Sanctuary Cayo Largo: Hidden Gem
Beautiful oasis of wooden cabins connected by suspended bridges, adjacent to a great pool, resto and bar AND a sister resort you have absolute access to! If you are like me, an all-inclusive can get boring after 3-4 due to repetition...well this place has much to offer in order to keep the diversity alive and you can also visit the other resorts a short distance away. Direct access to a beach in calmer waters, yet some chairs on rocks available when seas are rougher. Some might find the bus+boat[... read more] rides annoying to get to the pristine beaches (Sinera and Paradisio) but I personally found it intertaining...spicing up the trip with some adventure! Beautiful Ranchon to have lunch and a-la-carte dinner in with fabulous ocean view. Food is decent everywhere and sometimes great (try the fish at the Ranchon for lunch)...no complaints when you know what's up with the Cuba situation. Cabins are great. Comfy king size bed and pillows, AC worked absolutely fine, big double head showers which means no fighting over the water when you take it with your partner. Staff is amazing. Real troopers wearing their hearts big and bold. If you can, bring them stuff. It's the most rewarding thing to see their faces light up when they receive things they have no means to purchase themselves with their meager wages...Outstanding performers at night giving their everything in order to entertain you

Iberostar Coral Holguin: Really Nice Resort
The Coral Level at this hotel was great. Beautiful rooms with a soaker tub and separate shower stall. The pool is right at your door. There is butler service so if you need anything they will help. Daily towel swaps for the pool towels and turn down service. The wait staff are around you all day asking if you would like a drink. They bring it to you poolside which is wonderful. The down side of cuba is they run out of food items on the menu so you are eating a lot of the same things which[... read more]ever restaurant you go to. Every night we were booked into a different restaurant they were out of 2-3 thing always. Appetizers, mains and desserts were always “not availableâ€. It didn’t matter where you went. There is no extra service or special restaurant privileges because you are coral level. The main difference is you have your own smaller buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch and an afternoon snack menu at the outdoor bar. Otherwise the other restaurants are shared by everyone at the resort. The beach area is also small if you are a beach person. I loved staying at the pool because there you get lounge chairs and a cabana for your use daily.

Memories Cayo Largo: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Good - beautiful white sand beach that goes on for miles with no other resorts west of this resort. Also most of the staff at the resort was friendly and helpful and the hotel is only a 5 minute drive from the airport.
The Bad - the beautiful beach was completely washed away after 4 days into the stay when the extremely strong winds started and stayed on for the next 3 days. The food was average with hardly any fresh fruits and vegetables and buffet food is usually cold with no warming tr[... read more]ays. Also the whole island seems to be infested with small black flies even with a plane flying around spaying a few times during the stay. If you are looking for water sports, nothing is available at the resort, you have to travel to Sirena beach (hotel shuttle available for 5 CUC or 2 hour walk on the beach if you are up to it) for any water sports.
The Ugly - the initial room that they gave me had no hot water, multiple areas with water damage and then a major fresh water leak happening in the bathroom. The upside is that they did give another room which was better, but the resort is dated and needs some TLC.

Melia Las Dunas: 5/10 Melias Dunas
I was in this resort about 10 years ago, and I was very happy, but this time I was very disappointed. The worst part was the poor hygiene in the restaurants and the bedroom.
The staff are wonderful, the beautiful gardens the beach and pool the paradisiacal.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Great Resort
For Cuba this is cream of the crop. The rooms are upgraded and spotless. The food was the best ive had out of the 3 times ive been to Cuba. The drinks were amazing. Pools are stunning and clean. The beach sucks. If youre look to spend lots of time in the sand and ocean this isnt the resort for you.

