Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria: Don’t go to this resort
We booked our vacation based on the reviews here and I went to this resort with an open mind since it’s after the pandemic.
Here is what you really need to know.
-the beach is wonderful! Has always been and will always be. There is no comparison at this price point
- the food is bland and repetitive. The white rice at lunch will be the brown rice at dinner. I understand that they have to use the left overs but honestly you need to bring the following with you.
-ketchup
-peanut butter[... read more]
-jam
-pitas or bread cause theirs is so hard even toasted
-nuts or chips cause there are barely any snacks
We ate the same food for an entire week. I was extremely excited to see calamari on the menu the first day but by day 4… I can’t see any more calamari!
For the food is basic, you won’t be hungry but you won’t be satisfied either.
The accommodations- the rooms are in need of repair and they are extremely outdated. Clean but outdated
The service- poor! I was used to the happy people of Cuba and enjoyed my interactions in the past, but it feel like they don’t care any longer and are just hunting for tips
The resort- outdated and in need of repair. I would have thought with so much time on our hands during Covid that they would have taken this time to repair and upgrade their hotels.
Other notes:
The music sucks and is very disturbing and not you expect from an adult only resort. Typically they are classier and have soft music playing. Not music like you’re in the late night club.
The wifi situation is poor, always having to ask for more wifi and constantly having to sign into use your rations.
The door keys constantly stop working and when you’re going to the third floor and have to clean all the way back to reception to get your key fixed again! Very annoying.
My overall opinion, is that if you are prepared, it’s a cost effective vacation but you should really only count on the beach…and nothing else
We all came home sick!

Playa Luxury Cayo Las Brujas: Wonderful Vacation
If you are looking for a great relaxing holiday, this is the place. We stayed at the Angsana from May 10 to 24, and just loved EVERYTHING about this resort: spacious and bright accommodations, delicious food, superb drinks, etc. ALL personnel are very attentive, competent, friendly - simply fantastic. They are so eager to please their guests. They truly spoiled us. Will not mention any names for fear I might omit someone.
The resort is well appointed, making it very easy to get around. T[... read more]he grounds are very well kept - so many varieties of bushes, trees, and flowers - a delight to behold. Good job gardeners! The beach is second to none. It just doesn't get any better. Loved the two smaller beaches as well - very private. Occupancy during our stay was low, so it was very quiet and relaxing. We highly recommend this resort and look forward to return very soon.

Iberostar Selection Ensenachos: Amazing Fitness / Entertainment Staff
We stayed at the beach everyday for the whole week. Since there is no electricity at the beach area, the Fitness staff focused on volleyball only. One day, Osmany Gonzalez Lara, was resourceful enough and borrowed the bluetooth speaker of my friend and we had dancing lessons at the beach - both in the beach area and water. That was an enjoyable one and a lot of guests participated. I have a video to show how Osmany was leading the dance and again this was because of his resourcefulness to cr[... read more]eate activities at the beach.
Appreciate if you can commend Osmany on this as truly he is an asset to Iberostar Ensenachos resort.

Paradisus Los Cayos: We had a wonderful time at Paradisus los cayos hotel for an all inclusive week from June 5 to 12.
The hotel is beautiful, new, modern, spacious and clean. All staff are very friendly and provide excellent service at the restaurant, bars, main lobby etc. The food was ok but a bit salty. We enjoyed the fresh fruits.
The beaches are very beautiful. The internet was accessible everywhere at the resort.
We were able to play tennis for 3 days with Alain, the tennis coach. He is very friendly and provided some techniques when playing. Very good coach!
We will come back again.

