We found everything very relaxed, clean and comfortable. The ac worked well, the rooms were kept very clean, the staff were friendly and accommodating to all our needs. It was nice to share our stay there with a majority of Mexican tourist families with young children...got to experience a little more of the Mexican culture that way. (I was particularly impressed with their lovely positive and gentle parenting style...didn't hear the loud scolding/ordering of kids around that we NA parents often[... read more] do!:) One thing I noticed this time as well as last year...when you arrive you don't get much of an orientation...no one showing you around re: what is available and where i.e. massage, clinic, main floor washrooms etc. Maybe a map of the grounds/facilities would be nice idea.
Meals were good, breakfasts the best! The taco chips/with all the toppings by the pool in the afternoon were hot, fresh and delicious! (Guacamole and sour cream are more Tex-Mex than actually Mexican we discovered...none to be had.) Being on the coast the emphasis is fish.We had the option of 2 a la carte restaurants. We tried the Guacamajazz restaurant. The salmon was amazing...the soups very good as well...the "ravioli" was inedible. (Hard, cold and undercooked, no red sauce, just sitting in an oily flavourless clear liquid...not even butter!) We did choose to vary the food by eating a few of our meals at fantastic inexpensive little restaurants/pubs we discovered in the neighbourhood, right close by.
Drinks were absolutely wonderful...and kept coming:)
The evening entertainment was a little hit-and-miss...most people seemed to really enjoy it.
Our ocean view room overlooked the pools, and we noticed it was quite loud. Next time we will try a room overlooking the garden instead and see if it is quieter.

Krystal Ixtapa: major disappointment
Lets start with the lawn chairs they provided they are old and dirty,we covered them up towels or we would have been standing the whole week.
In the dining room it was hard to find a plate or cup that didn't have a crack line or chip, most of the tables wobbled, there was missing tiles on the floor you had watch where you walking. The food didn't have much to pick from same thing over again,we ate out 6 times. Most of the staff didn't speak english,I had an ice bucket in my hand asking 4 different [... read more]cleaning staff where I could fill it up they didn't know,so I phone the front desk asking where is the ice machine they ask for my room no. and hung up I never did see that iceThe air condition worked half assed, the vent for it was covered with dirt and black stuff. One day I was going to step in the shower and there was no water for 45 minutes good thing it didn't happen when the wife shampooing her hair you would have heard screaming 10 miles away. The bath towels are old and rough get new ones please.Never coming back its a 1 maybe 2 star tops. Way over priced.
The grounds of the resort are well maintained. The rooms are a little outdated but clean.
The resort is on the smaller side, most of the restaurants are in the same area.
There is tons of chairs beside the pools and along the beach.
The beach area is small and because of the location you can't go for a long walk on the beach.
There is two buffets, one indoors and the other open.
Both serve most of the same food with a few different dishes.
They only had one theme night where some dishes we[... read more]re different.
We did four of the restaurants, Mexican, Italian, Japanese and Steak. The Japanese and the Italian were the best.
They had a different band every night that played in the lobby bar before and after the main show.
Friends of ours used the kids club which they really enjoyed.
The margarita were delicious!
They crepe and the food trucks were good lunch options.
We used the bicycles on site to go to the marina that has a Dolphin center.
The mini golf and tennis court were decent and the sports bar was fun with all the games.
It was a relaxing vacation!

The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences Playa Del Carmen: Highly reccomended!
This hotel is fantastic! The food is incredible. There was no dish we tried that anyone didn't enjoy thoroughly. Everyone that works here is friendly and accomodating. They keep this place very clean and are always working to improve things. The entertainment staff is wonderful and there are many different activities you can join in if you desire, but there are also many quiet spots in the resort that you can go to where you can be poolside without others around.

Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya: Very pleasant resort
Pros:
Very nice hotel. Grounds were well kept. Rooms were adequate although walls are paper thin. Dining was the highlight of this hotel. Food & service were excellent. Staff are very well trained. Enjoyed the hotel's entertainment.
Cons:
Music around pool and activities was very loud. "All Inclusive" allows for too much alcohol consumption which tended to create a loud and obnoxious environment. Alcohol service should be limited or refused to individuals who are inebriated. There are reaso[... read more]ns that responsible Provinces do not allow service to intoxicated patrons.