Sirenis Tropical Varadero: A Wonderful stay Labranda Hotel!
My family had a good stay at the Labranda Hotel! The pool quite big and clean. The beach can be a little bit crowded but there is a big stretch of the beach where you can try to find a spot that you want. The food at the buffet is good. The special dining areas are quite a disappointment though because of the long wait and the food is not that special. The staff are generally friendly specially at the dining hall.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: January 3-10, 2020 sejour
This is the second time in less than a year we are staying for a week at Royalton Hicacos in Varadero because it is a great resort.
I have to say that the rooms are a bit outdated they are very clean with good quality mattress and bedding, mini bar, coffee, etc. The room maid did an excellent job every day (building 2500) and Davis the butler was very nice and helpful. Actually all the people are very friendly and helpful trying to make your stay a nice experience. Very good quality drinks, e[... read more]xcellent entertainment, and the food at al a carte, and snack bars was pretty good. the grounds are in excellent well kept condition.
I also have to say few less positive things that were not so good compared with our last visit in May 2019:
1) the breakfast and lunch at the buffet was very repetitive compared with May 2019 when every day used to have a different theme (like Canadian, Italian, Asia, etc.) The same food choices every day, cooked, cold cuts, etc.
2) the hot water in building 2500 between 5-7 pm was lukewarm every day. Did not experienced this before.
3) at the initial check in not much info provided especially about evening programs and shows, where to make al a carte restaurant reservation (the system is changing now), etc. When we went later at the front desk to ask what show was on that evening the personnel was not sure, and they were asking each other.
Minor things, not a deal breaker. We would definitely like to return.
I forgot to mention that the beach is very nice! Thank you Royalton!

Playa Luxury Cayo Las Brujas: Paradise on Earth
My new husband and I spent our honeymoon at this resort from January 3rd to the 10th, 2020. We were both pleasantly surprised from the moment we stepped into the lobby. Check in was quick and efficient and our room which was on the top floor of the main building was INCREDIBLE. Clean, spacious with a separate sitting area, full bathroom with a soaker tub, double sinks and a rain fall shower. Super clean with a breathtaking view of the ocean. Every morning it amazed me to open my eyes and lo[... read more]ok out to see the crystal clear water of the ocean right from our king size bed. The grounds of the resort are very well maintained with lots of vegetation. The gardeners do a phenomenal job keeping the plants healthy and trimmed. One of the gardeners cut a fresh coconut for me to enjoy a refreshing drink. The beaches (there are 3 in total) are well groomed with beautiful powder soft sand and great snorkeling right off the beach about 30 feet from the shoreline. The water is a spectacular aqua colour and every time I would go in for a swim, my body felt as though it was healing and rejuvenating, with each wave I felt my stress being washed away. There is also a bar and a grill right on the main beach so you don't have to go far to enjoy a cold beverage or to nibble on some grilled shrimp with fresh made banana chips. Food at this resort is great and I don't understand how some people give bad reviews. Obviously, the food will have a different taste than what most Canadians are used to; The reason for this is very simple, Cuban food is real, not contaminated with hormones and pesticides. Chef Ricardo does a fabulous job making sure that the food coming out of his kitchen is of the highest quality. Not once did I nor my husband get sick on the food or the water and ice. If you don't make a gluttonous fool of yourself you should be fine.
Now, as beautiful as a resort, beach and grounds may be, I believe that it's the staff that make it special. It's very difficult for me to find the right words to describe the staff at Angsana; each and every individual that we had the pleasure of meeting was incredible. They all went out of their way to make our stay special; From Neydis in customer service, Nalli with her always smiling face, Pocurull making unique and great beverages to Chef Ricardo, the garden staff, the housekeeping staff and many others that I don't have their names, all working hard to make every guest feel welcome. Always ready to assist you with any request. We arrived at this hotel as guests but left feeling like family. We will most certainly be back to this resort very soon.
Katherine & Nick
PS. If you do find your way to this resort, make sure to get the couples rum massage. It's an unforgettable experience.
I gave 4 stars for location because it is quite a long trek from the airport (1.5h)

Hotel Villa Cuba: Not disappointed
I did not have any expectations when we booked this hotel, it was New years and we booked on price. It was clean and staff helpful and friendly. There was always something to eat and my husband and I enjoyed the 2 a la carte restaurants. There is a local bus that runs downtown from the hotel for a few dollars - that was convenient. Would I stay here again- only if the price was right. I know Be Live has recently taken over this hotel so maybe improvements are in the works. We took a day trip in[... read more]to Havana ( booked thru Sunwing on the plane) they delivered what they promised, however I wish we had more free time so keep that in mind when you are book a day trip. The guide kept us moving for the whole day and there is very little time to go off by yourself. I do love CUBA- the beach is wonderful, it's safe, people are friendly.

