Even though this hotel is older it is well kept and all staff and grounds personnel are very friendly . Enjoyed Alex in the morning making eggs on the grill. The buffet is varied and no problem finding something to eat. The bars and entertainment is enjoyable and fun to visit and watch.

Melia Las Americas: Wonderful vacation
The hotel was absolutely first class. The grounds are kept impeccable, the staff are really friendly amazing people and my room was fantastic. The food gets to be a tad bland, as in every resort I have ever stayed at. The entertainment was not up to par, poor in fact.

Palma Real: Needs Some Improvements
The hotel needs some upgrades like they need to throw out the towels with cigarette burns on it. The sheets was also dirty. The rooms were not of 4 star quality more like a motel 6 quality.
The Piazza restaurant changed the meat in the lasagna from ground beef to tuna and didn't tell us. The maids and most servers was very nice and friendly. The entertainment was great as well as the Jeep Safari excursion was the highlight of our trip.
Really enjoyed my stay! The staff was pleasant and professional. The rooms were clean, thanks to Yuni:) The only thing I would recommend are more umbrellas at the beach! The AquaDanse show was stunning! Had a great time!

Be Live Turquesa: Will return great resort
4 days ago. Great resort old but clean. Friendly staff just like family. Will be returning. clean room but not fancy. love the staff there are always happy to help with no expectation. We were there for 10 days and will return. A nice place to relax. Good food and plenty. We never had to wait at the buffet. The À la carte restaurant (there is three) but our favorite was the Mexica (+++ for the waitress). Lesaro super for anythings at the reception. The beach is fabulous and always enough chairs[... read more] and shade. No problem to reserve a spot for a few pesos. thanks again to the staff for a great vacation hola

Melia Marina Varadero: OK experience.......
We were first let down by the Hotel immediately since our room wasn't ready until 7:30pm. Also the grounds were not kept as clean as I expected from Iberostar. But as the we progressed we found the resort to be acceptable.

Grand Memories Varadero: No accountability with change in owners
Unfortunately we stayed at the Riu Varadero from March 26, 2015 to April 2, 2015. This was the last week before it was sold to Memories on April 1st. We were warned upon our arrival by other visitors that there were a lot of problems with the hotel. Here is a run down of what we encountered.
- Check in at 4:00 p.m. and not 3:00 p.m. that was printed on our documents (late check in on both counts)
- no towels - given stained used towel that was the best of 5 that was shown to me
- no plates in di[... read more]ning room, chipped and cracked plates - no cups (coffee in glasses)
- dirty table cloths
- dirt on the buffet walls
- poor service - not enough staff working
- hot food was not kept hot at the buffet
- beach towel exchange impossible - kept same towels all week
- no water for 12 hours (husband all soaped up, had to use bottled cold water to rinse
- power out - air conditioning had to be reset
- getting up by 7:00 a.m. to reserve chairs for the two of us - too few chairs and very crowded - heard 3 different fights over towels and chairs - people from the upgrade section could take our chairs
- the grounds were dirty with cups, cigarette buts and gum
- grass not maintained
- no one to listen to your complaints - staff made promises that were not kept
We have travelled to Cuba 4 times, Dominican 8 times, Jamaica 3 times and Mexico 3 times. This had to be the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. We normally travel with two other couples. They were sorry to hear about our problems with the hotel but were glad that they had not booked with us. I realize the hotel was changing hands but a warning would have been appreciated since I had direct contact with a Trip Central person about the trip. This was definitely not a 5 star hotel.
THE BEACH AND WEATHER WERE SPECTACULAR and the hotel itself was quite nice but needs major improvements beginning with managers that are accountable for the day to day operation of the hotel. Looking out the window from our room that was suppose to be at least a pool view, was a building with scaffolding set up.
I had a few concerns before I booked this trip, but felt that with the Riu name, there would be no problems.
Please consider this review from a person that is not difficult to please. Hopefully things will change for the better in the future.
Not sure about the Riu name anymore.
Regards,
Margaret Piccolo

Be Live Turquesa: Highly recomended
We have travelled regularly to tropical destinations in the last years staying in 5 stars rated resorts to more modest ones. Where we were happily surprised with the Be live Turquesa was the amount of return clients we encountered during our stay, some of them for the 7th time... After a few days we understood why....
The resort itself is modest in size, the rooms dated but clean and freshly painted. You will not find smoke salmon and shrimp cocktails at the buffet restaurant but the difference [... read more]is in the service and wonderful friendly attitude from the staff of all levels.
We never had to wait in line at the restaurant where your meat or omelets will be cooked to your specifications, and the variety of food is surprisingly very impressive. The bartenders remember what you drink and the staff remember you after the first day. The beach is absolutely fantastic, and there is always plenty of clean chairs in a shady area if the sun is too much for you. The pool is refreshing and the entertainment is tasteful and professional. You are at a close distance of Varadero where you can do some shopping or easily take a day tour to Havana safely. We highly recommend this place and take this opportunity to thank the wonderful persons we met there Ola Lasaro, Maria Louisa and Yony(life guard).

