The hotel facilities and location was amazing, beautiful and clean. There was not enough reclining seats on the beach area to enjoy being on the beach. The staff of the hotel were not friendly or welcoming to us at all. They made no attempt to even acknowledge our presence when talking to us or even make eye contact with us. One really friendly and polite person was Felix De Jesus the bell boy who greeted us when we arrived. He was always pleasant and very helpful. The service in the dining area[... read more] was very bad. We would order drinks but they never came. Line ups for food were too long and staff seemed annoyed when you asked them for something.

Occidental Caribe: Outdated resort
Way too old and outdated. On the stairs the ramps are rusty and one part of it fell down.
In our room, the bathtub with the shower glass is not properly isolated so there was puddle on the floor after each shower. And absolutely no pressure in the shower and we got one day without hot water.
The curtains are so far from the window and there is no shutters so first sunlight you're up!
There was heavy rain one night and there was lots of water on the floor leaking from the walls.
The amenities[... read more] are good, the kids slides are so fun the pools are nice too and the Kid club is ok but outdated too especially the toys but Ana who runs it is sooooo sweettttt.
As per the food not too bad but lot of pork in most dishes. The waiters are very very slow and lot of people because only one buffet restaurant so line up all the time and food is going away really fast but not refilled fast enough..
There is another small beach restaurant but choices are very limited to junk food.
As per the two bars which serve coffee they only open at 10am and they are using a machine not coffee maker which is also very slow... Waiting time approximately 20min... horrible...
The shows in the evening are very nice.
Not the best resort I have been too especially for the price and the brand.
Last thing wifi is terrible wasn't able to work from here at all

Barcelo Maya Colonial: Basic basic basic – no frills
This was the first time to a Barcelo property and will probably not return.
This complex is often compared to the Iberostar but there are distinct differences.
The Iberostar is made up of 5 different categories of amenities. The Barcelo main 4 properties are all the same amenities, but diffenent vibes.
I will focus on the Colonial as that was the one we were at. 1st, we had multiple issues that needed attention but at no time were we compensated or even received an apology.
We arrive[... read more]d late in the evening. There was no welcome cocktail. Bad map and the buildings not well marked ended with us lost in the dark. Our travel mates had an issue with the safe when they arrived and front desk staff said they would send someone at 9 am. The next morning we headed to the buffet and as we were returning to the rooms, I commented how it was 8:40 and they would be in time for the security to fix the safe. However, no one arrived and for the next 2 hours, they called the front desk every 15 minutes to no avail. So by 11:30 they left the room to enjoy the beach. The next day, I approached the desk (as our travel mates were too upset) and after what I would describe as an “apathetic attitude” from Alexander, the supervisor, I was able to get him to call the security to meet me in the room. Which they did.
The next evening we had a huge downpour and our room was flooded (6343). So back to the front desk to speak with “Alexander” again (with the same attitude) and after they sent someone, we needed to change rooms, but we could not even move rooms until 3:00 pm. I wanted to be near our travel mates and suggested that they upgrade or compensate us for the inconvenience. NOPE. We were moved 4 blocks of rooms further away from the beach and travel mates, when we were promised we would be closer.
This resort is BASIC, no frills resort. There is little attention to details, like rooms missing remotes, no coffee, coffee pot broken, no creamer, no toilet paper. We only saw people serving drinks around the pool or beach 3 times. The bars and restaurants are understaffed. There is no entertainment team going around inviting you to partake in activities. The Colonial side is very quiet…I mean really quiet. The Tropical at least had some music playing. The Beach side was much more active with music and activities.
The food in the buffet was basic buffet food, some staff members would go out of their way, but most would not. There was a theme, but most items repeated. There is no coffee shop or Ice cream bar or any of the little extras we are used to.
As for the A La Carte, we had absolutely no problem booking 4 dinners at 6 pm. However, on the Colonial side…men need to wear long pants and closed toe shoes. They sent our 80 year old friend away with formal shorts and closed toe shoes. On the Tropical side, formal shorts are allowed and one of them is a “steak house” which we highly recommend as the Lamb and Beef Tenderloin was delicious.
The Management on the Colonial needs to take the stick out of their ***.
We ate at the Colonial side:
Kyoto (where they sent an 80 year old away). We ate from the menu not the teppanyaki, The food was ok. The Tempura vegetables were way over cooked. The meal was fine. The deserts were lacking.
Marenostrum - sea food – it was again, only ok. Two meals of salmon, mine included, was actually cold. Desert we had the apple pie, it was ok.
We ate at the Tropical side:
Capri – Italian – I am Italian so I did not order pasta, however, ordering steak was a mistake. It was tough.
Santa Fe – Steak house – The best meal we had. We all LOVED it. From the antipasto bar to the steak to the desert and outstanding service.
We were not offered any meals at the Beach or Caribe side, but it would have been nice.
The Mall is EXPENSIVE and only accepts Credit Cards, stick to the small markets, you can bargain with them.
The Go Carts – only accepts credit cards also, this is a “Hotel” policy that is extremely annoying.
The Beach was absolutely beautiful. The pools are nice but nothing fancy. The drinks are plentiful and if you ask, you can get “some” better brands of alcohol. I could not get the Beefeater Gin. Don’t ask for lemonade, you will get bottled water. WEIRD.
We got a good price on the trip and for that I am thankful as you get what you pay for. We only went here because we had already booked this hotel (beach side) through Air Transcrap and they cancelled our holiday one month before. We did not want to fly out of Toronto, so this was our only choice.

