Great beach, super easy snorkel spot, comfy beautiful rooms (Royal club), entertainment above and beyond big resorts, small population - friendlier crowd!, Albertos next door - party time! Snorkeling expeditions need less swimming, more looking. Good service - but the hotel timeshare hounds got to become more scarce - annoying. Food was good quality, maybe needed more variety in the buffets - NO TAMALES!!! Boo. Wanted more varieties of fish - not just one mushy one. Wanted more deep/local Mexica [... read more]n dishes.Coffee and wine were good. Olive restaurant - needs to make a better looking steak - Seafood restaurant at night - terrible.... Best food quality and service was at the Royal restaurant. LOVE scootering around the island. Super safe.

Beautiful resort!

Lovely well looked after resort in the midst of beautiful vegetation. The staff were very friendly and worked hard. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return. Great service at the snorkel rental area as well.

Amazing holiday

My husband and I just returned from Occidental in Cozumel and what wonderful holiday we had. From its pristine grounds to its beautiful white sand beach with the most crstyal clear waters, this hotel won't disappoint. Staff was always plesant and so accommodating. Our room was spotless daily and always added touch to our room. ( Room walls were a little thin) We never had a bad meal, there was always something interesting and different to eat. Beautiful Resort

We were a little apprehensive when reading some of the reviews about the timeshare and the food, but found we didn't need to be. First off the timeshare people don't harass you, just say no and they will not bother you. The food was very good. You will not go hungry at all. We ate at the Seafood, Mediterranean and the Mexican ala cartes and they were all delicious. The buffet could be a bit better but we never went hungry. The rooms are very nice, comfortable and clean with a large washroom, we never had an issue with water, towels or the cleaning staff. The fridge was restocked daily. The gardeners and cleaners all always busy. It really was a great stay and we would definitely go back. This is our 4th stay on Cozumel and this is the first resort that I have said I'd go back to. ALL the staff were super friendly and helpful. The only negative is there is no free Wi-Fi.

Very nice resort

The grounds are exceptional. It's situated in a nature preserve, very mature trees, foliage, mangroves. Food was good, a la carte restaurants very good. Rooms are spacious, clean, very nice décor in the hacienda style. Pool and beach area was outstanding. Staff were polite.

Nice resort, could be better

This resort has the potential to be a 5 star resort. What they are lacking was , Food in the restaurants need to be upgraded. The steak they do serve is inedible and the buffets should have a better selection and maybe 2 omelette stations instead of one. The premium liquor was hit and miss, depending on whether they felt like serving it. They should also have a better wine selection. The front desk employees were very unhelpful. How is this possible? The resort itself has a wonderful layout and the rooms were very clean and well maintained. So, the bottom line, more courteous, knowledgable front desk staff. Beautiful resort

Amazing resort with beautiful landscaping. Kids loved the pool and the resort crew and activities. Half days excursions were fantastic. We went for snorgling and fishing and saw all kind of fish: Dolphins, stingrays, octopus,... definively a resort for nature lovers.

Things to consider

We went to this hotel at the beginning of May. We liked the setting in the "jungle", spacious rooms, and friendly staff. But there are some disappointing things: the see was terrible!!! Dirty grey water! We could not swim there and had to rent a car for the whole stay to go to other beaches, where the water was absolutely clean. We were told that it depends on the direction of the wind and the water is clean during other months... May be, but we were frustrated. Another thing is the restaurants. [... read more].. The food is tasty, but there is no variety, not much choice. Sometimes we had to wait until they bring something as the trays were empty. And no air- conditioning!!! You feel like in the sauna!

