I just got home from my 5 days at Tryp Cayo Coco. I can’t wait to book my next trip. The people, the beaches, the vibes, are just a few of my favourite things when visiting Cuba. No shortages while I was there except white wine. The drinks were tasty and the coffee was the best I have ever had. There was always a variety of different things at the Buffett, and the A La carte was delicious. My room was clean and I felt very safe.
I will return in a heartbeat

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Old Tired Resort
In general the room was very clean. Bath room faucet was extremely loose and in need of repair. Hand held shower needed to be replaced as water sprayed everywhere but from out of the head. Toilet ran constantly. We had cold water in the shower for days until we had to complain.
In the dining hall and A-la-cartes, the waiter staff seemed slow and uninterested.
Non of the public washrooms ever had toilet paper, so we always had to carry your own. I would suggest bring some with you from[... read more] home.
Food shortages are very apparent. Out of 10 days we had eggs in the morning twice. Condiments were basically non-existent (jams, jellies, ketchup, mustard). Limited supply of fresh fruit.
All A-la-carte restaurants were very good and the only place where wine was served.
Only an orange flavoured pop was available, no cola for Rum and Coke drinks.
The beach itself was beautiful as always, garbage collected daily. Beach service was great.
Canadian dollars are now accepted for tipping. Staff will often ask to exchange loonies and toonies for paper Canadian money, as the banks in Cuba do not take coins. I would suggest you take a roll of loonies/toonies and paper money, you can always exchange paper bills for coins to continue tipping.
*U.S.dollar is still king.
I would not recommend going to this resort without purchacing the Diamond upgrade.
This was are 5th time attending this same resort. Very noticeable increase in Russian guests. All guests were polite and there were no problems.
When we first arrived there were house flies everywhere, I am talking flies of biblical proportion. Eating at this time was not pleasant, even on the beach. Peole would take their lunch to eat it, out into the water trying to escape the flies. We had crop dusting planes buzz over the resort for 3 to 4 days. Men with hand held fumigators spraying snack bars and tractors driving all over the resort spraying.
This finally brought the plague of flies under control.
We were told that the resorts had stopped incinerating their garbage. Not sure if this is due to the fuel shortage. I have no way of confirming if this was the cause but I was told that the locals need to line up for up to two days to get 1/2 tank of gas.
Over all the resort was very tired and in need of repair. I was told that the management has been changed 3 times over the past year.

Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: Resort grounds and Beach are Great!
Resort grounds are lovely and the beach is great, lots of loungers and palapas.
The food was not that great, even for Cuba.
Most of the toilets in public areas did not work, it was unpleasant. Noticed they were starting to renovate.
Had to advise reception many times to get things done, ie. toilet didn't work, but did get fixed after a couple of days, lack of toilet paper, most light bulbs were blown in room and never got replaced.
Music at pool was extremely loud, couldn't even hear my nei[... read more]ghbour talking. It was much nicer at the beach.
Staff were friendly.

Hotel Playa Coco: Can’t wait to go back
This hotel, although 35 years young, provided us with great lodgings, the quality of the food was very good and as usual the staff was amazing and friendly. The beach is very wide with lots of seating for everyone on the resort and the same applies for the pools, which were very clean. Can’t wait to go back. On a last note, The community manager as well as the managerial staff were at our service, and this, with a beautiful smile.