Paradisus La Perla Adults Only Riviera Maya: FOOD POISONING-VIOLENTLY ILL-HOTEL COULD CARE LESS
We have just arrived home after a horrible stay at Paradisus La Perla.
On Wed night we ate at a restaurant Bana Fusion, in which two hours later we were both violently ill until 4 am the next day.
Luckily we met a nurse from Ontario and called her room and she came straight away with medication and ran out and bought us Gatorade.
We alerted the hotel front desk and customer service but never heard from them.
We were feeling better 46 hrs late and then ate at a restaurant The Grill and once a[... read more]gain was up all night ill.
From there on in all we ate was a banana, dry toast and water.
When we checked out the hotel did not inquire into our stay, they just passed up a piece of paper with a sad face or happy face on it and asked for our room and name.
We were totally appalled at their lack of professionalism.
This is hotel is marketing itself as a high end resort and part of a hotel chain which prides itself on customer service.

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort: Great time at Sandos Playacar ...except....
First the bad...
We read that the resort had bicycles. We love to ride and looked forward to riding a lot.
Unfortunately, the bicycles are terrible !!
They all have very small frames, so the seat has to be jacked up very high. The bars are very low, so the resulting ergonomics are extremely punishing. So much so that we could only ride a few minutes before it was painful. We are not large people. I'm 5'8" and my girlfriend is even shorter. So forget riding any distance if you are any bigger t[... read more]han us.
We thought that we would use the bicycles in the gym, but there was NO bicycles in the gym. Unbelievable !! There were stationary bicycles in an area devoted to spin classes but we were not allowed to use them unless we were there at a specific time for a class. This was very disappointing.
Also, at every resort we have stayed at over the last 5 years, water peddle boats were available. NOT HERE.
So no luck trying to get any bicycle exercise. This is important for me as I have
bad knees.
Now the good...
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this resort. First time in Mexico for us.
The food was great. We found the serving staff to be friendly and enjoyable to talk to. The large beach area was kept clean by a machine that cleaned the sand every morning before sunrise.
Went to one show, Michael Jackson tribute. Very good !
We spent a lot of time using the watersports equipment. We enjoyed using the kayaks, but the big hit for us was learning how to sail the Hobie Cat Catamaran.
After a short lesson from Gilberto I was able to sail confidently. My girlfriend and I spent a fair amount of time sailing in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean. This was heaven !!
Can't say enough about the great watersports staff that we spent a lot of time with on the beach. They were very friendly towards us. We felt they were taking good care of us and watching out for our safety.
Hats off to the watersports crew... Armin, Jorge, Gilberto, and Marcello. You guys are the BEST !!

Grand Decameron Complex Bucerias Trademark: Great Stay
This is the 5th time I have stayed there and as always there is nothing I can complain about except for the fact I had to pay 350 in Mexican money to get the key for my room safe. In the past I was given that money back but this time when I returned the key they said it was not refundable which I thought was wrong. Other than that it was a great stay got the room I asked for so everything was perfect

Royalton Hideaway Riviera Cancun: Great Vacation!
The Royalton Hideaway Cancun was great! The adults only section was great and you could get everything you need without mixing with all the families on the other side of the resort. The room, the restaurants, the shows and the STAFF were awesome. I don't think I got up for a drink once! The ONLY downside to this resort is the beach. Although long and had beautiful white sand, there was a ton of seaweed and the first 10-20 feet into the water it was very murky. Moon Palace Cancun: BAD experience
We would never recommend this place. Many that attended the wedding ended up very sick, quite sure it was food poisoning. The ocean and the beach are awful. Very murky and full of seaweed. A huge tractor is going back and forth on the beach the majority of the day. The swimming pools are freezing except for one that is heated and packed. Very, very disappointed.

