We really enjoyed our vacation and look forward to going there again. The grounds were beautiful, the staff was helpful and friendly, the rooms were well cared for and the food was good. We were amazed there were so many pools available that one area never seemed crowded. The beach was beautiful and we enjoyed the activities that were offered.

Riu Republica: Great stay
Pros- New, Clean, Modern, Friendly staff, Great Buffet. Good club. Lots to do. Wicked beach.
Cons- Day time entertainment is repetitive and can be too vulgar
-Night time entertainment is complete opposite, more suited for old timers.
-Overserving— people falling in pool area or having to be wheel chair escorted back to room
-Mid way through our trip resort expanded, restaurants closed instead of 7days wk
-Intermittant water issues
That being said overall great trip and would s[... read more]tay here again!

Bahia Principe Escape Aquamarine: Great Vacation
We were at the Ambar Green section for 2 weeks at the end of October. The weather was really hot so we spent most of our time relaxing around the adults only pool. The pool servers Gloria, Arisleidy, Rossy, Yissel and Nicaurys were excellent and always extremely friendly.
We spoke to our excellent butler Claudia, and she booked all our a la carte dinners for us. When we returned to our room later that day, all our reservation slips had been delivered to our room. It was really great not to have[... read more] to stand in line everyday to book dinner reservations. The variety and quality of the a la carte restaurants was excellent.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Good place for vacation
Overall, I liked vacation at Iberostar Costa Dorada.
To itemize:
- food is great, huge variety, in the buffet every evening there is something new, like sushi, Mexican food, etc.
- service is good, especially when you give tips; because of a lot of European vacationers who usually don't give tips, servers usually don't expect them; but if you give $1US or 50DOP the service becomes even better,
- room was clean; bedsheets were changed every day;
- entertainment was good, there were a lot o[... read more]f daily activities, including shooting and archery;
- swimming pool was good, I also liked the whirlpool which is in the middle of it between the columns;
- beach was decent; the only thing is it was cleaned of weeds every second day; therefore, some days it's not perfect; at the same time, sand was fine and allowed long walking;
- the ocean goes deep quickly and always wavy; it may not be suitable for small kids.
There is a golf course near of the hotel. It will cost around $110US to play 9 holes + $15 for taxi.
Although it's a Spanish country, almost everybody speaks English well; exception is the taxi drivers who usually don't speak English at all.
Overall, it's a good place for vacation.
The only bad experience I had this trip was not related to the hotel but to the Air Canada as number of their employees' failures were quite annoying.
We came to the airport close to 1hr deadline due to traffic delays on 401; we still could be in time on the flight, but Air Canada employee directed as to the wrong and very long line; then, when there was "Last call to Puerto Plata" we were moved to the separate line, but nobody served as for the next 25 minutes. Then, at check-in, obviously we were late for sending luggage, and the only options was given is whole family should fly without luggage. I wonder why they didn't provide the option that part of the family could still go to the plane without luggage, and part of family take care of suitcases? This would save us cost of 2 tickets (~$800) on the next day flight. I understand that this happened because we came close to deadline. However, I even though we would have come half of an hour earlier, we had directed to the same long line, stayed there for 30 minutes, moved to the separate line with no service, and the result would be the same. Perhaps, coming to the airport for Air Canada flight in 2 hours before the flight is not a recommendation, it's a "must". There is no such problem with other carriers; same check-in procedure next day with WestJet took only 10 minutes without any lines.
But it's not the end. On the way back from Puerto Plata it was a shower rain and two flights were expected from/to Toronto, namely Air Canada and Air Transat with less than an hour between them. The Air Canada plane "due to bad weather condition" went to other place and came back later causing 2 hours delay; however, few minutes after the delay announcement the Air Transat plane successfully landed to Puerto Plata and went back to Toronto in time. And that was sort of a last drop for me. It's been my 10th vacation in Caribbean for the last 9 years and the first with Air Canada; perhaps, and it's the last one with Air Canada as well.
Anyways, other than that, vacation went well, a lot of food, swimming, great photos and fun. I will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends. :)

