Roc Arenas Doradas: Terrible food
Run down resort, missing stairs in pool ladder. Broken railings to go up stairs to the restaurant. No food as the place is over run with Cubans and Russians grabbing food from the buffet and dumping it in their bags. Resort EVEN RAN OUT OF SUGAR!! Bottom shelf liquor, you have to leave the buffet to get coffee as there is no coffee service.
The Cubans guests are so LOUD in the morning waking everyone up shouting and have no control over their kids. I encountered them begging/demanding things f[... read more]rom guests which was very annoying. I know things are rough for the Cuban people, but just think... if these Cuban hotel guests can afford a week at an all inclusive resort with all of their relatives in tow then they must not be very poor at all.
The resort is infested with roaches. Card key turned off numerous times and was blamed by the front desk that it was my fault! Found numerous guests at the front desk complaining that they too had their key card deactivated.
My advice spend the extra $100.00 and go to Mexico or Jamaica. At least you won't starve there

Melia Jardines del Rey: A Memorable Stay with Room to Improve
We recently returned from a stay at Meliá Jardines del Rey and overall, we had a really enjoyable vacation. There’s a lot to love about this resort, and while a few things could be improved, the positives far outweighed the negatives for us.
**Let’s start with the good stuff** — and there’s plenty! The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful, with well-maintained gardens and direct access to a stunning beach. The water is crystal clear, and the soft white sand made every beach walk feel like [... read more]paradise. One thing to note — the front left side of the beach is quite rocky, so we definitely recommend bringing water shoes if you plan to swim there. However, if you head further to the right side of the beach, the shoreline becomes much sandier, making it easier to walk into the water. Just keep in mind that there are sandbars in that area, so the water tends to stay shallow — usually only ankle to knee deep — for quite a stretch. You’ll need to walk out a bit farther to reach waist-deep or deeper water. Great timing for us to come because there were always palapas to pick and lounge chairs anytime of the day.
The pools are expansive and clean, offering both quieter spots and more lively areas depending on your mood.
The **entertainment team deserves a big shoutout**. They were friendly, energetic, and worked hard to keep guests engaged with activities throughout the day and into the evening. From beach games to live shows, we had a lot of fun — never a dull moment if you’re open to getting involved. Special mention goes to Ailyn and Adalberto who made one of the best night event possible and fun!
Would have loved to have dance night every night at the Mojito bar to keep the action going.
As for food — you **will not go hungry here**! Between the buffet, snack bar, and pizza bar, there's always something to eat. Excellent pizza! Buffet can be repetitive but try not to indulge in all the food in one day. Pace yourself out so try something new each day. We especially enjoyed the à la carte restaurants, it added a nice change of pace and felt more personalized. There's always a choice for everyone.
That said, there are a few areas for improvement. The room was very clean, but the bathroom could use some updates, better lighting, and a more efficient toilet. We had minor maintenance issues—mainly with the door lock, which didn’t always work properly. Though staff responded quickly, it still required a bit of a workaround. The balcony door lock also failed on our last day, but it wasn’t a major issue as we were checking out.
On the bright side, housekeeping was excellent. Special thanks to Leah and Leesandra for keeping the room spotless and the fridge well-stocked.
Despite these minor issues, we truly had a great time. The **staff were warm and welcoming**, and it’s clear they work hard to make sure guests enjoy their stay. If you come with the right expectations — a beautiful setting, variety of food, and lots of fun — you’ll have a wonderful time.
We would definitely return, especially knowing what to expect. With a few small tweaks, this resort could easily become exceptional.

Sol Rio de Luna y Mares: Great value resort
The resort was quiet as we were late in the season, but still provided a lovely, relaxing stay. The grounds were well kept, food areas were clean, beach and pool provided welcome respite from the 30 degree days. There were some shortages of food and drink, but not enough to take away from the hard work of the staff to make things as nice as possible.

Melia Cayo Coco: Another Great Stay
This time we stayed in one of the refurbished rooms and everything was just great. The grounds are kept in great shape also.
We were happy to see the staff again and they treated us like family.
One slight drawback from past visits was no coffee in the room due to supply problems, I would presume. They did have a kettle and tea bags so bring a jar of instant coffee if you wish a morning coffee before venturing out in the morning.
A new addition was the Italian restaurant where the disco[... read more] used to be above the lobby. A great addition. We managed to get in once and the food was super. Great job Adonys!
We hope to get back begore Christmas.