Occidental Papagayo: Amazing resort!
Super clean, the food was great except for The Grill, (the meat was way over cooked for everyone at the table).
Service was fantastic and friendly.
The room was clean and well cleaned on a daily basis but a litle on the old side with some broken tile. The bed and pillows super comfortable.
The excursions were all well organized and interesting however, a little bit on the expensive side and all in American Dollars. We are Canadian.
The resort outside was incredibly beautiful and [... read more]lush. The monkeys and other wildlife were really great to see. The pools were also fantastic with great service. My husband and I like to keep fit so the walking up and down and through the resort was a good thing for us.
We are planning on going back this year hopefully around the same time.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace: Beautiful resort
If you are looking for a resort to bring young children, this is the place. We went 10 of us four were young children 8,7,4 & 3 and specifically chose Barcelo because we had been to the one in Mexico twice and loved it. The grounds are beautiful but did not like the buffet layout, two side by side which caused chaos trying to get your food. Speaking of buffet, did not care for the food at the buffet, the a la carte which you get 4 per week were much better and less hectic. This holiday was a fam[... read more]ily trip, our two sons and their children and did not disappoint, the young kids enjoyed the water park, Barcy club, numerous pools and of course the ocean.

Occidental Papagayo: Three star hotel
Just returned from a10 day trip to occidental papagayo ……. I give it 3 out of 5 stars …….. the good …… beautiful property , food was average to good …. the pools were good …… the shuttles were very available …… the staff , for the most part were very helpful and accommodating …… the room was sufficient ……
The not so good ….. no atms , or money changing at the hotel , so you have to cab it to a nearby town ( approx $50 return ) if you need cash …… you can only book one ala cart restaurant for [... read more]every three days of your stay …… the whole resort could use better lighting on the pathways …… the regular bar doesn’t have a good selection ….. the premium bar upstairs is better , for approx 25usd a day more , yet I wouldn’t call it premium liquor , outside the Johnny walker black ……
Would I come back to this resort ? …. I would , if the price were right ….. apparently , other resorts in the same bay are much better , at a much heavier price tag …… you do need to keep an eye on the wildlife ….. unfortunately , I saw people feeding the raccoons , which renders them unafraid …… I actually had a couple in my room one night , after forgetting to lock my patio door ….. somewhat of an adventure chasing them around the room naked , but I managed , everything intact lol ….. the one thing I found unnerving , was one afternoon at the smaller swimup bar pool ….. on a weekend , there were a group of younger locals , that pounding down shots , until one guy puked all over the deck around the washroom area , while another had trouble getting out of the pool , to the point where he needed assistance ….. they really should have been cut off , but weren’t …..
To conclude , if you want a reasonably priced vacation in Costa Rica , this may be your place …… oh , and great fishing , camping got 4 dorado , and an albacore tuna ….. delicious ! …..as the hotel cooked them up for us …… an older crowd , of really awesome people ! ….. cheers !

