Club Kawama: Cuba struggles, this resort is in the battle

We had very comfortable beds, and an ocean view. Coffee was on point. Only 1 day we had no coffee due to the machine being broken in the lobby and the coffee bar was without water. Both resolve by supper time. It was spring break for the Cubans and you could tell that they have done without. Manners were in short supply. The lobby bar would not serve you if you stood at the bar, but never politely told new or old guess, leaving some guest to be insulted by being ignored. A simple have a seat  [... read more]and we will be happy to serve you , could have gone a long way. A reconfiguration of the dinning area would alleviate the long lines for the buffets. There was always lots of food, just repetitive and not always appealing to our palates. we were given extra a la carte for the evenings, so this was appreciated. The resort wa s clean. Beer was plentiful, but as we are not drinkers we can not comment on other drinks. I have been to Kawama's before and I will return again.

Paradisus Varadero: Wonderful (if you come prepared)

We stayed on the regular side (NOT the reserve) and glad that we did as the main area had a good vibe going on while the reserve side was far too quiet and remote. The overall feel of the resort is lovely although it need of repair and maintenance. The beach is INCREDIBLE and the pool area is enormous and plenty of space for all ages. The resort staff are nice and do what they can to make your stay enjoyable considering the limitations Cuba has on food and drinks. Our hotel room was OK (a l [... read more]ittle tired and in need of repair (broken lamp, no hot water the entire week, not REALLY enough space for 4 people, not enough blankets) BUT we spent most of our time outdoors poolside or at the beach. Although the food was limited to about 50 ingredients total the staff did their best to make it interesting. There was always enough and we always had clean water to drink. What I don't recommend is the a la carte restaurants...the food is better at the resorts...and you have to get in line early to get a place setting. I would just stick to the buffets and you'll find something you like. Cuba is experiencing a tough time at the moment with resource and food shortages so the resort did a good job accomodating guests considering all of this. We came prepared with condiments, salad dressing and some snacks and had a great time. I would come back but would be cautious in which friends to recommend the same to as you really have to be prepared for less comforts than you would get in Mexico. If you're easy going Cuba will be fine.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Good

The grounds were under construction when we first arrived on Saturday and our rooms were not ready. The reception desk was a bit disorganized and seemed flustered at times. Food was a hit or miss but Out of the 3 restaurants that you could book the best one was the Japanese Al- cart. Very entertaining and food was hot. The buffets was ok but a little disappointing with limited selections. The staff did what they could do and always trying to please the guests. By Monday you could start to see changes with the grounds, the food was improving and the pool area was starting to look cleaner. One issue that should be noted was a few quests felt it was there place to grab the pool side chairs very early with towels or books. As well as allowing guests to sit on top of the swim up bar when you are trying to be served a drink. No one ever asked them to get down. The entertainment was ok but nothing to brag about. I give credit to the performers who did their best and always had a smile on their faces. I would rate this 3.5 and on the upward swing to improving.

Barcelo Solymar: Nothing spectacular

Hotel was nice elevator not working at times Food same every day,pool nice . Service in restaurant could improve .Staff was friendly and polite entertainment at night needs improvement The restaurant should be better organized you sit at your table no one comes to ask you if u need anything.aThere was shortage of pop and poor selection of drinks location is close to down town

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Resort was nice

Our vacation at this resort went as expected. Weather was great. Food was plentiful and had free bottles of water every day. Room was large and very clean. Shower had lots of hot water which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurants we went to were definitely the highlight of our meals. Unfortunately the resort seemed short staffed at times and there was no security to be found. Overall we enjoyed our week but would probably not go back.

Melia Internacional: Amazing Resort

We lately heard lots of negative comments about vacations to Cuba but at the Meliá Internacional we had a great experience. Fairly new resort clean abundance of food and drinks and beautiful beach. However they could do better with their services regarding beach towels and more so shower towels. The hotel is 25 minutes from Varadero airport but don’t book with Hola-Sun because it will take over an hour on the bus to get there both ways.

Iberostar Origin Laguna Azul: Will never go back there again

do never go to this hotel. Its very mouldy service is no good. Food is no good. Drinks are no good. The beach was not even clean. the bedsheets in the room are never changed. The pillowcases are never changed. Customer service don’t care for their customers. I was sick and my friend too for the whole week that we are there. I do not recommend this place at all.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Meh

First the people are exceptional everyone was so nice and accommodating. The resort itself amazing and the beach out of this world. The food was ok I'm not picky but it was pretty scarce to even make a decent salad and even the basics were abcent. Absolutely no condiments hardly butter for toast. Honestly this was the highest price I've ever paid for a resort in Cuba(1700) and the worse food Al la cartes were sad except the Cuban amazing. I lived in Kuwait for 6 months travel extensively and this has never happened. I heard people throwing up on the plane all ate at the Italian. Obviously food safety and handling is an issue. There are diehards to this resort some who have gone 20 plus times can you imagine. Blau Varadero: Definitely try elsewhere

