Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Wonderful Resort
Everything about this resort was remarkable. Food delicious, staff kindness over the top. Polite workers, sun fantastic and flights just grand. We were met at the entrance with champagne and pleasant staff. Warm facecloths given to us along with the expertise of the staff there to explain the lay of the land and the extras of the resort. Proceeded to the bar where we were again greeted with polite staff offered food and drink. Each of the reservation restaurants were over the top. The 24 hr Bist[... read more]ro was the BEST. Staff very friendly and food once again great. Love the shows each evening! I would certainly go back there once again.

Roc Barlovento: Needs some renos and upkeep.
Great location for walking around Varadero. Rooms and Food Fair. Staff very courteous and helpful. Rooms and bathrooms need updating. Pool clean. Would prefer bar closer to pool. Afternoon and evening entertainment good. Would pay a little more to get better rating.

Resonance Blu Varadero: Definitely for the younger crowd
This resort is very large and very noisy in the public areas. Our room in Bld. 22 (after some room shuffling) was comfortable and quiet at night. The staff were excellent in all areas. The food was more than adequate and lots of it and there were food and drink areas at both pools and the beach. There is a lot of walking required to and so for older folks it might not be a great first choice.

Punta Peninsula Varadero: Amazing Staff
I loved the staff!!!! MAMA and JIMMY at the pool bar are AMAZING. My daughter(5), boyfriend and I all went together and we have no regrets. The staff is very friendly and not tip hungry. The resort was clean and the food was alright for Cuba. There was a great mixture of young families, couples and young peoples. Make sure you book your dinner reservations right away as they fill up fast. Our check in was lengthy but this was due to us changing room, which they were very accommodating. WATCH OUT[... read more] FOR SAND FLEAS....unfortunately I was unaware of them and got bit up pretty bad. Do not miss the Michael Jackson show! This resort is very kid friendly with a kids club and the one day they had an animal show with monkeys and camels on the beach. I can't wait to go back once our dollar is more at par.

Iberostar Selection Varadero: Beautiful time at a beautiful resort
Our group of four just returned from a week at the Iberostar Varadero. We had stayed there several times before, but not in the last six years, so were anxious to see how time has changed things. There were a few familiar faces and many new ones which is to be expected.
The grounds were even nicer than before, with the trees and plantings maturing and thriving through the years. The ocean level seems to have risen with beach erosion the unfortunate result. While there, the resort brought in a l[... read more]arge bulldozer to level the beach and eliminate a plateau created by the wave action. We were told that the long range plan is to cut back some of the vegetation to extend the distance from trees to ocean. One of the secrets of this resort is that it is a small resort with a lot of beachfront. You can be close to the action if you want, or far away if you like it quieter.
The lunch buffet by the pool was our favourite. Table service was attentive, food good, and a different musical group playing Cuban music every day. Lots of birds flying around. Watch out for bird poop on your chair. The main buffet was also good. I sometimes find myself resorting to pasta when other choices don't appeal, but this week I only ate it once. Lots of variety, great taste and beautiful presentation. House wines were OK with a la carte choices available for extra $$$$.
Our room was almost perfect. The bathroom was showing it's age a little. The bed was very comfortable, AC worked perfectly, balcony was large with drying rack for bathing suits, towels etc. Small size of resort means that you are never far away from anything. Rooms are a good size and very comfortable.
This resort is a real gem, with great service, lovely surroundings and comfortable rooms. This was our fourth visit and we will be back.

Starfish Jibacoa: Great Value for your money
We stayed at this resort from April 18/25 to April 25/15.
Food:
There was not a lot of variety at this resort but we did eat was good! We had hamburgers, pizza & hot dogs at the snack bar by the pool and all were very good!
Buffet had the usual fish, chicken, beef, some goat or rabbit(I did not try but heard it was good).
Rooms:
Bungalow 101 is where we stayed and it was kept very clean daily. We had no issues with this room except for the beds they were very hard but we made it through the we[... read more]ek.
Beach:
We spent most of our time here on the beach. Beach was clean and was always being raked and cleaned by the many gardeners that work here. This is a great snorkelling area as the coral starts right off the beach and stretches across this resort! We never had an issue finding a beach chair and when we forgot a towel behind, it was turned in by security.....thanks so much Mario Torres!
Staff:
Very friendly and helpful staff especially the bartenders at the pool bar and lobby bar! I found the reception staff very quick to dismiss as if they didn't want to deal with anything! One blonde hair lady went as far as to complain about other staff and customers in front of several other customers.....very unprofessional and definitely a turn off. The ladies and gentlemen in the buffet worked very hard to try and keep ahead of the tables but there just doesn't seem to be enough servers. One particular server was outstanding, she was always smiling, laughing and seemed general concerned about her customers....thanks so much Soraya Villa, you made our last few days the best ever!!
I would definitely return to this resort as it was a great value for the money!