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Beautiful resort!!!
The hotel is huge, beautiful and clean.
Since we were able to go to the other three resorts, there are lots of walking to do and to visit.
The public areas were nice and clean.
Rooms were average but clean. No issues with the AC. They should put more shelving inside the big dresser, that holds the TV, to get more storage for the clothes. My only issue was with the access cards to get in the room, they stopped working after a day. Twice we got locked outside our room and needed to go to [... read more]the front desk to get the access cards re-magnetised. We finally got one access card to work but the second card worked for only half a day. We gave up on trying to get both to work and managed to use only one access card for the rest of our trip. Apparently they went with a new company for the access cards and they easily get demagnetised. They told me to keep them away from electronics aka cellular phone?! Weird but it did not work since one card stopped working and we kept it away from our electronics.
The buffet style restaurant was nice and clean. Lots of food and good variety. The a la carte restaurants were good and the food was great. You might have to walk quite a distance to get to them because they are spread through out the four resorts. You should book them first thing after you are done unpacking and have your room number.
The food at the restaurant at the beach was good. The lineup for the burgers were interfering with the lineup to get other food which was annoying and frustrating at times.
The beach is beautiful but very small grain of sand. You will get sand blasted when it is very windy. Lots of palm trees for shade. Enough lounge chairs for everyone. If you want a good location on the beach, you will need to go place your towels on the lounge chairs before 8am. Strongly recommend to wear water shoes when going in the ocean because there are too many big rocks on the ocean floor and very spread out. The water is murky and you don't see them.
The swimming pool are large and enough lounge chairs for everyone.
We went swimming with the dolphins, it was awesome and it is located on the resort so didn't need any kind of transportation to get there.
The drinks were good but I wish they had a menu to tell us what they were offering. The beer must have been watered down because it didn't have an effect on me after drinking so much of it.
I will definitely go back in the future. Probably try the adult only resort located at the same place.

Occidental Nuevo Vallarta: Very Good Resort
Firstly, This was my wife and my selfs 29th time to PV and have been to about 15 different all inclusives there, as well as about 10 other carribean destination all inclusives. We were there 2 weeks ,Dec 6 to 20th. Not a very busy time in my opinion ( just before the xmas rush) Things were just starting to get busier when we left.
Great Resort if your not a terribly picky person! Buffets were very good ( as good as a buffet can be at an all inclusive ). . Rooms all getting a little rough around[... read more] the edges. Very disappointed in the fact that most rooms dont have balconies and that the rooms are a little small, but on the plus side it forced us to get up and get out of the room early and enjoy the day more. Also allowed us to get a lounger by being out early(7-8am) if it wasnt for that your wandering around aimlessly looking for a place to sit down. I complained to the concierge and she said it has always been a problem!! I told her that there is two very simple solutions...
1. GET MORE CHAIRS! There is plenty of room on the pool deck and beach to place more chairs. I cant imagine the situation in high season!
2. - enforce their own rules for not saving the chairs for so long. I saw no staff ever take a towel off a chair even after chairs sitting all day ( 8hrs) with no one using them and other people with no place to sit.
The buffet in the morning was a little slow getting a server to bring you coffee or water but not a huge deal. Coffee station in the lobby was a huge plus for us!
Those were my only complaints. Everything else was great! Great service. The bartenders are very friendly and quick to get you a drink. At every bar!
Servers are very attentive , especially being there 2 weeks, they would bring us our "usual " without even asking. Canned beer everywhere and not draft was a huge bonus , and surprise , for me. Doesnt matter how good the draft is when its served in those detergent smelling plastic cups.
Also bottled water was always available every where. My wife only drinks champagne and red wine and both were very pleasing to her and she is kind of fussy!
But the highlight of our stay was the Italian A la carte restaurant. Amazing meals!!!! Our server Juan was probably the best waiter we have ever had at any restaurant in our lives!! We were fortunate enough to get in 3 times and each meal was better than the last. Cant say enough good things.
I would definitely recommend this resort.

Barcelo Maya Tropical: Something for everyone!
This resort was amazing! We travelled as a couple with my in-laws, and would definitely return again with our baby. There is something for everyone! You have access to 3 of the 5 resorts if you stay with at the Tropical or Colonial. These two are basically twins and you share some of the same amenities. We had no reason to explore the other resorts but the stretch of beach allowed for nice long walks. If you enjoy the water, make sure to bring water shoes as it is quite rocky in most areas. Ther[... read more]e are some access points where soft sand is available. There is an amazing water park for kids right by the main pools, as well as a larger one at an additional cost. There is a casino, bowling, a mall, rock climbing and so much more available to you. If you enjoy getting a workout in the gym was amazing and also included towel service. Food was great! Lots of options and good quality. The evening shows weren’t to our tastes, but the auditoriums were always packed. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and plan to return again! The only bad experience was the transportation back to the airport. We were packed into a tiny van & made to sit at the very back where there was no windows or airflow. I’m not claustrophobic by any means, but this is not an experience I ever hope to experience again.

Barcelo Maya Colonial: The Barcelo Maya is perfect.
The place is massive, with that comes an endless number of possibilities for dining, activities and beaches, you know you are in the right place when divers come to your resort to dive the reef just off shore.
Amazing resort, staff were so kind, food was good, overall resort (pools ,bars, beach) fantastic! You also have access to the other 3 or 4 resorts in the compound which was great! There is a maya mall, casino, activities even a Mexican market all within the resort which was amazing. Also did the caves and tulum ruins excursion that was phenomenal. I highly recommend this resort, I would revisit 110%.