Grand Bavaro Princess: Bavaro Princess was just ok.....
My wife and I just recently returned from Bavaro Princess (11-12 until 11-19) and we were underwhelmed with the trip.
We were Platinum guests in room 743. The room was no different than the others except for the fact that we got our rum and vodka replaced and wasn't even replaced after the first night. The bed was very uncomfortable, we were out of hot water (the whole resort) for 1 night, friends that we made through the week had the exact same room, when we checked in there was no welco[... read more]me drink or cool towel as advertised.
The room location was perfect and I recommend being down by the pool area as most of the day you are down there anyway. The downfall there is that the trolley's stop running at midnight so when we went to the lobby bar our time was limited as there was still flooding in the pathways back to the rooms causing us to have to take the transportation.
The beach was the best part of this resort, soft sand, no seaweed and very clean. The only downfall are the locals trying to sell you their goods, to get a pic taken with a monkey or iguana or to get cheaper excursions.
The excursions themselves are hit and miss as always it depends on the group of people and your host. We opted for the Saona Island tour which where we were guaranteed to see a star fish and we didn't see one. The start fish encounter was one of the reasons we did this particular one so I feel as if we were oversold and the promise was not kept up. The food on the excursion was terrible and we were rushed at certain aspects of it such as snorkling. We were told to don't be too long as it's not fair to those on the boat that are opting our of snortkling. This didn't make sense to me.
The food at the resort was not that great. The fries were always cold, the meat was very fatty and therefore I spent more time cutting than eating. The Oriental restaurant was less than appetizing and I ended up just going to McPrincess afterwards. We ordered room service one morning and we were told that it was only a continental breakfast and when it arrived it was just two fruit plates with juice. Later that week we were informed that we had a choice of a complete breakfast meal and when we retried it it still ended up being disappointing as it was 30 minutes late.
The people that we met from around the world were great, the resort itself has potential but is just too large for me. There were about 4 staff members that I plan on sending emails to the resort about as they were amazing.
The last thing is the time share people. This resort needs to part ways with them as they are WAY too aggressive. I ended up getting very rude with them as the week went on. They try to get you with a special gift from the bottom of their heart but then want you to spend an hour listening to a pitch and they don't care if you buy or not as they get $40 US for each person that attends and you are helping their family out. In the end it's my vacation and if I want to attend a meeting I would sign up, other than that leave me alone.
I wouldn't go back to this resort and would try going to Dreams near La Romania if I decided to ever go back to Dominican.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace: beautiful but too big
The location was great-close to the airport. Beach was the best part. Just too big. too long of a walk just to get something to eat. Food was good. A la cartes were good-favourite was the steak house. Shopping too high end on property. Would prefer market style shopping. We had a better time in Cuba for half the price!

Majestic Elegance Punta Cana: Fall Getaway
We arrived late at night to Happy Anniversary Sign on our door great start , we quickly put a few items away and set out looking for food. Most places were closed but we went to the buffet which opened in 20 minutes but were brought out hot fresh chicken and fries . In the morning after a late breakfast we set out looking for a a beach lounge to our shock we found one . With this we knew we had right location the water was amazing some waves n seaweed but not enough to keep us out. There was mi[... read more]nor roof damage from hurricane which was repaired by our second day.
Bar staff (Jesuito and Miguel Angel) were great and had your drink waiting for you, Animation team (Snoopy and Fifi and Disiel ) are amazing kept u busy and active,pool was great with a long great foam party. The pool could use some repairs ,tiles falling off.
The food was very good with a la carte unlimited was good . The Japanese place was worth going to as was the steak house , the Italian was not what i expected but my dinner was exchanged fast.
The beach is so nice as we walked it daily some vendors but politely say no and tip your servers as they do remember your drinks and service is good. I had room service one night and the food came before promised time.
Would we come back Yes recommend yes , but if doing club book it with agent not at hotel, swim up to me not worth it after going to the Mirage