Very good resort

Beautiful resort with amazing landscaping, accommodation was super, my cleaning lady was the best (#1235). Beautiful sandy beach but a lot of litter in spite of garbage bins and ashtrays everywhere ( maybe guests' attitude should change as well). In the morning beach was tidied up but litter was still there. Service - a little slow, front desk always busy, but 2 men who were usually there were trying their best,very friendly and helpful but couldn't keep up with workload. Do not purchase Inter [... read more]net service - it's expensive and doesn't work properly ( some days it worked for 10 minutes only!) Activities - so much to choose from but if some of them didn't start from hotel grounds you have to pay transportation - taxi ( not cheap).Looks like they have "flat fee" wherever you go.Overall I had wonderful time. Nothing is perfect,you cannot please everybody.Restaurants - I used only buffet,it was OK but I would prefer better selection of fish and seafood in general. My recommendation - to hire more people a and to have ice machine in villas. .

Nice Resort

This a nice small resort. Pools are good the beach is excellent. The alacart restaurants are good. Friendly staff. Poor service at the buffets though. No utensils or napkins on the table while your food gets cold. No offer of water or a drink most of the time. I think it's understaffed. The shows are from 9-10 then you can go to disco if it's open. It is a nice disco.

Great Week

Got there at night and it was kind of hard to find our room. Room was very nice and roomy with good air conditioning, a very comfy mattress and a large bathroom with separate bath and a big shower with good water pressure. Hotel is small to med sized so never any big lines for anything. Grounds are kept beautiful. Beach is wide and clean and there were lots of lounge chairs available. Pretty good snorkelling right from the beach. Food was above average at the main buffet and the beach buffet [... read more]. The three individual restaurants were nothing special. After 9:30 the only food you can get is at the Pizza bar and quite frankly the Pizza is not good. Ladies at the front desk need to be a little more friendly but the rest of the staff (especially the great bartenders) were very nice and they work very hard whether you tip them or not. Overall a quiet and relaxing vacation at a nice resort.

Great Beaches and snorkeling

The hotel had a lovely Mexican flair. It was spacious and felt uncrowded even though I think it was completely full. The staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. The front desk was a bottleneck at times not having enough staff on to satisfy the crowds during peak times. The room was spacious, neat and well kept. Everything worked pretty well. Water was well stocked. External noise was minimal. The food was ok. It was plentiful and cooked well, but It was not gourmet. We ate of [... read more]f the resort a number of times to get really good seafood. In my mind it is the beaches and the snorkeling that really made the hotel stand out to me. The beaches were a lovely sand , there was lots of room and I never had a problem getting a beach chair. The snorkeling right on the beach was great! I didn't spend much time by the pools but they looked well kept and the people seemed very happy. The nighttime shows were intimate and alot of fun. Lots of dancing and different costumes. I liked the layout and the size of the resort. It was big enough without being too big. Everything was within a comfortable walking distance. Overall, a great value for a fun vacation.

Very nice resort

We had a fantastic week the 4th to the 11th of April at the Occedental Grand Cozumel. Rooms,Gardens Staff were amazing we didn't want for anything we enjoyed it very much we can't say enough about the staff the are all very friendly. I would definitely recommend this resort. Thank you for making our vacation fantastic.

Vraiment super

Un très bel hôtel , le Royal est une option à prendre ! Le centre de plongée est parfait, le nitrox inclus et la plongée de nuit était fantastique , nous y avons fait des spécialités et la formation était très professionnelle et en français

Very Relaxing

Rooms are large and really comfortable beds with TONS of pillows. Bathrooms large and beautiful. Grounds gorgeous but no ocean views due to foliage. Lots of wildlife which we found fascinating Food ok but could be 5 star if they improved food choices and lack of staff. The staff who are there work super hard and are very friendly but they are understaffed for sure. This is a very quiet resort which has a separate adult pool which is nice and quiet. Evening entertainment is very simple [... read more] and there is no theatre which didn't bother us at all. We would return for sure.

