Starfish Varadero: Good time
My daughters and I found that it was a great place to get away from our everyday life, free our minds and relax. The pool area was well kept and at times very peaceful, having two distingue pool areas was great. We loved the beach area and activities such as volleyball, dancing etc… being offered for our enjoyment. The night entertainment was also great, we loved the dancing; and the entertainment staff, made you feel welcome and were quick to include you in the fun. The disco could have been [... read more]better; the music seemed to be the same night after night. I would suggest a mix of music genre to get more people out and dancing. The rooms were clean, in need of some repair, but, we loved it just the same. The cleaning staff, were very pleasant and accommodating. The food, was good by me, my daughters thought that there was not enough choice, I was just glad I didn't have to make it, so a hit as far as I am concerned. I serving staff, once again, were very pleasant, responsive and accommodating. Overall experience was very good.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Worst place ever
The place is so old and rundown. There is mold in the rooms and it smells really musty. The air conditioning works part of the time and the pool was shut down more than it was opened. There was algae growing it. The food was horrible and once I saw people serving themselves with their hand at the buffet, I was done. You have to buy bottled water as there is no filtration system in the resort and no WiFi. The Cuban dollar was the same pric as an American dollar $1.37).

Starfish Varadero: Club Amigos: You get what you pay for
Myself and some friends were able to get this hotel for a week through $650 all inclusive, so we didnt expect anything fancy for that type of deal. Here are some things I think are worth mentioning
1. The resort itself: Sort of run down looking, A.C was not working in places like the bar and buffet making a lot of these places intolerable for a Canadian in mid-August. Our rooms were meh, didnt expect much but would have been nice if the safe was included. Our view of the water from our condo wa[... read more]s amazing.
2. The Staff: Mostly very friendly. Although they dont hesitate to beg for clothes and tips. As much as I didnt mind giving some of the staff my unwanted belongings because I knew they would need it more than I, a couple days in I felt bad because I literally could not give away anymore things. A friend I was travelling with spoke Spanish, and we came quick to realizing you get treated better for knowing the language. For instance, my non-Spanish speaking friend asked for a cheese sandwich because he cant eat meat. The server working at the snack bar said this was not doable and that he could only get one with ham. Our Spanish speaking friend asked moments later and got exactly what my English speaking friend wanted. This was definitely offputting considering you expect the same service regardless. Besides this instance the staff were very nice and socialable.
3. The food: Once again I wasnt expecting anything fancy. The food was okay, I didnt starve on the trip and thats all that really matters. Options for vegetarians are slim, most Cubans love their meat and dont care if your vegetables come in contact with it. But if you arent restricted to vegetables and fruits you should be fine
4. The beach: Most amazing beach ive ever swam in. Water is very calm from the morning till later afternoon. The water is clear and not too salty. If you go in the summer you will find many times that you will be one of the only people on the beach.

Starfish Varadero: quite awful if you don't speak Spanish
They were entirely unwilling to help us with absolutely anything until our friend we went with spoke Spanish to them. They didn't assist us in anything. Everything closed at 3-4 pm even though the site said they close at 5. A lot of the things that said we're offered were not, though that i sunwings fault, not club amigo. The staff were too busy hitting on all the pretty Spanish ladies. They didn't bother to acknowledge us at all. If the buffet is not open, good luck getting any food. For a midn[... read more]ight snack they made ham.and cheese sandwiches, as a vegetarian that isn't acceptable so I asked for a cheese sandwich and they said that wasn't possible to make. But again, when my spanish-speaking friend went to ask they were more than happy to assist her and make her some vegetarian option. You get what you paid for but the fact that the staff were so unable to help us because we spoke English was ridiculous. Had we not been there with a friend who spoke Spanish, we would've gotten nothing we wanted. It's pathetic. We all pay the same amount to be there but no one would assist us in anything. Try another hotel where people may care more.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Fun times
Had a great time at this hotel. Loved the beach and the people. Only advice is to upgrade to a villa room. Still very afordable , the hotel rooms are completely claustrophobic. I also wish I spent more time outside of the resort, so take a trip to Holguin and make friends with the locals.
Also go snorkeling! Gorgeous coral reefs within swimming distance . Talk to the life guards they'll hook you up.
Enjoy amigos !

Starfish Varadero: Good and bad
Our room was great, we had a bungalow that was a two second walk to the pool. Staff were friendly and helpful. our only issue was the food, I travel to Cuba multipe times a year so I know what to expect. My family struggled to find things they enjoyed. Perhaps it would of been different it the Buffett had better air conditioning as well as air flow.