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Excellent Visit
Four of us visited the week of Nov. 12th to the 19th. Airport and resort check in went very smoothly as did the welcome cocktail. We arrived at the perfect time around 3pm and headed right to our rooms. Concierge led the way and explained some details about the resort and our room while our luggage was delivered. First impressions of the layout and grounds were wow, very nice, mountain in the back and ocean in the front. We requested two weeks prior for building #1 top floor with king beds in b[... read more]oth rooms, close together and received exactly that. Rooms 1214 and 1215 were well located with decent ocean views. The room was great. Everything worked well and super comfortable pillow top beds. The resort is very well laid out with only a two-three minute walk through lovely grounds to everything. The beach right in front of our building was perfect, always loungers available and a really nice entry into the sandy bottom ocean. To the right there was some rock but nice entries could easily be found. The guys on the beach trying to take you the market were annoying at first but a no thanks and they left us alone. The water was nice and warm and a little wavy, perfect for cooling off. The pool was also refreshing and clean. They repaired a part of the pool while we were there, took three days to complete. No problem because the other two sections remained opened. Always felt not crowed and again plenty of loungers. The food and drinks were of good quality and very good. Our new favorite was Bombay Gin/sprite and lime, also very refreshing. The buffet was great with a nice variety. Breakfast was amazing every morning with anything you could think of. Themed nights mixed things up nicely like Asian night and Dominican night featuring shrimp and lobster. We tried all three restaurants and enjoyed them all. The Japanese was our least favorite. The main stir fry was good, appetizers and the overall loud show not so good. Service was good everywhere. The shows were okay, but way too loud. The Circle of Life (The Lion King) was very good as well as the show where couples competed in these hilarious various games. The entertainment staff go over and above all day long to entertain the guest especially Justin Beiber who went out of his way to get to know and make us laugh. If you visit you’ll be sure to hear/see him.
All in all it was a great week and a very nice/classy resort. The weather was a nice mix of sun/clouds/heat and a tropical storm that went on for hours one evening. Would highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed.

Excellence El Carmen: Very nice resort, but issues
This resort is beautiful, its located on the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Although it's very clean, the grounds are well kept, I found it odd that a resort barely a year old had to have panels replaced in the walk ways but they did it pretty quickly. The staff is friendly and pretty eager to please you. The variety of food (restaurant ala cartes very good) is very good but at that I must leave a warning to all...
During a lunch buffet we noticed that the kitchen supervisor/manage[... read more]r came out and was making sure the food was hot. They didn't take temperature but we watched and everything he looked at had steam coming off it. Because of our time difference we usually didn't eat until lunch time but the one day we actually got up early enough to try the buffet breakfast. EVERYTHING that we tried was barley warm (we were there at 9 a.m.). I enjoy eggs Benedict and saw two on the buffet and proceeded to take them back to my table. I took a bit out of the first one and the English muffin was soggy and the egg was cold, I almost spit i on my plate but refrained and swallowed it. I tried the second one, it was not soggy but it was just as cold and nasty as the first. Needless to say I didn't finish those eggs, in fact that ruined my appetite so bad I didn't eat anything else on my plate. A while later I started not feeling very well and later that day the bathroom and I became very close. We are home now and one week after that day I am still sick and have a bacterial infection. My doctor told me that it could have been the eggs but it also could have been from some meat I ate. My warning is this, PLEASE make sure your meat is thoroughly cooked. I think it was the eggs that got me because of the timeline as to when I started feeling ill.
Trust me, NOBODY wants to feel how I feel right now. A beautiful vacation shot to hell because of this. All that money we spent and got to enjoy half of it. I feel completely ripped off. I know it wasn't intentional but when you see people working in the buffet area and they are touching their faces (with no gloves) and then touching the food. Someone is going to get sick.
On the very last day we were there, I was so sick that I was freezing with the sweats and I was shaking. It felt like an internal earthquake. My wife phoned down to the front desk and asked to speak to a manager. We still don't know who she talked to but she asked if there was any Gatorade in the resort because I was so dehydrated. She was told... " I have to get special permission to provide that" and after an hour we got no call back so my wife when down to the gift store and bought it herself. It's a good thing she found it because if she hadn't there is a good possibility that we weren't going home that day. My wife called down again to complain about no call back. It was as if they didn't care. I guess they would have cared if I got worse. I didn't think I was that sick until that very day, that's why we never sot medical help. We had brought immodium and other things just in case, not that it helped much except for the bloating and gas.
We are trying to find out a way to contact their head office so that they can work on fixing this type of thing but there seems to be no direct contact information only resort information. Since the resort didn't care at the time there is no point in contacting them.
Perhaps someone reading this can forward this to them. I just don't want anyone else to suffer like I am right now.