Awesome vacation

Occidental was an amazing resort, everything was so well looked after, very tropical looking. Food was fantastic everywhere on the resort. This was probably the best resort all inclusive that we have been to yet. We stayed in the royal luxury level, rooms were absolutely beautiful but the only complaint I had about them was they weren't consistent on keeping shampoo/conditioner and face clothes stocked in our room. Fridge was supposed to be stocked everyday with beverages but they also forgot [... read more] to fill the beer each time. But all in all we would 100% go back to this resort for sure and would recomend to everyone.

Absolutely beautiful resort and great for kids

We had a great experience. We have travelled to about 10 other all inclusive resorts across the Caribbean (Cuba, DR, Roatan) with our now 7 year old. This was our first trip with her and our 20 month old. The resort is beautiful. Rooms are super clean and updated. Food was good. Food can be a bit repetitive but one of the best we have been to and we usually stay at 4 or 5 stars. The lunch beachside buffet is big and opens very shortly after breakfast ends. The pool is right next to the beach which is great for people like me who have a child far more interested in the pool and I want to be at the beach. The kids club staff were amazing. They always had activities for the kids from pool activities to arts and crafts poolside and water balloon fights etc. They were very creative. Evening entertainment is lacking a bit compared to much bigger resorts but since I travel with kids I am ready for bed by 9pm anyway. Coffee is readily available before breakfast even opens which was great for my early morning walks keeping my baby from waking our entire building. Water was calm 5 of 7 days. Snorkelling out front of the resort was boring. Very flat and looked like a sandy field. I am not sure what the hype is about snorkelling there off the resort. Diving was ok. Well organized but diving is much better in Roatan, Honduras. They only have one beach bar with one bartender who hussled, but it was very slow because all of the drinks are made fresh from scratch. Annoying to me because I only drank beer but for those that like sugary fancy drinks you would appreciate the effort they put into the drinks. Overall we would definitely go back to this resort because it was smaller, and great for the kids. The entertainment staff (only 4 people) were incredible and were really what made the trip. They deserve a lot of credit.

Nice Resort

This resort was I guess a standard all inclusive, beautiful grounds in the jungle, the beach was nice but a bit messy with seaweed, and shells but it is a typical beach, the snorkeling is pretty great - lots of fish to see. The food wasn't horrible, lots I didn't try as didn't no really what they were, or had something I didn't like, there was always a good variety at the buffets if you chose to try everything, they also offer to cook up fresh fish or meats or omelets, eggs, etc. They have al  [... read more]a carte resturants, you have to book reservations, 2 at a time early in the morning and wait in line to do it. Staff works very hard and are always friendly or helpful, front desk would be better to have a few more english speaking, seems they had none of our requests at all, so had to ask when we arrived, it worked out but only because the supervisor was there. The rooms are very nice and large, cleaned well. Bar staff at the pool and beach were always busy, they needed some help, the entertainment was fun they tried to get people involved. Kayaks and snorkeling were free for an hour. If you don't like to or can't walk or go up stairs, this isn't the place for you, I didn't mind at all. Nightly entertain was funny, and interesting, the disco was too loud to the point you had to scream in your friends ear. There is nothing close around to do at night. Rented a car, which is interesting, the gas stations swarm you and you can't see what they put in in gas - and tell you how is it now, then he hasn't put in the right amount, so check the actual pump for numbers and litres pumped, happened to most who rented. Also, biggest turn off is the damn Occidental so called staffers, that hover and get you to go on a 90 min tour for buying time - high pressed at the end, but they scam you into going for a really cheap rental price or free snorkeling trip. They shouldn't be allowed to where those shirts - it looks like they are the staff - they are NOT! just sales men. They warn you but when you see they are part of the hotel you think you are in the right place to rent, there is another place for excursion and rentals. should be clearer. We loved touring the island and going into the town it was fun and felt very safe and we were there for Carnival so extremely busy. Check taxi prices - the hotel at the front the guy will tell you the prices, and ask on the way back to be sure. Over all we had a great time, hotel is average I would say maybe 3.5 - 4 star. Not are nice as other places I have been in Mexico but again it was a great holiday, met a lot of fun people that made it better!
