Hotel was lovely lots of steps but we loved it. Beach was small but private and we enjoyed the quietness.
Food was fine some food could have been hotter. Perfect views of the ocean and you can watch the whales breach whilst sipping a cocktail.

Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo: Great Resort, beautiful beach!
I think for the price, this resort was well worth it. All basic amenities were included. The food was great, lots of variety. The rooms were a good size, outdated but functional. The actual resort was very well kept, constantly clean and had plenty of space and activities. The staff were absolutely amazing. They made the experience at the resort phenomenal. The beach was absolutely gorgeous. A beautiful spot to relax and also enjoy a bit of night life in nature.

Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo: Beautiful resort!
Hotel was beautiful. Food was delicious and well presented. Service was poor to fair. We were never offered tea or coffee in the morning and when we did ask, we sometimes did not get it until the end of our meal. Some servers did not understand when we wanted tea instead of coffee. We ended up serving ourselves at the tea and coffee bar so that we had some with our meal. Our small group tipped at every meal even if the service was bad as we were sure that tips are a source of income for p[... read more]eople. We noticed that we were almost the only people that tipped. Was this because the service was bad, or that people were cheap? Not sure. Even though we were constant tippers it did not make a difference in our service. No consistency on who waited on you even though we sat at the same table every time. We ate out at the beach restaurant for lunch everyday. Not once were we offered drinks. When we did order them after stopping a waiter, they only came a couple of times.
Beach was fabulous. Great for snorkeling and just hanging out. Did have to go out by 7:30 in order to snag beach chairs. Activities on the beach were good fun. Didn't try a dance class.
Our room was in need of a few repairs. Just minor stuff, however, our shower did leak all over the floor. It was always well made up when we returned in the afternoon.
Drinks were very good and well appreciated. Bar service very slow.
Lobby was beautiful. We spent our last day in the pouring rain and it was nice to see people using the lobby for games
We didn't spend much time in the pool as there was no shade. It was a beautiful pool .
Grounds were lovely and we enjoyed the cats lying around. We had our favorites.
For Air Transat who we booked our trip with, we asked for 3 rooms close together and were in 3 totally separate buildings 2 which were far apart. We booked in October and this request was not filled.
People need to know that doing all the computer work that needs to be done by the customer will take a lot of time. We attempted to do our entry into DR on my laptop, it would not take my birthday, so we started over on my husband's phone. His phone would not accept my birthday. So we started over on an i pad. Finally we were in. Then there was booking our seats and booking our ticket. We do not own a printer, so we had to go somewhere else to do all this. It took us 3 hours and a lot of frustration. What exactly are travel agents doing these days? It is not a fun way to start a vacation. When we were leaving, we tried to book our seats for our return flight, got all the way to the end and it would not accept our phone number. We tried all 3 of our phone numbers and none of them worked. So we gave up and waited until we got to the airport. We learned that you have to put a 1 in front of the phone number. How were we to know that?
Our biggest shock was being finger printed at customs in DR. Kind of disturbing.
Overall, a lovely resort although there was no where to really walk too. We took a taxi into town that was set up by the hotel. Driver spoke no English so was unable to explain anything to us. When we arrived at the "tourist" drop off, a man met us on the sidewalk and explained that the taxi driver worked for him. This lead us to suspect that this man took a good part of the money we paid, the hotel probably got a cut for their advertisement of the taxi service and the taxi driver got what was left over. Had we known all this we would have got to town in another way.

Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica: Fantastic resort
The hotel and grounds are kept very clean. Rooms are a good size, we had a king size bed and lounge area. Noise was minimal. No sound from adjoining rooms . Sometimes we could here a door closing in the corridor.
The food was great. The Chef cooked fresh fish and meats at the buffet which were delicious. The buffet food was not always hot but really, it's a buffet! Lots of choices. We had freshly cooked salmon, swordfish and steak for lunch most days. You just need to wait 10 minutes while it c[... read more]ooks - well worth the wait.
My kids worked out at the gym every morning. No problem getting time on the equipment.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica: Typical all inclusive
Many wonderful things but a few minor problems. First the front desk was friendly and efficient. The cleaning staff were everywhere and had power equipment necessary to do the best job. The maid service was friendly and efficient. Our only complaint was they sometimes showed up early morning, and at other times mid afternoon. The food was generally pretty good. the small crescent beach was excellent for children. The water was shallow enough for children and there were no large waves as t[... read more]he area was reef protected. The hotel suffered from the problem that occurs at almost every resort which is people leaving towels on lounges and not returning for hours. A few problems with restaurants. The Italian restaurant listed two soups but only had only one. The menu listed seven pizzas but when I ordered one I was told that they were not available. The restaurant had no cappuccino or espresso but the bar near the lobby served same. They are must haves for Italian. One of the two buffets had a sign on the door saying "open at 6:30" but when we went there with a six year old granddaughter we were told it didn't open until 7.

Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro: Wonderful resort
Everything was great, service was good, food was above average, property was very well maintained, although the resort was a bit busy, it was sometimes difficult to find a good spot at the pool. The beach was well kept, drinks were unlimited,
Great food, rooms were wonderful, housekeeping staff were great. Pools were very nice and clean (other than swim up bar pool - gross) lots of activities to do and activity staff were great. Only complaint would be the lounge staff - very unattentive. Lounge bartenders were fantastic

Bahia Principe Escape Sian Ka'an: Great Resort Overall
Do you homework on reviews beforehand and you will not be disappointed. The grounds, amenities, and rooms here are excellent. There is no beach access directly on the resort but there are trolley's that come by every 10-15 minutes that take you across the highway to the non-adult Bahia Properties which are coastal. Older demographic of guests, very quiet for the most part. Pools are pretty small but you can always find a chair at one of them. Non-smoking unless in designated areas which was a bo[... read more]nus. Lots of a la carte choices if you want to venture to one of the resorts across the highway, only 2 on site. Can always get something to eat between the buffet and poolside snack bar. Food was above average IMO. Service was excellent no matter what property you are on. Great spot for pure relaxation and quiet, if you are looking to party or for good nightlife you should look elsewhere.