The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences Playa Del Carmen: Great beach!
I think the beach and the mangrove forest with the monkeys was the best part of this resort. The resort had some sandbag berms installed about 50m into the water, trapping the sand, which made the water pristine baby blue and clear, which the rest of the beach beyond the resort, did not have. Also this time of year (early Jan) the pool water was cool and the ocean a lot warmer which made the beach more attractive than the pool area.
The food at breakfast and lunch I would say was average 5* re[... read more]sort food. The beach burger bar burgers were really good tho. The meals at the restaurants in the evening was absolutely excellent (especially the Italian and French restaurants). The Mexican restaurant was very good too. Thai was below my expectations as it didn't taste at all like typical Thai to me.
The service at this resort was also below my typical experiences at a 5 * resort. In my 5 days there, the maid service was inadequate (a dirty rag was left behind, not enough fresh towels were restocked and neither were enough water bottles provided for 3/5 days I was there) - it was however a clean (and new) room I stayed at so I was happy about that. I would have liked to have better cleaning service though for the price I paid to be there which was far above what I normally spend for a 5* in Mexico.
Also, I found it surprising that not everything was all inclusive in this "all inclusive" resort. Again, for the money it cost to be there, I would have thought that "all inclusive" means all inclusive and that a fresh coconut at the beach shouldn't cost an additional $5US. That's just a rip off! Neither should the beds under the canopy's by the pool area cost extra to rent. That's just nickel and diming tourists. I've never seen this before at other 5* resorts. Disappointing extra costs.
Upon check out I was also not told that if I didn't return the resort bracelets they tag you with for the stay, at check out, I would be charged an additional fee. I thought that having to pay that would be outrageous especially given how expensive this resort is.
If you have lots of money to spend this place is pretty good but I wouldn't peg it as that much better than other places I've been.

Riu Palace Baja California: New,very modern, clean
This is a brand new hotel in the Riu chain. The rooms are beautiful with balcony and you have a rack to hang wet clothes. The pools and sitting areas all terrace down in the centre of resort.Very good view of the beach ,sea and the cruise ships that come in.Lots of beach chairs on the sand and around the pools.Only a few minutes with the town bus to go to the marina or about a 40 minute walk.Walmart is outside the resort 15 minute walk if you need to get anything. The buffet was amazing with so m[... read more]uch food to choose from that you should never say there was nothing there you like. The restaurants, the Italian was great, good lamb chops.Good selection of entries. Japanese was very good, not as much your choice for the appetizers they just bring out sushi.entrie was good.
The Krystal fusion was likely the best and the most organized with the staff. You made the choices for both appetizers and entre.Very good. The steakhouse needs to be revamped. Location in itself makes it to be very noisy. The staff where literally running around causing more confusion. You had no choice for the appetizer which came out with octupus, scallops.shrimp in hot sauce. Not everyone will eat these things so its pretty limited .The main course was steak ,lobster etc.Your choice. The steak was good if you got it cooked to your taste. My husband's steak came out raw the first time.Sent back but was barely cooked in places to medium. They fool around a lot with serving the entre with trying to find the ladies meals first. They lift the lids to find on the tray who's meal is who's,which to me causes more chaos. The tray fell to the floor which caused more stress on the wait staff. The French fries served with a very spicy coating was not good. You had no choice with the potatoe. We did not go back to the steakhouse. It needs a new menu and choice. The Indian restaurant was with no choice you just where sent out small dishes of I am not sure.Very spicy and for myself I just couldn't enjoy anything. It also needs to have choice and a new format. But when all is said the buffet was always a good choice to eat with everything to choose from.Fish ,salmon, lobster all was available to enjoy.
The resort really caters to the party group so not much peace and quiet. The resort was beautiful and I like the quiet in the morning too sit by the pool and just relax. No music but by 10 am the music is on and it's the music for younger adults. It would be nice if they had spa music till noon. The partiers are likely just getting going by noon,or maybe they could use some quiet music for their hangover. You had bar service all day at the pool with staff getting you your drinks.Very good.
The aquafit was very good when run by Alexandria. You got an amazing workout.
Entertainment was there each evening but I am not one to take that in.The tenors were good.No comment on entertainment. The young adults running entertainment where very nice.
Overall the resort is beautiful, good food, and the view is amazing.I saw the most amazing sunrises each morning. Its a resort you should enjoy. We did.We had 3 couples over 60.

This resort was absolutely beautiful with the walking paths, animals, and foliage.
