Between myself & my sister and my Husband and I, I've had the wonderful opportunity to visit Melia Las Americas 15 times. I have just arrived home and am already planning for next year.
We have spoken to friends about it for years and a couple who we know, the husband was our best man, will be there for two weeks in March. I hope that they see the magic of the place that we do.

Brisas Sierra Mar: GREAT TIME !!!
The hotel is dated but very relaxing. Great showers, clean towels every day, good variety of food at buffet, great beach nd good snorkling. Second time there and will be returning again because of the weather. Nice guests from all different places. Staff friendly and great music. Sunwing reps need to be more informative at info sessions concerning things-ex: can you drink the water? , excursions, money exchange. etc. Will be returning next year !!!

Valentin Perla Blanca: Loved it
This was my first experience with Cuba and I'd definitely go back to the Valentin Perla Blanca. The food wasn't bad, you see a lot of the same things at the buffet, but they all taste fine. I really enjoyed the food we recieved while on excursions at restaurants. Great entertainment nightly, and our room was clean and exactly as described online. The grounds and the beach were perfect. Couldn't have asked for more out of our experience.

Blau Varadero: Wonderful resort!
This hotel has a lot to offer; first and foremost, the beach is amazing--I ran along the beach and this hotel's share of the beach was the best. Second, there are a lot of bars that could serve you daily, and one 24 hour bar which is near the beach.

Playa Cayo Santa Maria: Playa Cayo Santa Maria Jan 27-Feb 3
We are a family of 5 and travel yearly to various destinations. In the 25+ years of travelling I have never taken the time to provide a review except to close friends and family. The reason for this review is because I think people considering a trip to Cayo Santa Maria, would benefit from an honest review. We have been to various places in Cuba about 5-6 times but most recently to Cayo Santa Maria 3 times in the last 2 years. We highly recommend this destination. The beautiful white sand [... read more]beach is breathtaking and worth every penny and the 2 hour drive from the airport.
We have all heard that Cuba is not known for its food but for its beaches..this is true to some extent. January 2019, my family (and my brothers family) stayed at Melia Las Dunas. It was great. The service, the variety of food and the options of different lunch areas and of course the beautiful beach. To be honest, the rooms were a little outdated but how much time so you really spend in your room?? We loved our trip so much that my brother and his family returned in June with his inlaws and nephews. they had a great experience.
This year we decided to go back to Cayo Santa Maria but to my brothers request (he wanted to try a different resort) we choose the next hotel over -Playa Cayo. The reviews were good and the rating was positive. We had 24 people in our group. We arrived at 9:30 pm with Air Canada and arrived at the hotel at 11:30. Even though we were basically the only guests arriving at that time, checking in took forever. Only 2 people at the front desk to register 24 people into 8 rooms. We have small children, elderly people and we were hungry and tired and just wanted to settle in...but no one is in any hurry to get things going. As a group you'd think they would have put us all in the same block or at least close by to each other..nope! We were scattered and unfortunately the elders in our group (total of 6 people) were put in the block furthest to the central area of the resort . It was too late to make any changes and no one wants to move the next day when you have already settled in? Everyone stayed in their assigned rooms. The only thing open to get some food at that time is the snack bar. The selection of food was limited and not appetizing. The burgers looked like they were processed meat covered in a thick batter. No fries just a teaspoon of what they call salad. the pizza was made with a dough that was a thick pita bread and the cheese used is what I know now to be the extact cheese used at every buffet at lunch and dinner. they use cut up hotdogs for pepperoni. This was not a good start . We are not picky eaters and just thought tomorrow would be better.
Well it was. The buffet at breakfast was typical except no bacon, no hashbrowns to brown bread no jam or peanut butter and the coffee was absolute garbage. Cuba typically has awesome coffee so we were perplexed to be given this dark water. My review of this place will never end if I continue so in a nutshell here is what our next 6 days consisted of.
The food is circulated for lunch and dinner. There is no difference EVER from one day to the next. Same food items all day.
The coffee in the dining room is awful. Its good at the coffee bar but the line up crazy.
There are a few lunch option areas although they to repeat.
They are not towel crazy and are quite liberal with beach towels.
The palapas in this area of the beach are limited therefore you need to get there by 7:30 to secure chairs and palapas. There are always guys on the beach willing to get the chairs for a fee.
The beach buffet has the most god awful feces smell. We think their sewage system is not maintained. You can actually see the water seep thorough the ground in this area.
The wait for a pizza at the beach buffet is 45 mins-only 1 person working and he does not hustle.
The hotdogs on the beach grill are great but the wait is also long with only 1 panini press and 1 person working it.
The service at this lacking, especially in the food areas. There were limited people working and they really don't go above any beyond to get you drinks or clear the tables-this was disappointing.
Our big concern was the alcohol being served at the beach bar. 5 of us drinking the same vodka/soda, rum and cokes and mojitos all got major headaches the first night. we noticed that the alcohol being poured into our bubbas was from 2 different bottles at the same time. Hard to explain but witnessed by a number of us. I think they use some of the "real" stuff to make it look legit but top it with "crap" or tainted stuff..this we cannot prove but coincidence that we all felt the effects and we are all social drinkers.
The animation team was great. Had the guest participating on the beach and pool all the time. The night shows were a little disappointing and boring.
Rooms were very nice. AC worked great, Great showers and nice set up.
Never in our past travels did we have anything taken from our rooms. Unfortunately, this time 3 of our families had something taken from our rooms. A bracelet, face cream and a container with dish soap (to wash out our beach bubbas).
We were told that the simple things like dish soap, laundry detergent are limited on the island and locals fight over these things at supermarkets when they do become available.
These items taken were not essential and important to us and did not merit a complaint just so that someone would loose their job but we were diffidently disappointed and afraid that other things would go missing. The trust was lost.
Will I return to Cuba? Yes. but not for a while. Will I return to Playa Cayo? Unfortunately not.

