El Cozumeleno Beach: our second trip at el cozumeleno
We were welcomed with an upgraded oceanview room with a lovely message and chocolate covered strawberries welcoming us which was very kind. The grounds were beautiful and the 2 people that stand out as wonderful customer service people were Martha at the front desk and Fredrico in the lobby. The food was average, loved the restaurant for breakfast in the morning. Having to wait in line every morning to book the alacarte was not for me, that should be changed to everyone at least once getting a[... read more] chance to have one booking during your stay without the wait. We noticed that when ordering off the menu at least 4 people took care of you and they didn't work together which meant either your food was cold after a 35-40 min. wait or that the order was wrong, this should be addressed by management . The beds were very uncomfortable, but the rooms were quite nice. Everything was very clean and all in all it was a very nice week away. From Ontario, Canada

Royal Villas Resort: Mixed Feelings
We would give this resort mixed reviews.
A very small footprint here so not much room to wander on the hotel property. However, the beach was great for walking long distances. As well the hotel is located right on the main drag so lots of shops, restaurants etc nearby. This was a plus but also a minus as there was lots of traffic making the road difficult to cross as well as providing lots of noise. The hotel itself has an opening extending through all twelve stories so noise from the low[... read more]est level reverberates all the way to the top. There were two weddings at the hotel which we are joy to witness the beautiful dresses and happy Mexican families, but some people might find the noise to be a problem. We were fine with it.
Other than the music for the weddings, there was no nightly entertainment at this resort. Daily entertainment consisted of local singers on some days, a Salsa group for cruise ship participants, and recorded music for the pool which was quite loud. There was a pool table which had other things crowded around it, a ping pong table, foose ball table, etc but required a fee to use which we have never encountered at any other resort so we did not use.
Rooms had comfortable beds but linens were stained. Sheets were not changed daily and we noticed a musty odor in the beds after we were there around a week. Bathrooms were attended to daily but not immaculate by any means. Be sure to tip housekeeping or service slides even further.
Complimentary water and soft drinks were provided in the room which was appreciated. There is no mini fridge or coffee pot in the room. The air conditioning was very powerful and great.
Pool area was clean. Most days service was efficient. This resort does allow smokers to smoke anywhere around the pool which we found to be quite annoying. Smokers would probably appreciate this, though.
Food is provided in 3 areas. The morning breakfast buffet which serves some breakfast foods and some lunch foods, but closes at noon which we found odd. You can then order a limited variety of meals through the pool snack bar for the afternoon. Supper is served in the restaurant. Food was very good and fresh but limited choices. There is an extra charge for certain foods like steak, lobster and specialty shrimp. The staff are very friendly.
Wi-fi service was excellent and complimentary.
Had a pedicure, manicure, and haircut at the salon. Mixed feelings about this. The mani and pedi were well done, but no top coat provided for the polish so did not last long so ended up wasting my money. The haircut was also well done, but felt ignored by the hairdresser as she talked in Spanish to the other staff and only addressed me with a couple of questions about what I wanted done. Definitely did not feel pampered. I seemed to be the only customer on that day.

Barcelo Ixtapa: A resort with a mixed bag of excellent to disappointing
The internal structure of this hotel is very dated and needing both a design and repair overhaul. The bathroom especially was unbelievable. A large person would have to walk into the shower in order to close the door on the toilet/shower. Tiles were broken, cracked, grouting dirty and also broken. First impression of the room was "yuk" BUT the outdoor areas were beautiful and the location perfect.
It is a resort that obviously caters more to the Mexicans and as such was interesting to stay in[... read more]. As several staff told us, it was originally a Sheraton and in those days was much classier! Built in 1983, it would appear that little has been done to the interior. Of 4 elevators, only 2 were working for the two weeks we were there though there was constant repair work going on on the out of action elevators. The working elevators screeched alarmingly at times!
Food was good in two of the three specialty restaurants and average in the buffet. Disappointing that the Japanese restaurant did not cook the food at your table and the noise level in it was very loud. Staff were always pleasant and tried to be helpful but struggled with English ...but then we didn't speak Spanish.
The beach was fabulous and certainly we were at the best place to go in the ocean. Would highly recommend that aspect.
Despite our disappointment with the hotel interior, we might go back simply because the location is so perfect and we think we can rise above the poor room conditions.

