The beach was amazing, the private pool was nice. Room were clean and maintained, comfortable beds
Staff were all very friendly and helpful if you needed anything. There is a food shortage and supplies are low, but it did not have an effect on the trip. No fault of the resort either
Lots of mixed drinks and they were made very well
About 1 hour from the airport, the beaches make it worth it

Vila Gale Cayo Paredon: Modern resort
Need more personnel in the main lobby bar, same at coffee station in the lobby . Food was decent knowing in what situation complete Cuba is. Very happy with beach, swimming pools, gim is very nice and well equipped.
Beach chair guys are annoying, somehow you feel obligated to have them to help you and to tip them.
In general staff is friendly and helpful.

Melia Jardines del Rey: 8/10
The grounds were neat and tidy. The staff were for the most part were absolutely great. They were short towels and toilet paper so suggest taking your own to be safe. The food was good for the most part. Always had chicken, pasta and pork. There is a lot of walking involved to get from point a to b. There were 24/7 places to eat. The pizza place made the best chicken wings. There were very few shortages of food during our 14 day stay. The entertainment was great. If going there they really need[... read more] medicine, first aid supplies, soap, toothpaste, band aids. The pools and ocean were fabulous. The ocean in some areas had a lot of rocks so water shoes would be a great idea. If you walk down the beach a bit it is fine. We found star fish, needle point fish, little white fish etc all near the shore.

Hotel Playa Coco: Hotel plays coco
The resort was very clean. Very good beach. Great maid service. The food was typical Cuban
Only a couple shows were good. Staff are friendly. I suggest using the grilling stations when dining. Take US $1 bills for tipping or consider purchasing Canadian coins from the staff. Overall a great stay.

Melia Costa Rey: Awesome resort
The hotel is ok but certainly in need of a lot of repairs, the staff was always very kind to everyone they are your best asset, the food is very difficult to deal with if you are not used to it, it is very repetitive, every meal was the same thing, certain items for breakfast, lunch, and diner always repeated, I understand that you do your best with what you have so we deal with this as best we can, all this said I would not hesitate to return to your resort, I am hopeful that things will be muc[... read more]h improved next March as we are hoping to bring our entire family, have a good day

Iberostar Origin Daiquiri: Love it here!
Congratulations Iberstar Daiqui on your 25th Anniversary! We stayed from March 9th to the 16th and loved every minute.
No problem from the Aéroport, to the bus, to the resort and through check in. Lovely welcome with a refreshing drink at the lobby and safety room for our luggage until our room was ready.
Looks like there was a refresh in the lobby furniture and the buildings had been painted. Full complement of staff and it was so nice to be recognized by familiar faces.
As repeat custom[... read more]ers we were given some special treatment and it was appreciated: thank you Iberostar, great idea.
Food and drink were plentiful...LOL...no shortage of white wine here! There was a problem with flies in the main dining room last year but not this year. Beaches were immaculate, grounds were lush and in full bloom and our room was always clean and well supplied (thank you Ladies of the Varodaro building).
Seems like all excursions were up and running; entertainment both in the lobby and at the entertainment building were in full swing and games and activities at the beach and pool were going strong. Great fun!
We have always recommended the Daiqui to our fellow Canadians and our stay this year has just re-enforced our support.
Thanx to all the staff for a wonderful week in the sun! Hope to see you next year.