Club Tropical: Amazing Beach!
I'd steer clear of this hotel, if you can. The bathrooms were always broken, 1 stall out of 2 in each of the public bathrooms was nailed shut. We were put into a single room for the first 2 nights which was very small, dirty and the windows and door hinges were broken and the door knob was missing. The safe was even seized in an open position so it was not functional. I think starting out in this room put us in a bad mood because we got in at midnight and we were tired.
We weren't fond of the f[... read more]ood at this resort, looking at photos of other resorts in the area the food looked like some effort was put in. There was very little here and the same dishes were at every meal and dishes that were seemingly created out of mixing other dishes together. Lots of flies in the morning and the fruit was never ripe. We had bananas only 1 day which was a nice treat, but we ate off resort quite a bit. The fruit juice wasn't real, it was basically sugar water.
The snack bar consists of only 1 item which was usually a hamburger. Where are the chips!?
Our second room (the double room that we actually booked) was so much nicer than the single room 'apartment' we were put into at first. This seems to be typical of them to put new arrivals in there.
If you do go here, visit Julio in the bar and Emerio the bellhop. Some of the staff here were so great but others barely cracked a smile the entire time we saw them.
Weather was great, water was beautiful, beech is amazing and it was entertaining to watch one of the lifeguards make out with a guest and then eventually go off somewhere.

Punta Peninsula Varadero: Needs Maintenance
Room:
We booked kids-free, but the booking was not in a kids free space or building.
The TV, phone, and safe were all broken in the room we were put in. We were moved on the last day to Fiesta Club - the safe was also broken in that room.
The linens had a mildew smell that is likely due to the humidity, so not sure if that's common or not.
Food/drink:
Only 2 a la carte restaurants were open. All others were closed. The buffet was open, but all hot food was commonly luke warm or col[... read more]d. Bring salt with you as the food is bland, and salt is often not on the table or available.
Bars were lobby, beach, and one swim-up bar. They run out of cups often so bring a reusable container with you.
Service:
The cleaning staff in our room were LOVELY. They made us towel animals and left a note the day we were leaving saying goodbye.
Water was never replaced in our room the entire trip, including when we were moved to a room in fiesta club on our last night.
One evening we asked the front desk for water in the evening, the individual asked our room number and then walked away to help another individual. After a few minutes, we asked about the water, and he walked back and handed it to us. Having to ask twice for things is not ideal.
Every day we asked to have the safe fixed. Each day the customer service individual would say someone would come and it would be fixed before 5:30pm. It never was. We never were notified in anyway and each day they had no knowledge of the day before.
The toilet in the room we were in made a deep and loud vibrating sound every 2-5 minutes, making it difficult to sleep. We flagged a hotel staff down to help (phones broken) and they were able to snake the pipes so that it only made it on flushing.
Hotel:
The beaches are the most beautiful I've ever seen in my life. The sand is like velvet and the Caribbean is warm and beautiful.
The pool has broken tiles that are quite sharp. This is covering a very large area and occurring in multiple places.
The lobby has a SEVERE mosquito infestation that may be caused by a nearby tiny lake. Bring VERY strong repellent..
The bathrooms smell of urine and very rarely have soap, toilet paper, or paper towel. Bring tissues and hand-sanitizer to ensure you're prepared.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria: Great First Experience
This was my first ever all inclusive vacation. At first, I wasn't too keen on Cuba, but now I would 1000% go back. I had an amazing time at this resort.
I originally chose Sanctuary because it was an Adults only, with the option to "stay at one, play at 3". We really enjoyed it. It was secluded to the back of the resort, with only 6 Bungalows. It was quiet, but would get loud and fun in the afternoons at the pool. The entertainment staff always kept us going during the day Poolside with pool go[... read more]lf, dancing, morning stretching with Lissy. They were fabulous.
The tram drivers were always friendly. You will come to know the chicken man Rene. His tram was always a party! William made sure our stay was going well,
Our butler, Rudy, was the best. He always made sure we had a reservation for dinner. Everyone staying at the resort were always friendly. The beach was BEAUTIFUL, clear teal waters, white sand. Just beware of sand fleas if staying all day at the beach.
My partner and I are picky eaters and we found enough food to keep us going. We didn't starve. The italian restaurant was the best, but we didn't get to try the Emporium (international).
We had no problems with our room, We had 5920, which was right at the entrance stairs and it was fairly quiet. The A/C worked great. Our housekeeper, Janey, always did an amazing job on our room!
We did the Remedios city tour and Jeep Safari. The jeep safari was our favourite excursion. We paid extra to have our own jeep and it was worth it.
We will definitely return!!