Vila Gale Cayo Santa Maria: For our trip to Cuba, Hotel Grand Sirenis Cayo Santa-MarÃa
For our trip to Cuba, Hotel Grand Sirenis Cayo Santa-MarÃa
Good memories with our kids. Excellent service from your travel agent.
In Cuba, from airport to the hotel, long way, almost 2h, but amazing trip with a bus with air conditioned. Good occasion seeing real Cuban villagers and amazing road between Cuba island and Cayó Santa-MarÃa island.
Grand Sirenis Cayo Santa MarÃa it’s a modern hotel, built in 2019, with the huge rooms. We had a king bed and 2 small beds for our childrens ( [... read more]one broken). Big bathroom, nice balcony and all the rooms in the main building are first floor to 3 floor, with an elevator who’s working well each day.
Problems in the hotel:
- the climatisation in our room was not working on our arrival in the room, we’re announced and they repaired the same day.
- drain in the shower blocked and the water was everywhere, but they sent the plumber and he fixed, the second day.
- Sunwing representative on the spot, between 14h30-17h
- The roads from the hotel to the beach made by concrete pieces with a space between them and my Weelchair stays blocked between this empty spaces. Impossible to go to the beach by myself or with the kids. !!!If this will be repaired, like a smooth way to the beach, I will return in this hotel.
- the pools were green because they didn’t put enough chlorine, but at the end of our vacation of 1 week, the biggest pool was blue and ok, the kids loved.
- not too much animation, only 2 tenors in the lobby, almost every evening, if some thematic animation was organized m, only 2-3 days from our 7 days stay, too late for families, at 9h30 pm
Good points:
-Excellent manager and client services, they helped us to have our problems solved
- amazing beaches and good juices on the beach.
- it’s like a peninsula, so no waves or jellyfish, water was amazing,
- enough close to the beach, a small coral relief with fishes, nice activity for our kids
- amazing short trip with a catamaran for 4 persons
Good price and amazing people!
I will recommend

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Was Shock!!!
The night we arrive we found out that the shower drainage is clog so we ask to change our room right away.
Cleaner took items in our new room, the reason was they thought it was a gift for them.
Room are very outdated. Pillow covers smells like body odour.
Condition yourself that you are there because of the beach not for food.
Make sure to bring spray for mosquitos.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Santa Maria: HONEST REVIEW
Room had blood and stains on furniture, everyone had food poisoning, slushies have mould in them, clothes and food stolen by maids, and I got a rusty fishing hook stuck in my foot from inside the pool
The complex is very large well maintained by happy helpful Cuban employees. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The food is the usual Cuban fare nothing to boast about. Cuba has to do better in this area.

Vila Gale Cayo Santa Maria: Disappointing Trip
We’ve been to Cuba over 15 times and so we know to have low expectations when it comes to food. However this hotel was a 2* for food as there was barely any offerings for guests. The worst part was that both of the 2 pools were not working that it was green from algae. On top of the bad weather and bad food, we also had no pool. We paid for a so called “5*†hotel that had no pool and we are not happy.

Melia Buenavista: The staff are the most friendly, warm and helpful that I have experienced!
We loved our room a great deal with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was so spacious and the bed was really comfortable. We were celebrating my milestone birthday and the hotel gave us an ocean view and did not charge extra for this. We really appreciated this.
The outdoor shower was a real treat. The maid kept our room very clean and the fridge was kept stocked with water and pop. It was so wonderful to have two butlers assigned to us while we vacationed at the resort and they took car[... read more]e of all of our needs. They booked our restaraunts for us each day at the hour that we requested and we never had to line up to book al la cartes. It we had questions or concerns, they were on top of it! Joan went above and beyond for us when it came to any or our requests and took really good care of us. He checked in on us frequently and made sure that our stay was enjoyable. Almando was very friendly and helpful as well.
The cappacinos were delicious and we enjoyed room service frequently. There is nothing lke sipping a monring cappacino on your balcony while looking at the ocean and hearing the bird songs of Cuba.
The resort is peaceful and quiet and my husband and I enjoyed our first adults only vacation.
Thank you to all of the staff for making our first stay in Cayo Santa Maria a very pleasant and enjoyable one!