Food was very good service was excellent and the people made you feel welcome to be there . We enjoyed the vibe of the smaller Adult side Coral and the swim out we had. Roc Arenas Doradas: We had a good time !
This resort was pretty good. The food was tasty, but very repetitive and they would run out of certain food pretty quickly. The beach is absolutely beautiful- the star of the show!!!! I found the pool a little dirty, but nothing that I wouldn’t swim in. Just not a clean as I am used too. The entertainment was different than I am used to, but all the entertainers were very talented. Our room was clean and our maid was sooo sweet! She always took good care of our space. Most staff were very friend[... read more]ly. We even made a few friends. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and we enjoyed visiting Cuba a lot! We definitely will be back, but will probably visit another resort/hotel or Airbnb.

Paradisus Los Cayos: Beautiful Resort But,
Upon arrival, the resort attempted to extort $250 from us for a swim-up room. However, we discovered that the swim-up pool is accessible to guests from the second and third floors.
Throughout our stay, we were plagued by cockroaches, resulting in poor sleep and discomfort. Despite booking a room on the reserve side, we were denied access to a balcony bed, as advertised on the website. The bed sheets were never replaced, and the resort reused the same sheets.
Furthermore, our daughter exper[... read more]ienced coughing fits due to the presence of mold in her room. The resort’s cleaning practices were inadequate, as they dumped dirty cleaning water into the swim-up pool.
The resort lacks any entertainment options. We were forcibly removed from the disco after our daughter joined us, despite the fact that she was merely having fun dancing. After the shows, the resort appears to abandon its operations.
I urge you to address these issues promptly to improve the quality of your services.

Iberostar Origin Tainos: Amazing Beaches.
Arrived at the hotel, friendly greetings from everyone, and was happy with the Lobby Renovations that were ongoing. Headed to the beach and was amazed at the beaches. Fast forward had a great stay, great day trip to Havana. Food was ok but we were there for a relaxing time. Evening singers were great and the shows were decent.
My/our biggest complaint involves a staff member that i am assuming is from Head Oofice for Iberostar. His name was Daniel and he was in charge of the Wine Tasting On Tu[... read more]esday May 13th. We were sitting near the back and when it all started we along with a few other tables never received any wine. We mentioned it to him and some of the missing tables got it but not ours. Fast forward to the evening event which was a tasting event for Mojhitos. He was there and we approached him and told him we were not very impressed with Wine tasting in the morning and the way it was run, and his response was oh what a shame with sarcastic tone and then I witnessed him talking to a friend I assume and rolled his eyes and pointed at us and they both laughed. Anyways that was the worst part of the trip and we both just found him very arrogant and it was all about him.
So it won't spoil things for us but found him a little much.

Just returned from Melia, level up family. Week was perfect. Weather was 34^ It was great!
Food was good. Al la carts were delicious. Beach was incredible. Rooms are very nice. My only concern was my phone didn't work so we couldn't take advantage of the room service or contact concierge. We feel we didn't get the full advantage of the level up service.

Royalton Hicacos Resort and Spa: Amazing Beach!
Beach was great. Staff was very helpful. Somewhat of a maze of buildings but eventually figured out how to get around. Food was as good or better than other 4- and 5-star resorts in Mexico or the Dominican, etc. Caribe and the Pearl where the best food of all. I was able to get in to them without being a Diamond Club member. Had to wait 1/2 hour or 45 minutes but went early enough to get my reservation in and then go for some drinks. I would definitely return

Playa Pesquero: Amazing hotel!
In April we came to this hotel for the 5th time. We like everything there: wonderful staff, beautiful ocean, clean beach. This year there were a lot of fruits and vegetables, but most of all we liked the artists in the lobby: saxophonist, pianist, singers. We thank everyone who made our holiday unforgettable. In this hotel it is impossible to single out someone personally, because everyone works perfectly.