Grand Aston Cayo Paredon Beach Resort: Lovely new resort!
Absolutely amazing beach! Shallow water with dunes. You can wade out quite a way and still only be waist deep. White soft sand with only a few small areas of rock. Crystal clear water. If you follow the beach to the left there are 2 more hotels and an ancient lighthouse. To the right there is one more hotel and then you can follow the beach for over an hour. Pelicans and seabirds are currently co habitating with the tourist invasion.
The hotel is just over a year old. The rooms are spacious wi[... read more]th a mini fridge and nespresso machine. There is a huge walk in shower with a rain forest nozzle as well as a hand held shower. The bed was king sized and quite comfortable. My balcony had a great view of the beach. Housekeeping staff were excellent.
There was always plenty of food to eat, but not the variety you would see at home. Fresh grilled fish and a meat option were offered at lunch and dinner, there was also a pasta station in addition to rice, potatoes, pumpkin, and mixed dishes on the buffet. Fresh papaya, watermelon, starfruit, pineapple and grapefruit were available at each meal. Omelettes are the breakfast staple as well as a type of back bacon. The a la cartes were ok. I enjoyed the tex mex restaurant.Had to wait in line for over an hour to book the a la cartes though. Only one person taking reservations.
Waitstaff, bartenders, entertainment crew, were all very friendly and went out of their way to make things good. There were times when the surge of people in the buffet was difficult for staff to keep up with, but mostly good.
The entertainment seemed to start very late. The kids mini disco started at 830 at night, although it was well attended and the kids seemed to love it, it just seemed way past bedtime for the 3-5 year olds. The adult entertainment often started at 930 pm, so I did not see much of it, although I did watch the dancers rehearsing down by the beach late afternoon and they were very talented.
All in all, an absolutely amazing vacation! Thanks to trip central's Eliana Anton for helping us book this lovely resort!

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Will not be going back
This is my second and last time to Memories Caribe, we where there April 2023 and returned Jan 2024.
-First let me say I have been to Cuba 18times in the past 23 years and it was always a favorite but sadly no longer.
Food: The shortage's really show and normally I can find something to eat but this time it was really slim pickings not to mention the FLY infestation and again not my first time to Cuba but this time the Fly population was horrendous, when you have to take your lunch out into t[... read more]he ocean to get away from the flies!!! The buffet every piece of food and numerous flies on it and then day 3 they started flying crop dusters over top of us spreading pesticides that dropped on us either sitting by the pool or on the beach not to mention the fogging that had to happen. Part of the problem was garbage's where not being emptied and people where leaving their half drank drinks everywhere and no mix for drinks but water downed lemonade and tang!!! Gross! Our room was not swept once the entire week and yes we tipped! No hand towels, had a Keurig in room was supposed to have coffee and cups etc.. never got any of that. When we where there in April of 2023 we knew it was getting bad just never expected it to get that bad! We will not be returning to Cuba and that is very sad :-(

Starfish Cayo Guillermo: Mixed emotions
The room was well except for the 2 broken beside lamps. The service was good in general, staff was nice. Concerning the food - the redundancy of the food they serve, over and over, meal after meal, cut into different shapes but ALWAYS the same, no condiments whatsoever (not even oil to put over your salads) was REALLY irritating. Absolutely NO imagination whatsoever. Also, I drink white wine and coffee, easy right? They had no coffee for over a week at the bar, they heated some cold stuff with t[... read more]he espresso steamer and served it drowned into lukewarm milk. Wow. Forget about the white wine. They had a little on one or two days and then no more. BUT they DID have 40$ CAD bottles of white wine for sale on their bar shelves (really???… come on!!!!). This was my 3rd stay here and I have mixed emotions regarding any future trips at this resort. Not sure I’ll be returning. Too bad.

Iberostar Origin Playa Pilar: A great place to relax
My wife and I just came back home from a 5 days stay at this resort. This is a beach front property with a boardwalk that will take you right into the warm, beautiful turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Our room was kept nicely clean and tidy by the housekeepers of Bungalow 5, (thank you very much Lia, Lauren and Carlos). The food was delicious, varied and abundant, and we got to enjoy many different Cuban Cuisine dishes. There was plenty of fresh veggies and fruits, that made our meals very [... read more]delicious and healthy. The grounds are well kept and clean. I really have to commend the hard work and friendliness of the staff at this resort as they made us feel welcome and appreciative of our stay. This is definitely a place I want to go back soon again.