Bahia Principe Escape Sian Ka'an: Favorite Resort
This was 3rd stay at Sian Kaan. Did not disappoint. Excellent experience from checkin to check out. The proximity to PGA Riviera Maya (a Robert Trent Jones designed gol course) is the highlight for me. Playing golf at sunrise leaves the rest of the day to enjoy the resort. Appreciate the service at the pool, lobby bar and restaurants. Enjoyable selections of food. There is lot of construction in the area with the new train. So not as peaceful as it was the last time. A visit during hi[... read more]gh season meant the resort was busier but will always be my preferred place for winter escape for golf and sub from the winter.
Husband and I go every year for vacation to the same resort because we love it here! Beautifullly maintained landscaping, excellent food and drinks with many options for everyone, clean and spacious rooms! Only issue this year was that it was an extremely busy week and people were leaving towels on chairs at the pool and the beach for many hours and not using them while some couldn’t find a chair.

Bahia Principe Explore Akumal: Good resort but very large/spread out
First of all, here is what we prefer in a resort.
We are beach babies, so a nice beach, adequate loungers and beach view is a must. As well as swimming in the ocean. Swimming, not wading (will get to that, LOL). Swim up room, and everything within a comfortable distance of our room. Lots of sun and friendly service. Otherwise, we are pretty adaptive...
On to the review!
Resort Staff:
Overall did not find them overly engaging/enthusiastic HOWEVER for the first time in my extensive travels,[... read more] noted that 2/3 of the guests were not tipping service, were cold towards the staff so I cannot blame them for not putting forth best effort. We managed to get to know a few of them and once we engaged/tipped they were wonderful. Hard to do that with the expanse of the resort and rotating staff...
I tip well in the room, the cleaning staff were excellent and complied with my note that I left requesting fridge be stocked with certain items daily.
Room:
We booked a swim up room (our preference), and due to a leak in the pool fell short of advertised expectations.
The water level was below the skimmers when we arrived, and continued to drop for about 3 days. Which turned it into a very loud waterfall as the return jets were above water. Not the tranquil pool advertised/expected. Management were well aware and did not add water to the pool (witnessed manger/maintenance/someone else inspecting it and taking pictures. Water level stopped dropping just under the night time accent lights/vacuum opening, attempted to explain to maintenance that was where the leak was, fell on deaf ears... Other swim ups looked fine, avoid building 63 for now...
Resort layout:
BIG complex, expect a lot of walking and lots of rides on the shuttle "trains".
Add ons:
Lots of add on charges. First time ever we had to pay to attend shows. Having said that, what we paid for was very very good!
Kids:
They have an extremely good good kids club, many activities we observed, they kept the kids engaged from early day until late evening.
Daytime in the lobby/pool areas until up till 9 PM they had the kids doing stuff like decorating heart shaped cookies on valentine's day (for mom and dad?) to dance shows at 8 pm. Our grand kids would have loved that (kids on a resort don't bother us unless they are totally obnoxious). We Very entertaining to watch in the mid evening. That was great to see, and I am sure they dropped into bed extremely exhausted to the joy of the parents... LOL!
Beach/ocean:
We were able to secure loungers in decent areas of the main beach every day. Beach area was very good, white sand (a little course but it was not uncomfortable) and lots of Palapas.
NEGATIVE for us, water in the ocean was at best waist deep out to the breakwater, we like to swim!
Positive: We bring our snorkel gear with us and around the end of the breakwater there was lots of colorful fish!
Grounds were filled with lots of tropical vegetation, Agoutis, Coatis, Iguanas, a few geckos & birds in abundance as well as a few racoons (?) running around to make us feel like back home.
I highly recommend downloading the resort app and doing a pre-check in. Which allows you to book Al La Carte restaurants ahead of time. Not that I ever saw the restaurants actually full, but you get your choices booked ahead of time.
Restaurants:
Found the menus very similar (?) for example they all had some kind of seafood item that was tweaked in a different way.
KEEP IN MIND THIS IS OUR CULINARY PREFERENCE TASTES
We could not book our first choice (Alux), so that one I won't comment on, lets just say that considering we tried to book it a week before our departure and it was was already full probably makes it a go-to.
BUFFET had lots of selection, but very repetitive, themes seemed limited. Actual Mexican cuisine was limited, repetitive and "Americanized".
***Best Mexican food we had was off site during an excursion at a local town restaurant.***
We had breakfasts at KATOK close to our villa, was a decent breakfast buffet, no complaints there.
Tikalito beach restaurant, no love on that one, went there for lunch and selection was limited...
Best choice was the Maiko. Unbelievable cuisine. Start to finish
Portofino, Just slightly below the Maiko.
Dolce Vita was running a close third behind Portofino.
Frutos Del Mar seafood restaurant was disappointing. No exceptional tastes beyond the appetizer. better seafood dishes elsewhere on the resort.
Tequila, total disappointment, more tex-mex than Mexican, selection not so great...