Las Brisas Huatulco: Beautiful Resort
The resort is on a large piece of property so feels spacious and easy to find a sense of quiet and calm. There is a nice view of distant mountains and the grounds have beautiful plants and lots of birds. We really enjoy the daily tennis lessons (Paco is a great teacher) and yoga. Restaurants are good, and we enjoyed the Beach Club rooms with a balcony and view, along the additional services.

Barcelo Huatulco: NOT "All Inclusive" Unless Upgraded to PREMIUM
Our Barcelo Huatulco experience was disappointing. While this Barcelo is nice it lacks the Barcelo branding we are familiar with. Here are a few examples:
1. Booking All-Inclusive at this destination doesn't really mean "all-inclusive." To really experience "all-inclusive" at this Barcelo means one must upgrade to "PREMIUM." The cost to upgrade to "Premium" is $35.00 US per person per day so $70 per day for a couple times seven days equals $490 US, converted to Canadian dollars roughly $650[... read more]. For this extra $650 we could have had a King bed in an Oceanview room, premium drinks in our room refrigerator, premium drinks at the bars and wine at dinner. It was disappointing to learn the extra costs for wine at dinner, and that the Corona beer at the bars are reserved for "Premium" guests!
2. You have to stand in line EVERY DAY to book the ala carte restaurants. We were only able to get two ala carte bookings because most of the premium supper times are taken by the "Premium" clients. This means that out of the 18 meals we had at this Barcelo, 16 of them would have to be at the buffets, which gets old after 2/3 days. Booking the ala cartes starts at 9:00 am in the morning and several days we were there at 9:00 am, stood in line for 30-40 minutes and couldn't get a dinner reservation before 8:30/9:00 p.m.
3. The food facilities are only surfaced cleaned. The serving spoons in the buffets are not changed often enough. The sides of the tables feel grimy to the touch, as do the arms on the chairs -- seems these surfaces do not get washed which is very unsanitary (take your own disinfectant wipes!).
The Barcelo Huatulco was rated 4.5 Stars. Our ratings: facility 4; systems/processes 2; and buffets 3. While the ala cartes were nice (Italian and Mexican) having to pay extra for wine at an all-inclusive isn't the norm.

Another great time. Sun always shines here. Stunning views from our room to the great food. Premium alcohol. Beautiful beach, terrific snorkeling. recommendations when families book please try and keep families together as it took us two days to resolve this problem. Second tip would be to heat the main dishes at the Italian restaurant properly. Food overall was great their main course needed to be heated thoroughly. Love the Japanese restaurant and seafood

Riu Flamingos: Lovely, well manicured resort
We stayed at the Riu Jalisco from Jan 25 to Feb 1, 2019. It is a beautiful, well manicured resort. The service all over the resort was excellent. All the employees were friendly and happy to help you with anything you needed, be it a bartender, a waitress or the front desk staff.
The food was very good at all the restaurants and the buffets, with a fantastic selection to choose from, with the exception of one. The steak we had at the La Botana Steak house in the evening, really left someth[... read more]ing to be desired. It was thin and very tough. We stood in line for 20 minutes to get in but it was a real disappointment. The specialty coffee was a real treat and quite the show. Be sure to ask your waitress to have the “coffee guy†come to your table at least once during your stay. He seemed to always be in the Don Emiliano buffet.
The evening entertainment was really quite good. We especially enjoyed the Cirque du Soleil style show and the Michael Jackson tribute. Also the Mr. Riu contest was hilarious. They had a really nice open air theatre situated between two bars with lots of table and chairs.
The rooms were a nice size, nicely furnished and kept very clean. There was one thing that did bother us, but I’m not sure what could be done about it. That was the musty smell when you first walked into the room. It was very humid while we were there, but I’m sure it’s always humid there being on the ocean. We have been to quite a few ocean side resorts and I can honestly say, they did not have that strong musty smell. Our friends’ room also had that strong musty smell, so I suspect the whole hotel was like that.
This hotel is situated on a beach with a large grove of palm trees so you always had a choice of shade or sun. The beach was very clean and you could walk for a long ways. There were always lots of lounge chairs on the beach and at the pools no matter what time of the day you went down. We never had any problems exchanging our beach/pool towels. There were always lots and the towel lady was very friendly.
All in all, it was a lovely place and I would recommend it to anyone.