Grand Aston Cayo Paredon Beach Resort: Grand Aston- a balanced review
Our family has been to Cuba many times. We are a family of 4, 2 older teens. We were at the Iberostar Selection in Varadero last year (great), but decided to come back to Cayo Coco and try this new hotel. I feel that when we booked it, the hotel was at a reduced capacity. As our trip drew closer, the reviews started to go downhill and were consistently very negative. We know that some people will complain about small things, but it seemed worse than that. We attempted to switch resorts bef[... read more]orehand but could not do so as it was too close to the trip, and we had not purchased any insurance. So, we set off with an open mind and hoped that the reviews were overstating things. There are elements of that being the case, but unfortunately many of the negative comments are accurate. I would not return here until the resort addresses some of the more major concerns. I will try to provide a fair and balanced review here either for experienced travellers to Cuba, or newbies.
Flight - 2.5 hour delay due to weather over Florida. No one to blame, but it did kick things off on a negative note. Then Air Transat left one of our suitcases in Toronto, but it arrived the following morning - not a huge deal. I was not given the $50 daily spend credit however, as it did not pass the required 24 hour period. Again, not a deal breaker - I borrowed some of my 17 year old son's clothes!
Check in - we arrived at 1am, and had to wait approximately 20 minutes in line. Otherwise it went smoothly.
Room - we had upgraded to an ocean view, and were in building 7 - nice view, clean and modern room. Worth the upgrade for the view, and being in a quieter location, especially given the evening entertainment which would go on until 1030-11. Strong a/c. However, no top sheets until we requested these, and then not until day 3. They also have this strange approach of putting the top sheet on top of the duvet...They provide you with one long uni-pillow, which some people might not like. Lukewarm water 2 of the 7 days, at peak time before dinner - hot at all other times. Only bottled water was replenished and that didn't start until day 3. 2 beers in fridge upon arrival. Towels not changed unless you leave them on the bed. I don't think the linens were replaced at any point.
Beach - amazing. This is why we come to Cuba, in addition to the friendly people. Warm water with sandy bottom, at low tide these sand bars emerge further out from shore, and are nice to walk along. The main beach downside - people are up as of 5am reserving chairs. We went down at 8am before breakfast and lucked out with chairs under palapas most days, but missed out on day 5. So day 6 and 7 we went at 630-7am and had more selection. The hotel is not discouraging this practice. We did not sit by the pool but I assume it was the same there. People clear out by mid afternoon so you can move around. Beach bar had lineups at times. The churros line was ridiculous and very slow - like 1 hour minimum. The closest bathroom is at the snack bar by the beach which is a bit of a hike, but you get some steps in. You can walk for long distances in either direction on the beach and it feels completely safe.
Restaurants - here's where things really go downhill. The buffet is simply way too small for the number of guests. There is heavy traffic, narrow and congested lanes, long lines for toaster, grill, egg or pasta stations, etc. The food options were repetitive, even in one sitting - e.g. multiple bowls of cabbage or shredded pumpkin, no other veggies at times. Things were there some days and not others - cucumbers, tomatoes. The grill stations only had pork or fish, I saw chicken on one day only, and beef 2 days. No fresh eggs as others have commented. Very limited options overall - and this is not coming from a family of foodies. Unfortunately another negative aspect was some of the guests - butting in line, using hands to grab bread, pouncing on new trays of food and filling their plates with a huge amount of a scarce commodity like pancakes (only seen on 2 days). Many people were respectful and polite, but there was an undercurrent of fend for yourself. Cuba is known for bland and "meh" food relative to other destinations, but this was on a different level. Friends were at the Pullman the same week, and had many items that we did not (eggs, bacon, hash browns, more meat options, more veggies, more fruit). We clearly survived but gravitated to bread, rice, pasta, veggies, and ice cream. Watermelon, pineapple, guava and papaya were plentiful. It's the first time we brought things like peanut butter, salt and pepper, and other snack foods. Also - bring spoons! They could not provide those most meals. There was not enough staff to clear plates or offer drinks the majority of the time. The coffee was lukewarm in the morning - we defaulted to the lobby bar.
A la cartes - we booked them the morning after we arrived. Having read about the lineups, we arrived at 930am for a 10am opening, and were 3rd in line. The only options we were given were on nights 5 and 6, and only 2 restaurants had availability for an 815pm time. At the time of booking, we were told we could go to 3 a la cartes, but the resort insisted only 2 were permitted. The Brazilian one was OK - the soup was very good, and it was the first time we had beef or chicken. The Asian one was not as good. I can't comment on the others.
Bars - lobby bar frequently quite busy. Best coffee in the resort. No juices anywhere (with the exception of mango some days), only sugary punch. No gin, and I only saw tequila on the last day. Plenty of rum, vodka, beer, wine. All bar staff were friendly and tried their best to be creative with drinks. Same issue with some people cutting in line, but people were generally respectful. They had a couple of servers roaming the lobby in the evenings, and taking drink orders. They often ran out of glassware and resorted to plastic cups in the lobby bar.
The comments about the pizza lineups are bang on - I waited 1.5 hours on day 2, and said no more. The pizza was good, but not that good. They need a system where you get a number and can come back, versus standing on concrete in the sun for ages. They also need another pizza oven, or to create a more efficient system. They should also put per person limits - you get close to the front and then someone asks for 8 pizzas ahead of you, or a friend joins them and places another order. People in line were generally friendly. The sandwiches at the other snack bar were quicker. Apparently there were crepes at one of the pool bar grills, but we did not try those.
The grounds are beautiful, the resort is very clean, bathrooms were all well cleaned. Shortages of toilet paper in many of the women's bathrooms however. No paper towel - they were using toilet paper in the paper towel dispensers.
Overall, the resort feels understaffed, and not able to accommodate the number of guests who were there. The shortages are noticeable, and the lineups really detract from a relaxing week away. The same friends at the Pullman had inquired about switching to our resort to spend part of the week with us, and were told emphatically by their travel rep to avoid the Grand Aston, for the reasons I have outlined. The hotel needs to reduce the number of bookings, and/or hire more staff and expand the buffet. There was an entire American grill next to the main pool with a large covered seating area which was not even in operation, and looked as if it had never been used.
If you are considering this resort, I would look elsewhere until this situation improves. I don't say this lightly, as we tend to find positives in most places we stay. But unfortunately, we were all looking forward to coming home this time - and not the nostalgic or bittersweet feeling you normally get at the end of a trip. I would not book here again at this point.