Melia Peninsula Varadero: Matur and lush resort
here are the things that we, as a couple think are important: the rooms were worn but clean and comfortable and stocked daily with beer, water and pop, the grounds were tropical, mature and well maintained, the food was above average for Cuba, 99% of staff that we dealt with were pleasant and helpful, lots to do on or off resort, no problem getting shade or chairs on the beach or at the pool regardless of time of day. The only thing we can say on the negative side was that even though the childr[... read more]en have an amazing play park and children's programme, and their own pool many parents choose to bring them to the adults only pool. If this were enforced by staff, this would be the perfect resort !!!!

Resonance Blu Varadero: Great Vacation
Memories Varadero is good value for the money. The rooms are big and kept clean but they are in need of some repair which the management are improving everyday upon. The food is ok nothing to write home about but you don't go to Cuba for the food and you definitely will not starve. The beach is amazing and the pools are big and kept clean and they where warm while we were there. The people are amazing and always addressed any concerns we had.

Oasis Islazul: Great Little Resort!
This was our second visit (Feb 2014 and March 2015). We have stayed in identical rooms (215 and 216), both on the second floor with a balcony. The room is large, shower stall tiny but adequate and we had lots of hot water. We heard of others who had no hot water(in the old section attached to reception) New lounge chairs and shade stands improved the beach experience. The beach and water were what we went for - and were not disappointed!
We have no issue with the food. The was always lots to cho[... read more]ose from. I avoid the "mystery meat" but enjoyed the chicken, pork, beef and goat. I have learned to not take samples of everything - to be selective, so that the meals are not monotonous. I had the best black beans with rice! We were offered wine in the buffet restaurant - previously only available in the a la carte restaurent. The red was really good.
The pool was always clean and hardly used.
In 2014 we considered the evening entertainment to be awsome. In 2015 this was the only disappointment. It started late, was loud and lasted only 40 minutes. In 2014 we heard some fabulous music with some great bands. It was O.K. this year. Some of the "entertainment" was drawing from the audience to participate on stage. Not my normal cup of tea.
We will go back. The price and excellent beach are the clincher!

Club Kawama: Okay Resort
The grounds are well kept. The ocean is beautiful. The pools were kept clean. The snack bar is the best part of the food, you could get a hotdog or hamburger, or a ham and cheese sandwich. The food at the buffet was disappointing, Hot food should be hot. I was very unhappy with the food. Been to Cuba a couple times and this was the worst. People are nice, staff is friendly.

Resonance Blu Varadero: Really nice Resort
This resort is huge. We stayed in building 32 which is really close to the beach and the main pool. It takes about 11 minutes to get to the main lobby by speed walking. The beach was beautiful, the staff is great. Don't be picky when it comes to the food. There are lots of options for food its just bland. I would go to the main buffet and stand in a small 5 minute line up and get fresh cooked pork or chicken, it was great. Catamaran boat cruise is a must. Barcelo Solymar: A real mix bag
The buffet is one of the best I have experienced in Cuba. It is an extremely busy resort with guests checking in 24 hours/day but there is not enough staff to handle the volume. The guests are a good mix of young and old and the beach is one of the better area in Varadero and the location of the resort is good because I can walk to many places. The staff is excellent but the younger guests from Canada are causing a lot of trouble , bringing their own music while the resort has its own and that c[... read more]auses a lot of noise, fighting with each other drunk but the hotel manager was quick to set them straight and bar tender are great in cutting guests off when they saw guests are intoxicated. The rooms are good but lots of cockroaches because guests are shuffling their unfinished food all over. The poor cleaning staff are cleaning continuously to keep the resort clean. Lots of activities and I had a great time over all.