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Disappointment.
This is not a 4-star resort.
The bathrooms in the lobby and by the Buffet do not look good. I recommend avoiding it.
The rooms are kept clean, we missed the coffee maker (which we got after the intervention of a Sunwing[... read more]s representative).
The choice of beverages is very limited to what Cubans can now offer. The food was also not the best, but we were not hungry. The snack bar was a "Joke"- terrible!
Jazz Bar was unavailable - the only public place with air condition.
Wifi is advertised everywhere, but is accessible only after 4 pm and not always working as it is supposed.
We didn't use the pool so can't judge.
The beach is a bit narrow and dirty (mainly, thanks to the people who use it), and be careful because there are a lot of broken shells and other crusty things that can hurt.
The seabed slightly away from the shore is soft and silty.
The service is amicable and nice(as always in Cuba). However, they don't speak much English or French.
My opinion is based on the family section of the resort, not the adult section. The adult section seemed to be more interesting.

Grand Aston Cayo Las Brujas: Horrible!
I travelled to Las Brujas from Montreal with Sunwing, on May 27th, 2022 for one (1) week with an 11 year old and two (2) other adults.
We purchased the Elite Plus option (extra $200) and in-flight meals. Unfortunately, there was no “Fresh and flaky croissantâ€, it was a cold, hard and squished sandwich, I did not eat it and on the return flight exchanged it for another option.
The 737 is advertised as having an in-flight entertainment, but it was not the case.
In the email communications[... read more] I received prior to my departure, I was informed that Pesos is the official currency in Cuba, however, no one wants Pesos and are requiring payment in US or CAD dollars. We are then stuck with the Pesos.
Another email informed me to meet with the Sunwing rep the day after the arrival at 10 am – that was incorrect as well.
Upon our arrival at the hotel, we received the room keys and towel vouchers. I asked for a map, but did not receive one. There were maps on the way to the beach but did not indicate our current location, so it was difficult to orient ourselves. The room key did not work the first three (3) times so I had to go back to the lobby to get this fixed. To get the towels, we needed to look for the person in charge to get them. To return the towels, it was the same situation and the person in the booth didn’t even have any vouchers to give us. It was just time wasteful and we had to go to the lobby to get this resolved to avoid the $25 US penalty per towel.
Very few people spoke any English – ordering drinks or food was a hit & miss – we would sometimes get what we wanted and sometimes they would not bring what we ordered as they didn’t understand us.
The resort was very, very dirty. The bathrooms were disgusting with dirty floors and toilets, some not flushing, some doors not closing, no light, smell of urine, etc. The lobby, the hallways, the pool area and the beach were also very disappointing. Plastic cups, cigarette butts, broken dishes, paper, spills, roaches/bugs etc. There was no AC in the lobby nor a closed off lounge to cool off although a Jazz Bar was advertised. There was an oversized chess game but with missing pieces to my son’s disappointment. The hotel advertises 24/7 WiFi but it’s not the case. It was available with a password, from 4 pm and only in the lobby if we were able to stay connected. With an 11 year old, on rainy days, and nothing else to do, internet was all we had – so that was falsely advertised as well. Even to do our check-in and check flight status, it was a challenge without the WiFi.
Some staff drank on the job. One was flat out drunk and we could not finalise our A la carte restaurant reservations. When ordering two (2) beers, one mentioned something to the effect of “let me get you 3†and drank one himself. Some were trying to sell us Pesos for a rate 4-5 times more advantageous than at the airport, as they just want dollars.
We took a taxi with to the neighbouring Ensenachos resort to compare (as we thought that this was representative of the situation in Cuba in general) - that resort was spotless, you could eat off the floor in the bathroom!
The rooms were clean but we had no coffee machine as advertised. The bed sheets were smelly, as if they were left wet in the laundry for a while. The shower had no doors so all the water would flood the bathroom. The mini-bar was half empty.
Although I knew the food reputation in Cuba, this was beyond belief! No peanut butter, no Nutella, no ketchup, no mayo, no salt, etc. The food was cold, tasteless and soggy (ex: eggs or vegetables). A la carte restaurants were good though so this saved us. Some drinks were not available: no orange or apple juice, no milk, no beer on the beach on some days, no tequila. The buffet was full of flies! They were on food, on the tables, everywhere!
There was a snack bar with no menu so it was hard to know what was available. We went once: ordered some burgers that came after 20 minutes of waiting and one reminder. Unsure if it was meat or not but besides that on a bun, there was nothing else and the 5-6 fries on the plate. It was uneatable and we left it on the table.
On the last day, I found pieces of stainless steel scrubber in my pasta. I showed it to the manager at the buffet. My mother had a piece of glass in her ice cream from possibly a chipped glass cup.
The beach was dirty with cigarette butts, broken shells (I’ve cut my feet twice), plastic cups in the sand and water. I was picking them up constantly. Since there is no bathroom at the beach bar, people go in the water or the near by bushes (including the staff). You can smell urine when walking by the bushes.
Music was very loud at both the beach and the pool area. I tested the decibels with my watch (it was around 90 which is way too high). Hard to have a conversation with that much noise or to even relax.
Beach showers to rinse off were not working either.
I initially wanted to leave early but since I did not want to pay extra, decided to wait it out. I spoke to the Sunwing rep, Delvis, about the situation and he was very helpful. He got the Manager involved, who was also very, very helpful. We did get extra à la carte reservations (except for Thursday) and we got the coffee machines. We declined the special dinner offered on Wednesday as the situation with the mosquitos was unbearable.
However, these changes did not help the fact that we were stressed and frustrated with the situation and not enjoying the vacation.
If this trip were $600, I would not say anything. But it was $1200 per person. The information on Sunwing website is incorrect and offers false advertising.
“Pristine shoreâ€, “white-sand shoresâ€, “bowlingâ€, “charming accommodationsâ€, “stocked mini-barâ€, “all drinksâ€, “10 restaurantsâ€, “7 barsâ€, “24/7 free WiFi throughout resortâ€, “electric coffee makerâ€, “Jazz Bar/Coffee Shopâ€,
As a traveller/tourist, I am unable to visit the resort before booking. I am counting on the website description to make my decision. Sunwing has the responsibility to provide accurate information to the clientele and not advertise/promise a pristine resort when they cannot deliver the goods. The whole week was a waste of money and time. We came back more tired than when we left.