Iberostar Selection Ensenachos: We had an amazing time ☀️
We stayed at the is resort at the beginning of May 2025, the resort is beautiful but a little dated. Everything is clean and well maintained. All the employees work very try hard. Cuba as a country is in crisis and everyone is doing their best with what they have.
When you arrive you will likely experience culture shock to some extent.
Beach, ocean:
The beach is beautiful, stunning, breathtaking. The white sand is soft, water sparkles in different shades of blue. Lots of fish and ocean[... read more] life accessible right from the beach, various sizes of alive conch. There is a shipwreck you can walk to. Lots of fish and coral by the rocks at Ensenachos beach.
Take the catamaran from the small resort marina out into the reef for an hour of snorkeling, lots of live coral, starfish, sea urchins, colourful fish, turtles. The marina staff is super nice as well.
Rooms, facilities:
Everything is clean but dated, ac is in each room but might not be strong enough depending on individual preferences. Linen and towels were clean. Bathroom has a tub and shower. Expect some critters in your room (we had a gecko). Each room has a balcony.
Daily cleaning service is very very good.
Our bungalow was in the perfect location with a short walk to the beach, pool and kids water park, snack bar and swim up bar.
Some shuttle service is available between the lobby, marina and big restaurant but we mostly walked.
The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. The pool is clean. The kids water park is small and not all features are working but my kids had a great time.
The kids club has limited hours and offers some activities and programs (I.e. mini chefs, yoga on the beach). There is a playground as well.
There is lots of wildlife to see around the resort. Lizards, geckos, birds, crabs, hermit crabs, cats and kittens.
Food:
There is plenty of food available but most of the food is Cuban. We were very cautious with what we ate (hot food (rice, beans, some meats, some veggies), food fresh off the grill (omelette, chicken, fish, Cuban style pizza), freshly cut fruit (the mangoes are delicious) and pastries (muffins, cookies, small croissants)). Salt is available but you may want to bring ketchup and jam etc.
We had some minor stomach troubles and most of the other travellers we spoke to had some sort of stomach troubles during their stay. Definitely bring gravol and pack lots of snacks if you are travelling with kids. You are not going to Cuba for the food.
There is a 24 hr snack bar that also serves breakfast and lunch buffet style and is used as one of the restaurants for dinner. Lunch is served at the beach bar and was always fresh and hot.
The large restaurant offers buffet for breakfast (lots of options), lunch and dinner.
We did not eat at any of the restaurants, only buffet.
There are flies at the buffet / restaurant. Also sometimes there are small biting insects in the evenings (bring big spray and afterbite).
Drinks / water:
You get 2 purified water bottles to your room each day (reusable glass bottles). This water felt safe to drink. Cold and hot drinks are available throughout the day, we were a little cautious of ice cubes. My kids loved the frozen lemonade. Welcome drinks are available at the evening buffet. Try to stay hydrated as much as you can.
Cuban and British alcohol is available, I do not drink so don’t know the quality of the alcoholic drinks.
Entertainment:
The Michael Jackson show is a highlight, don't miss it. Theresa white party by the pool was the next most popular.
Each night has an interactive kids show, the performers do their best to include everyone. Shows in the theatre feature different themes daily and performers are excellent and work very hard.
Various entertainment throughout the day at the beach, the pool and the lobby.
Things to keep in mind:
Cubans are struggling, they have very little and live in conditions we cannot imagine. Anything you can bring for them (clothing, medical supplies etc.) is much appreciated.
Tip if you can (USD or Canadian bills are preferred). Cubans make a basic salary, the tips really help them. Cubans work 6 out of 7 days and we saw many employees start work at 10am and work past midnight. Many depend on public transit and it takes them between 1 and 1.5 hours each way to get to and from work.
Almost everyone speaks some English but it is nice to know some basics in Spanish. You can also download an offline translation app.
We really enjoyed our stay ?☀️

Grand Memories Varadero: Beautiful pool & beach, run-down quarters
I stayed seven days in May of 2025 and I had a great time. The best parts of the resort are 1) the beach and ocean and 2) pools. The ocean water was clean and warm. There is a bar on the beach as well. Fantastic. There are two large pools. They're called the noisy and quiet pools. They're both fantastic. We found ourselves most days at the quiet pool which we had almost entirely to ourselves. :)
The negative points about Grand Memories Varadero are the accommodations. The rooms are [... read more]clean, beds are comfortable, and the air conditioning works great. However, the doors are rundown and falling apart. My wife could not open the patio door as it required so much effort that I had to do it. The food at the resort left something to be desired. Some days there was no bread, for example.

Sanctuary White Sands: Great Resort
Everything is easy to access, lots of food, beach is nice. Staff are very friendly. Big pool. I would return again. We were there for 2 weeks, nothing bad to say! We did not go to a la carte restaurant, the buffet had everything we needed.