Hotel Los Cactus: Will Return
We were two 50 something women interested in golf and a trip to Havana. This being our second trip (first time stayed at the Bella Costa) we were familiar with the Breezes Varadero but had not been inside. The only reason I can not give it a five star is because I believe that is reserved for over the top. Our welcome on Saturday night was warm and efficient. The room we requested was available, quiet second floor with a welcome bottle of rum. It was large cool and clean. We found the grounds ea[... read more]sy to learn, large enough to enjoy a walk but not to much to get lost. The flowers and shrubs were beautiful, well kept and very clean. This resort is well cared for. Yes it is over 25 years old and some doors are warped, had a wasp one night, but for a Caribbean location it was not at all musty. The food, wow. We have stayed in many all inclusives. Had absolutely no complaints about the food. Yes on occasion a bird might try to make off with some food, but hey they were here first. The variety was enough so that you could eat a different meal at each seating. Yes some things I did not like, but that is the same at home. The wine was tasty and plentiful. Some nights it was Chilean, others it was Spanish. The beer was always cold and the Scotch strong. If you preferred a mixed drink, I would suggest the lobby Bar. A special coffee, there was a bar for that too. We played in the pool, always clean, many chairs and the ocean, great except for the ignorance of some guests. This is a mostly no-smoking resort so the odd butt in the sand was revolting. There is so much more to say. I loved the staff. I just wish I could remember and name them all. Yes we tipped and left some gifts. They were all much appreciated. Will we return. we are already planning next years trip. Oh and about the golf and Havana, we managed to find some time for that.

Palma Real: Very central, very relaxed!
This was our first time in Cuba. We were told that the Palma Real is the oldest resort in Veradero. It does show its age, but it is very clean, and everything in the room works. (air conditioner, hot shower, etc.) If you don't like your room location you can get it changed, although it may take a few days. We ended up with a great room on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the pool and bar where the daytime entertainment took place. Fun! The best features of the resort are the 4 pools, t[... read more]he great bar staff, and the proximity to the local straw markets, restaurants and night spots.
We found that the food was plentiful, but just average, with a lot of dishes made from chicken and pork. It was somewhat bland, but the desserts were good. There are a few little idiosyncracies like coffee is only available at breakfast, not at lunch or dinner. However, the drinks are plentiful and the staff is good. They look for tips on a regular basis so if you are a "once time tipper" usually at the end of the vacation you might consider giving your favourite staff 1/2 up front and 1/2 at the end of the vacation. Also, most staff appreciate things other than money, for instance hard candy or childrens' toys . Most of the staff speak pretty good English, as well as French. The clientele is almost all Canadian, with some from Russia.
Veradero seems to be a very safe place to vacation. There is a healthy respect for the law, with stiff penalties for drugs and other crime.
The beach stretches for 26 kms, and the Bellevue Palma Royal has its own beverage and snack shop at the beach. Very nice. The sea kayaks and small catamarans are included, and the guys are friendly and helpful.
We really enjoyed ourselves, met a lot of people to hang out with, and would definitely go back to this resort.

Punta Peninsula Varadero: Don't go to Cuba
Never again!!
I loved the beach, the warm water, and the weather. Now for the bad part, the resort was way over rated. When we checked in the had not enough pillows, not enough towels and no sheets for one of the beds. Plus there was no soap,. We brought a lot of stuff ourselves in case we had issues. The bugs were bad, no how water, the food was ok if you are on a diet. Plus my wife an son both got sick from the food. The alcohol you are lucky to get 1/2 ounce shots and the rum tasted like bug [... read more]spray if you asked for it on the rocks. They want you to have a sugar drink with it son you cant tell how bad it is. I had boiled eggs and coffee every morning just to be safe. The wine in the restaurant is like a bad box wine which is much better than they serve you at the front bar, omg I just couldn't drink it. If you weren't tipping you got very bad service. They say all inclusive but want you to tip constantly. I did not have high expectations when I went and it was worth than I expected. Not to mention our tour guide spent more time driving us to places where "he knows a guy" to sell us over priced cigars and junk. Plus they even try to take you to restaurants that are triple the going rate because they get a kick-back. I always wanted to go to Havana but in reality there is nothing there. At least when I went to Chile I got excellent service and the old downtown was very cool. All the resort staff wanted to tell you how poor they were and why you should tip them.

Palma Real: average but needs improvements
Some rooms on the lower levels were musty. The evening we were to check in our travel representative was no were to be found and it took us a long time to get our rooms. The best part of the hotel was that it had great entertainment and was right downtown close to shopping and all the good clubs.