Vila Gale Cayo Santa Maria: New Resort
Beautiful sandy beach with crystal clear water. New resort with clean room. Service is ok but if you want an excellent Service you need to tip. Sometimes even when you tip $5 or $10. They don't look after you. Food not good. Don't go to Cuba for food. Buffet had 1000 of flys landing on food and while your eating. Food selection was limited with restaurant serving Buffet food. Playa Luxury Cayo Las Brujas: Beautiful resort.
While this is an absolutely beautiful resort it is definately struggling to start up after Covid and lack of guests for 2 years.
The food is mediocre. Only two restaurants open, which is understandable seeing as maybe the resort was 1/4 full. No activities yet, but they made an attempt on our last day, so hopefully....
Wifi, forget about it. You are on and off like a yoyo and sad to say but by the third day we had this super long user ID and password memorized from logging on so much.
[... read more]Also the attitude of some of the staff was surprising considering they should be happy people are coming back. Others were awesome!!
Misquitoes and flys are abundant.
All that being said, given time to reboot I would still give it another try. It really is a beautiful resort. And would I recommend it....not yet, but later.

Vila Gale Cayo Santa Maria: Getting Started
This hotel opened 2 months ago after sitting 2 years from the completion of construction. Covid delayed the opening no doubt. The occupancy was somewhere around 25% even with Cubans in for the weekend. Being a new hotel they did a good job of getting us in and settled. The building was large and beautiful but due to occupancy was only running the main lobby , pool, one snack bar and beach facilities.
The entertainment was done in the lobby bar which was well received by the guests. This beach i[... read more]s well sheltered from the NE winds that blow from the Atlantic so we had calm water and good snorkeling from the beach all week. The beach equipment was new and readily available (Peter the sailor was great) also Ranaldo the beach waiter was tireless is running for our drinks.
The Covid protocols were masks for all the staff at all times , hand sanitizers everywhere and guests in the buffet were not admitted without a mask and reminded to wear them when moving about getting food.
