Food and beach was absolutely amazing. Aesthetics and upkeep could use a little work. We had a leaking air conditioner in our room that finally was fixed on the last day we left. Pool did not look absolutely clean or maintained. A section of the pool did not have water in it and appeared abandoned. There were other areas that looked liked they had been working previously but were abandoned.Upkeep of property definately could use some TLC.

Playa Caleta: Friendly Staffs
The food was horrible, tasteless. the al a carte restuarant was a bit better. the beach was beautilful. The bad thing is most of the staffs do not speak fluent english, but nearly all of them have great sense of humour. They serve their own version of coke which i did not like, so i was able to overcome my addiction to coka cola while in CUBA!! yippe, our last night it rained and it leaked into our room. The staffs came to clean but it kept leaking though the night. I tried to tell them to put a[... read more] bucket to collect the water so that we will not have to keep calling them to mop. We were on the 7th floor and we had a great view of the ocean. To enjoy your stay go out of the city for a tour. We went to matanza a city close to varadero, safari county ride and speed boat with a tour guide that speaks clear english. We almost went to havana but we couldn't make it due to time. If u are going to this resort take all your seasonings, maggi, curry, salt, black pepper, hot pepper, even their bread was tasteless. My next trip to cuba i look for a hotel that has microwave. A few mosquito bites, Thank God i took my own toilet paper, the ones they had was like real paper, the cheapest one i have ever seen. the oil ridge or so is directly across from the hotel so the smell comes in so strong, and it will wake you up from your sleep. thank God i had vinegar and room freshner.

Melia Las Antillas: Very ordinary resort
Rooms very ordinary. Food : good breakfast, but thank the Lord for pastas and pizzas at lunch and supper. The 3 Ã la carte restaurants need to improve their menu. The italian resto did not serve pastas or pizzas !!!
Beautiful beach & superb water but the resort need to hire staff to clean up the beach ground covered with plastic glasses, plastic straws and cigarette buts all over. Great need of more garbage cans that are already full by lunch time.
Entertainment very good from 21:30 to 22:15.

Hotel Bella Costa: Great Family Resort
The service impeccable the food was delicious the hotel & room was clean and well attended. We had an amazing week there. The only issue we had was with the towel & umbrella attendant. He accused me of taking an umbrella and wanted to charge me for a lost and stolen umbrella which I didn't take. I spent almost hour waiting for them to sort it out!

Resonance Blu Varadero: Good resort. Could be great!
We just recently got back from Memories Varadero. We are a family of 5. 3 boys ages 15, 20, and 22. This resort is really geared towards the younger crowd. They had a blast. The beach is fantastic and the 2 pools are good as well. One is the activity or party pool and there are a lot of young impaired people at the swim up bar. The other pool which is closer to the the lobby is a lot quieter but still has a swim up bar. This resort is huge so if you don't like to walk it may not be for you. We d[... read more]on't mind walking. Everything about this place is hit and miss. One evening the path lights are on the next they're off?! Same as the food some days you will find things you like and the next time it's not there. The servers are mostly friendly and willing to look after you. Now what really made me give this a 3 star was the fact of them running out of ice, soda water, wine!! One day I couldn't get red wine from 4 different bars. then I got some from the buffet. Later that night when we were at the lobby bar, where everyone gathers in the evening again no red wine, so I ordered white for my wife. When I went back up for a second glass, no white wine! Really!! A resort chain like this and you don't have wine!! I don't know if they are trying to ration everybody or staff is to lazy to get it. Also had a cell phone stolen out of my sons room. So in closing The beach and grounds are beautiful. Rooms are clean, but could use some upgrading, old box TV and ghetto blasters! Just get clock radios with built in docking stations! We will not be returning however my boys loved it. Lots of potential