Playa Pesquero: One of the Best Holguin has to offer
There is a reason this resort has such a high guest return rate, and once on site we saw why.
The buildings the grounds and all amenities are well kept. The beach was clean, had ample chairs and shaded areas, hobbie cats and paddle boats to book and take out, along with snorkeling masks. Drink service on the beach, a tiki bar and pizza place beside the bigger snack bar (the food available down there was great). Service was friendly and sincere.
The pool areas offered something for everyone, a [... read more]quieter side to relax, as well as a more upbeat section with an in pool bar. Foam party to the side, along with a separate pool for water volleyball and activities.
South of the pool area was a strip with shops and restaurants, beer garden (24hr) and ice cream bar.
Directly north of the pool area is the buffet and lobby.
Well laid out resort, with a little something for everyone.
Buildings 28, 29 and 30 were great location for minimal walking to everything, the food and service at the 24 hr snack bar also located just of the southern pool area was nice. Good selection of food and prompt polite service.
Really enjoyed the a la cartes, Romantic was our favorite by far, the lobster was some of the best I have had in Cuba, and the house red wines varied but were a decent drink with meals.
Clean, upscale and pleasant.
We look forward to adding ourselves to the growing list of return guests at this beautiful resort!

Paradisus Varadero: The new area of the resort is nice.
We were disappointed in the service at the resort, saying that we have to point out some of the positive areas ... the concierge were absolutely wonderful, they were helpful in every way. ( thanks to Lilly and Hanset). The bar in the family reception (new area) was also very good, the two bartenders went above and beyond for our family, both adults and children. The beach is lovely, could of been cleaner but we enjoyed the water. The two shows that our family attended were first class entertainm[... read more]ent. Now as for the service in other areas .... we were given a room in the older part of the resort with a partial view of the ocean and the kids were in the family area. We requested to be moved closer to the kids rooms, it took two days for them to move us (something we didn’t understand because the resort was really not busy) but they did finally move us in the same building as the kids on a flour with no hallway lights which was a little scary in the dark, we did ask them a number of times to get a light in the hallway but it went to deaf ears. The room was nice but we didn’t have towels or fridge supplies or drinking water for the first day we were in the room after calling a number of times we borrowed towels from the kids room and went down to the bar to get drinking water. Now the food !!!! We were prepared for the food not being the best but this food was awe full. The a la carte restaurants were also terrible, they never had their complete menu .... and it was the same food that was at the buffet just presented differently. The waiters spoke very little English and seemed confused serving a table of nine (we never could get our food at the same time). The concierge would book our restaurants and three times we got to the restaurant and it was closed and it was moved to another restaurant. (Frustrating with a group of nine). We would only give the Japanese restaurant an ok recommendation the others no.

Grounds and beach were the only great thing about this resort that deserves reviews. Lacking in service, food was ice cold, no paper in any restrooms and hotel itself was not clean anywhere. Melia Marina Varadero: Much less than good
There are some pluses and minuses for this resort.
1) check in great!
2) room was dated but ok. Rusty plumbing fixtures but functional
3) food, worst we have ever experienced. Same meal every day for 7 days, cold or lukewarm at best. Horrible fruit selection, you name it, it was bad. I know Cuba doesn't have a reputation for good food but this was ridiculous. We have been to Cuba before and this resort wins for worst food ever.
4) staff was minimal, uninterested and aloof.
We can not [... read more]recommend this to anyone looking for a 5 star experience. At most a 3 star.

Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: Mid-range, at best
Grounds were well laid out, and common areas were lovely. Rooms were ok, but bathroom, namely toilet, was terrible ( afraid to use toilet seat-not good!). Gave the impression that cleanup after hurricane was rushed? Public toilets were horrific. Buffet was way too small for the number of seats in dining room, and having staff to slice deli meat, cheese and fruit to order was a pointless waste of time- more staff for omelettes, pancakes, ala carte meat/fish etc would have made more sense. Tabl[... read more]es were slow to be reset, and cutlery cleanliness was suspect. The beach, however was gorgeous and wide, with plenty of chairs