Melia Jardines del Rey: 3 Stars
The main lobby is beautiful, but it’s just an illusion. Having been to Cayo Coco 3 times, we knew what to expect. The positives: amazing beach with sandbars and shells, you can walk along all the resort shores. We met many fun guests from Canada. The cappuccino’s were fabulous…when they had coffee and milk. The sad parts: line ups for food, food quality was hit or miss, we had to buy water for our rooms each day, towels were not exchanged for the week and they start to smell because of the humid[... read more]ity. Staff are constantly asking you to exchange Canadian money for US at par, as well as exchanging any Canadian coins. Staff were not as friendly as previous visits. Many nights showed alcohol shortages. So, if you are going for the beach only, this is your resort. I’d recommend packing some protein bars and extras to keep you going for the week. We will not return.

Melia Jardines del Rey: Great resort, wonderful people.
The resort was great. It could use some maintenance and upkeep in several places, but the beach, the people and the food made for that. The nightly entertainment was also great, and it had a little bit of everything for everyone. We dined at the Oriental and Italian restaurants and found the food and service there both very good. There's a 24 hour snack bar where you can get sandwiches, and a pizza restaurant where they are made to order. Proximity to the airport was also great...a quick 15 to 2[... read more]0 minute drive.
We really enjoyed our stay .Our room was amazing & well kept during our stay. The food was plentiful & fresh. Staff was very friendly & courteous. The beach was beautiful & relaxing. We also spent time at the pool which was also relaxing. We really enjoyed the quite, relaxing atmosphere of this adult only resort. The lobby was nice place to sit and have a drink, thank you Daniel. Oh and lots of cold beer too. cheers

Iberostar Origin Playa Pilar: Ok
The hotel itself is nice and clean however the grounds are not so much. There was broken glass on one of the pathways off to the side and it never got cleaned up, there were cups and utensils all over the resort, the pathways the beaches etc that were there for a few days. There was next to no entertainment. A couple of days at the pool didn’t even have music playing. Obviously problems with staffing and last night we were there there was obvious drama with the entertainment staff on stage. [... read more]The manager herself ran off and didn’t stay for the last dance with everyone and the same for one other dancer. Overall it was ok the worst thing I can comment on is the rude staff. I have never gone somewhere where the staff were Soo rude and unhelpful. In the dining hall we got ignored every single night, we had to get up and approach someone to get water. Service was terrible.

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Great vacation!
My husband and I were at this resort during the Ontario March Break. We had a great time. We were treated very well, the staff was friendly and very helpful. Our room was clean and well stocked. The beach was raked daily. The pool areas were well maintained. The shows were very good. The buffet and restaurants were clean. They did run out of a few things and that’s to be expected with Cuba’s situation. But that didn’t prevent us from having a very good time.

Iberostar Coral Esmeralda: Lovely
This was a lovely adults only resort. The quiet pools were quiet, except when certain guests decided to crank their own music! We had to ask them to turn it off. Would have preferred if staff would have done this. The housekeepers were amazing, the bar staff was good, although I never had a pina colada made the same way twice! (Each was good, though). I always asked for no alcohol, but twice was given it.
Beach was beautiful. There is a sign that says “no reserving chairs” but everyone did. On[... read more]ce I saw a couple reserve their chairs, but didn’t tip and then the chair guy gave their chairs to someone else. Also, same chair guy said he didn’t have $5 change for a $10 bill when I had just seen him take $5 from someone. All other chair guys were honest.
Food was subpar, but we expected that with the food shortages. Didn’t know from day to day what they would or wouldn’t have! Take your own condiments and snacks!! We were there for the beach and adults only quiet pools, so the lack of a variety of food didn’t really bother us.
Gardeners were out all day, everyday, so the grounds were lovely. They always stopped to give ladies flowers and bananas if they had picked any that day.
Not sure if “lifeguards” were actually trained, but they would gladly find an umbrella or chair for you at the pools.
A la carte restaurants: The food is the same basically as the buffet, except they were made fresh instead of being in a warming tray. We didn’t get a chance for the “Asian” so not sure what would have been served.
Staff were overjoyed with donations of dolls and toys.
Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay!

I have spent a great week in Tryp Cayo Coco. It is a beatutiful place. It is an older resort, but very clean and the staff is amazing! The food was great, different, but lots of choices for everyone. The dolphinario is about half an hour bus ride from there and I strongly recommend it. Every night different type of entertainment was provided which was fun!

Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo: Amazing resort
The vacation was enjoyable, the hotel is beautiful, and the seaside is wonderful, but there is a major lack of services, such as the service at the bar, which is very slow, and the workers lack experience in dealing with customers and lack a smile. Also, the room services are not cleaned well, and also the problem of sanitation in the bathrooms is also weak, and at peak times the bathroom water is weak.