Starfish Varadero: Less than my expectations
This was my 26th trip to Cuba. 2nd time in Varadero. I am used to 3-3.5 star hotels so i think i had reasonable expectations. The food was lack lustre. I will eat anything and I LOVE cuban food. But I was sick of having the exact same meal for lunch and dinner for a week. Breakfast was fine. And i dont each much so im good with fruit, juice and some sweets, no complaints about breakfast. There was no a/c in the dining room. The average temp during my week was near 40c with the humidex so eating [... read more]in an uncomfortable environment was almost nauseating. The pool was almost 100f and filled with Cubans who never left the pool to use the washroom facilities so I avoided it att all cost. The beach was beautiful and the water calm and about 88f, perfect. And we generally had no one else around us. Had the beach to ourselves from 8am till 9:30 everyday. Not one vendor on the beach either. Pleasant surprise! Activities staff were friendly but dont do much. We are used to playing games all afternoon but there was nothing to do. It was far too hot anyway but still, im used to more to do. I was fairly bored most of the time. And with the amount of Cubans in the hotel, activities seemed more geared towards appeasing them so my limited spanish was not enough to keep me in the loop of what was going on. The nightly shows were "ok". One show (michael jackson tribute)was awesome but that was it. The disco was too hot to stay in for more than 20-30 minutes. Overall i liked being in the bungalow for its close proximity to the beach and pool. But its way too long a walk to the dining room or to get a coffee. Not sure why the property is so large. There seems to be a lot of unused but developed real estate on the property that just makes for long hot walks to get anywhere. Not enough shade on the walk ways. If it had rained at any point, you would be drenched trying to get anywhere. Overall not impressed with this hotel. Other than friendly staff and a clean room. Had read that ants/cockroaches were an issue so came prepared. Brought a can of Raid and eradicated both on the first night and never saw anymore after that.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Meh
Parts of the hotel are pleasant. The boardwalk is nice for strolls, the beach is nice and well maintained, although the proximity to the bar could be better. In my opinion the resort is far too spread out and therefore disorganized. This was my 7th time to Cuba, my first to this hotel. The room was musty, the wall and window leaked, the cleanliness was sub-standard - this was the dirtiest room I have ever encountered in Cuba, although I go for the beach not the room. I read reviews before going,[... read more] and although I am usually pleasantly surprised the poor reviews here are unfortunately quite accurate. I personally think you can find much better hotels in the Holguin area or other parts of Cuba for not a whole lot more. I will not be returning to this hotel, however you can still relax, have a lot of fun here and meet awesome people.

Hotel Caracol: Average
The resort was ok. The grounds and property well kept. The food lacking but ok. VERY limited selection probably due to the resort being at less than a quarter capacity. Hola sun rep was awful. Seemed miserable all the time and avoided clients and found it an inconvenience to answer any questions you may have. The beach was nice but water very weedy. The entertainment staff was awesome.

Club Amigo Atlantico Guardalavaca: Pretty vacation resort
I arrived at Club Amigo Guardalavaca at 10 pm on TMR package vacation from Montreal on 22 April 2015. About 40 guests disembarked the bus and three of the guests had not been input into the computer despite us having the hotel voucher as proof. After everyone else had been processed, it was after 11 pm when the Reception staff, 3 ladies and one man turned their attention to our dilemma. I was the last person to be served and got my room just before midnight. I was very weary, overly hot and when[... read more] I went to find my room 2099, I realized I only had my carry-on in hand. I immediately returned to Reception where I remembered leaving my black purse on the counter where Mara checked me in. I spotted my purse sitting on top of my suitcase across from Reception. The area was empty except for the four Reception clerks and a bellman who was leaning on the counter chatting with Mara. The other two ladies wore glasses and Victor was sitting at a computer by a telephone.
I was relieved to see my purse and suitcase under their watchful eyes. I can banked the staff and went to my room. Reaching my room, I opened my purse to ensure that all was intact. I removed my wallet which contained my Passport, return flight ticket and currency. I came to Cuba with $180 Canadian dollars and some Canadian change. At the Holguin airport, I exchanged $100 CAD receiving $78 CUCs. My wallet has several compartments so I had a separate zippered spot for each currency and my coins. Everything was where I put it at the airport EXCEPT the four $20 dollar Canadian bills I kept in reserve if I needed to convert them later. I searched throughout my purse and wallet to no avail and concluded the Canadian bills had been removed by someone else when the purse was left at Reception. The following morning, I reported the situation to the TMR rep, Lorena. I accepted 50% of the blame for forgetting my purse at the Reception counter but very disappointed that money had been stolen. Lorena made a report in her book, apologized and agreed with me that we could not prove who stole the $80 and that was the end of the matter.
The week at Club Amigo Guardalavaca was very enjoyable despite the rough start. The grounds are beautifully kept; the ocean and beach are stunning. Weekends are crazy on the beach as the hotel allows the public to sit under the shade palappas while the paying guests are left without shade. Many bus loads of people from Holguin flock to the beach for the weekends and leave their picnic garbage and empty rum bottles laying in the sand. There are no security guards on the beach to control people. Monday thru Friday, it is mainly tourists on the beach and they are more respectful of the environment than the Cuban citizens, sadly.
The Bungalow section was closed leaving the Villas and Tropical section in full operation. The buffet was reduced from three to one operating which was very congested and full but enough food was available throughout the mealtimes. I could not make even one a la carte reservation because guests before me had been allowed to book up the entire week on our first day. There was only one a la carte out of three operating due to the low season.
I had to change my room on day two because the air conditioner in 2099 did not work and my first night was very hot. I got the run around from Reception about changing until Maintenance confirmed to them there was no air con. The hat took till after lunch on day two. The ladies at Reception ignored me standing and waiting to be served until finally one lady told me to go see the man and pointed to Victor, who was the only staff interested in looking after me. Throughout all, I remained patient and calm but inwardly very annoyed at the extremely poor Customer Service when staff are presented with a problem. Victor, however came through and after speaking to Mail tenance, he gave me room 1073 which was pleasant, cold and comfortable for the duration of my stay at a he hotel.
The nightly entertainment was very good. One evening, it was synchronizes swimming in the pool and other evenings, it was beautifully spcostumed dancers and Latin music. The disco was popular after the show until 2 am and many young people made their way there to dance.
I would return to Club Amigo because the price was the best deal over the other resorts in the area and it is a very nice resort. The theft was partially my fault for leaving my purse at Reception despite only staff being in the lobby at the time I got my key to find my room and was away for 20 minutes.
Be watchful of your things, have low expectations for good customer service at Reception and you will otherwise have an enjoyable vacation due to the guests you meet and spend your time with. I did have a nice week because of four friendly ladies from Montreal who were also traveling solo.