Iberostar Coral Esmeralda: POOR - for a 5 Star "this is going to be a long read"
I spent 11 days (Jan 9-20) in the Coral section and I was ready to leave by the 2nd day. I do not recommend the Coral section unless you're specifically looking to be left alone and like quietness. You do not get additional services, the buffet and a-la cart restaurants serve same food across both sides.
Grounds - well maintained, the gardeners work hard and are very friendly. The layout is pretty easy to maneuver around once you know your way around. They were happy and surprised that we[... read more] acknowledged and chatted with them. We speak a little Spanish but shouldn't matter a simple "Hola" goes along way for them.
Room - I asked for an ocean view room, well, I can't say I didn't get see to a glimpse of the ocean (that's all it was). They are having alot of issues with house keeping. My shower was not cleaned the whole 11 days. Depending on who you get, you will get floor mats as hand towels (I got it twice as the regular person was on a day off). Come on, that's not acceptable. empty fridge, 2 (500 ml) bottes of water. Exchanging of towels we had to call Public Relations and they would deliver to the room.
Dining Rooms - Coral side is 2 years old and the dinning chairs look like they have been around for longer, they are dirty and a lot of stains, very disgusting. The first 9 days, we were given a very thin ply paper towel for napkins, unacceptable for a 5 star. Depending who is servicing, you get what you get for service (some great friendly staff and others, they look and treat you like we are disturbing them).
A-la cart restaurants, not worth it, they pretty much serve what is on the buffet.
I understand that the Country might be struggling with resources, but customer service, cleanliness and service need a lot of work, this is not a lack of resources it comes down from the Top "Management issues". They need to lower their rating because they are not working at a 5 star level. I have stayed at other 5 star in Cuba so I can compare. I have also stayed at 3 star in Cuba and had better service and amenities.
Common area bathrooms, were a hit and miss (more of a miss) with having toilet paper, so I was always carrying it with me and lacked cleanliness with not working toilets. Again, definitely not a 5 star rating.
All, my issues I'm expressing here were discussed with their Public Relations representative (Ariel) and his response was, here is a bottle of water, your towels (pretty much shutting us up) and the hand towel situation was addressed immediately. We were locked out of our room on two occasions (7th day - opps mistake, come to the front desk for assistance, again on the 10th day - oops - again come the front desk. We spoke to Ariel regarding a late check out and he said it's 11/hr. I'm like anyway you can compensate us for all the inconveniences we have been experiencing, he had the nerve to say "what inconveniences" and went on to say this is a Socialist Country and we do not negotiate, that is the price. We did not lower our head and walk away this time, we exchanged some words with him and walked away, but nothing rude.
Staff / Guests - we met some wonderful people both staff and guests. They were the ones that made our stay better. I want to say thank you and a few shout outs to Yari and Mi (Taca Taca - they know what I mean) for their friendly smile and tried very had to keep guests engaged. Joseph (singer/pianist) what a great guy, it shows he loves what he does and that is entertaining and engaging with the guests. Some bartenders were awesome (hard to give shout outs by name, as they don't have name tags).
Beach - absolutely amazing, calm, warm and crystal clear to the exception of a few days. Once my feet touched the sand, I forgot about all the issues that were behind me. The beach boys, were very nice shout out to Humberto, very friendly and engaging.
But take this as you may, this was our experience in the 11 days there, maybe things just happened to us, but I would have a hard time believing it was just us.

Melia Costa Rey: Had a great time!
The Gran Marena Cayo Coco was fantastic! Although there are repairs needed to certain parts of the resort, this didn't stop us from having a great time. The food was much better than I had anticipated and I had been to this resort previously. The staff are the best and will help you any way they can. We had an issue with the shower in our room and I think the solution would be to install a new shower head. Customer Service was notified and came to inspect. They wanted us to go to a new room[... read more] but we refused because we only had one more night to stay. Restaurants were great and the bartending staff do a great job. The weather was fantastic so that also was a bonus. Yes, there are shortages but nothing to serious that it would ruin your vacation.

Gran Muthu Imperial: Poor entertainment, understaffed
I didn't mind the kids and daycare at GM Imperial even though it's marketed as adult only. Some food shortages but good staff. The entertainment was terrible. No real music (although there was a grand piano in the lobby). The sound system in the "theatre" was crappy AND the bright LED lights lining the stage made it hard to even look at. Hotel Playa Paraiso: Worst experience in Cuba over 15 years
I have been to Cuba many times and at this resort is the second time. It is extremely disappointing in terms of hygiene, flies, power, and water outages. We were not able to have one single bite without worrying that we were eating flies and mosquitoes. Foods at buffets are covered with flies) They serve coffee in plastic or champagne glass.