Palma Real: This should be your LAST resort.
I have traveled around the world and stayed in resorts in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Malaysia, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda. This was by FAR the worst resort I have ever encountered. The room was spacious but the bed was damp and the pillows were disgusting. When we removed the pillow cases there were nasty yellow sweat stains covering every inch of each pillow. Our towels were never changed once. We marked the corners of the towels just to see and the same two towels were simply fol[... read more]ded up and hung back on the rack each day. The air conditioner didn't work and just made the room smell musty when we turned it on. The resort itself, was very poorly maintained and there were broken and missing tiles all over the pool areas and walk ways making it look very shabby. There were not enough lounge chairs available for the guests and it was very difficult to find an empty one. There was no security to handle unruly, drunken people, of which there were many, and they were belligerent, vulgar and very loud. There were people vomiting in the pool and cigarettes floating everywhere. There were many locals hanging around without bracelets, and while guests were lined up ten to fifteen people to get drinks at the bar, these locals would just stroll up and cut in front of the paying guests and get served. It was an all around unpleasant environment. There was absolutely no air conditioning anywhere. There was nowhere on the resort to take a break from the 35+C temperature. Even in restaurants, that had AC on, they would have all the windows open, making it completely useless. Also, the elevators barely ever worked. We were on the fourth floor.
The food was terrible and downright dangerous. The buffet was swarming with flies and on a couple of occasions I saw small cockroaches around the dishes. I got a breaded chicken cutlet that was raw and frozen in the middle. When I pointed this out to the staff they apologized to me and threw it away, but didn't remove the cutlets from the buffet even after a number of other guests complained of the same problem.
The beachfront, about a ten minute walk from the resort, was absolutely stunning. One of the nicest beaches I have ever seen. Crystal clear water and soft white sand. Except for the cigarette butts everywhere, the beach was fairly clean. The problem was there were FAR to few shaded areas for guests, and what shade there was available was held by security for people who had given them money. Even if they weren't there the seats in the shade had towels on them marking them as "Taken". My wife and I got to the beach at 6:30AM and all of the chairs with shade already had towels on them yet we were the first on the beach. We simply walked to a thatched umbrella and removed the towels, putting them on another chair. The security guard came over and tried to tell us the chair was reserved. We just shook our heads and sat down anyway. He gave up fairly quickly and left us alone.
I wanted to leave this place by day three, that is how unhappy I was with the resort. I live in Red Deer, Alberta and just went through a long and brutal winter. I was desperate for a vacation in the sun. I was looking forward to this trip for months and in only three days, this resort had soured me on the whole thing. If I haven't properly conveyed just how awful this place was, that info alone should speak volumes on the quality of this resort. I wouldn't even give it 2 stars, let alone 3 and 1/2. Very, Very disappointing.

Club Karey: A dump
I would not send a dog down to this place. The place is terrible the food aweful and the people are very ignorant and not very friendly The pool bartenders are alway mad at something and we had to fight just to get an extra ice cube in our drink
We stayed at this resort March 2014 and returned aril 2015 with our two older kids as we had really enjoyed our stay there and wanted them to experience it.
The beach is fantastic! No complaints there, the kids spent more time at the pool and really enjoyed it as well.
The service is poor, down hill from the previous year. The front desk staff in particular seem to go out of their way to be difficult, they always seemed to be confrontational about anything you asked of them.
Food-You are unable [... read more]to book the restaurants that are part of the all inclusive. We went on the first day, and we had no choice in what we reserved, we were only able to get two reservations.
The hot buffet needs to be revamped, as the food is often unappealing. We frequented the omelette bar for breakfast and very often the pasta bar for other meals. Management needs to offer more made to order options!
Rooms-average to below average, I requested coffee in the room so we could make a pot in the morning. They supplied it one morning, and then we discovered the coffee maker was broken- they replaced that.. Next morning there was no coffee again, I had to request it again, after that I received it . Just a hassle that you have to keep after them!
Value was good, price was right for us, but remember you get what you pay for.
Location-good, flies very bad at night especially at the late night snack bar at the lighthouse. Wear long pants or bring fly repellent. The bites made a mess of my daughters legs, not to mention the itching.
Resort had an ongoing issues with there storm water sewage as they have posted on memos on the resort. The smell can be awful at times especially when walking by their market area.
We had a good vacation with the kids, because it's all what you make of it. We've been to this resort twice now, but I have to say, we won't be going back, time to find a different resort which meets are needs a little better.

Memories Jibacoa: This one is definitely a go back place.
The most amazing thing was the snorkeling. No arrangements, no extra costs, just get up out of your chair, don your gear and walk out. It was so entertaining. The resort is not too big so that getting around to the common areas were not a daunting task in the heat. The staff was of the friendliest we've experienced. The resort is close to where people actually live, so we could just walk out of the resort and go for a walk up the road and meet people. I been in many resorts in Cuba in the past years: Most of them were part of Melia : Witch in my opinion was the best rated in Cuba ....How many times we planed the next trip to Cuba . So many times we were afraid to chose any other hotel than Melia.
This time we have to admit that "OCEAN VARADERO EL PATRIARCA" changed our impression forever: Beautiful Resort, Spacious and clean rooms, Friendly and popular staff in all departments from the beginning to the end of our stay, Quick and responsible C[... read more]USTOMER CARE in person of Miss. Me and my Wife never tried : A La CART, restaurants ....Being really happy with the Buffet, where the variety of food satisfied all our needs. Contrary to many of the reviews about the food and service in this restaurant. The only thing they can comment is ...More cleaning of dishes have to be more clean (THIS IS A FIVE STAR HOTEL). We will be happy to come again in the fall.

Melia Las Antillas: Pretty average resort.
Grounds and buildings need attention. Very smelly pond/fountain. Pool wasn't being well taken of. No amenities at the beach but it is a beautiful beach. Too far to the beach bar and washrooms and not enough staff. Pool bar was good. Buffet was below average. Italian restaurant was bad. Other 2 restaurants were ok. Pleasant staff for the most part. Clean rooms, excellent entertainment.
