases of food and gifts so got great service. They prefer American to Cdn. dollars. Bring bug repellent. Bad mosquitos at night. Very little entertainmment. Some music outside lobby couple times. Lots music during day. No bar on beach or beach waiter service. You have to go up the walkway to a bar in that area. Theres a bar by the pool but as said the drinks not great. There were catamarans to go out on but not in service for like 4 days. We both got sick guts and lived on immodium and pepto bismal. On the whole the place looks great but I prefer a nicer room with amenities and good food and drinks so wont be returning. We met several people who were repeat customers who said they would not return as gone downhill. Quality. A friend recommended this place as shes been there 10 times but obviously she has not experienced higher quality resorts and went with 10 people so built in party. Depends what your looking for. Dont look for good food. Not happening. A bottle of water is $4USD. Also had trouble with a taxi driver. We wanted pizza cause so sick of food and told him where we wanted to go but he took us to a friends restaurant in middle nowhere and ended up costing us $25USD for small pizza with 1 topping. We have him heck and told him we asked him to take us to a diff place but he said this better. Cost us triple plus cab ride. So angry about that. Cab was ordered by front desk of hotel.Hotel is a long way from airport. About 45 minutes to an hour. Best part of this place is the beach. I wont be returning here tho. Rooms are musty altho have a/c.

Starfish Cuatro Palmas: Great place
This was a small resort but it was great. All the staff were very friendly.
Everyone knows that you don’t go to Cuba for the food but the buffet always had good stuff to eat and the bread and deserts were amazing. We tried the aroma restaurants and it was pretty tasty. And if you aren’t satisfied with the food on the resort just go out the front door and find a restaurant. We tried a few along the strip and didn’t have a bad meal.