First off, this is my 8th time to Cuba. We know what to expect, we understand the food and drinks and have never complained until now. To say there are "shortages" would be an extreme understatement. We visited other resorts and had friends at others in Varadero while we were there and they had very few things missing (mostly TP and tequila). Shame on Sunwing and Trip central for selling this resort. The staff were even commenting on how bad it's gotten and how the quality since ownersh [... read more]ip changed has been terrible. We had no pop 6 out of the 7 days, no vodka, rye or tequila the entire trip, and the last day and a half no rum! We only had dark rum earlier in the week, never had white rum the entire trip. We paid for select service which gave us the chill out bar, and that was the only place the drinks were decent enough the drink but only in the evenings and during dinner so not much time there. The food, well again, we are not picky, been to Cuba many times and yet this was horrifying. I'm not sure if the resort or people involved are paying for reviews, but we booked here due to the good reviews, and this is far from the truth! Again, a party of 4, we are simple eaters and have been to Cuba many many times with no issue. The food was absolutely terrible. I can't believe we paid what we did for this resort and we are not happy. No drinks, no juice, no pop and not much for food. Buffet was really bad, although the bread was good. Same food reused from breakfast through dinner and not at the correct temperatures. No pizza, fries, or simple food you normally get. Raw chicken, NO fresh fish other than a black fish with so many bones you wouldn't be able to eat it. For 2 days they actually served the TAIL of the fish, not even the actual fish (gross). We didn't have hotdogs or burgers as they stated and we went many times to the "24 hour snack bar" and it was not serving any food at all. The coffee bar was the best part of the resort, friendly staff and great coffee. Definitely not worth all the money paid to go though. Sunwing has options listed that you get for select and they aren't even accurate and when the rep spoke with the desk, they said no and that they have told Sunwing to change the listing many times so not helpful to us. To say we are disappointed is an extreme understatement. Definitely got rooked, would say more but at the end of the day, buyer beware and stay away! Go to Paridusus or Royalton right down the road, beautiful, no shortages and amazing food.

Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: Very bad

We did not check in on time, they made us wait for 2 hours,room was not what we asked, no clean bedsheets/towels, no toilet paper, room lock cards did not work at all times. The staff at the hotel was rude, did not want to cooperate at all.

Sol Palmeras: Sol Palmeras

We are so glad to spend our vacation in Sol palmeras. The hotel was kept nice and clean every single day the service was excellent the food was good and nice the area was nice and quiet the beach was clean water wonderful. Thank you for everything we can't wait to come back.

Barcelo Solymar: Not good

Food not good. I ate out almost every day. Same food for lunch and dinner every day. Pork in everything . I don’t eat pork. Even vegetables had pork. No snack bar. Rooms not clean and hard to get towels. Staff in restuarant on cell phone. Hard to get service even after tip

Melia Varadero: Amazing resort

The resort was great clean and well kept. There was plenty of food and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. The weather was superb. Was great having the mall right next to resort and shorter from the beach little waves but water was so clear. I definitely would recommend and return.

Melia Marina Varadero: 4 out of 10

The worst food in all the resorts I have been. Very low quantity of food and don’t taste good I had to fight every day for bottles of water. The beach was amazing. I loved it. The people were nice.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Top Notch!

Beautiful, large resort with unique boardwalk throughout the grounds. Very spacious and clean rooms with large balcony and separate bathroom so others may still be getting ready at the sink or shower. Friendly helpful staff, especially Bryan, our butler (customer service rep). We enjoyed yoga, pool fitness, volleyball, dance lessons and lots of walks on the beach. Tex mex was the favourite restaurant. Don't worry about upgrading to 'diamond club'. We were able to get into any restaurant by just  [... read more]lining up 15 min early. No problem when you have a pina colada in your hand and you're meeting new people. Many shade structures available. No shortages on food. Bring tissue to the beach or pool washrooms. Toilet paper does not get replenished there as often. Maids do a great job in the rooms though. Lots of entertainment in the main bar and restaurants. High class resort. Well maintained and attention to detail.

Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: The resort coul use some upgrades.

So we got off to a bumpy start on the day we arrived. I had paid for the upgrade to the Alegance section of the resort,having been to the resort 3 time previously I knew the section and were definitely not in the adults only section. Our first room had many deficiencies too many to list. We slept in the room we were given but I got no sleep that night. Had it not been for Jolie our vacation would have been ruined. The Alegance section service and food were great. The grounds were well maintained and the weather was perfect. I will return to this resort, Valentin El Patriarca however I will be asking for confirmation prior the leaving of the section requested. Los Delfines: Don't expect 5 star resort!

My biggest complaint was the washrooms on the resort, they had no toilet seats, no toilet paper, and smelled like an outhouse! Also the doors were left open so they were full of mosquitos and flies! The rooms are good unless you are on the third floor and had to walk up and down 3 flights of stairs! The food was plentiful but desserts such as cake were scarce!

Barcelo Solymar: There is nothing worse than this hotel

First room was with mold stinks like hell changed next day, had to beg for beach towels for 2 days, no hot water, had to beg to fix it, the lock got broken, had to enter through the balcony, spent half day to fix it. The cheery on top - when transfer bus came to pick up we had to wait for someone to open the storage room with our luggage. I kind of expect any of these happened but not ALL of it in one week. Stay away if you value your vacation time! Food was ok though. I lost 5 pounds)))

Sol Palmeras: Spectacular Resort!

This is not our first visit to this resort and it won't be our last. We keep returning because it is very safe and comfortable. The food is good and varied and is dependant on what food is available in the country. The rooms are well kept and clean notwithstanding the hotel is under partial renovation currently. Even though our area was having some minor renovations, it was never any bother for us. The grounds are kept pristine and workers are constantly grooming the landscape. The pools an [... read more]d pool area is clean and well maintained. Veradero beach can't be beat! We spent many hours walking on its sandy shores. Our most important reason for returning to Sol Palmeras would have to be because of the wonderful staff. They are the friendliest, kindest and most accommodating and will help with any situation. We have made friends with many staff and some have become like family. We would definitely recommend this family friendly resort.