Grand Decameron Complex Bucerias Trademark: The Royal Decamdron Complex - Our Home Away From Home
This was our 11th visit to this resort and the number of repeat guests is amazing. Staff work very hard and aim to please. The buffets change every day and you can always find something good to eat. There is a gourmet station 1-2 times per week where the chef prepares plates that look too pretty to eat. The rooms are basic but very clean. The grounds are beautiful. The entertainment is excellent, including an Elvis impersonator show on Mondays. Staff are receptive to feedback. The beach is ver[... read more]y long and you can walk for miles. Kayaks, boogie boards, and a ride on the catamaran are included. This all inclusive gives you good value.

Grand Oasis Sens: Grand oasis sens in Jan/Feb
The beach is AMAZING and Antonio at the beach bar, was the hardest working person we met at the resort. He was super friendly and remembered our drinks by the second day. The 3 pools are great but not heated; we preferred the hidden pool as it had great Bali beds and a deep pool, great for swimming. Our room on the second floor was a little humid because there are no windows or balcony and didn't seem to air out much. Especially since we had to dry our wet bathing suits in the bathroom everyday.[... read more] However once the air conditioner was on, it helped a bit.
The entertainment by the main pool at lunch was so so: lap/poll dance lessons, water volleyball, free short massages; nothing that truly interested many people. The foam party on the Saturday was a lot of fun!
The service was great but could use a bump up since it seemed the tipping made a big impact.
We had an issue with our safe and after visiting the front desk to ask for help, security came to our room and fixed it within 5 mins. The "coffee and me" place had great coffee and snacks through out the day and late snacks from 11pm to 2 am. Sakura was the best restaurant we ate dinner at, each course was delicious. You need to make a reservation for it but we managed to get in 2 times during our 7 night stay. The next best restaurant is "The Box" which had a crazy reservation system but worth it. We had to stand in line from 6pm to get a 7pm reservation for that same day. They only have 2 seating times 7 and 8:30 and each holds about 20 people. The other two dinner options for us non Sian Kaan guests, were Moonlight which had a great salad bar and Italian a la la carte dishes, and Coba which was an international buffet, food was good at both.
Lunch options: Sushi Bar was really good, we ate at it almost everyday. Maria Bonita was the only place where you can order "authentic" Mexican food which was delicious. Hippie Chick was good too but served more greasy good like burgers and fries which we didn't really care for.
We emailed ahead of time and informed the hotel it was my birthday and they went out of their way for us. Prepared a special 4 course dinner and served it at Moonlight since Sakura is closed on Wednesdays. They also surprised us with a bottle of champagne and cake in our room.
On Thursdays, everyone at the resort is invited to party on a pirate ship off the resort. The party can get pretty wild and drinks and some snacks are included. We were bussed there and back returning around 3 am. The other nights, entertainment is hit or miss.
Overall, we had a great time. There were things that weren't perfect but we thought it was great value for what we paid. We met great people and will have lots of memories.

Binniguenda Huatulco: Perfecto
We tried Binniguenda for our 3rd visit to Huatulco and loved it. Having stayed at bigger resorts Binniguenda was much more our speed.
The room was clean and cozy (no refrigerator). The food was excellent. Staff were helpful and friendly. The grounds are well kept. Pool area relaxing.
Would recommend and hope to stay again.