We have been to Cuba 11 times. As usual the weather and the people were very welcoming. The rooms are clean and bright.
One thing we did notice was that a lot of choices of food were in short supply and not as many choices in the buffet. We do realize that there is a new director general but didn't know that the head chef has also changed. The food was so so but we never went hungry.

Valentin Perla Blanca: Amazing for the overall price
We arrived January 25, spent 10 days at this resort. On a late night flight from Montreal.
It was our first time at a Valentin resort .
The bus ride was approximately 1.5 hours with one stop on the way at another resort.
We were able to purchase a couple of beers in the parking lot of the airport / or on the bus which made it very pleasant.
The tour guide was friendly.
My only complaint was that all commentary was in French.
It seems that it is assumed you are Francophone if you come f[... read more]rom Quebec.
Check in at the resort was quick.
Unfortunately, we did not get the room we requested when we made the booking. We had specifically asked for an upper floor and a king size bed with the agent when booking the flight. The receptionist at the desk said they had no note of our request.
The next two days were very unpleasant. Not only because of the Separate beds and location of the room on the bottom floor. Also because the room had not been prepared for guests. The smell of mildew and moisture was so strong it was intolerable. I literally slept with a piece of my clothing over my face.
We went back to the desk the morning after our arrival and were told there were no other rooms available for two days.
This definitely put a damper on our stay .
However, on the third day they did move us from building 26 to 33. We finally got a king size bed on the 2nd floor.
Building 33 also happened to be on the quieter side of the resort and close the best part of the beach.
The beach itself was great at one end because it was much wider and quieter.
There was little to no seaweed or rocks on that end of the beach .
I would recommend asking for any of the buildings in the 30’s .
The service people were very pleasant and accommodating throughout the resort .
The food was as expected, tolerable. If you go to Cuba with low expectations regarding food then you will be ok.
However, the beach barbecue sandwiches were great .
If you are picky about food then you can find something to eat. Fresh fish, omelettes, salads, chicken.. Fruits were only papaya and pineapple.
I searched for a banana but never saw one .
I was told however the markets are full of a variety
Of fruits .
It was difficult at times to exchange $ as there was only one person to do this at one counter . The line ups were pretty long at times .
The currency was peso used specifically for the resort .,
We were there during the Super Bowl . The staff of course had not heard of this . However, we created our own party with some fellow Canadians in the “sports bar†!
The drinks and alcohol was plentiful!
The general manager of the resort was there daily and very accessible.
Overall, for the price point it was worth the 1225$ for ten days that we spent .
We spent 200usd ( Cuban peso is 1/1 usd) in tips and souvenirs.
The grounds were well maintained and pretty.
I recommend bringing bug spray as the noseeums are pretty bad at times.
Departure was well organized and for a small fee late departure is available 11 pesos per hour.

Valentin Perla Blanca: Bad Resort with a beautiful sea
Yes Cuba is poor and we keep coming back for the beautiful sea but unfortunately the resort got match worse since last year, no food NO FRUITS how can a tropical country have no fruits?! they run out of plastic cups everywhere! we had to keep our cups for the whole day, i was even offered by 1 of the bartender to make me a cup from a plastic bottle. we had to keep our blue towels for the pool for 7 days! they would run out of fresh towels by 9am and wouldn't restock. our bathroom was always dirt[... read more]y and smelled like mould, i had to call the cleaning lady and beg her to clean the bathroom properly and made sure she saw that i was leaving her tips!
public bathrooms NEVER had soap.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Very Disappointed
Very disappointed with this resort. Food was not all that great, some workers there were rude, and housekeeping wasn’t very helpful and thorough. On a positive note, the tennis instructor Alex, pool bartender Randy, and a short blonde haired female bartender in the sports bar, can’t recall her name, were so awesome. These three workers were phenomenal and a lot of fun. They made us feel comfortable and very welcome. I would rate this a 3 star resort.

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Absolutely Loved this resort-
Our first time away, just us two, since our honeymoon 25 years ago, and it was spectacular!
Clean comfortable Air conditioned rooms. We had nothing but friendly resort staff - always smiling and helpful -from the Chamber maids, shuttle drivers, front desk staff , waiters, bartenders, and grounds keepers ! These hard working folks made a point of getting to know you during the short 7 days and always made you feel as if they had known you forever!
My one piece of constructive criticism wa[... read more]s that our Sunwing representative was not as informative , nor friendly- he usually was scowling and didn't not communicate well - our questions when we tried to approach him 1:1 were met with silence, and then a few words, but certainly not friendly. As our orientation meeting was not until the next day, a hand out on arrival ( which was after 5 pm for us) with basic map, and info on where to find food, and from what time to what time, bank hours , and where, and even as simple as how to reach front lobby by phone ( which would have been helpful when we were at the farthest bungalow from the Lobby) . We managed tho and mainly it was due to very Friendly , helpful staff.