The hotel was unique and not to big. Easy to get around which made you feel comfortable. The rooms, pool, and all areas were always clean. The food could use more flavour, but the variety helped. The staff and guests made the trip worth while.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Great place but could be so much better
I spent four nights there in late August and booked the trip only a week or so before. Here's a summary of the good stuff and stuff that could be better.
Good Stuff
-- I want to praise the Trip Central agent I dealt with: Judy Donaldson. The tripcentral.ca website was very user friendly and I was able to do a lot of research (including users' reviews) myself, but I wanted to talk to a real person before booking. I saw Judy's name and number on the website and called her (late in the day, I shou[... read more]ld add). She was extremely helpful then and ever time I spoke or emailed with her from then on because I had many, many questions after booking the trip that she answered promptly -- even when I was in line at the airport! A great rep and a nice person.
-- The beaches at the resort are magnificent. I'm not normally a person who likes to sit on a beach all day, but taking it easy on a lounge chair under one of the resort's palm umbrellas was fantastic. The water was clear and so warm.
-- The main bar in the centre of the resort is a nice place to relax in the evening. It featured live music a few times that was entertaining but not intrusive.
-- The room was much nicer than I had expected. Clean and relatively modern. The bathroom was especially spacious.
-- The butlers at the resort were very helpful. I'd read a lot about the butlers before booking and wasn't exactly sure what they did. Everyone wrote about how they will book you into an a-la-carte restaurant and that was helpful, but our butlers (they work 12-hour shifts every other day, so you end up dealing with more than one) were helpful with things like recommending a tour of Havana with a private car (more on that below) to getting us into a restaurant the night we left but after we had checked out.
Stuff that Could be Better
-- Everyone who goes to Cuban resorts knows this, but the food was for the most part unremarkable -- or worse. There is plenty of selection at the main restaurant, but their inability to do simple things like eggs and pasta are perplexing.
-- The whole "a-la-carte" restaurant thing was new to me. I first thought that "a-la-carte" meant you had to pay extra; you don't. They have four at the resort. I ate in three and only the Caribbean-themed one was OK. The Tex-Mex place, which is also the one on the beach where you can get food during the day, was not great for dinner. Avoid that one.
-- I visited Cuba on business in the 1990s and one of the things I remember most was how good the coffee was in Havana. I didn't have a decent cup of coffee at the resort because it's all done through machines.
-- Service at the resort was mediocre. The front desk staff were helpful; the restaurant staff were hit and miss and the bar staff often look uninterested and distracted.
Other things to know
-- One of the biggest surprises happened at Pearson. I had specifically packed light to avoid checking a bag but at the counter I was told that Sunwing restricts the carry-on weight to 5 kilograms. So even though my bag was regulation carry-on size, it was too heavy and checking it was the only option. This is something that should be spelled out clearly. I saw others in line who were caught in the same predicament. (And strangely, it appeared that Sunwing didn't enforce this on the trip back because people were coming on with huge carry-on bags that they could barely lift to the overhead compartment.)
-- One of the best parts of the trip was when I booked a private tour of Havana, with the help of one of the butlers. They make a big deal out of getting you a vintage U.S. car (in my case a 1957 Ford) and there is a driver and a tour guide who speaks perfect English. I had specific things I wanted to see in Havana (having been there 20 years earlier for business) and the tour can be customized to whatever you want. Our guide was very personable and gave us an honest assessment about life in Cuba. He also took us to a "real" Cuban restaurant (a private enterprise, not a government-run operation) where the food was absolutely brilliant. Cost of the meal for four people was over $120 Canadian. The tour itself is 75 Cuban pesos per person. We tipped the driver and guide a further 50 pesos because it was a great experience.

Memories Jibacoa: Our honeymoon
We arrived on Tues. Sept 1st and the beginning of our time at the resort was good. The resort is small and beautiful and the beach is incredible! The rooms were quaint and clean. The food wasn't amazing and there wasn't a huge variety but you certainly wouldn't go hungry. Most of the staff there were happy and friendly. My biggest complaint is the food handling safety. Different raw meats are all cooked on the same grill using the same flipper. I was served my cooked chicken with a slipper cover[... read more]ed in raw hamburger that was just added to the grill. I did notice a few times that my chicken wasn't fully cooked. I'd push it to the side and just thoroughly inspect each piece. Stupidly, I continued to order it.
My husband got really sick on the Friday night (throwing up & diarhea) and was sick in bed all day Saturday. Sunday morning he was feeling better and we went for a swim in the pool. Sunday after lunch I became really ill. I threw up violently and had terrible diarhea until Monday night. I slept on a beach towel on the bathroom floor Sunday night. We flew home on Tuesday and I wasn't sure they'd let me on the plane I was so sick and weak. We will have been home a week tomorrow and I'm just now starting to feel better.
Our honeymoon was ruined. :(
I would definitely recommend that this resort be inspected for food safety!

Blau Varadero: Wonderful vacation!
The resort was clean and well-kept, food was better than most in Cuba, and the resort employees were amazing. This was our first time staying at the Blau Varadero, but we would definitely go back. Only negative was we didn't enjoy the International a la Carte.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Almost perfect!
Upgrade to Royal Service is worth it! Rooms were more modern and recently updated. Butler service fantastic, Durian and Miguel were gems! Food was okay, typical resort food, good for Cuba. Had some issues with mosquitoes and dirty sheets, but staff was quick to change our room and replace bedding. Also gave us a discount on the upgrade.
Beach was incredible, best yet and this was 10th all inclusive I've been to. Crystal clear water, soft sand, stunning.
Wifi included with Royal Service ($2 cuc[... read more]/hr otherwise) and only works in lobbies. Need cards to log in. Liked this, didn't look at my phone for a change!

Resonance Blu Varadero: Don't recommend
The grounds and public areas were clean, rooms were also fairly clean but everything is extremely old and mostly broken ;such as the temperature control. Although we had issues with our room, once we called the front desk they sent someone to come help/fix right away. The food was not good as per the normal Cuba standard. One specific complaint about the A la Carte bookings is that they only gave you 2 for your whole stay -one of which we missed because of miscommunication with the lady who book[... read more]ed it- which is not enough considering the quality of the food in the buffet. The beach was very nice and the water was crystal clear, definitely one of the best. On the other hand, the pool with the water slide was very dirty and muggy. All in all, I would say it was way too expensive for what we got and although we had an awesome vacation, it could have been even better if the hotel quality was much higher.

Club Karey: Extremely uncomfortable
I'd discourage staying at Club Karay. It is poorly serviced, dirty, uneatable food, and dated. I traveled throughout Cuba on this trip to get a sense of the what's out there; this is not a suitable resort to vacation to. It is simple deplorable.
